Do you ever question whether you're talking to real people on PC?

Sometimes it may just hit you where you just question whether the people on here are real, by their stupidity, or by their knowledge - and are programmed just to post. But, yeah, do you ever question it? Not that you'd believe it, just sometimes wonder, I guess.

hiphiphippo May 14th, 2010 5:50 PM

i've never really thought about it here, but in other places online, yeah. it sorta creeps me out when i wonder if they're like pedophiles or something D:

loliwin May 14th, 2010 5:54 PM

Well I do believe im talking to real people if I saw pictures of them etc. XD

im real. :)

EmeraldSerenade May 14th, 2010 6:56 PM

Yes, I do. I don't like talking to fake people D;

If they have posted a picture, most of the time I assume that their real :D

Yusshin May 14th, 2010 6:59 PM

but what if we don't want to show our picture online for various reasons (morals, values, lack of confidence, avoiding people editting it and posting it to mock you)? That makes us not real :s? Not very nice!

I don't question it, no. I question that kind of stuff on crappy sites like MyYearBook. 1/2 the people there are fake. My sister has discovered a lot of fakes on there, and she's told constantly that she's fake. Blargh.

Timbjerr May 14th, 2010 7:19 PM

I highly doubt most bots can make posts as eloquently as some of the people that roam OVP and OC. XD

Actually, the thought never crosses my mind. With the rate that Nica makes new blog entries and threads in OVP, I can swear she's a robot though. XD

About a year ago, I did question whether the people I talked to via PC and MSN were "real" due to the reactions of people I knew irl. However, I've now gotten to the point where I trust my instincts in regards to the legitimacy of the people I talk to and I know that the people I'm good/best/close friends with are, indeed, "real" people. (That said, seeing them on wecam and talking on Skype is always a nice way to confirm my instincts. n3n;)

Hantsuki May 16th, 2010 9:57 AM

Well, it's not that I question if they are a real person, but whether they were who they said they were.

And that isn't limited to just PC. The Internet isn't a reliable place in general as far as obtaining "serious answers" for lack of a better phrase. I mean, people can make up stuff and you can never prove if they are telling the truth or not. Even if someone shows pictures of themselves, how do you know it is not a picture of someone else instead? I just don't take a lot of things seriously online.

ANARCHit3cht May 16th, 2010 10:08 AM

I wonder, but who doesn't? To be honest, I don't really care, that is, unless we really start to get talking. If they are real, I like them more than someone who is fake.

Miz en Scène May 16th, 2010 11:01 AM

I don't question on whether the people are real or not. Frankly, I couldn't care less. Being introverted makes it easier for me to communicate my thoughts easily through the screen than through words and facial expressions. The fact that the people on PC may or may not be real makes the process easier. The fact that these people have feelings makes it hard.

OokamiShipper May 16th, 2010 11:01 AM

Wait a minute, so I've been talking to robots for the past year? xD

So fake as in they're not really who they say they are?

I dunno whether it's because I'm naive or something, but I've never questioned it. xP

The friends I've made here...they're real enough for me.

Zebeedoo May 16th, 2010 11:07 AM

I usually believe everyone here is real. If I saw a picture of them I'd believe it more though.

Except those BUY CHEAP *Insert product here* people.

Mattysaurus May 16th, 2010 12:38 PM

I never question it.

Unless they ask for 'TEH N00DS PLZZZZZ!!' Then, they are probably fake, or pedos. >:

Åzurε May 16th, 2010 1:01 PM

For the most part, it feels like real people. Occasionally someone will pop up whose only post is advertising a website, and it's pretty much a bot, or someone who doesn't quite get it. But I like PC for it's people.

Cherrim May 17th, 2010 6:59 AM

No, I know AI (especially posting bots) aren't advanced enough. The only contextual one I've ever seen was still waaaay off the mark! (Was posting about red vs blue as a wallpaper colour choice rather than the Pokémon versions being polled. xD) So I never wonder if I'm interacting with someone who's real or a bot or anything.

But I do often wonder whether certain members are trolls or not. :( Sure, some are obviously who they say they are but then there are others whose personalities are so far out that it doesn't seem like they're a plausible person and they "have" to be exaggerating or trolling to incite reactions form people. They're real people but using fake personas is what I'm getting at, I suppose.

Thank you.

I don't post pictures, I don't ask for pictures, I don't think about pictures, and frankly find it doesn't impact me in any way.

If anyone gives me the LOL YOU SHOULD JUST GIVE PICTURES soapbox speech I give them the typical silent treatment, or a nice cup of block depending on my mood and whether the chat area incorporates blocking people.

To those of us who are tech savvy it's 100% obvious when and if someone is a bot. Bots try to chat with me all the time on MSN. It's always "LOL WEBCAM PLZ" out of nowhere.

I can tell which ones are the bots because they give links. The humans that are just being obnoxious just invite for webcam.

I've yet to cave in to the level of boredom required for me to actually click on one of those links to find out what the bot is trying to pull.

Kinda like that time I deliberately clicked on an obvious Myspace Phishing link to see what it looked like. (The URL was : rnyspace.com ... I lol'd)

DarcyBangBang May 19th, 2010 10:46 AM

If there someone to talk to I could care less, but when they pull the whole omg I like you we should meet yeah you best prove to me who you are >.>

Eternal Nightmare May 19th, 2010 11:15 AM

I hope the people I talk to are real people o_o. However, I think talking to some android or magical creature would be cool xD.

Point it is, yes I believe the people here are real people not artifical beings. I don't technically have to see a picture of them to prove they are human its thhe emotion and some of the feelings, as well as mindset, that allows me to say that these people are human.

Offtopic: I remember way back when when I actually used MSN ime and my brother would talk to this computer operater sytem. We told it to shut up once and literally it didn't respond back after plenty of rude messages untill we said sorry. Messing with that thing was funny and not to mention as soon as you would send your message you would get it back 2 seconds later.

Sydian May 19th, 2010 11:17 AM

Not really. I've seen most on webcam or have talked to them before. So I really ain't worryin' too much.

Alkaide May 20th, 2010 7:08 AM

Such a thought never pricked me actually, but this thread made me think....wow!

Sometimes I feel that how can people make about 22 thousand posts or more, do they spend most the time of their life here~

Bluerang1 May 20th, 2010 10:03 AM

Not just on here but all over the internet. However, one thing I dread the thought of is if someone you know online dies. You won't really know and it's sad :(

600th! Booyah! Please don't let this distract you from the deepness of the sentences above.
