Family Relations?

I was thinking about what family relations we can have in B/W. All we really see in the game is someones mom and thats it. In r/s/e we saw the father which i thought was really great (and the fact he's a gym leader). So what do you want to see?

Personally i'd like to see a brother or sister, but since the character seems to be much older, perhaps a little bro/sis who runs up to you at random spots and helps you out (Like Lyra/Ethan in hg/ss). Then perhaps another dad (Mom maybe? Be a bit freaky) as a gym leader, i think putting them in the elite 4 would ruin it

Azzurra May 25th, 2010 10:19 PM

I'd love to see one of the family members are the Elite Four, or maybe even the champion? Having them as the Elite four still signifies their importance. Remember D/P/P when Flint helped you out?

LethalTexture May 26th, 2010 2:40 AM

I'd like to see a Red-esque final boss at the very end of the game, and it turns out that this character is your father who has been training away for years.

Haza May 26th, 2010 3:59 AM

Having your little sister b your helper throughout the game is a great idea, and she would often challenge you because she aspires to one day beat you in a Pokemon battle, and especially once you beat the Pokemon League...

miltankRancher May 26th, 2010 6:05 AM

^agree. but i think it should be the opposite gender. after the Pokemon league and some after-main-story-arc, she would probably be strong then she would challenge you. Maybe after defeating her, rematches to gym leaders/ a battle frontier would open up.

blue May 26th, 2010 6:31 AM

It'd be good if there was more than just one family member, and they we're in the storyline throughout the game instead of having just a Mom who sits at home through the whole game.

Kon~ May 26th, 2010 6:32 AM

I really want to see some sibling rivalry. Yeah, you got it - your rival is your older borther/sister who is always that little bit better than you and it annoys you to no end!

You have to show them up by being better of them, despite the age difference, but they would be proud of you becoming such a good trainer.

A relationship a little like the cousin rivallry of Clair and Lance. :3

I agree, and it would be even better if your brother/sister got one of the starters as well. Say like in DPPt we had Barry and Dawn who got the starters, but in b&w it could be your rival and your sibling who get the others. The older brother/sister sounds bette than the younger brother/sister imo. It'd be neat if they were say a frontier brain or the elite four champion..or maybe even a gym leader (like Misty's sisters) too.

I was going to say something like that, but I didn't want it to sound too cliché... I resented the fact that in Gen III, you were the child of a Gym Leader, because it is just that little bit too Mary-Sue for me, but it wasn't too overdone back then.

I think having a sibling Champion would be pushing the marker. :3

hmm, then sibling who works for the major pokemon company in the game? Or maybe a sibling who's a judge in pkmn contest? Other than sibling, other family members could be used too. Going up against grandpa or grandma in the elite four anyone? :D

I like the sibling working for a pkmn company one. It could really play into the game. Say your older brother or sister gets kidnapped while on an important assignment by the new bad guys and without hearing from them for awhile sooner or later you decide to go searching for them. This could be when you receive your pkmn, but of course to get your sibling back you need to defeat the bad guys, which means raising your pkmn (going to gyms) on the way. Then from there the main storyline could unfold.

Bloothump May 26th, 2010 1:29 PM

I kind of had an idea for a Ruby hack where one "Team" is legitimately bad and then the other actually has innocent means but kind of does more harm than good. And in the team that has good means your sister is actually an admin. I could go into details, but I won't.

Oh, I like that! The major reason for starting the journey would be that you want to find your sibling, and as it progresses, you learn details of their kidnapping, prompting you to go after the evil team in order to save them?

That would make me play the game non-stop! "I must save my sibling!"

This would Be over kill. Just over kill. A Gym leader is enough.

Yep yep, something like that. It would be a nice breakaway from the traditional 'beat gyms, beat evil team, catch legendary'.

Emlam May 26th, 2010 2:44 PM

Family? Two words: Evil twin. :P

Guy May 26th, 2010 2:50 PM

On the topic of siblings, I would prefer them to be younger, simply so they can be another Barry-like character who's always saying their going to be the best trainer, yet they never seem to win against you. Plus, they'd be the comedic character in the game like Barry was portrayed to be - and impatient too.

Yeah, I like Barry, so why not have someone similar, right?

Going with this idea though, because the protagonist is now older, I think it could work well with your younger sibling getting to choose one of the region's starters.

As for the parents, I would love to have both a mom and dad please. The dad could be a Gym Leader like the father in RSE was; I thought that was a pretty cool twist compared to not having a dad at all. As for the mom, I'd like for her to be the bank again. I found this so useful in HG/SS, saving a lot of money and getting some when I needed it. However, I'd also like the mom to interact with the player as well. DPPt did this a bit with Johanna, but not enough I think. So, if anything keeping the parents appearing every now and then (along with your sibling rival) would be a great addition to the story.

May I add to this, but I'd like another rival as well, one who's quite tough against you with a great line-up of Pokémon, strategy, and is about the same age as you. This character however will not be part of your family, but instead hopefully take part of the plot in the game instead.

I agree with the younger sibling. I've always been a fan of them young ones since Luigi.
You guys pretty much mentioned what I wanted. It'd be cool to have a mom, dad and little bro/sis in the game. It wouldn't hurt for them to get in the storyline either, imo.

My only problem with a younger sibling trailing you around, or a mother, would be that it would really kill the whole "adventure/journey" aspect of things. I mean, what's the point in leaving the house, being independent, and starting your own life as a pokemon trainer if you're constantly having to take care of your little brother, or you mom stops by to do your laundry every other town?

I think this would be fun if there was a sort of "half-way point" during the game, at which point your younger sibling, having seen your acheivements, was encouraged to start their own journey, and turn up at some cities showing off what they've learned along the way (and maybe give you a chance to kick their butt in a battle!).

It would certainly make a change from your neighbourhood friend showing up to... do the same thing... yeah. Maybe not. :D

linkinpark187 May 27th, 2010 5:59 AM

There's the Male/Female characters, right? What I could see, being a possibility, is that the hero/heroine is the twin to the other. This could be good, because then it could set the stage for your brother/sister being your rival for a majority of the game. I think it could make it interesting, but maybe that's just me. I mean, it goes along with other ideas here, but it doesn't. I don't think.

shengar May 27th, 2010 7:50 AM

our sibling as a gym leader or even elite four.

Hmm, like the ideas. though if you had a rival who was as tough, or even tougher, than you then what would that leave the other protagonist who you're not playing as to be? I think I'm more for making say the protagonists a lot tougher this time around, and yeah maybe a weaker sibling who tries to outdo you in battles, etc. Having two rivals, and a sibling who tries to be a rival, would bring the total rivals number to 3..too much?

That would be pretty fan-freaking-tastic. Pokemon has a tendency for having the main character reform their rival (and the whole region...) anyway. Part of the plot could be chasing after a prodigal-like son lol. Or not. But it's fun to speculate. :) It would be nice to see some more family interaction, wot? Even of the evil sort..

What i'd want to see is the character's mom be the champion and the dad the leader of the evil team

I'm afraid, my friend, that this particular scenario would be what we like to call 'cliché'.

I don't think it would be suitable as a workable plot device. :/
