Why do you love the music you love?

I originally meant to ask Patchisou Yutohru if I could put this thread up. It deals with the school paper I'm writing up right now. Then I realized I was running short of time. So I gambled and hopefully gambled right. Patchisou, if you must, lock this thread. I just really need a survey.

Anyway, we all have that genre of music we love, from jazz to rock, classical to pop. I don't know how many of us actually stop and ask ourselves this, but why exactly DO we like the music we listen to? And, in addition, what do we see in music that doesn't appeal to us? So I'm asking the people of PC these questions:

1)What is your favorite genre of music, and what exactly do you like that type of music?
2)What music do you not like, and why do you not like it?

NOTE: I know some people say they like more then one genre of music, but please, for this, can you really think about which you like most, and then put that one? I'm hopefully gonna use the poll in my paper

I also meant to ask why you love/hate Beiber, but there's sorta a thread on that already/

Sneeze May 25th, 2010 2:19 PM

Well, my personal favourite genre is metal but I voted rock as the line between the two is kinda blurred anyways, I've never really thought about why I like it tbh with you. I just do, lol. Just when I started building up my library and defining my tastes it would always been focused on metal and/or rock, just how it all worked out I guess.

Legobricks May 25th, 2010 3:10 PM

Well, of all things, Celtic; folk. I like how it harkens back to an older time; peaceful, melancholic, yet subtly lively, apparently a match to my personality? It's not hard on the ears... um... that's really all I have to say, sorry. Will edit if more comes to mind.

Now what I don't like would be current pop music, it's awfully repetitive and almost always about some sort of 'you x me' theme... 'love' if you will, but fickle, pointless songs seemingly made to forward monetary success for as long as the majority enjoy the theme, and given how egocentric the themes sound to me (always gratifying to hear your favourite celebrity saying "I love you", eh?) I should imagine people will continue to well past my own lifetime. I don't necessarily hate any listeners of it, only the music itself and its creator.

countryemo May 25th, 2010 3:51 PM

1. Country :D i like it b.c.. i find it with more emotion and yea yea yea... idk.

2.rap/hiphop/metal/screamo, and stuff like it< ? i dont like it b.c well it gives bad stuff? idk, i never thought of that o.o (i did tooo :P)

Esper May 25th, 2010 4:10 PM

I like some of the genres you mention in your poll, but if pressed I couldn't say any of them are my favorite. Electronic music is probably the closest single genre that covers the music I like most, or at least I'm more inclined to like any random electronic music I hear for the first time than random music from another genre.

From your list I suppose I would be stuck picking pop since it's the closest, but that would be misleading since they're really no more similar than pop and hip hop or pop and country. I do like a lot of rock music, but it's a large genre and as a whole I only like a small percentage of it so I can't pick that. :/

Anyway, I like it because it's varied in the sounds it makes. You can have repetitive, dance-y music or something more akin to classical music or jazz with movements and improvisation and, for lack of a more descriptive word, variety. You can go with lyrics just as easily as without. It's a broad genre and there really aren't many conventions that artists have to stick to.

EmeraldSerenade May 25th, 2010 4:11 PM

1)What is your favorite genre of music, and what exactly do you like that type of music?
Indie/French Pop. Its really different from most of the other crap I listen to (rock, rNb, screamo, techno, alternative). I love the mix of sounds and stuff... I honestly have no clue why I like it ._. ...Rediscover<3

2)What music do you not like, and why do you not like it?
I really don't like country... Its just... annoying. Country was never something I could just sit down and listen to..

TheUltimateSacrifice May 25th, 2010 6:37 PM

You didn't put classical or folk as an option. That is criminal.

Kid Coma May 25th, 2010 9:04 PM

1)What is your favorite genre of music, and what exactly do you like that type of music?
Rock, Noise Rock, Blues, Classical, (Heavy, Thrash, Speed, Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Alternative) Metal, Classic Punk, Grunge, New Wave are all genres I enjoy. Why? Personally I love the sound and a lot of the lyrical themes I can understand and/or relate to.
2)What music do you not like, and why do you not like it?
Modern/Teenybopper pop, R&B, Techno, Rap, Post-Grunge, "Modern Punk" (Punk is ****ing dead.), Nu Metal, Emo etc. This music is soulless, overproduced and fake. Just listening to it makes me die a little inside.

Tyrantrum May 25th, 2010 11:42 PM

1)What is your favorite genre of music, and what exactly do you like that type of music?
Any type of genres for metal. (i.e. Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, etc.) It's just more pleasing to me; I really don't know why, though. XD; I really like the breakdowns. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3LeoS8GH7E

2)What music do you not like, and why do you not like it?
Rap and Country.

Country - It just sounds so horrible. It gives me headaches.

Rap - All rap sounds nearly the same to me. Repetitive and annoying background music, beats, etc. I only listen to it in the car, because they don't have a metal station. >:[

Ho-Oh May 25th, 2010 11:48 PM

Um... rnb because it uses autotune and I love autotune. Though other genres do too... I just like rnb? XD; I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHETHER THERE'S AN "&" in the middle. :(

I don't like... idk tbh. I can't really name songs off the top of my head that I hate because eventually for nostalgic reasons I'll like them.

Also yes Bieber is property of my thread........ always.......

Rogue planet May 26th, 2010 4:46 AM

Most of the bands I enjoy are different forms of rock, the main favourites being: post-punk, post-rock, progressive rock, and "alternative" or "indie" rock. Also a lot of electronic music, such as trip-hop, electro-industrial and IDM. Although I enjoy music based on the actual sound and lyrical content rather than just having all my favourite bands categorised into one genre, so my favourite bands all actually belong to very different genres.

As for music I don't like, there's no particular genre that I dislike as I'll usually be able to find at least one artist I enjoy for every genre. Although most of what is in the top 40 (now I've checked the charts, I actually dislike everything in the top 40 apart from Muse) is something I don't enjoy. So I guess most of what's mainstream.

Rich Boy Rob May 26th, 2010 6:39 AM

Well to be frank... I don't really listen to music. The closest I come to it is if it's in the background of a game/tv, the radio's on or if someone else (ie my sister) is listening to it). Though if I did actively listen to something it'd probably be rock...

EDIT: I voted rock, just to add to the poll by the way. And if I had to say I hated one genre of music it would be Rap/Hip Hop. By a long way. Apart from anything else, it's a little too 'chavy' for my liking.

chikorita125 May 26th, 2010 9:01 AM

i like Rock, Heavy Metal because the songs have a good beat to them.

PuNkSter May 26th, 2010 12:09 PM

I like Punk Rock. I like Punk Rock for different reasons. Punk is fast, full of energy something I'd dance to. Lyrics are the main reason, Punk is never meant to be nice. This genre branches to a wide array of sub-genres, Hardcore Punk (which is even faster), Horror Punk (Misfits baby!!!), and Melodic Hardcore to name a few.

Music that I don't like is (C)Rap. Seriously why is this even a genre? I just can't get into Rap. I'd rather listen to Taylor Swift then Rap. All they talk about is Drugs and Sex... okay.

Yea, I realized, bro. I think I clicked enter by accident, and apparently, it submitted the poll with only those options. >_>

Kotowari May 26th, 2010 2:28 PM

I don't really have a favourite sound of music, but I can tell you that I like music that stirs my imagination. The majority of songs I have on my Ipod come from Soundtracks of the various movies/anime that I have seen and the game's (LoZ-Fire Emblem) I've played.
Sometimes, when I have artblock, the music helps me get ideas. And even if I don't have one, it makes it easier to drift off in my own little big universe.

But since you ask to vote for a specific genre, and Soundtracks aren't limited to just one, I'm gonna vote for Pop anyways... Because, call me a weeaboo if you want, the majority of Vocal Songs on my Ipod are JPop songs, i.e. Anime openings and endings. I pick those carefully though. Lyrics are important to me, but I need to like the sound as well...
If I really like one song, I'd search for the other songs by the artist. That is how I got to know Suara, who at this point is my favourite artist. I don't like all of her work, but I do like most of it. x)

Songs I don't like... Well, I detest Rap, HipHop... the usual things on the radio.
I want decent text and sound, and I kinda miss that in most songs I hear nowadays. : <

NikoBelic999 May 26th, 2010 4:26 PM

I only listen to Rock- not heavy metal, not screamo, like just plain rock. Maybe Nickleback, and some others. Just not Heavy Metal and Screamo- I hate those.

Missingno.7-4468 May 26th, 2010 5:27 PM

Personally, my favorite genre is Outlaw Country. It's simply the best of all kids of Country in my opinion.(Classic Country, Outlaw Country, Nashville Sound, Country Pop, Modern Country, etc...) While I do like Johnny Cash, he is far from my favorite singer, and I would much rather listen to the likes of David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Paycheck, Willie Nelson, etc...

As for stuff I don't like, I would have to say most rap and pop, and almost ALL modern country. Modern country just about makes me want to puke, with the likes of...Um...TAYLOR SWIFT, Jason Aldean, and the guy that sings "Feel That Fire"(I can't remember his name right now...)

███ May 26th, 2010 5:44 PM

i'll guess that metal is under rock music

Waki Tobaye May 26th, 2010 6:22 PM

I like alternative rock, progressive rock, electronica, emo, punk, progressive metal and alternative metal.

Why do I like it? It's pretty weird, actually.
I started listening to the tunes on TV. You know, those persons that appear on TV. On my country, there are these songs from soap operas that I really liked. Also, pop songs from "Tatiana" and some other comercial musicians.
I was a kid. I didn't know what true music was like.
Then my best friend named Angel (that was later my first girlfriend) appeared on my life and showed me a song from Panic! At The Disco and a song from Fall Out Boy named The Carpal Tunnel of Love.
I loved it. I started listening more and more, I remember listening Fall Out Boy, Panic!, Something Corporate, Simple Plan, B2K, U2 and some others.
Then I started watching Disney Channel. Here in Mexico, High School Musical was pretty high at the moment; so I liked those songs. Three friends (Alan, Adrian and Estrella) introduced me into the big world of pop. I remember liking then HSM, Vanessa Hudgens, Hillary Duff, Katy Perry and Lindsay Lohan IIRC.

Then a new chapter of my life started; I discovered what true music was. I listened some new alternative groups. Green Day, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Interpol, Sum 41 and SOAD.
I also listened some alternative and progressive metal; like Korn, Labyrinth, Evanescence, Nightwish, Satellite Tragedy, Dream Theater and my favourite group, Circus Maximus. Then I listened some of the best songs I've heard; "Arrival of Love" by Circus Maximus, for instance(My favorite).
And, in this same period, I became pretty open. I listen some songs from groups like "Pesado" or other Mexican groups (Molotov, too).
The only two "genres" I cannot stand are any genre that involves "screamo" and Reggaeton.
Hell, I cannot stand listening screamo. I get scared. Really.
And Reggaeton, if you lived in Mexico, you'd have to listen the same ****ing songs every single ****ing day. At your house, with your neighbors, at the radio, at school, at streets, with friends, AT PARTIES... And It sucks. Maybe in other countries like at the States there's no problem, but here...

EDIT: I just saw the Bieber thing.

I actually don't have anything with the Bibarel-boy. I just don't like him, nor do I hate him. He doesn't sing well; but his music is acceptable. I remember the first time I listened to him; I didn't recognize him until he sand the part with the "baby, baby, baby oh baby, baby, baby" Then I was like: "OMG, is that a cover by a girl?" But a friend told me: "No, THAT's Bieber". I was shocked. He sings bad. I sing better than him. Much better.

Well, that's it. I hope I could help you with your project. Good luck!

Ineffable~ May 26th, 2010 10:47 PM

Well I'll accept anything, although I don't like any country (nothing against the genre, just not a fan of the sound of it in general). Mostly rock, and all kinds of it. Punk, metal, screamo, folk punk (Andrew Jackson Jihad <3), indie, alternative, rock 'n' roll (although this is a bit of a silly genre I think), so yeah mostly rock . . .
I like the sound of it because you can just be completely captured by the sounds and the lyrics . . . I don't know how to describe it but those loud noises and screaming (if applicable) and symbolic lyrics (if applicable--I have meaningless lyrics too) actually help me focus on things much better. It's just such an entertaining genre. Also it's kind of fun when the sounds of the music leave you guessing about the lyrics at first. Because then when you look up the lyrics and finally find them out it makes you think "whoa I never knew they were saying that."
. . . That was probably a bad explanation, but most of my favourite artists are as such because of their lyrics (Modest Mouse, Green Day, Linkin Park, Andrew Jackson Jihad--especially Modest Mouse), and good lyrics are not necessarily confined to one genre . . . idk get off my back. >.<; I like punk rock.

Eliminator Jr. May 26th, 2010 10:52 PM

My favourite genre of music from things you mentioned above would be rock. If I'm allowed to be more specific probably indie, which covers everything from dance-y stuff like Foals to folk/pop stuff like Lisa Mitchell to post-rock like Explosions In The Sky. I don't really classify things in to genres if I can; there are certain things I like about certain artists that may not apply to others in the genre, so I couldn't really give you a broad meaning.

Apart from stuff like Lisa Mitchell, Sarah Blasko and Ladyhawke, I don't like most of what is played on mainstream radio. I particularly dislike techno music (I don't mind some electro), country music (they all sound the same and sing about the same thing in a really annoying over-American accent and they all have terrible video clips) and especially lame pop/punk bands like All American Rejects or A Day to Remember or Simple Plan or something like that.

Alkaide May 27th, 2010 4:55 AM

I vote HIP-HOP as there is a lot of hip-hop in it.

Eldrei May 28th, 2010 12:38 AM

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOCK!!! Because it makes me energized and doesn't make me sleep! It blows me up to the skyyyyy!!! xDDD

Binary May 28th, 2010 3:43 AM

I like different variations of rock like hard rock, punk-rock and alternative-rock. I like listening to music with a little hint of metal in them sometimes. I prefer rock because I'm addicted to distortion o:
Aaa...maybe not =| I just like listening to it. It makes me feel energized and I like the beats and the instruments. Whenever I listen to rock, I do my homework real fast xD And I'm like...headbanging o:
The final reason: I just like it ;D
