HM's really annoy me?

it bothers me that two of the six pokemon i have with me must be hm slaves (three if i don't already have a flying pokemon to teach fly to). does anyone else feel this way? i mean i see you guys's teams but it doesnt look like you all use hm slaves? do you just teach the hm's to which ever pokemon you have that can learn them? i really hesitate to do that because i hate deleting useful moves for stupid hm's.

Ger Japa May 29th, 2010 7:18 AM

YES that's right, except for Fly and Surf, all other HMs are really annoying me...

I teach only Fly and Surf to my official team, the other rest, i teach to an alternative pokemon or maybe 2, and for sure i have to bring that pokemon all the way through, that's why im always moving pokemons around and around in a round in the PC.

i wish HMs didnt exist!!!

Toa Hyro May 29th, 2010 8:17 AM

Hms totally annoy me in how at least two or three have to have weak hm moves when I can use really awesome battle moves.

UraharaSteph May 29th, 2010 8:28 AM

My official team knows HMs, I wouldn't drop any of my pokemon for a HM slave, but that just means I miss out on some really useful moves. I'm so glad Flash is no longer a HM though, that had to be the most annoying one of them all, but what did they go and do? Replace it with Defog.

Like Defog is any better than Flash.

So yeah it's really annoying. I don't see the point in them. If HMs were like tools you could use instead, then that would be way more useful, but I suppose it adds to the fact that you need pokemon to help you get around in real life situations, you're probably not going to have a chain-saw ready to cut down a tree or something.

Fly and surf are the only ones I appreciate I guess.

.Kaiser May 29th, 2010 10:12 AM

Surf, Waterfall and Fly are the only ones I like.
All others I HATE.

HugSomebody May 29th, 2010 10:49 AM

I usually have four Pokemon on my team and then room for two HM slaves, but if I have a six Pokemon team I spread the HM's around each of them. This bothers me, but it can't be helped. ^^

What I really don't like about HM's is how illogical they are. Why should I teach a Pokemon that I found IN WATER how to surf? Or why would I teach my FLYING type Pokemon to fly? I don't really understand the point of Defog either.

exactly. i think that flying pokemon should all just be able to fly by default, rock should be able to rock climb, fighting should be able to rock smash & strength, etc. and defog is the dumbest thing ever.

I always have a full team, and I tend to spread HM's out evenly. And ever since DPPt made remembering moves easier, now I can go back and delete HM's such as cut once I find them useless.

Also, I have a main team that I always transfer to my latest game once I beat it. So, in DPPt, I will go through the game using pokemon, and distributting the HMs evenly, deleting as necessary, and then when I beat the elite four, I switch over to my main team.

But I do agree that water pokemon, BY DEFINITION, should be able to swim. -__- Same with Flying types, at least.

Ronin May 29th, 2010 4:37 PM

I always thought that instead of needing to teach your Pokemon an HM, as soon as you have it all pokemon that can learn it are able to use out of battle (regardless if it knows it for in battle). So as soon as you have met the requirements for HM Fly and got the HM all flying pokemon you have can now fly you places, if you want to teach it to a pokemon for in battle you still can. I also don't like that you have to go to a move deleter to get rid of them.

This I feel would keep the in game reason for them (they are needed for the story imo) and get rid of needing either very annoying HM slaves or have your pokemon know rubbish moves you'll never really use in battle.

SparklingMistral May 29th, 2010 4:56 PM

I think it's stupid to have a Fly or Surf HM. Flying types should be able to Fly by default and Water types should be able to Surf by default.

As they are need for in game purposes though, I just get a HM slave that can learn most of them and use it as needed.

dozo May 29th, 2010 5:11 PM

Personally I think it would be easier if HMs were like bloody abilities or something. Like catch a pokemon and you can use it for this. Rather than having to clog up the move lots and me having to use my Gyarados as an HM mule. BLARGG

Alkaide May 30th, 2010 1:55 AM

Ya, it's too annoying like that way.

The thing that I do is get a useless pokemon who can learn the silly HM and put it in PC, and take it out whenever needed.

LethalTexture May 30th, 2010 2:12 AM

I just fit them around the Pokémon I catch in-game, and if the pokémon I have can't learn them, then I have one in the box to withdraw when needed.

ladyfiaragc May 31st, 2010 3:38 PM

I agree. HM's are really annoying. My evolved Graveller has become completely useless because it has to have rock smash, strength, and rock climb *sighs*

I too veto HM's.

Pearlone May 31st, 2010 7:03 PM

I believe that there should be 5-6 moves a Pokemon could learn. I mean 4 is just a small number coming in with the new generations, and the new attacks and whatnot, I believe the number of attacks a pokemon can learn should be expanded.

ladyfiaragc June 1st, 2010 7:10 AM

I second that notion. Or maybe like, each pokemon could have separate move slots for HMs? Or, if you had a pokemon with you who was able to use it, you'd just have to pick up the move, rather than train it to a pokemon and if you had a pokemon in your party that is able to use the move (flying pokemon for defog/fly, water pokemon for surf, or rock/fighting pokemon for rock smash/rock climb/strength) that you would just be able to use said move.

yeah i agree with that. makes much more sense.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ June 2nd, 2010 7:04 AM

I hate HM's. In Platinum, I have to have my HM's spread out over my team (I'll only use an HM slave for the Waterfall move). My Empoleon was saddled with Rock Climb and my Crobat with Defog forever, and it wasn't until I completed the entire game that I could finally get rid of most of them, keeping only Surf and Fly on my team.

Yes, separate move slots for HM's would be boss. Or, just make them into better attacks.

Pokémon Ranger ✩ Moriarty June 2nd, 2010 7:28 AM

I use my Pokémon team for HMs until the Pokémon League, whereupon I Fly to the Move Deleter and have him delete all of the unecessary ones, then Fly to the Move Tutor in Pastoria and regear my team. I'm having to do the same n HG, and it's doing my face in. >:[

ltsang June 2nd, 2010 7:43 AM

hehe yea. I feel the same way. I have to have two pokemon with hm's because some pokemon can't learn the all the hm's. I was like wtf.

Kindred Sworn June 2nd, 2010 8:26 AM

I usually use one or two HM slaves that end up being either an oddish or gyarados that I end up naming "dumb%$!" or "A retard" or something of the like for some laughs when they use them. I only teach fly and surf HMs to any of my main Pokemon team.

Electrovenom June 2nd, 2010 2:51 PM

Surf and Waterfall are good, Fly is ok-ish and Strength can be used over Return if I don't have Return on me.

Some are shocking though. Defog? Cut? Come on...

It makes me glad I can use a Bibarel for 6 HM's. Good ol' Bibarel.

Flare Riqueza June 2nd, 2010 3:09 PM

Uhhh...yeah. They annoy use all. Most of these abilities seem obvious. Why not use Iron Tail and smash open the boulders? Then buy a yacht.

Sorted. Now you can travel the world with Electivire.

They had to do something to make things complicated, didn't they?

Quit complaining.

EDIT:

My solution is: impersonate a Pokemon Ranger.

Whenever you need to use a HM, a pokemon that can learn it will be wild closeby, right? All I do is catch 'em when I need 'em

Agreed. I love Bibarel only for that reason.

The only problem I have with HMs is when I get halfway through a long cave and realize I need one I don't have to keep going. That's nothing an Escape Rope can't cure, though.

empty streets June 3rd, 2010 4:03 AM

I hate Defog. And Rock Smash >_>
Annnd... Well, it's easier to say what HMs I don't hate. Surf and Fly.

Flare Riqueza June 3rd, 2010 4:05 AM

Rock Smash, Cut = useable if you have Scizor.

Technician turns Rock Smash into a power 80 fighting move with a chance of defense drop.
Cut will become power 100 or 110, I think (not sure what Cut is normally)
