You are in the challenge!

Michfan May 22nd, 2010 10:13 AM

Since nobody but myrrhman has done this type, I will accept the Grass type (I already listed myself as a Water and Ice-type champ from my Lapras from Suicune's challenge, but it's not official on your thread since it's "hacked", though I made it start at level 5). I'll be playing Poke Blue, btw.

All right, I'm not going to do twelve updates like I did in Suicune's thread. I'm going to update after every other Gym Leader.

First update:

I chose Bulbasaur (duh), beat OSUfan (my rival)
Trained it like a beast on Route 22, ended up being an Ivysaur by the time I got to Brock
Learned that Flying type moves will be the death of me (level 14 Spearow made my level 19 Ivysaur deplete more than half its health with two Pecks)
Caught a Paras at Mt. Moon, but not going to use it due to it being too weak
Beat OSUfan, Pidgeotto and Charmander took forever to take down (due to Sand Attacks)
Caught a Bellsprout and "caught" a Mew (for HM purposes)
Leveled up Bellsprout to make it a Weepinbell
Defeated Misty after one Growth and two Vine Whips per Poke
I'm now in Vermilion City, where Flying and Bug types continue to annoy me

This is my team as of arriving at V City. I don't plan to evolve Weepinbell until it learns Razor Leaf (which will be at level 38), and I could care less about it learning Slam.

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4374/weepinivy.jpg

Second update:

Challenge was much harder than I thought. Weepinbell keeps on fainting, lol
Found every trainer I could, evolved Ivysaur--Weepinbell is at level 31
Beat Lt. Surge, overused Sleep Powder and Growth to Vine Whip them to death
Taught TM08 (Body Slam) to Venusaur
Went through Rock Tunnel, blah blah blah...
Made it to Celadon, taught TM33 (Reflect) and Razor Leaf to Victrebel (evolved it at level 38)
Beat Erika by overusing Body Slam on Venusaur

Underoos May 31st, 2010 9:12 AM

It's been a while, and I blame school XD I should be studying for finals, but...I had this nagging urge to play Pokemon >> Anyway, here's a short little update.

-Battled all the trainers I could find, and I probably had to go to the Pokemon Center 20 times -_-;;
-Officially began to hate poison types with their freaking poisoning abilities -_-
-Headed over to Koga's gym, had to heal like three times before I got to him
-Beat Koga with Dratini, who managed to learn slam XD
-Dratini evolved into Dragonair! WHOO!
-Headed back up (or tried to, had to go back to Fuscia City and heal about five times) to Lavender Town
-Somewhere in my travels to Lavender, Pidgeotto evolved!
-Went on over to Saffron, and then to Celadon to go kill that Snorlax
-Successfully did so, and then went to Saffron

AnjinMiura_PL June 1st, 2010 6:46 AM

I started the game just after my post. So, 1st update is here ;)

Spoiler:

I would really like monotype challenges. I wasn't decided - poison or bug? Both are my favourite types. Poison maybe will be next, now - bug time :D

I started as Ober (as always), and my rival is Roman. Welcome in Bug Armageddon Story ;DD

My starter was Bulbasaur - I used him for beat Roman once, and as cover at first training. My first bug Pokemon was Weedle (Harry). I trained him in a route in the south of Virdian City to 10th level. When Harry evolved into Beedrill, I went to Forest for 2nd buddy. Caterpie of course. I named him Fairy (xD), and started hard training, which is usual. I was confused a little, 'cause Buttefree learned Confusion at 12, not 10 level. I guess I didn't play Red for ages ;)

First battle with Roman near Pokemon League was smooth, with Harry & Fairy at 10 lvl. Throught the Virdian Forest I battled Bug Catcher (poor noobz, only Ober can has strong Bugs in this game :D!) and grinded mah team a little. H&F had 15th Lvl, when I said to Brock: "Man, I wanna kick your rocky gray butt!". I kicked it, so Boulderbadge was mine.

Route 4 trainers fold to Bug Power as well, and I entered Mt.Moon. Paras. Most peoples says, that he is weak - not diz time. Bug Pokemon = mine Pokemon. I've looked for some strange name, I thought "Hmm, Angus is so strange as well". That, how Paras was named. But he had 8th level, when rest of team 17th! "What tha hell, I must train it again..." Yeah, I trained, my team was 20th levels, when I entered to Mt.Moon again.

I won, no doubt, Rockets are fools, I was near the Cerulean. First person in Cerulean who sight us was Roman - defeated as well. Nugget acquired, trainers lost their faces, time to visit Bill. He gave me ticket to SS-Anne with words "Have fun mah friend ^.^".
I didn't expected that Bill is agent of german intelligence, working in Kanto. Why do Germans wanna enter to Vermillion City? What tha hell? Or it was S.S.Anne...nevermind.

Time to visit Misty. Harry was the man of the match, by beating all water Pokemons in the hall, and grabs Bubblebeam TM from Misty's pocket. Ober ran away as fast, as he could, he entered some house, ran throught it, and met...Rocket. He didn't want to let Ober go, so Fairy make some funky confusions. After that policeman said, that "you are hero, blablabla...", and we have 2 TMs for nothing ;) Angus learned Dig - it will be useful against Lt.Surge.

In the last battle before enter to Vermillion, Angus evolved into Parasect. Now you'll see, trainers in SS-Anne! Or S.S.Anne...geez.

http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/3072/ssanne.png

I'm so far now, so maybe it will be 2nd update today too ;)
Ober

(And it's Pkmn Red, just coloured or sth. I like it much more than black&white ;))

peopleperson June 1st, 2010 8:33 PM

I think I'll take this challenge. I'll be using the ground type(:D) on Pokemon Blue and updating shortly.
edit: updates below

Spoiler:

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8828/51255223.png

-caught my future Nidoking and Nidoqueen :)

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7206/77464672.png

-defeated Brock; was a close match, a critical tackle from onix(level 14) KOd nidoran male(level 10), luckily that didn't happen to nidoran female(level 11)

-just caught a geodude(level 10) in mt. moon!

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/8610/20599302.png

- just beat misty. it was a LOT easier with nidorino than a premature nidoking for obvious reasons. i think ill hold off on evolution until horn drill, so i can TM teach it to nidoqueen. it'll also help with erica. here are my pokemon right now.

AnjinMiura_PL June 2nd, 2010 4:26 AM

2nd update comes here ;)

Spoiler:

Yeah. My superb bug team entered the S.S.Anne. There were no nazis or rockets, so ship was safe. Some people on the ship wanted to fight - more Exp for me, good. I defeated Roman, helped to the Cut Master...what else can I say...S.S.Anne clear, route in the east of city too. Vermillion Gym was strucked by Angus with Dig. It helped him to gain 30th lvl as well. And now it's time for place, which we everybody love - Rock Tunnel.

And really now, what else to say? I defeated Roman, blacked out Rockets from Game Corner, bought Take Down (Harry) and Razor Wind (Fairy). After that, i've sneaked through da Cycle Road to catch Venonat (26 lvl, Nightmare). He hasn't had Confusion...woot. I learn him Psychic (maybe it was waste, but nvm). Grinding time in Ghost Tower, I grinded Nightmare (Venomoth, yeah, Psybeam, yeah) and Fairy to 38 lvl. Angus and Harry had 35, but Celadon Gym was their too. It helped them 2 gain 37 lvls.

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3766/gymz.png

My last bug Pokemon will be Scyther, if I ever find them. I also want Mew to be my multislave, so I must catch some flyin' Pkmn for an action (no one can learn Fly in my team). That is the plan, yeah.

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/9161/teamlc.png

3rd update after first step at Cinnabar Island.

Ramsie June 3rd, 2010 10:40 AM

I'll do the Poison type on Blue, please.

AnjinMiura_PL June 3rd, 2010 12:26 PM

Okay, third!

Spoiler:

Time beetwen battle with Erika and first steps in Cinnabar was full of pwning. I made Mew my HM slave, as Mew is good for this work. Mew holds Strength, Surf, Fly and Flash ;) Most important slave ever I see.

As always, Ober trained his team and added fifth member - new member means more training, sir. I catched Scyther[23] in Safari Zone. Yeah, bug pokemon without bug attacks...sounds cool. But we gonna try it. I cleared two roads to Fuchsia, route from Fuchsia to Seaform, then from Pallet to Cinnabar, and from Cinnabar to Fuchsia. Clearing Silph from Rockets was also very helpful. Anyway, levels in my team are still low, and I see that I must launch my small sweet training place in Ghost Tower, before I'll pay a visit to a Victory Road.

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1130/timbug.png

My team indeed.
Next update...hm. I'll see. Before E4 I think ;)

TehYoshiNinja June 4th, 2010 2:44 AM

Okay, so I'm starting again, due to having a) picked Bug last time, and b) having not been on in about a decade, the time during which the previous thread died. So, ONWARD!

Aha! I didn't post because I didn't see I'd been added... so here we are!

My Sucky Progress So Far:

Okay, here we go... Flying Monotype. These updates are going to be pretty long as updates go, I think. I'm doing them once every Gym.
Started up Red, named myself SPLASH for lulz. Rival is TOAST for more lulz.
Collected my Potion, blablah...
Chose Charmander for obvious reasons. Named him ANIJATOR as a retarded in-joke.
Wiped the floor with TOAST's Squirtle, then headed up to Viridian.
http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_02.png
I changed the colour scheme to pink-and-red after this to avoid boredom.

Grind, grind, grind. While grinding, I catch a Pidgey (DONTMADDER = Another stupid in-joke) and a Caterpie->Butterfree (MOTHRA).

Training MOTHRA is a real pain, mainly due to its utter failure of defense. And attack.
Eventually though, they're all at level 13. Beat TOAST in about two seconds, and... Viridian Forest. Pathetic. Everyone's at Lv.15 or higher. Charmander's evolved.
Straight to the Gym. Trainer and Brock both owned immediately.
http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_04.pnghttp://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_06.png

Right, that's update #1 done.
POKEYMEN SO FAR::
-Charmeleon / ANIJATOR, Lv.16
http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/2/20/005.png
* Ember
* Growl
* Scratch

-Pidgey / DONTMADDER, Lv.16

* Quick Attack
* Sand-Attack
* Gust

-Butterfree / MOTHRA, Lv.16

* Confusion
* Stun Spore

MOAR UPDATES SOON!!

Okay, so I got bored. Did Misty.

MY SUCKY PROGRESS:

Well, after the mediocrity of Brock, I was expecting Mt Moon to be a cakewalk with my stupidly-named Pokeymen. Well, it was. For the most part. Except for one thing:

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_01.png

Yeah, that. Eventually, out of sheer frustration, I caught one of the damn things. Named him OMNOMNOM.

DONTMADDER also evolved.
http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_08.png

The rest of Mt Moon was uneventful. Took the HELIX FOSSIL because it was the closest.

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_03.png
Picked up mah Great Ball, and I headed up to Bill's. TOAST was a cakewalk. Plowed through him with Confusion.

After all those damn trainers and that freaking kid with the Slowpoke, I was left with this dungheap of a team:
http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_04-1.png

Got my S.S. ANNE TICKET from Bill, then sped back to PokeCentre. Then, THE GRINDING BEGAN.

At first, it was going slow. Reeeeal slow. By the fact that OMNOMNOM was about as bad as Caterpie.
After about half an hour (spacebar turbo included), I'd finally gotten OMNOMNOM to the freaky RB Golbat sprite.

And, into Misty's!

Swimmer and Picknicker were pathetic, as was Staryu. Starmie, however....

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/TehYoshiNinja/Pokemon%20Red%20Monotype%20Challenge/PokemonRedUS_12.png

BUBBLEBEAM! BUBBLEBEAM! WATER GUN! BUBBLEBEAM! SUPER POTION! X DEFEND! BUBBLEBEAM AAAASDFASDFASDFAFGSDJFASK

Finally, though, I beat the damn star with Seismic Toss. And got mah Cascadebadge.

MOAR UPDATES SOON!!

(Oh, and sorry about the overload of images.)

myrrhman June 5th, 2010 8:19 AM

oh don't worry about images. Some people prefer to not type anything in and only post images, its really just whatever floats your boat. welcome to the challenge!

Emlam June 5th, 2010 9:26 AM

As someone not currently participating in this challenge, let me just pop in and agree that without a proper Grass type (Oddish just barely counts) MISTY'S STARMIE IS THE WORST. Brock is easy enough with anything, Surge is a joke if you have a Ground type, but that freakin' Starmie always KO's my Pikachus. ><

.Kaiser June 5th, 2010 9:36 AM

Emlam, it's called grinding.
:D

Emlam June 5th, 2010 10:22 AM

Sure, but my point is you can beat the gyms directly before and after Misty with pretty weak Pokemon; Starmie seems disproportionately strong. :P

myrrhman June 5th, 2010 11:42 AM

It is, but that's because
a) Brock has no Rock type moves. And any intelligent player can get around Onix's Bide with growl or tail whip or something. This makes Pokemon like Butterfree usable (because if Onix knew Rock Throw it would be ridiculous).
b) as you said, Lt. Surge is a joke if you have a Ground type Pokemon. The most commonly used is either Geodude or Diglett. If you have a Geodude, only normal type attacks hit, and are not very effective. If you have a Diglett, you take more damage, but are faster. His signature move is Thunderbolt, which doesn't effect either of those Pokemon.
c) Once again on Lt. Surge, you are required to get the move Dig before you fight him. In Red/Blue, Dig is overpowered (100 Power, 100 Acc.). Many Pokemon can learn this move, including your starter unless you chose Bulbasaur (which you don't have because we're talking about how hard Misty is without a proper Grass type), so there is a good chance that at least one of your Pokemon can get near a OHKO on all of his Pokemon. But with Misty, there's just no way around her signiture attack, Bubblebeam, which has a base 97.5 base power (65 + STAB bonus). The only Pokemon that can resist this move that early in the game are Squirtle/Wartortle, Paras, or like Magikarp (which I doubt you will try to use unless you evolve it by then, which again, I doubt).

Edit: I changed the rule about no Ghost, Ice, or Dragons. Some of you guys (me included) are doing the Ultimate Monotype Challenge in various types, and I want the rules here to match the rules there. So, if you are using one of those types, hack it in at the beginning. Otherwise, no hacking. And with that, I am starting my Ghost Challenge!

TehYoshiNinja June 5th, 2010 1:27 PM

Ah, sweet. However... due to my tendency to forget to save, and the suckiness of my laptop...

Riiiight as I finished up in the SS Anne, I kinda got a Blue Screen of Death -.-

Typing this on my friend's computer. Until it gets fixed, there'll be no updates, unless I start yet ANOTHER Monotype.

myrrhman June 5th, 2010 4:40 PM

well, i have a bit of time to play before dinner.

Part 1: The spooky beginning

Today was a big day. I turned 10 and got my first Pokemon. Professor Oak had three choices for me and his grandson, Spam. I got to choose between a Bulbasaur, a Charmander, and a Squirtle. I picked Bulbasaur, because I liked the vines that it could use. Stupid Spam chose the Charmander, I think just because it was strong against me. We battled afterwards, and I won. I went to the nearby city to buy some Pokeballs so I could start my adventure. But, the store clerk made me go take Oak a Package. When I got back, I got a Pokedex in exchange. Then, I made it to the city a second time. I bought a couple of Pokeballs and went to the nearby route, to catch some Pokemon. All of a sudden it got all cold. I could see a ghost up ahead, and it was looking at me. I sent out Bulbasaur for protection. Bulbasaur spit seeds at the ghost from on its back, and somehow they hit the ghost. It gave Bulbasaur a big lick on the face. How weird. Then, I could see the seeds sprouting all over the Ghost's body. Life force seemed to suck itself out of the ghost and into bulbasaur, which made it feel better. Bulbasaur couldn't hit it with tackle, so he had to just growl at it. Eventually, when enough life force had drained from it, I decided to throw a Pokeball. One wiggle. Two wiggles. Three wiggles. The ghost was mine. I decided to name it Reaper. Reaper and I started training. I realized he could lick opponents, confuse them, and use some weird attack that turned the air dark and hurt them. I decided to name the attack Night Shade.

Reaper and I trained and trained, all over the place. We beat Spam again and I realized how good Reaper was. Pretty soon after that, I found myself fighting a Gym Leader, Brock. But if this battle proved to be like any of the others, Reaper would once again be untouchable. He was. I went into a cave after battling a few trainers.
Gave up on writing a story.
Beat Spam, and realized that Ghost doesn't effect Psychic in this generation. WTF?
Evolved Reaper on the slowpoke trainer.
Got to Bill and got the ticket.
Beat Spam.
Got Cut and got the Bike Vocher.
Went to fight Lt. Surge to try and get another move.
Opened the doors on my first attempt (although the first switch was in the last can that I checked). This is a first.
Got out of the Rock Tunnel paralyzed with 4 HP left. Phew.
Beat Erika after getting psychic and one hitting the entire fighting dojo without healing. This completed my moveset of Psychic, Mega Drain, Thunderbolt, and Hypnosis.
Beat Koga and Blaine easily.
Sabrina gave me problems, but I beat her.
Giovanni was easy, as was Spam.
Got through Victory Road.
Loreli was easy. Thunderbolt didn't kill dewgong, so while it rested i used mega drain and then another thunderbolt. Cloyster and slowbro fell to one thunderbolt each. Jynx and lapras took two each.
Bruno took 5 hits. 3 were psychic and 2 were mega drain.
Agatha was the toughest, and all of her ghosts took multiple hits. The other two did not.
Lance couldn't touch me (I think, the battle went by so quickly)
Had to use an elixer.
Rival lost to thunderbolt, hypnosis thunderbolt thunderbolt, mega drain, hypnosis and a few psychics, thunderbolt, thunderbolt thunderbolt.

And I won! 4/15 done.

TehYoshiNinja June 5th, 2010 11:27 PM

Well... that was quick XD

Nice run. What level was Reaper by the end? Must have been pretty high.

moon June 6th, 2010 1:34 AM

Argh, I'll try this again.

I'll use pokémon Blue and go with Psychic type. To feel like a superhero, blasting everything away with Kadabra~

EDIT:

Kay update. I picked Bulbasaur, just to beat the first gyms quickly before I can get my hands on Abra and Drowzee. Though, I'll need to use Bulbasaur a bit more, since Abra doesn't learn any attacking move before evolving, right? :/ unless I'll get Drowzee before that... anywhoo.

Beat Rival, got pokédex, got through Viridian, beat Brock on first try.

Just checked. He was at level 63. So yeah, pretty high. I'm doing the ultimate monotype challenge in every type, so now i'm trying to determine if i want to do all the gen 1 games first, or do it by type.

Lol, I remember my psychic run. It was so easy. I thought I would be using Kadabra for most everything, but as soon as I beat Misty and the Pokemon Tower, I went all the way to Fuchsia and got a Starmie, then went back and completely destroyed everyone with it. But yeah, you can use your Bulbasaur to help train Abra, that's what I did.

Well, you can always teach it some stupid little TM like Mega Punch if you really want it to be able to attack. :P

It hasn't got that big ATK stat though, right? So it wouldn't be that great :p but yeah, I guess.
