Someone called my on my pokegear and told me something useful.

Jack - "Did you know if you use Defense Curl, Rollout's power goes way up?"

Wow! Someone called me and told me something useful that I actually didn't know!

xJordan360 April 22nd, 2010 11:54 PM

Wait, what? Holy omfgahhh.

dantastikk April 22nd, 2010 11:56 PM

I never thought I'd see the day!

morrison April 23rd, 2010 12:22 AM

Actually I also got told something useful once: If you walk through the grass slowly you get less pokémon then when you run though it,.

Elite Four Lucian April 23rd, 2010 12:24 AM

Wow.. Really, That's odd, Defense Curl Raises Defense not Attack.. hmmm, guess you learn somthing new Everyday.

Mayfan24 April 23rd, 2010 12:26 AM

i got the same call, but I already knew about the defense curl/rollout combo

I looked it up on bulbapedia. Rollout's starting base power is 30, but apparently its 60 if you use Defense Curl.

So there are actually some helpful trainers out there after all. I thought that all trainers just call you to bug the hell outta you. I wonder if there are any other combos like this...

ggctuk April 23rd, 2010 1:51 AM

Think of it this way: Rollout requires your Pokemon to curl up. Defense Curl does that for you. I think that's what the programmers were thinking. In any case, I didn't know this, if I did I would've kept Graveler.

That's actually not a bad idea as to the origin of that combo

There's a few, but they are more commonly known. Sunny Day+Solar Beam and Rain Dance+Thunder for example.

Impo April 23rd, 2010 2:57 AM

yeah, i was told twister will still hit a flying pokemon, :O
is that true?

Clefairies April 23rd, 2010 3:02 AM

Oh wow, I never actually new about that defence curl/rollout combo.
Good to know! also very good to know that you may get some usual facts from the phone!!!!!!!

Okami Chi April 23rd, 2010 3:44 AM

I was told once that "Ian" KO'ed a Magikarp...and it was a hard fight. Even though the guy has a freaking electric type. Now I know that if I rematch him he should be easy xp. Guess that's useful.

Porygon-Z April 23rd, 2010 3:59 AM

Yes, in fact if it hits the pokemon when they are up in the air the power is doubled!
That's one of the useful calls in the game, unlike Lyra the Liar who tells you her marril has evolved when it hasn't.

SoulNuva April 23rd, 2010 4:21 AM

Joey says that his rattata is the best of all. I guess that's useful too, since it warns us about having a total killer!

LOL.
I just got a phone call (forgot who from one of the sailors or fishers I believe) that he KO'd a Magikarp, I mean surely this is impossible?

Impo April 23rd, 2010 4:35 AM

he KO'd a magikarp?!
how am i gonna top that :(

myrrh25 April 23rd, 2010 4:37 AM

I find it funny that the first thing that came to your mind when you got this phonecall was:
"HOLY CRAP! I must tell the PokeCommunity!!"

but, yeah I got that phonecall, and fair enough at the time I didnt know either O.o

Impo April 23rd, 2010 4:48 AM

there are actually some pretty cool combos out there, including:

Swagger/Flatter + Psyche Up
Swagger + Screech
Mimic + Imprison
Safeguard + Thrash/Outrage/Petal Dance

those can be really helpful :)

EJ April 23rd, 2010 6:56 AM

If someone is using Fly they can get pegged with Sky Uppercut, Gust, Twister, and possibly thunder <----not sure about that one.

If someone uses Dig, they can get hit by an Earthquake whose base power is now 200.

As for the defense curl + rollout thing, I already knew about it from bulbapedia. I had that combo on my Donphan in Diamond.

MickX April 23rd, 2010 7:03 AM

Jack can also inform you of Stomp doing double damage on a Pokémon who uses Minimize. It's just a few of the move oddities that exist in these games.

Impo, Safeguard + Thrash/Outrage/Petal Dance doesn't seem to work in HG/SS as much as it did in the past games. Lance's Dragonite got confused while Safeguard was under effect on my first E4 playthrough. I thought it was weird, but yeah...

BleuVII April 23rd, 2010 7:35 AM

I didn't know about Rain Dance/Thunder, but I was also surprised when I got that call.

I really wish I could call everyone back and say, "I just became the League Champion. I am not impressed by your (failed) attempts to catch low-level unevolved pokemon. Please stop calling me."

GlitchCity April 24th, 2010 12:30 PM

Hmm thats pretty interesting. Maybe I shouldve kept defense curl for my Azumarill.

EmeraldSerenade April 24th, 2010 2:48 PM

Swagger+Own Tempo Then copy with Psych Up. Quite useful.

I thought everyone knew that ):

The only thing I didn't know was that when you walk, Pokemon come out less often. I kinda suspected it, though.
