Slasher Films
For anyone who doesn't know what a slasher film is, it's a horror film about a psychopathic killer who goes after random victims with a specific object such as a knife, chainsaw, etc.
What I want to know is how many of yuo guys have ever seen one and if they have, what ones they've seen. And if you haven't, why haven't you and do you ever plan on seeing one. Well, my first one was the three parts of Friday the 13th. I had stayed home from school since I had a very bad stomach and I couldn't sleep at all, so I woke up 4 A.M to see what was one, and I had justed turned it on for the first part. It got me intrigued because not only was it a new kind of film for me, I liked old movies, and this one seemed pretty old. After watching the first part, I just had to watch the other two parts. Luckily, it was a marathon and they played all three parts. Ever since, I have seen the Halloween 1 and 2 and Nightmare on Elm Street. They all seem to have such great story lines. But the remakes seem horrible in my opinion. |
The horror genre is by far my favorite (both in film and literature).
I remember way back in the day, every night on OuterMax (not even sure if that's still a channel anymore) would play an old slasher film at midnight. I watched them every single night, and since am a Friday the 13th expert (I can recite every movie, tell you how Jason comes back to life, dies at the end, etc). I still love slashers to this day! Sleepaway Camp, Prom Night, April Fools Day, My Bloody Valentine (see the original!). I love them all. However, in the horror genre, slasher films tend to be doggerel. I don't consider most of them "cinema". Moreso, entertainment. Even Halloween (the original slasher), or Scream (which reinvented the slasher) isn't necessarily cinema. I much prefer psychological horror (SE7EN is one of the scariest movies ever made, IMO). Mothman Prophecies also scared the bejesus out of me. Videodrome is another classic one. Jaws, Eyes Without a Face, Audition, Silence of the Lambs (yes, I consider it a horror film). These are true horror cinema. Thorns, if you want a classic slasher film that I consider "cinema", check out Michael Powell's Peeping Tom. It ruined Powell's career at the time, but it's now considered to be a horror masterpiece. |
