Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^
Dots's Sprite Showcase Hiya there everyone! I've been inspired by what I've saw throughout this forum of fakemon sprites, so I decided to create my own, currently unnamed region, and I wanted to post my progress and the sprites I've been making here for criticizing. So all tips, comments, suggestions, etc . . . are appreciated! Just keep in mind guys that it'd really be helpful for me if you'd say why you like or why you hate something, since I've just recently took up spriting and would like to get better as soon as possible! xD Also, just to make sure, I'll be saying this for any further inquires: Anything posted here is not for public use unless otherwise stated to be so, for now, all of those sprites are exclusive to my upcoming game's region, so please respect my wishes. Since I'm now officially finished with the introduction and warning, which you hopefully read, time to show you what I've got (until now). ;D Pokédex #001 - Cleri Grass http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/CleriPattern.png Clover Pokémon ~ Cleri (female) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorincess ~ ~ Cleri (male) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorince ~ ~ Very cheerful and upbeat, a frown on this POKÉMON's face is a rare case as it can see the bright side of anything, and is usually a great source of motivation for it's trainer. *** #002 - Cloble Grass http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ClobleEdit-2.png Courteous Pokémon ~ Cleri (female) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorincess ~ ~ Cleri (male) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorince ~ ~ Respected for their dainty, polite nature, smaller POKÉMON often regard it as a guardian because of its thoughtful personality and sensitive spirit. Really good! Only problem for me is that they all are pretty much baby pokemon, and that Scrabbit is smaller than Smeargle, which doesn't really happen in evolution. See attachment for comparison cause I'm too lazy to upload it to photobucket :/. Keep spriting, they are definetly better than mine! Oh, and how about naming the Grass starter Clovera?
|
Good stuff here. You have good form. I especially like Scrabbit. I could see that actually existing in a game.
|

Thanks for the suggestion! I like the name Clovera, but it just strikes me as a tad too obvious. If no other name is cuter, this is probably the one I'll be choosing. Quote:
*** Anyways, any feedback anyone's got is really appreciated. I'd like to see what others think of my work. |

Anyways, like I've mentioned before, new material is more likely coming up during the weekend. Until then, I'd really really really appreciate any comments you've got, since I want to improve. ^^ *** On further note, I'm trying to think up of unique concepts and evolution methods, so expect anything by the next update. ;) |
Can't Wait for the new sprites!

Update: Three new entries were added to the Pokédex. #??? - Taupille Bug http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Taupille.png Worm Pokémon - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon - ~ TAUPILLE have a huge appetite that they quench by feeding on plants nearest to them. Incredibly, they never get bloated and are usually a hassle for most beginning trainers. *** #??? - Chrysil Bug http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Chrysil.png Cocoon Pokémon - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon - ~ After evolution, those POKÉMON lose the ability to move quickly and barely eat aything. Only a most devoted trainer could bring out the best of them, and the hard work pays off nicely at the end. *** #??? - Pierrollon Bug/Dark http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Pierrollon.png Rhythmic Pokémon - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon - ~ Unmatched by anyone, PIERROLLON dance gracefully to tunes provided by others. Despite their weak flying capabilities and size, they can deceive their foes with illusions that ensure their victory in a battle. *** Finally finished with them! *wipes brow* Those guys were a pain to sprite, although the final result is most satisfactory (I'm not that fond with the second one, but it's okay for now). By the way, those guys are based off the Red Pierrot butterfly, which in my eyes, is the prettiest one I've ever seen. Guys, I'd love it if you'd leave comments and feedback on them, so the harshest criticism you've got is most welcome right now! Also, the other fakemon are still waiting for names, so I'm still open to suggestions. |
I like how your sprites are pretty clean and smooth, especially you line work.
A couple of things stand out to me though. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/GrassStarter.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Pierrollon.png Aside from the wings on the second one these two are more or less facing forward and that's a no-no for emulating the official style. Plus I think it makes them less interesting to look at. I also think you could do more with the arms and legs. In the case of the first one they could have more than a standing pose and in the second's case they could be more than noodles attached to the body. You know, variety in shape or thickness, possibly different colors. Now these: http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Taupille.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Chrysil.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Scrabbit.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Weebull.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Calfm.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Calff.png are great in terms of getting an interesting angle. I especially like the green-eyed bug. It's one of your simpler sprites, but I'd say it's one of, if not the best one you have. But maybe that's just me. Your style is also nice. It doesn't exactly scream "pokemon" with the way you do faces, but it's good. Now, this one: http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/BabyArtist.png I don't like it. It looks like your other one shrunk down. I think you're trying to make it too complicated within too limited a space. The feet especially seem too small to have the shading you gave it. It would probably be enough to give one foot shading and the other highlighting. Now that I look at it, you only use two colors to shade your sprites: a light and a dark. Official sprites generally use three: a base, a shade and a highlight. It's good for suggesting different shapes without having to add unnecessary detail. But again, it's your style. (Your Scrabbit, for instance, has a bit of a flat face.) I hope you feel more confident to try larger/more complex sprites soon. |
Dang dude, these are great! I especially like the Smeargle "sister-pokemon".
Keep up the good work! I must say you've got quite a good reputation for being helpful and talented with only 40 posts. |
Nice Sprties they are good Chrysil doesnt that much look like worm it needs some woerd parts to make it cacoon XD!
|
Quote:
Hm ... For the first two, I was trying hard to make them face the bottom left. I see what you're saying though, and I just find it weird that I've done that when I know it's a mistake but still overlooked the fact that they're facing the wrong way. I'll be working on fixing them, and I might even give them a revamp. On the other hand, while I get what you mean when you say "give their arms/legs more shape", I'm not sure of how to do that, since the working space is pretty limited. I'll try to figure out what to do about that though. Quote:
I find it weird that while you like second one the most, I find it too lacking. You just made me feel better about some of my work, so thanks for the compliment! ^^ When you mentioned that they don't really look like pokemon, you meant the calf ones, right? Because those were the ones that I found not-so-good looking after I finished working on them. Hm ... I'll probably be remaking those guys slowly after fixing the two you mentioned at the beginning. Right now I'm thinking of scrapping the calves. Quote:
About the shades, you're completely right, and it hurts a bit to know that I've missed the whole point of shape suggestion through shading. I should try to emulate the official style more, so adding a highlight to what I already have wouldn't hurt. Thanks a bunch Scarf, I really needed that feedback you gave me and I'd like to hear more from you. Hopefully I will become a better spriter through following your tips. ^^ *** Quote:

Chrysil isn't supposed to look like a worm, if that's what you meant. It is based on a pupa, or chrysalis, which is the 'morphing' stage between the state of worm and butterfly. *** So the next update is probably going to be a revamp/remake of a sprite I originally made, since I want to improve in terms of shading and spriting. That or a new name/evolution-method. Priority is still for the first choice though. ^^' |
A few updates guys. ^^
Starting off, I've re-sprited Taupille. The old sprite was bothering me a lot since it was larger than it's evolution, and in real life, it's supposed to be the opposite. The new sprite is now smaller and simpler (since I've removed the antenna-ish parts on its head), and in my opinion, it looks cuter. Also, the slightly edited pose makes it look less like it's going to topple over. I've also changed the species' name too, and Taupille are now to be classified as Larpau. So without delay, here they are: http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Taupille.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/LarpauTaupilleRevamp.png Larpau's (formerly Taupille) old and new sprites. Forwards onto Update No. 2 then. A new breeding technique has been discovered! Breeding a Smeargle or Scrabbit holding a Rainbow Incense will result in ??? (the baby pokemon that evolves into them, currently unnamed) hatching from the resulting egg. And here's the incense: Before any of you comment on this, I know that the rainbow incense is not rainbow-hued and contains three colors not in their usual pattern. The other four colors are on the other side, since fitting them all on one side is near impossible. *** I'd like to have some feedback guys, and remember that you still have the chance to pick a name for the unnamed pokemon on the first page. Also, some of the other pokemon are on their way for a revamp, and I'm still thinking whether to scrap or keep the Calf pokemon. |
What about... Trunny for the unnamed Pokemon? It's a combination of Trace and Bunny... it didn't come out quite right, but I think it's better than Tranny or Tracey (my other two ideas)
Also, for the Rainbow insence, I think you should show any of the following three color combinations on it: Blue, Red, and Yellow Blue, Red, and Green Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan |

Also guys, remember that I appreciate and love constructive criticism and I'd like to have feedback on the new Taupille Larpau! |
I vote the Blue-red-Green combo!
|
It's a nice sprite, but it's not much different from how it was originally. The head looks like it's facing forward a little more and it's probably about where it needs to be, but it's a little plain. Antennae would give it a little more pizazz though the ones you had before weren't doing much so I can see why you'd scrap them. It's also looking a bit flat at the bottom. Look at caterpie for comparison:
http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/8/89/Spr_3f_010.png It's got more of a rounded underside which helps give it that impression of a third dimension. In general, straight lines give a sprite a more 2D look which I think we'd all like to avoid. You're a bit inconsistent with how dark you made the outline. The end of the tail and the belly are dark, but there's a space between were it's lighter. That dark line at the bottom is also contributing to that less-than-3D look because it stands out so much. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/RainbowIncense.png I'd stick with this one. IMO the cool colors work better than red and yellow. |
Nice sprites ya got there.
I like Weebull xD |
Quote:
I'll see to that once I get some time. Thanks a lot for the criticism Scarf, I really appreciate it! ^^ As for the incense combo, I have to agree with you. I liked the original the most because of how the colors sort of blend into the brown and give an oriental-ish look. I'll leave it open though and wait to see what the community decides, but if little to no one votes, I'll be sticking with this one. Quote:

Following your advice from yesterday, I fixed the things you pointed out. There was a drastic change, and I think he looks a lot better right now. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/LarpauTaupilleRevamp.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Larpau.png (Old | New) As you can see, there's an improvement. It's not a Caterpie clone either. What I did was move the head back a pixel and resprite the front, in addition to simplifying the shading and fixing the outline. I chose not to add antennae either, since I like the sprite the way is now. ^^ Oh and thanks for giving the correct definition! ^^ |
They're really nice. My only real criticism would be that they're all small, but I can understand why. Some of the best that I've seen in a while.

*** Updates! My grass starter's concept has been finalized and I completely re-sprited it, making sure its orientation is correct. I also opened her eyes, so instead of a (^_^) face it now has a (._.) face, which I find way cuter and less confusing. xD Onwards with the sprite ... ! http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/GrassStarter.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Cleri.png (Old | New) While it's true that it's a bit simple, it's evolutions offer a lot of detail, and are, until now, my favorite concepts. ^^ Also, since no one suggested any good names for this little guy, I racked my brain hard and came up with names for the whole evolution line. This fellow is Cleri, which evolves into Cloble and depending on it's gender, evolves into either Clorince (Male) or Clorincess (Female). Name origins: * Cleri - Play on the word 'Clover'. * Cloble - Clover + Noble * Clorince / Clorincess - Clover + Prince / Princess. And that's it for them. *** I've decided to scrap the idea of a Tauros / Miltank baby since I've decided that those two aren't included in my region. The entry is going to be removed from the main post, but I'm reposting it here for the archive. *** # - REMOVED FROM POKÉDEX Normal http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Calfm.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Calff.png (Male | Female) Calf Pokémon - ??? (Male) ---> Tauros - - ??? (Female) ---> Miltank - ~ Cloaked in soft thick fur for warmth, ??? stick to their parents as long as they can until they mature. They are very innocent and believe whatever they are told, whether by their parents or humans. *** Also, since no one seems to be voting (I've only got two votes up to now), I've decided to choose between them. From the suggested three, only the second one looks fine (Red - Blue - Green) since the yellow and cyan stick out too much. The original one (Purple - Green - Blue) also made it to the semi finals. Now I've done my research on pokemon items and noticed that one thing ties them: All of the items are vibrantly colored and seem to be a direct representation of what they're supposed to be. Color plays an important role here, and I've decided to go with the one that portrays the idea better. The chosen incense is ... http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/RainbowIncenseEdit-2.png (Blue - Red - Green) Even though I liked the original one more, this one seems to fit in more with the common style, and represents a rainbow better than the original version. *** And that's it for this update guys! I'd love to know what you think of the revamped grass starter, so don't hesitate of expressing your opinion! Go ahead with all criticism and feedback you've got. xD |
The new Cleri is awesome, really good, but I liked the old one's clover pattern on it's face... just my opinion though!

The new Cleri looks like it belongs on the overworld of your generic RPG Maker XP, just the angle it's on. It's still great, though.

hm... I like names... o.o For the Scmeargle/Scrabbit prevo what about something like... Your spriting is quite good. The only criticism I have is to up the size of your sprites. For the next sprite maybe have a guide official sprite next to the one your creating. This may help to get proportions right =)

*** Anyways, I've got an update. ^^ http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/BabyArtist.pnghttp://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Scrabbit.png (??? and Scrabbit) You guys remember this those guys? Well they were both tweaked to fit in with my newer sprites, but in the case of Scrabbit, the concept's been completely resprited. ^^ Here are the newer ones (=D) : http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/BabyArtist.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/BabySmSc.png (Old | New) This guy was reshaded, since I liked his pose and didn't want to change it. I like it more now since it fits better with official sprites and the lines (especially at the joints connecting the legs to the body) look cleaner/smoother. Since that wasn't much, we'll be moving on to Scrabbit. ^^ http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Scrabbit.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ScrabbitRevamp.png (Old | New) I feel like this has been a drastic improvement, and I'm really happy with how this turned out. The pose has been changed to reflect the sweet personality of this pokemon and to deviate from it's pre-evolution's pose. I've also done the shading in a simpler way. I'd really appreciate criticism/feedback on how to improve on this. ^^ So guys, that's the end of the update. I'd really really really like to hear what you guys think about this, so please try to include constructive criticism in your posts. xD |
Wow, the new Scrabbit is good. My only problem is the drop, Scrabbit's pose makes it look like it's leaping forward or balance leaning forward, so the paint dot should be (IMO) tilted a little more backwards.
|
Quote:
It's not leaping forward or leaning forward; the pose was supposed to look similar to a twirl. Also, would you please clarify what you mean by 'tilt the drop a little more backwards'? |
Leaning forward, okie dokie.
Well, just make the dot look like it's coming from an angle, anyway you want. Right now it just looks like it's falling straight down, which doesn't work with the pose IMO. |
The new pose is quite nice. I like how it's holding its hands in. That gives it a little more personality. That foot seems to have lost all shading though. It's normal for the main part of a foot not to have shading if it's meant to look like it's further back, but even still I don't think it looks good with a completely black outline.
By the way, you've chosen some pleasing palettes for your sprites. |
Quote:
Quote:
For the foot, you're right, it does stick out. I'll be editing the sprite and reposting it then. ^^ I'm glad you like the palettes too, although not all of them are made by me. A few minutes later ... Edited! I've fixed the drop and added details to the foot. Is it better now, Scarf and Gol? http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ScrabbitEdit.png |
Yeah, It looks great now!

*** So let me check what I still have on my checklist. ~ The Polka-Dot Checklist (xD) ~ 1 - Re-Sprite Grass Starter (now named Cleri) Done! 2 - Revise ???'s Sprite Done! 3 - Re-Sprite Scrabbit Done! 4 - Re-Sprite Larpau (formerly Taupille) Done! 5 - Revise Chrysil's Sprite Done! 6 - Re-Sprite Pierollon Done! 7 - Revise Weebull's Sprite Done! (As of ~Monday, May 24 2010~, everything mentioned in the checklist had been finished) And apparently, I've still got three more things to do before moving on to spriting the new concepts I've got in mind (namely Cloble, Clorince, Clorincess, Dandecub, Dandeleo, and Kissedy). Onto work. I think there's going to be some time for an edit. ^^ [EDIT] I managed to find some time to take a look at Chrysil and resprite Pierrollon. I've revised Chrysil's sprite, but it's not that big of an update, since the only changes where in simplifying the shading and fixing a few outline errors. It's a sprite that, as Scarf noted before, was one of the best I've made, even though it's a really simple concept. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Chrysil.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ChrysilEdit.png (Old | New) Barely noticeable change, huh? xD As for Pierrollon, I'm going to need some sort of push to how I should start. The current problem is that I really like how the pose turned out in the beginning, but I have to change it to make it more left-oriented. I still want to keep the folding of the legs though, so I'd appreciate it if someone would point out how I could rotate the body slightly while keeping the same pose for the legs, in order to keep the look of grace and flexibility. I've tried it do many times already, but I only end up with bulky, non proportionate, non slender legs. Here's the current, in-need-of-editing sprite. I hope I didn't sound so confusing earlier as I'd really like some suggestions. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Pierrollon.png (Pierrollon, the Rhythmic Pokémon) Help is appreciated! Also, checklist above was updated. =D |
Larpau is adorable, it's exactly the type I'd want to catch! <3
Great work with the rest, too! |

Thank you so much for the tip! ^^ |
Update! ^^
I've re-sprited Pierrollon, and as noted before, fixed his orientation and size. I like the new version a lot because I've fixed its proportions and because it actually looks like an evolution. So without any further delay ... http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Pierrollon.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/PierrollonRevamp.png (Old | New) I've also revised Weebull's sprite, and I'm really fond of it, so no edits are going to be made there. That means I'll be moving on to new concepts. Hooray! ^^ I'd like to hear suggestions on how to improve from you guys, so don't forget to leave feedback and constructive criticism. |
Brilliant, just brilliant keep up the good work Dot.
I absolutely love the new Pierrollon Oh Dots you know for a poses of Clorince and Clorincess, I would use Gardevoir and Galade as reference, as they am basically the same size |
Quote:
Hm ... I was actually thinking about something similar, but the main problem is that for poses, Clorince and Clorincess have a somewhat careless nature, as opposed to Gallade and Gardevoir's serious one. I'll probably be using them for size reference though. |
You could always try Ludicolo's type of pose as it is the carefree pokemon
|
Quote:
|
You definitely improved the pose. That arm is still a bit funny with such a round curve. And since you darkened the wings the contrast between them and the arms has gone down and the arms don't stand out as much as they did before.
|
Quote:
And for the contrast bit, I don't get it, is it a good thing or a bad thing to have in a sprite? I actually liked Pierrollon more when I darkened it, so I don't know how to respond to this now. Thanks for the criticism Scarf! ^^ ~ Edit ~ So, I had some time, but I was too bored to sprite a new concept. The result of this boredom was a cute Larpau OW, and I'm pretty proud of how the end result looked. Beware though, I'm not so good at animating so any pointers about that would be appreciated. ^^ http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/LarpauOW.gif Larpau, the Worm Pokémon (Not for Public Use) This guy is the first time I've ever made an over-world, and it was fun without taking a lot of time to make. Expect more of this the next time I'm bored. =D All tips on how to improve it are welcome! ^^ |
Still bored ...
As a result, another over-world has been born ... er ... made. This time it's Pierrollon, since I seem to like that one a lot. http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/PierrollonOW.gif Pierrollon, the Rhythmic Pokémon (Not for Public Use) Man the designs on the wings were hard, but I like how the final version looks. Even though it's small, it doesn't lack any detail featured in the sprite, and I'm pretty pround of this achievement. ^^ I'm getting better at this every time I make something. So you'll probably be seeing Chrysil the next time I'm bored. I might have the energy to sprite something new sometime later, so an edit to this post should be expected. I'll probably be spriting Luvdisc's pre-evolution, since I don't feel I have the energy required to make something more complex. -.- ~ Edit ~ I'm finished with Luvid (Baby Luvdisc)! There's one tiny problem though, and that's photobucket not showing up properly on the browser window. I would've loved to post the sprite with the pokedex information in order to receive criticism and feedback, but uploading issues have to come up now. So, hopefully, I'll be able to upload it tomorrow if the site is working by then. T^T In the meantime, why not comment on the OW's I made? I'd like it if I get any comments about improving them. ~ The Next Day: Update ~ Guys, you let me down. No posts for a whole day? Two consecutive posts without any comment? That's cruel. Enough whining now, I've got an update to show everyone since this time photobucket actually worked. Introducing Luvid, the most likely penultimate baby that's going to be featured in my region. ^^ This sprite is so simplistic, yet I find it so adorable and pokemon-ish. An entry has been added to the ever-growing Pokédex! *** #??? - Luvid Water http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Luvid.png Lighthearted Pokémon ~ Luvid --http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/a/ad/Bag_Soothe_Bell_Sprite.png-> Luvdisc ~ ~ Luvid <-(No Picture)-- Luvdisc ~ (breed with Romance Incense attached) ~ LUVID are highly regarded as happy-go-lucky POKÉMON because of their often absentminded nature. They are rarely troubled and as such, usually have the patience to soothe other, unluckier POKÉMON. *** Before any of you comment about this, I know it's not facing the bottom left corner, and the reason here is because I wanted to portray it's distracted nature, so please don't say that it's not proper or any of that talk. On the sprite itself, I had a lot of fun doodling the original idea while I was supposed to be paying attention in Science class. It was even more enjoyable when I sprited it. I hope I receive positive comments on this one, although I wouldn't mind it if I receive criticism because feedback is my main motive. Name Origin: Luvid - (the 'Love/Luv' from Luvdisc and Cupid, could also be considered a play on the word 'Loved') Concept Design: As I mentioned above, it started life as a small heart on my Science Workbook. The heart then got lips where the dent was, eyes, and a visible cheek, which was followed by giving its more natural appearance. It also has a similar structure to an non-mature fish. *** And that's it, I hope I receive criticism this time. ^^ |
Very cool! you are good at sprites! are you making a full fakedex? if you are, that would be sweet!
|
Quote:
*** Although a small one, I happen to have an Update! This time it's the Romance Incense, which I've spent a while working on to get the shape right yesterday. This incense is the only discovered method of inducing Luvdisc's eggs into hatching into Luvid, it's infantile stage. The incense sports a candy pink color and a heart-shaped opening in the front, which reveals its light brown interior and may be used to place an item of choice (usually a small candle or the incense stick itself). http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/RomanceIncense.png (the Romance Incense) That the update for now, and I'd really like to receive feedback, especially tips on how to make the opening look like one. So, since I've got nothing more to state, I'll be adding this to the first post. ^^ |
Nice sprite work, keep it up
|
Loving the work as always Dots :D
For the baby version of Smeargle (the 1 before Scrabbit)you caled call it Scribbly, which comes from Scribble |
Quote:
Quote:
Smeargle's name origin comes from the words Smear and Beagle; similarly, Scrabbit's name comes from the words Scribble and Rabbit. This makes Scribbly, or any other variations of the name, fitting only for Scrabbit, and not Smeargle. Get what I mean? It's not that I don't like it or anything, in fact, I actually do like it, but it just doesn't fit the current case. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'd like to hear more from you, so don't hesitate to post any other notions you may have. ^^ Anyways, it seems like Mr. Baby here is cursed to not find a suitable name. Any help from you guys would really really really be appreciated on this topic. |
I thought of anohter name !!!
Pawstel- made from Paw and Pastel |
hey, really like the sprites.
Your Smeargle alt evo is really good. Also Luvid is a well designed sprite. Heres are a few ideas for the Smeargle prevo name, Inku, Acriby, Skechi. Inku - Ink Acriby - Acrylics Sketchi - Sketching. |
Hmm, so I was thinking about that prevo again... and what about...
*dramatic pause* Tulkid. o.o (as in tool kit/kid obviously) Also because it's known for making supplies (which can be tools) Idk... its late and I think it sounds cute... >_>; |

*** Since I finally received some really well-picked suggestions, I'll be commenting each and every one of them before announcing which one will be official. ^^ Star-Shower's Suggestion(s): ~ Pawstel - I like how you played on the words in such a cute manner, and it sounds so colorful and soft. The only problem I have with it is that it's a little long and doesn't flow well when you say it out loud. -.- PokemonSkySD's Suggestion(s): ~ Inku - It sounds so small and fit for a baby pokemon. It also seems to go well with the evolutions' names, so I have to say that I like this one. ^^ ~ Acriby - Acrylics sounds so sweet and unprofessional the way you played on the word. It also has the word 'crib' fitted into it, which sounds appropriate for a baby pokemon. ^^ ~ Sketchi - Personally I like how you played on the word, and I love how it seems so fitting, but the problem is it sounds too hard for a baby pokemon. That and the fact that it doesn't sound so pokemon-ish. -.- Colbex's Suggestion(s): ~ Tulkid - Cute! I like how you used the provided description to come up with the name. There's one problem though, 'tool kit/kid' usually refers to mechanical tools rather than artistic ones, which seems to be more of a 'heavy' reference for a baby pokemon's name. -.-' *** So the winning name is . . . . . . Without further ado . . . Inku! http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/BabySmSc.png (Inku, the Ambitious Pokémon) And the reason I've chosen this name is because it's simple and sweet. Also, it has the most connection with the evolutionary line, since Smeargle and Scrabbit both paint using inks given out by their bodies. With the formerly unnamed baby's case, the fact that he doesn't have the ability to excrete any color fluids causes him/her to resort to making those supplies - in other words, they make their own paints by whatever means possible, before rushing off to paint on any available surface. ^^ As promised, winner gets a custom sprite done, so congratulations PokemonSkySD! You can send me a request (as a PM) for one sprite whenever you wish to do so, and I promise I'll do my best to match it with the reference image. ^^ For all other people who suggested names, I deeply thank you for your efforts. I know it can't be helped but feeling a little disappointed. However, there is surely going to be more unnamed pokemon in the future, so no worries, you'll probably be getting the chance then. ^^ *** On further note, next in line to be sprited is either Cloble (the second evolution for my grass starter) or Merby (the water starter). |
I like that name to it's original :). I can't wait to see some more sprites. If you haven't got an idea for a fire starter how about mole or squirrel or dog. If you need any ideas or advice on anything Dots feel free to PM me as I have said before or contact me on Planetdev as i'm on there most of the time. Dots NO.1 FAN!!!!!
|
thanks for the offer dot, i'll think about what it'll be.
And Inku and Scrabbit are my two favs out of yours so far, keep it up. ;) |
Quote:
As for the fire starter, I'm not going with an animal, at least, not for now. I've got an a clover for the grass starter and a mermaid/merman base for the water starter. I'm going to need a concept for the fire starter that complements both of the other ones, so any idea on that? And thanks for the offer, I'll be sure to remember it. ^^ Quote:
As for the offer, it's completely up to you to send it as a PM whenever you feel like it. Just keep in mind that, as you can see from my works, I'm a spriter that prefers adorable pokemon, so sending me a concept I'll surely love would be motivating for me to work on. ^^ *** Update: An entry has just been added to the Pokédex! *** #002 - Cloble Grass http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Cloble.png Courteous Pokémon ~ Cleri (female) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorincess ~ ~ Cleri (male) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorince ~ ~ Respected for their dainty, polite nature, smaller POKEMON often regard it as a guardian because of its thoughtful personality and sensitive spirit. A trainer is usually proud of their accomplishments when they find that their CLERI are evolving. *** I'm really happy of how this turned out, especially the floral frills on it's arms and flower buds. Also, the more desaturated palette seemed to give it the mature, yet kind look I was going for here. However, the shading on the buds really annoys me, and I keep feeling that something is off there, but I just can't put my finger on it, so any help regarding that is most appreciated guys. Criticism is what makes me better, so if you really want to see me improving, don't forget to include at least a little bit of feedback on the sprite. Okay? ^^ Personally, I'm really hoping this concept receives positive comments. ^^ |
like the new sprite, but the lower right bud needs the shading worked into..
still really good. I PMed you about the sprite. Hope you like the idea. |
Whilst I think your technique is excellent, all of these sprites seem really samey, and consequently, for me at least, quite boring. They're all really sweet, happy little creatures, with round shapes and big eyes. I think you'd benefit from trying some more extravagant and darker designs. Even the fakémon listed as "Bug/Dark" still looks like a cute fairy, which is probably the idea - making it seem less sinister tricks the enemy - but I just think you could do so much more.
Anyway, keep up the good work! As I said, there's little wrong with your shading and line art, but I'd try something a little outside your comfort zone. Just my $0.02. :) |

Since the time I've gotten attached to the pokemon franchise, I've only been attracted to the pokemon that look cute or pretty. You can't believe how disappointed I was when my Totodile evolved into Croconaw while I was playing Crystal, and I guess that since then, I was imagining how a perfect region for me would look like. Sweet-looking, happy pokemon everywhere was how I wanted it, and now I'm back to thinking about it, reviving old concepts I had and revamping them while trying to create a region full of what I like. I get what you mean though, and that is, I should include variety. Also, about Pierrollon, I kind of know that it doesn't look so evil/sinister as the dark typing implies, but I'm quite attached to that design now, and it'll be hard for me if I was to scratch that concept or the typing. However, I'll most likely be having a few evil stereotype pokemon in the dex so look out for them. As for the extravagant designs, you'll be seeing some of those in the enar future. ;D I thank you again for the input, and I wold like to hear from you again. ^^ ~ Edit: Sprite Update ~ I've updated Cloble's sprite and fixed the shading on the buds. I like it better now. ^^ http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/Cloble.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ClobleEdit.png (Old > New) And as you guys already know, I'd love to hear criticism, so give it your all when posting. xD By the way, I was considering changing Chrysil's design to make him more cocoon-ish, since he now looks more like a pudgy worm. T^T What do you think guys? Should I, or should I keep him the same (if so, could you specify why)? |
great improvement there.
About Chrysil, have a go with making a cacoon version, post it, and see what people think. |

I have one tiny criticism of your clover. The smaller eye is basically diamond shaped, yes? And the two points are at the upper right and lower left ends. I think you should switch those to upper left and lower right since that's the way the head curves in that area and the eye should match that. The legs look a little plain to me, but that if you like them then that's okay. ( '')b |
I've noticed that the clover pattern on Cloble's face looks too straight with the way that the head is positioned, if that makes sense. What I mean is, the eyes and mouth make it look like it's looking slightly to its right, but the clover pattern on the face doesn't display that.
|
Quote:
Quote:
For the eye, it was diamond shaped because that's how I thought a round eye from the side would look. I think I understand what you're trying to say, so just give me a few seconds and I'll see how I can work that out. ... Here she is then, does the sprite look any better now? Also, the legs are plain because when I tried to add the designs from the original concept it ended up looking too crowded for my liking. And I like her better the way she is now. ^^ Thank you for the feedback Scarf! ^^ Quote:
I don't know how to fix that issue since I can't really see the error, but thank you for the input blackmoonflower! ^^ ~ Update ~ So, I've looked over Chrysil's sprite and I just can't manage to get rid of him, or separate him from his evolutions. That's why I've decided to keep him, even if he is a little too simple. ^^ A few minor edits were made though, and those are just to make him more fitting with the rest of the line. Here's the updated sprite: http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ChrysilEdit.png ---> http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Upcoming%20Fakedex/ChrysilEdit-2.png (Old > New) Now they all have blue eyes. xD By the way guys, I've been wondering about what to sprite next, since I don't feel like spriting Merby, the water starter for my region. What do you think guys? Should I sprite Kissedy (Jynx Evo) or should I sprite Dandecub (grass type found early on in game)? ~ Update - Again -.- ~ Question before is still open, so you guys can still answer. I've had a few minutes to work with, and I've come up with a new over-world. This time it's Chrysil. ^^ http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt262/ChocotheBear/Pokemon%20Misc/ChrysilOW.gif Chrysil, the Cocoon Pokémon (Not for Public Use) And now the line is complete. xD |
Hm... I'm gonna have to say:
Kissedy. =3 |
Quote:
I think it'd look better should the eyes be moved upwards more, more towards the center of the clover pattern, where the top 2 leaves meet the bottom 2. (Just using clover pattern as a description, not sure what you're aiming for) However, with the current eye placement, it could just be the fact the head is designed to look as though the sprite is facing forward. With those eyes, the head would be much better if it were "tilted" as if the sprite were looking slightly to our left. Look at Cleri, it's head is smaller, and it's slightly angled to it's right, thus, making it look at though it's looking that way. Whereas this sprite is looking to the left, but it's head is pointed forward. |

I'll also revise the sprite tomorrow, since my mind really feels cloudy today. Thanks for the input Myzou, I really appreciate the criticism and feedback in your post. ^^ |
I'd do the Jynx evo (needs a new name, because it doesn't go with the whole evo line, Smoochum,Jynx)but that's my opinion.
And also Cloble's head in my opinion just looks like Cleri's original sprite stuck on. My advice would be to change Cloble's left eye as it looks wierd. ^Sorry for the negagtivitiy but I hope it helps |
Quote:
Needs a new name, huh? Let's see : - We've got the baby, Smoochum ~ the name probably comes from the words 'smooch', meaning a kiss, and 'chum' as in friend. Another possibility is a play on the phrase "Smooch 'Em", which, in other words, means 'kiss them'. ... And we've got the evolution, Jynx ~ there's no name origin, as Jynx is a proper word, not a name. It means bad luck, or a hex/curse, which might be a reference to its poor luck at finding a love possibly due to its looks (as far as I know, there's no official reason, so this is just what I believe to be the reason). Finally, there's the name I chose for the second evolution in this line, Kissedy ~ the names comes from the two words 'kiss' and 'lady' (referencing to it's good looks after evolution); however, the 'a' in 'Kissady' which changed to an 'e' to make it flow well when spoken. I just noticed that it contains the verb 'kissed' which might lead to pronunciation confusion. Just to clear this matter up, the name is pronounced as 'kiss - addy'. Onto the next issue now, which I seem to be hearing a lot. Cloble looks too similar to Cleri in terms of face expression. My answer to this: they happen to be related. O.o The designs for those particular concepts belonging to this evolutionary line all happen to have large, round red eyes and a small smile. I know you're trying to help, but I love Cloble's design came out after it was sprited and I don't want to change the concept itself after getting attached to it. *** Anyways, for the others, I'd love to hear feedback on any sprite I have, and I'm all ears to anyone who is willing to explain the matter with the pattern on Cloble's face, which I can't seem to get without a visual example. Thanks to everyone for your help until now, I really appreciate how your feedback and criticism has made me into a better experienced spriter, and I'm going to keep practicing until I become one of the best. ^^ |
I'm gonna try to show u what I mean with Cloble's head.
http://i45.*.com/2h5jzfs.jpg As you can see I've used Cleri's head to show you how the clover should face,i then used the right eye as the left eye and moved the mouth. Hopefully you see what i mean. I thought of another name for KISSEDY, How about.... Pryncice |
Quote:
I think you guys got a little confused after seeing those two sprites in succession. Even though they look like they might, Cleri and Cloble have differently angled heads, which explains the pattern placement and how the head looks smaller than it is supposed to be. I would've responded with this explanation earlier if I had know that this was the misunderstanding. We can finally end this issue now. ^^ I like how you played on the words, but I have to say I find it a cold and distant name, unfitting for the concept I had in mind. Also, I already have Clorincess, which uses the word 'princess' in her name. Having another pokemon with a similarly structured name would just reflect back lazily. |
Oh, I understand they have differently angled heads.
However, the clover pattern on her head is facing forward, whereas her eyes say she's looking towards her right side. The eyes and the pattern are completely off. XD It looks like the eyes are on the side of her head the way it's done. |

~ Update ~
So, I've had some time and I was sort of bored, and I had a change of plans. I was in the mood of making something small and cute, so this update doesn't have Kissedy. It has my duckling fakemon, which will late evolve into a duck/goose one. Yay~ So here it is: I don't know what do to about it, since I don't like how the sprite came out. It's too monotonous for me and I keep finding it too simple to fit with the official style. Help, please? Any suggestions on color schemes or markings would be taken into consideration and appreciated, also, feel free to point out any flaws in the sprite itself so that I could fit it. And here's your chance for a custom sprite, since this fakemon has no name (it's going to be Water/Flying, and it's based of a duckling). I don't know if this will even make it into the dex, so I didn't bother with the entry. Once I decide on a design and feel satisfied with the sprite, I'll be adding it to the first post. I hope I'll be seeing some helpful feedback soon! ^^ |
I like it, but i think it looks like a Egg with wings :D
I would suggest looking at existing sprites such as; Pidgey and Psyduck to get a nice body shape and well proportioned features; it's beak is way to small and the colours are to light. Take Pidgey's sprite for example, it's got quite a thin head then gets plumper as it gets to the body and then thins out again. But this just goes from fat to thin without a nice gradual change. Hope that will help you :D |
I really like Scrabbit and Chrysil
Both are so adorable. ^^And you really did a good job with all of them. I don't have the patience to do sprites so I applaud you for these. =3 |
Hm, due to it's color scheme... I'd imagine it could be a dirty duckling/ugly duckling. The brown could represent muddiness and it could live in ponds. That being said, it's current appearance doesn't really look like it could even swim to begin with. You could make it where the feet are heading back(?) so it looks like it's swimming and maybe do a little to it's head. A ring around it's non-existent neck would also add more character to the sprite. I'd suggest using something such as Farfetch'd and Starly as bases on its design. OR you could keep it's shape and inspire it's design more on a floatation device or Buoy.
|
Most birds have some kind of visible plumage on their heads even if it's small. The ugly duckling's head seems very plain and the sprite as a whole is very smooth for a bird. Water fowl have slick, smooth bodies, I know, but a little bit of color or some extra design element (like feathers) could help make you like it more.

I'll see what I can do when I find that I have some free time. ^^ *** Thanks for the criticism everyone! Update! ~ And I've worked on it all right! I actually love it now, even those the changes weren't that heavy on the sprite. I'd like to hear from you and receive feedback and criticism to become better at this sort of thing. Feel free to point out any issues or flaws you find in the sprite. ^^ |
Looks way better :D
Any more ideas on what your gonna do next?? Maybe a Farfetch'd Evo... Talking about Farfetch'd the above pokemon looks like a pre evo :D |
Quote:
Farfetch'd Evo ... ? Weren't there rumors about an evolution for him and Delibird? Okay, so my unnamed duckling seems to resemble Farfetch'd a little. That creeps me out in a way since I wasn't even thinking about Frarfetch'd when I made this fakemon. And I already have two normal-type baby pokemon, so a third one would be a little over the top. Right now there are chances of having a baby Psyduck or a male version Smoochum (named Snochum) which would probably evolve into a snowman-like pokemon. By the way, the duckling is up for naming, if anyone cares to give a try. ~ Edit ~ Why did it seem like this got posted twice? O.o |
Hmm, the name for this 1 is hard :~
Maybe: Farfowl (Farfetched and Fowl) Sparrowl (Sparrow and Fowl) Murkling (Murky and Duckling) Hawkling (Hawk and Duckling) Herrowl (Herring(or herron i dunno how to spell it) and Fowl) Chickling (Chick and Duckling) Cockerowl (Cockeral and Fowl) |
What about Bobill? As in bobbing up and down (like a floatation device) and bill (as in duck bill). It's also a pun on the word bobble.
|
How about Puddill (Puddle and A Birds BILL)
I thought it sounded cute |
Ok, so a Duckling. hmm. Which looks like an Egg, and has a ring.
Dringel - D from duck + Ring then el to add a smooth soung too it. |
That is some nice Pokemon!
