Mate

How often do you say mate? Have you ever said it? Why/why not?

loliwin May 6th, 2010 4:44 AM

I say it a lot. I say it naturally and it sounds cool, mate. :D

Cherrim May 6th, 2010 5:01 AM

It's... really not used here unless you're talking about animals mating. And that said, I really don't use it very often. XD;

It just sounds weird if it's not said with an accent. :(

perfectmonster May 6th, 2010 5:36 AM

I know! We Australians are typically thought to say 'Mate' at the end of every sentence XD Its so silly! :D

Guillermo May 6th, 2010 5:48 AM

Ugh, hardly ever. Literally never. :(

Gary, the Magic Fairy May 6th, 2010 8:10 AM

I can't say I've ever said it before. Ever.

Okami Chi May 6th, 2010 8:12 AM

I never say it because I live in a nicel ittle place called the U.S.A. where people are biased. :D Well I typed it once on Runescape for fun and giggles.

I use it online rather often...mostly mockingly when giving advice to newbies. But since I live in Texas and have an American accent, I never use it in spoken conversation. I do occasionally use the word "buddy" in place of where "mate" would go in the stereotypical Australian accent. XD

Binary May 6th, 2010 8:27 AM

Yeah, mate ;D
I rarely say it. But it feels good :3

Yusshin May 6th, 2010 8:40 AM

I use it for animals. Humans don't have mates; we have "partners" or "significant others."

If you mean Australian slang, I use it in the regard of "chum", too.

Porygon-Z May 6th, 2010 9:03 AM

I'm british so I say it to my mates.

Also say it llike mate if they've just said something that's just weird and wrong or yeah mate if they've just said/done something epic

mondays suck May 6th, 2010 9:09 AM

I actually have never used that word yet, because I'm no native English speaker, and on the internet I didn't have the need or occassion to use it yet.

Sylphiel May 6th, 2010 9:18 AM

I'm another person who uses it only when referring to animals. For any other use, I honestly don't remember when was the last time I said it.

Just not part of my regular vocabulary and I don't hang around anybody who uses it like that, is all.

mikey May 6th, 2010 10:15 AM

I never say it, I can't even remember if I ever have xD

Esper May 6th, 2010 10:17 AM

The last time I used it was when I was getting Australian accent lessons from a friend, but being American it makes me think of nature programs before anything else.

Honest May 6th, 2010 1:20 PM

I thought mate was British...

A few times, actually. D=

I'm American, but I just say it a few times to annoy my friends. Seriously. xD

hiphiphippo May 6th, 2010 4:30 PM

i dont say it ever o_o unless i'm referring to animals

but i think it's cool/funny when people say it :D

Was just about to say that. It's so true around here..

Morkula May 7th, 2010 7:15 AM

I never say "mate" unless I'm picking on some of my Aussie friends.

Otherwise I only say it when talking about animal procreation. :x

Zebeedoo May 7th, 2010 7:59 AM

I only say it as sarcasm toward my cousin. Other than that, I don't say it often.

Eternal Nightmare May 7th, 2010 8:06 AM

I really don't use the word but I have friends here who do, so I guess I'm cool with it n_n'.

Åzurε May 7th, 2010 8:38 AM

Well, it comes up in biology homework occasionally. :\/

Never really. Never had a reason to.

Bluerang1 May 7th, 2010 10:09 AM

I say it when I'm trying to sound smug and propah Bri'ish. I'm in the UK you see so it's common.

Mattysaurus May 7th, 2010 7:37 PM

Never. Ever. Ever.

I've never heard it before, 'cept on TV.

donavannj May 7th, 2010 9:46 PM

Well, it varies... since I like variety in my words. Primarily I use it when referring to animals, but I use so many other words and phrases in its place that I use it just as often for that as I do when referring to an acquaintance. Buddy, pal, dude, and "this guy" are used pretty often around here in its place, though.
