Getting Motivated to clean

My apartment is very messy. If I don't clean it soon, I'm going to get sick. But I can't seem to get motivated to clean it. Everytime I try to go and clean I'm too sleepy to do it, and I feel like I've got no energy. I've tried that thing with listening to music, or watching TV while you work, it didn't work. And when I tried to just force myself to do it anyway, I got a stress headache and I almost blacked out. So, anyone got any ideas on what could get my motivated to clean my apartment?

Zet May 19th, 2010 7:28 AM

I don't need any motivation. You gotta do what you gotta do.

....and no one wants to be in a dirty, messy room :(

Cherrim May 19th, 2010 7:30 AM

Just... do it.

Pick one area and decide you won't take a break until that area is tidied. Then move onto another area after taking a 10 minute break (or so) until you've cleaned the whole room. Repeat in other rooms as needed.

Once you start seeing actual progress in smaller areas, it's easier to make yourself do the rest.

If my room starts to look cluttered, yeah I'll clean it. Otherwise, I do need motivation, whether it's getting my laptop back (it's seriously been taken away because I left clothes in the floor on a day I nearly missed the bus) or getting to go on a date (yum ;] ), so that's all the motivation I need. Otherwise, my room stays pretty clean. Well, in my standards. I have clutter lying around because people tend to buy me little knick knacks that I don't want and can't use. Plus there's some temari in the floor that I can't hang up til I move out, so where else am I supposed to put them? They sure do take up a lot of space though.

Bacterial and fungal infection. Is that enough motivation? Your weaking your immune system by being in such an environment. No one likes cleaning but ya gotta do it.

Dress up as a maid?

No, really. If you look the part, you can feel the part and maybe even do the part.

Personally I've a less costly way of doing this, which is to picture myself as one of my own original characters, two of which are full-time maids. Saying that though I do seem to have a more active imagination than most, so it most probably won't be quite that easy for you.

I imagine this sounds pretty silly, especially so coming from me of all people, but with everyone else justing going "do it anyway"... well, you know, that's just depressing, so above is something a bit more... constructive? I can only hope.

Get someone to slap you until you finish cleaning.

Work room by room. Easiest way to go about it. And open a window to get some fresh air in there. (b'-')b

Blast some music! It always motivates me and it keeps me on track.

"Dont stop believin'! You can clean, clean, clean it!"

luf100 May 19th, 2010 6:55 PM

Well, when I started finding ants in my room... that motivated me. Now I keep it clean.

Invite someone over a few days from now. Make it someone who you'd be really embarrassed to let see your messy place. You'll want them to have a good impression so you'll be motivated to clean.

This is good! When I hoover I like to put "I Want To Break Free" by Queen on and do it all to the rhythm. Occasionally I cross-dress as well.

I thought I was the only one who cleans in rythm x3. I usually just put my iPod on shuffle and clean to whatever song is playing(:

When I clean, I get a mop and start singing around. XD

Just clean it, I love cleaning I don't know why. Or do this:

Heaps of sleep, a nice big breakfast, and just do it. Maybe it'll be easier if you just do say, 30 mins a day? and while your not cleaning up the clutter, don't make any extra mess

Captain Fabio May 20th, 2010 4:08 AM

I don't like to live in a scheiße hole.

If my room is a mess, I clean it.

Guillermo May 20th, 2010 5:22 AM

I can't stand living in a mess, even if I'm not forced to clean it.

If you want to clean your room up, listen to music, and at the end of it, reward yourself.

This is what I was going to suggest:

When I'm away at school I pretty much only clean for inspections or when my parents are going to come and visit. Having someone scheduled to visit who you do not want to see the mess is a great motivator.

Enough motivation ... ?

My room/house is pretty much the only place where I "let" myself make a mess, which is a bad habit I picked up from my dad. He just let things pile up and never liked it when anybody organized, because he knew where things were within the mess. When other people cleaned, he couldn't find anything.

When I know I need to clean, I don't think about it like "man I need to spend all day cleaning." I work in bits and pieces, starting on one part of my desk and moving over to the other side, then if I still feel up to it I'll organize the papers on the floor, go from the papers to the bookshelf, etc. Same goes for my room, especially when it comes to laundry.
For me, thinking about it like I need to clean my room reminds me too much of when I had to do it when I was younger, and I have the tendency to obsess over cleanliness if I get going, so I limit myself to maybe half an hour/forty-five minutes split up every few days.
