Pokémon Sepia Version

This thread is up for archival purposes. If you want to see my most recent ROM hack, Pokémon Cobalt, click me.

Pokémon Sepia

Sepia was a ROM Hack of Pokémon Firered BPRE in English.

You live in the small town of Cyan with your mother, where you have been all your life.

You lead a peaceful life, where you spend most of your time studying natural disasters in awe, or competing with you all-time rival, who, behind all the rivalry and competitiveness, you are great friends with.

On the turn of your twelfth birthday, with your mother's Skitty for protection, you travel to the neighbouring town of Auburn to get your official starter Pokémon - the first step to your quest to defeat the Gyms and the Pokémon League of the Imphan region.

Little do you know of the evil occuring elsewhere...

Features

  • The Hoenn region returns.
  • Fakemon.
  • Minigames and sidequests.

Screenshots

Special Thanks and Credits

  • Chibi Robo - Spriting.
  • Tool Makers - Tools
  • HackMew - ASM.

Wow looks good
Cant wait for beta
if you need any ow
gimme a call

Looks great so far, Ice. I like the fact that you've kept the details of the story a mystery, too many hacks are completely transparent--what you read in the thread is what you get in the game.
I'm curious to see if you'll put your spriting skills to use for this hack.

I'll bear that in mind if I ever need some help. :D

It was the intention. Glad to see you think it was done well. :P
There will be some fakemon here, as I mentioned in the features. I'll be making a majority of them by myself, so, yeah, my "skills" (or so you call them XD) will be included.

Mana May 20th, 2010 11:12 AM

I like how (I think?) you are trying to maintain Fire Red style with the colour named towns. The story is very mysterious, it would be nice to have some ~mystery~ screens to give some hints of the story without giving anything much away because at the moment it's fairly generic.

One slight thing that puts me off is the grass tiles, it makes my eyes go weird XD.

Good luck, I'll be keeping an eye on your progress ;D

miksy91 May 20th, 2010 11:43 AM

This looks pretty good, now that scrapbox is gone, it's hard to find good hacks here anymore...

Anyway, I don't know if you had planned to but don't change tiles, at least not to D/P/P ones. They're overused these days and I think the nintendo's ones fit in well too :)

Yeah, all of the cities and towns are named after colours, like the official games. I see where you're coming from, and I'll get some screenshots that relate to the actual plot as I progress.

I need to fix up some of the tiles, but it isn't my main priority right now. Thanks, SwiftSign!

Well, to be honest, the scrapbox didn't really have good 'hacks'. Good ideas, perhaps. But not really hacks.

I completely agree with you on the tile matter. As I said to SwiftSign, though, I do need to tweak what has been inserted anyway. Thanks!

Anyway, I've had these fakemon for quite a while, but I've increasingly gone off of their names, which were originally Boaru and Inopyre, respectively. If anyone can come up with a relatively good name, I might give the winner a cameo of sorts in-game (mind you, only relatively minor characters - they may earn themselves a sidequest or something, but nothing huge).

How do you think we become mods?
Thanks.

Lol
The fakemon look good
I was thinking
most hcks and pkmn games
have pokeballs when you select starter pokemon
i could make you OWs of the starters and ahve it so you choose the actaul pokemon ;)

miksy91 May 20th, 2010 12:28 PM

You misunderstood me as I seemed to explain too briefly :O
I meant to say that now progressing hacks -subforum has many hacks in it that would belong to the former scrapbox, and so it's hard to find good hacks in this forum :D

Ooo, how about:

Firelet (Like Piglet since it's unevolved) and Charogyre (Cha-r(H)og-(P)yre).

altariaking May 20th, 2010 12:40 PM

hack looks pretty good, and the fakemon are well sprited.
how about naming the small one
boabust (boar + combust)
and the big one
hogcano (hog + volcano)
i suck with names...

PeregrineFig May 20th, 2010 12:50 PM

For names, I think Colpig (Coal Pig, obviously) and Cindine (Cinder Swine) would sound good.

LassLaura May 20th, 2010 1:28 PM

I suggest Pignite (pig + ignite) and Pignition (pig + ignition) for the fakemon (which are actually the names 4chan came up with for Black & White's fire starter along with Boarbeque).

Very nice-looking very professional. Especially like the gym screenshots. This looks like this is going to be a pretty good hack, I can't see really that many faults with it. The tiles are not fabby-dabby-ding-dong but of course they're sufficient. I'll have to play the 1st Beta to properly evaluate it obviously but it looks very decent indeed.

Good luck.

Thanks, and no thanks. Sticking with the Pokéballs.

I think Firelet, although I it, sounds like "Violet", and the piglet bit doesn't really seem obvious. >: On Charogpyre, it sounds like a super fire overlord from the Planet X. XD It's too complicated, to be honest. >:

Boabust sounds like a fire-type snake, and I might consider using the volcano idea and name one Volboar.

I might consider Pignite. I actually really like it. I might go with PIGNITE and VOLBOAR. It sounds nice. I'll still consider other names, but I really like those.

I forgot about Elton John then.
Thanks, Cynic. As I mentioned before, the tiles do not a little tweaking here and there, but I'm quite content with them as it is. To avoid lawsuits I'm not mentioning how close or far away I am to finishing the first beta. :3

Well if you do decide to use Pignite, you don't have to credit me or anything since I just got it from 4chan and it wasn't my own original name.

Thanks for tuning in folks, hopefully next time, we'll have even more updates!

Very interesting. I'm liking this weekly chracter info idea. Like me you're also implementing a Gym Leader rematch system, and like me the 1st gym leader can be rematched in a forest! Its amazing how many hacks have a forest early in the game... I guess it's just a mainstay now.

Look forward to next Sunday. The region looks nicely balanced out as well. Is Taupe forest covered in ash from a volcano? Or was it just a shade of brown you like the name of? I love that name as well. You have to have a place named Heliotrope _____. :cer_tongue:

Thanks, Cynic. I've always thought that not being able to rematch gym leaders in FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby and Sapphire was a sin, so it was almost a necessity for me to include that. The forest part must be a complete coincedence, actually. And no, the name Taupe is becuase of the next city, Taupe CIty. It actually's got nothing to do with the volcano, as the eruption was nearer Sootopolis than anything, so it wouldn't affect something so south of Imphan. Anyway, I have already planned most of the city/town/etc. names already, but if I somehow need to change a name for one reason or the other, I might consider Heliotrope. It's quite the mouthful, though. :D

Curt_09 May 23rd, 2010 9:37 AM

Ooh, it's like Pokemon Sunday, but in English and without the weird costumes.
A gym leader that uses the fighting type to start us off, eh? Lo me gusta. Two Tyrogues is certainly interesting, but only for the rebattling possiblities... It will be a mystery as to which evolutions he has the next time you meet!
The region looks very non-linear, which I hope means that we will revisit some places.

Collen May 23rd, 2010 9:38 AM

Perhaps you could name the prevolution Flambore (Flam[e]bore), and the the final evolution Snarog (Snar[e][h]og).

Snare = A kind trap for catching animals by locking onto their necks.

It's tusks could be used to trap a Pokemon, kinda.

Also, how does it evolve?
I'm guessing by Level Up...

Uh-huh, and three of 'em, too. Who's to say that he doesn't have another Tyrogue? Not saying he does, but...

Thanks, I took quite some time on the region map. I'm gonna make you backtrack, don't you worry. >:)

Again, I'll consider the names. Thanks for entering.

The pre-evolution evolves by reaching Level 32. So, yes, by Level Up. :P

I <3 these features. And the maps are great! (Glad some people use the normal FR/LG tiles!) And I can't wait to see how we can visit Hoenn, my fav region.

typhlosionLV80 May 23rd, 2010 10:35 AM

I am defiantly going to follow this! I love fakemon, and im going to download any beta you might put out!

Ninja Caterpie May 23rd, 2010 11:18 PM

...tile insertion? Wait, what?

Oh well. :D Fab maps...I like it!

And it looks nice. Very nice. Full evolution of the fire starter could be BOARAZE or RAZEBOAR, something to do with burning down.
