Pokémon: Ultimate Quest

Pokémon: Ultimate Quest!

Hi, nice to meet you all!
Welcome to my hack, Pokémon: Ultimate Quest.

My hack, as the title suggests, is to not only create the ultimate Pokémon quests, but to have a Pokémon game filled with side quests and features that were lacking in the original games.

This hack will be set seven years after Fire Red/Leaf Green and four years afrer Heart Gold/ Soul Silver.

It will be set in Johto and Kanto (I had other regions planned, but until Advance Map is updated only those two are options at the moment).

I will go into much more detail of these features in the following sections.

Story
Spoiler:
Pokémon: Ultimate Quest's main story begins with your mother being kidnapped and leaving you a Pokémon. Your first journey is to find your mother and bring her to safety. She was kidnapped because she is a Pokémon Researcher who invented a device which makes Pokémon instantly like their owners.

She was kidnapped by a returning Team Rocket, who is now lead by Giovanni's son, Silver, and Silver's son.

After an epic story based on bringing back your mother there will be more big storylines afterwards, with dozens of side quests offering reward items, Pokémon, stores, money, etc.

Features
Spoiler:
Trainer Re-battle
Battle any trainer as many times as you want by going to a town then returning.

Dynamic Wild Pokémon Scaling
Wild Pokémon (apart from once only events) will always be three levels lower than your weakest Pokémon, so level is no longer dependant on where you are. This gives you many more options for training, and allows you to train almost any Pokémon from the level you desire, and not forced to raise it from when the game thinks you should.

Dynamic Leader Trainers
Gym Leaders will now always be five levels higher than your strongest Pokémon, while the Elite Four will always be seven levels stronger (unless you have a Pokémon that is level ninety three or more, in which case they are level a hundred).

There will be some new gyms called Training Gyms, which will offer no badges, but will reward you with items and TMs. Their Pokémon will always be three levels higher than your strongest.

Unique Boss Pokémon
There will be a rather large number of boss Pokémon that you cannot obtain, but are bosses. They are very strong for their level, and will need a full team of Pokémon to be able to beat. Beating them offers great rewards the first time you beat them. Not all boss battles will be re-fightable.

Poképager
Receive information from people who have your Poképager number. Things like plot advancements or information of roaming or swarming Pokémon.

Side Quests
There will be many side quests which you will start by talking to someone who gives you one (with the option to decline). These can range from doing a little mini-game to taking on a gang of Rockets, all for a reward of course.

New Towns
All of Kanto and Johto will be available, and are both connected. As such, you will find some Johto Pokémon in Kanto and some Kanto Pokémon in Johto. This is because seven years have passed since Fire Red and Leaf Green, and the only thing separating the two was a mountain, which has now been built through.

There will also be new towns in both regions that weren't in the games, but were in the anime.

Old towns and areas will be updated to be more populated and to look better in general.

All Pokémon catchable
All Pokémon will be catchable. Most in the wild, some via quests. All legendaries and starters will have their own unique quest. Some none-starters/legendaries will also have their own quest.

Unique Bookshelves, photos, TV shows
All of the above will be unique for each one. So every bookshelf for example with have a unique book, which are well researched (and made up, for events since the original games) and according to my feedback, very interesting.

Speaking Hero
The main character (who will be a new character, and neither Red nor Leaf, as they are NPCs now. This hero does not need special shoes to run, so can run from the start.

[B]Pokémon And Move Rebalance[B]
Pokémon now have a tier system, where in the end (last evolution) all Pokémon apart from ubers and legendaries have much more similar stats, so all Pokémon are viable choices. Some moves have been moved to a more appropriate type (Mega Punch = Fighting for example), some have had their damage altered (useless ones made useful) and many have had their PP reduced (some had like 35 which was way too much, eg Screech).

Some Pokémon also have altered types and abilities. For example Charizard is now a Fire Dragon with levitate as it's abilitie. Gyarados is now Water Dragon. Aerodactyl is now a Rock Dragon. Ratatta is now Normal/Dark. There may be more in the future, but only if they are appropriate.

And
many more that will be announced at a later date.

Screenshots
I know you all love screenshots, so here are some taken place during the start of the game. Mostly to show some of the new features mentioned above.

Spoiler:
Hack_Mew - You amazing hacker, for several of your tools (the a-series) Not to mention XSE
Lu-Ho - Of course, for the fantastic Advance Map
JPAN - For your amazing hacked engine, which has made some of my features possible
silver134 - For your great tool, YAPE
The people who have helped me occasionally on the script help thread

If I left anyone out, let me know! The only work that isn't mine are the tools that I used.

I am recruiting for this, and I really need:

A good Music Editor/Inserter
Overworld Spriters/Inserter
Tileset Inserters (I can map, but can't insert new tilesets)
Beta Testers
Possibly more.

Thank you all for taking the time to look at my thread, I hope you like what you see :)

Next Beta
Now. Next one? When I decide it's nearly ready.

Beta Notes
Read these notes before testing this beta.

- Talk to everyone, and read every signpost.
- There are some missing scripts which I am aware of (but shouldn't crash the game). Tell me about them anyway, to see how good of a beta tester you are.
- Save often. As this is a beta this doesn't need an explanation.
- The intro is exactly the same (Intro text + Oak's speech). This part is far from the top of my priority list.
- Upstairs of the Pokémon Center in Sable city is a training gym. It will be quite difficult, as gyms are now optional parts of the game for those seeking a challenge.
- Some places have no people in them (Cave and house on Route 1). These have a purpose but not until later in the game (as such, are not part of the beta)
- Leave all feedback in this thread. Be honest about what you think is good and bad about it.
- There are some areas blocked by an invisible wall. This is because they are not part of the beta.
- You can get to Vermilion, but you can't do anything there. This is just to show the new map. Same with Stone Town.

http://rapidshare.com/files/396970019/Ultimate_Quest.aps.html
It is an aps file, and requires HackMew's A-Patch tool. Get that here: http://174.133.255.180/showthread.php?t=85025

I have also attached an ips file, for those who prefer to use an ips patcher.

That is all for now.

Post away.

Co500 June 4th, 2010 3:16 AM

this looks really great although your routes could do with improving maybe less mountains

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 3:20 AM

Thanks! Unfortunately most of what I've done is gameplay related, so the pictures really don't do the hack justice.

What do you mean by less mountains? Only one of the routes I posted has mountains, and it is that tiny one on Route 1 XD

~SF3~ June 4th, 2010 3:21 AM

Your hack is looking really good, and i agree with co 500, there could be less mountains in the maps. but you have a really good idea. What i meant by less mountains was like, there just seem to be a lot of "Rocks" and Hills and such in your maps. And you said it was based in Kanto and Johto Right?

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 3:28 AM

Let me know which maps you think are too rocky (apart from Stone Town, that is deliberately filled with rocks), and I'll see what I can do :)

Yeah it is based in Kanto and Johto.

TheDonMaister June 4th, 2010 4:04 AM

I like the fact that the routes are longer; some of the routes in Kanto are far too short!

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 4:09 AM

I agree. Routes were way too short in Kanto, and Johto in fact. All routes will be altered to be longer and/or completely revamped. Many of the original routes were really bland, especially with all the square patches of grass and little things like that.

Original post updated, with credits and a couple of new features.

Roxasabridged June 4th, 2010 4:38 AM

Wow, I'll be impressed if you can implement that dynamic level stuff. I didn't know you could do that...

But there seems to be a problem with Silver. If this is set 4 years after Johto's saga, then why would Silver have a son if he's about 14 years old and lead Team Rocket if he hates them?

Also, would the starter be a choice of 3 or a single starter?

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 4:41 AM

The dynamic level stuff has already been implemented Roxas. And it is possible thanks to JPAN.

It's a good job I've not implemented Silver yet then :p

So Silver hates Team Rocket? Is it explained why?

There is a single starter, Pikachu. You get to start catching Pokémon early on though, and there are side-quests that give the other Kanto starters quite early. (They have to be earned though, so you don't just get given them).

If anyone wants to know how I made any of these features, then feel free to ask, I'd be glad to share. Feel free to use them in your hacks too.

Roxasabridged June 4th, 2010 8:46 AM

Quote:

I can't remember the exact reason. It involves hating Giovanni, I think, and seeing TR as weak losers.

Curse my inability to dump starters...

Awesome. So no Johto starters?

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 8:51 AM

There will be Johto starters. You won't get them until later on though (you get sent to Johto some time about a quarter of the way into the main storyline (Not post-Pokémon league. The Pokémon league will require all 16 badges).

There's nothing stopping you changing the starter Pokémon yourself :P Pikachu is better now though, because of the rebalance.

siper x June 4th, 2010 9:10 AM

this looks very good. can't wait to play the beta!

psychicboy June 4th, 2010 9:15 AM

Hey. If you ever need help with a scripting problem, I can be sure to help you if you ask. Just lending out my services to a project I'll be keeping my eye on.

siper x June 4th, 2010 9:22 AM

just noticed something, on your mountain/hill(s), you have 1 to many stairs going up. you put 1 where there is usually flat groung on the top of the mountain/hill.

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 9:39 AM

Thanks siper and psychic boy :)

I'll bare that in mind psychic, although I'm good as a scripter but it's nice to know where I can go for help.

Siper, I'm not sure what you mean with the stairs, but I'll have a look at some of Nintendo's stairs and see if there's a difference (Y)

Mana June 4th, 2010 10:18 AM

The dynamic levelling thing seems interesting but doesn't it cause a problem because the pokemon won't evolve even if they are level 50 etc? Also if you are carrying around a weak pokemon you are training all the pokemon are weaker - therefore you could just carry around a lv 5 pokemon so that you don't have any tough encounters.

siper x June 4th, 2010 10:51 AM

what i mean is this is what you have

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 12:18 PM

Haha oh yeah, thanks siper I'll look into that.

The Pokémon evolve fine, I tested it with a full team so there's no problem there (Y)

The idea behind the dynamic isn't for a challenge, it's so people aren't tied down to where they form their team or what they train on by the area and Pokémon species. So you can train your main Pokémon to say level 20, so then you can go back to route 1, catch a level 17 Pokémon. It encourages building a dynamic team rather than tanking with the starter :p

I could alter it to make it based on an average, or make it your strongest minues a few levels. I guess I could do a poll?

I'd like some comments on it from a few people before doing a poll though.

Thanks for the constructive guys :D

no problem. :)

i'd say average level, so it is also easier to trai your stronger pokemon in the party (also so then peopl with HM slaves don't fight level 2s and 3s all the time.)

Nikolai Fox June 4th, 2010 2:19 PM

Disrupter, tjwilliams, you can be closed beta testers. I want one more, any others afterwards will have to wait until new open betas. (I need closed betas so I don't release buggy betas in open beta).

siper x June 5th, 2010 6:53 AM

i can beta test. i like this hack, and helped find tile errors, and i might find more when actually playing the game.

Nikolai Fox June 5th, 2010 7:27 AM

You're hired Siper.

I'm no longer recruiting closed-beta testers. I have three now and the rest of the bugs can be found in open-beta (which isn't far off now anyway).

Hermione Granger June 5th, 2010 7:37 AM

for the levels of the leaders and wild is interesting. Out of curiosity, how long is the first beta gonna be?

Nikolai Fox June 5th, 2010 7:47 AM

How long it is is debatable. It depends how long it takes you to finish the side-quests (one can take a long time, and is a puzzly one. Yes, puzzly :p), and it depends whether or not you decide to train to beat the training gym leader. You will want at least a team of four, second evolution + Pokémon with a type advantage. It's going to seem really hard in the beta, and I'll explain why at the end of this post.

It also depends on whether or not you interact with everything. All books, etc.

Now, here is the the deal with gym leaders and the elite four. They are a lot more difficult, and will be very hard around the start of the game, even though you can get to some early on. This is because they are there optionally, and for people who want a really good challenge, with good rewards.

They are optional because the game is a lot less focused on gym leaders and the elite four, as they are now basically one big side-quest, as none are required to advance the plot.

The elite four will require all 16 badges from Johto and Kanto.

tjwilliams24 June 5th, 2010 8:52 AM

Thank you for letting me beta test! Now, I'm going to give a very detailed critique.

1. I love the storyline. The main thing I really like about it is how your mother gets kidnapped. It really strays away from the usual "bad team captures legendary, please stop them." sort of idea.

2. I really like your trainer re-battle idea. Especially how you can re-battle them as much as you want. Re-battling trainers is much better then just battling wild pokemon.

3. Your dynamic ideas are just great. The dynamic gym battle idea really makes sure fighting a gym leader will always be a challenge, and it makes it so a player won't just raise there pokemon 10 levels higher then the gym leaders and win right away.

4. I love side-quests and I feel your going to execute these side quests very nicely. Side-quests really make the game more enjoyable and the playing time longer.

5. I really like how your setting up the regions. Especially how Kanto pokemon will be in Johto, and vise versa. And I'm also a huge fan of populating towns more and putting in anime towns/cities that weren't in the games.

6. I absolutely love the idea of unique photos/televisions/bookshelves. Their very mysterious and I only have one question. Will they be placed around the region randomly?

7. I like how you set up the main character. I like how he is a new character and can do things on his own, like running without running shoes.

This hack has great potential. I believe your going to be a great hacker. Can't wait to test it out! Good luck!

Nikolai Fox June 5th, 2010 9:02 AM

@ tjwilliams

Thanks for the good feedback, you can criticize too you know it can't be ALL good :p

Re-battling trainers will only be slightly faster than training on wild Pokémon in vanilla anyway, as I have lowered Pokémon base XP to make up for the size of the game, and just as general balance.

The side-quests are a nice distraction with good rewards, and can reveal some interesting story-lines. Some will be available once you can get to the quest giver, and some will unlock after getting so far into the main plot (EG through a pager message).

Bookshelves and pictures definitely won't be random around the world. I haven't decided on teles yet, but for now they are the same as bookshelves and pictures.

Yeah. Running Shoes is just one of those things that Nintendo did to make every new game as the same as possible as the last ¬¬

tjwilliams24 June 5th, 2010 9:16 AM

That's the thing though, I don't have much to criticize! The only thing I could suggest would be to turn around the pikachu sprite in the professors lab and put a few less stones in Stone Town. They just seem to overtake the town =]

But, besides that, the screenshots do really look good. The side quest looks like it was incorporated very well, and I love that you can add charmander to your team! Also, the book script is very nice. Oh, and about the re-battling trainers, I just thing re-battling trainers is more exciting then battling wild pokemon. On a side-note, what's that nidoqueen doing in that screenshot? Looks interesting!

Nikolai Fox June 5th, 2010 9:23 AM

Pikachu walks around on the table, he just happened to be looking up at the time that picture was taken :p

You're not the first to say that about Stone Town. I'll see how people feel after the first beta.

Nidoqueen? Maybe you mean Lapras in the lake? :p

tjwilliams24 June 5th, 2010 9:31 AM

Oh, alright I understand about the pikachu walking on the table. And yes, I mean the lapras, it just sort of looked like a nidoqueen from the top of its head. Just wondering, put once your able to surf, would you be able to get the lapras?

giradialkia June 5th, 2010 9:33 AM

FYI, Silver hates Team Rocket because Giovanni, his father, abandoned him because he wanted to train to regain his leadership of Team Rocket. (in HGSS, the Celebi event takes you back in time to the route beside Viridian, you see Silver and Giovanni arguing, and Giovanni runs off towards Johto). So that's why Silver hates them- also, he says it in Azalea Town after beating him, but claims it is because they're weak.
Anyway, I actually really like the look of this. The features are great- I especially like the idea of dynamic battles, it's much more realistic (I mean, obviously there'll be Pokemon of different strengths in an area, rather than just Pokemon all around the same level). I also like that it includes Kanto and Johto, but isn't a GSC remake. Kanto and Johto are great regions, but they could use a new story

Nikolai Fox June 5th, 2010 9:33 AM

Yeah. That's pretty much why it's there :p

I've not decided yet how it got there story-wise though.

bobman1234 June 5th, 2010 9:42 AM

Wow! really nice hack! You shouldn't make it so all wild pokemon are 3 levels lower than your lowest level pokemon. Hm slaves.

seal June 5th, 2010 1:24 PM

This does look like an amazing hack. I'll be keeping an eye on this hack. Dynamic battling looks like a great feature.

hackerofdarkness June 5th, 2010 1:40 PM

Nice hack though just wondering is it going to have new tiles rember just wondering.

Nikolai Fox June 6th, 2010 12:37 AM

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Bobman, I may do a poll but what would you suggest to be more suitable?

Hackofdarkness, there are no new tiles as of yet, and I won't be prioritising them for quite a while. I can't insert tiles myself, and I won't need to until I start doing Johto (which will be about a third into the game).

Disrupter, in answer to your PM. You do start in Pallet, which now has new residents. But the story doesn't send you to towns in the same order, and it's a lot more slack with restrictions. So you will usually unlock around 3 towns at a time, rather than 1 at a time, but it will be made clear where you need to go next. I may even make a "Journal" item, which when used tells you where you last got told to go.

So far the order is Pallet > Viridian > Vermilion + Sable + Stone Town + Cerulean.

Then it will probably be Mt.Moon (which will be different like everywhere else), Pewter, Viridian Forest (which willl have a lot more of a story behind it.

Disrupter June 6th, 2010 9:34 AM

Alright fox, when will you have the beta ready for me to test?

tjwilliams24 June 6th, 2010 9:47 AM

Disrupter, I am as well beta testing for Nikolai, and I'm not sure what he specifically means, but on the first page, he said he has a deadline of next friday for the beta.

Nikolai Fox June 6th, 2010 10:51 AM

Friday is open beta. Your betas will be before then, to make sure it is ready for public release.

DragoonSky June 6th, 2010 11:34 AM

awsome hack man, this is good and i cant wait for see a beta :D

Curt_09 June 6th, 2010 12:53 PM

Wow, some of the features here are quite impressive. There appear to be a lot of changes, and I look forward to the Beta to see them in action. I like the fact that you will be changing TMs, and changing some Pokemon's type is an interesting feature as well. Rattata gets raped by Mega Punch now lol.

will the beta have the changes on the maps i pointed out, or do we just ignore that part?

Wesley FG June 6th, 2010 1:55 PM

I do not know if you like to change the graphs of the game but really I find that they are a little better with others tiles, spriters…, but its scrippting is good and its mapeado is pleasant alone must work a little in the details more

Nikolai Fox June 7th, 2010 4:21 AM

Thanks dragoon and curt.

siper: The stairs have been fixed, the trees may not make the next beta, but they are barely noticeable.

wesley: Eventually I will be using some new tiles, but is far from the priority at this stage. I prioritise functionality over making things look pretty at this stage.

Most of the tile work will be in Johto though, to make it different to Kanto :)

Nikolai Fox June 8th, 2010 5:02 AM

Really need those job roles taken up guys, especially now!

The army are dragging me off to Newcastle at the end of this month for a week, and they will likely do the same more in the future.

So here's my current plan:
Release beta by this Friday.

Continue after the 28th.

But it would be nice if the space between the two was filled with progress being made in areas besides scripting.

So please send in those job requests!

Thank you.

siper x June 8th, 2010 5:05 PM

since the public beta comes out on friday, and it is tuesday, when will we get the beta testing rom? depending on how long it is depends on how much of a thorough test we can get, in case of errors.

Nikolai Fox June 9th, 2010 12:02 AM

There has been a change of plan.

Due to a sudden call from the army dragging me off to Newcastle soon, there will be no open beta on Friday, and I will instead be releasing what I planned to have as a closed beta today.

It should be a little more buggy than planned, but after testing I haven't found any myself.

After it's uploaded, enjoy, and for the love of god, read the beta notes that come with it!

Thanks.

Good game

Lord Varion June 9th, 2010 2:12 AM

The screens of urs look good
I played the alpha you sent me on msn
looks good ;) well done!!

Nikolai Fox June 9th, 2010 2:37 AM

Thanks samface. I'm pretty sure I've updated it quite a lot since the alpha I sent you, so check out the beta (Y)

Nikolai Fox June 9th, 2010 10:57 AM

So has anyone tested this yet?

tjwilliams24 June 9th, 2010 11:23 AM

Could you send me the beta to test Nikolai?

I found a minor bug in the IPS version:

Nikolai Fox June 9th, 2010 12:35 PM

Oh. That's not a bug, that's an unchanged tile. If you see that again ignore it, I know what it is (Y)

found an error. at viridian city, when you enter the dock, you are able to enter the boat, S.S. Anne.

Disrupter June 9th, 2010 6:44 PM

I think you should get some new tiles to make the hack pro and have my full team are the level 1 dodu supposed to do there?

Nikolai Fox June 9th, 2010 10:57 PM

Thanks Siper. The boat is still there as I just haven't gotten to that stage in the hack yet. I plan to make the SS.Anne (or the SS.Whatever) one way to travel to Johto. So it will still be there but you will need some kind of pass which you will receive about a third the way into the story.

Also a note about the beta: There is some story in Viridian which will direct you towards Vermilion, it just isn't there yet.

Disrupter: The Doduo depends. If you have a Pokémon level 3 or lower, then all wild Pokémon will be level 1. I may make the level depend on some kind of average rather than your weakest Pokémon though.

And I don't really have any skills besides scripting and mapping, and I've not built a team yet :/

Edit: You guys got two of the starters yet (No Squirtle yet), and how did you think the side-quests to get them?

And there's another "bug" which I'm aware of. If you get given a Pokémon and you have no room for it, it won't tell you, and it will just be sent straight to PC. It requires a surprising amount of scripting to have it tell you this, and it just wastes valuable ROM space for other things. Anyone who plays any hack ever should know that they get sent to the PC anyway ;)

tennisrocks38 June 10th, 2010 2:10 PM

Fox-

FYI your hack freezes when you try to look at the town map on the wall of the training gym pokemon center. idk if its just the one in sable, but you might want to take a look at it.

mehappy June 10th, 2010 5:50 PM

i noticed another bug!
i just started the game and was going through route 1 and messing around and battles the first girl that was "required" (no escaping the battle), she was facing a ledge and you had to go in front of her.
I lost (i know, its bad when you lose on route 1), and when i whited out and went to the pokecenter, i was "in" a gym or something, but in the black area outside the walls, and couldnt move.
sorry for no screenshots:(

Nikolai Fox June 10th, 2010 10:16 PM

I know what that is mehappy. I just haven't set a healing place before a Pokémon Center, so you can't die before going to the first Pokémon Center first yet :/

Equip Pikachu with a berry (there's one inside the cave), and save before fighting it. I'm planning to make her easier to beat.

barak302 June 11th, 2010 5:38 AM

i really liked the game
hope you will do it to the end.
somehow i didn't really liked the 3 lv under my pokemon because it takes years to train him.

and a bug i have found:my pikachu died from poisening on palet town on my way to a place i can heal there(i never found one).and the screen went black after it talled me that i'm out of pokemon and when it went on again(half a sec)i found myself stuck in the northwest point of a poka center(i didn't get to see a real one-only after it when i started a new game)and i couldent walk anywhere-just stuck.

but i really liked the side quest for bulbasur as i found it hard to find the boy behind a roof

thats the same problem i had and he said he knows about it!

Nikolai Fox June 11th, 2010 9:08 AM

Right guys, an explanation of the dying glitch:

In all Pokémon Centers you have to run a script when you use it, to tell the game to set that as the revive point. It happens before you use one because I neglected to add one at the start of the game before the first Pokémon Center. I somewhat regret putting it in for the beta :/

Tennisrocks: That is because Sable is a new area, and I haven't made it a part of the town map (all new areas will have this bug until I figure out why this happens)

Glad you liked the Bulba side-quest. Did you notice the additional reward?

Any more feedback on more bugs as well as overall feedback on enjoyment?

Thanks :)

I'm not sure if you did this on purpose, but when you battle one trainer, it's a double battle, and somehow you get two pikachus, even though you only have one. I'd take a picture but it got overwritten.

Here's another thing. It's really minor though. You can stand on this box, but you shouldn't be able to.

Roxasabridged June 12th, 2010 11:33 AM

The beta looks goo so far. It may be a good idea to have a healing point in Pallet town though. My Pikachu ran out of thundershocks and nearly died.

Although, I managed to catch a Pidgey in one go somehow, so I managed to avoid screwing myself over too badly.

AngelOfPokemon June 12th, 2010 12:16 PM

A wrong description Double Team: Slacks Off and restores half of it's HP instead of Increases user's Evasiveness by one stage.
I can't post pictures yet.
Aswell as an invisible wall in Viridian City i think it's the path to Elite 4,i think you made it so you cannot have acces until you have all the badges but putting a guard it will give a more realistic impression
When you name your Charmender first time it looks like an egg.

Nikolai Fox June 13th, 2010 1:18 AM

Thanks for the feedback guys.

tjwilliams: I forgot to warn about that. If you only have one Pokémon with you then it gets duplicated for double battles (and goes away afterwards). I'm gonna see how that is handled in vanilla fire red.

Didn't notice the box, I'll fix that :)

Roxas: I will do, I will also make Sentret a level lower as people seem to be struggling with that battle.

AngelOfPokémon: Hmm the description is correct, it's the actual move that seems to be wrong, as I was meant to change Double Team into Slack Off (and make slack off a common move most people can learn, to add a new area of strategy). I'll look into that.

The egg, yeah so does Bulbasaur, I'm not sure why it does that but it doesn't affect the Pokémon in any way and they still get named fine.

And the invisible wall isn't to stop you going to Johto/Indigo Plateu. It's just not a part of the beta yet as the area is completely untouched. You will find the same invisible wall at the end of Route 16 and north of Vermilion.

Alright Nikolai, I found two things. I'm not sure if you did this on purpose but but I can't enter any buildings in Sable City besides the training gym and " The Owen Household"

Also, here is a wierd shading thing on the trees.

.Awesome June 14th, 2010 4:34 PM

I like the story of you saving your mother. The maps are pretty good too.

Nikolai Fox June 14th, 2010 10:55 PM

Thank you tyking. Work will continue on the 27th, with new content and the found bugs fixed.

Tj: You can't enter those buildings as they haven't been "made" yet, and the ones you can enter are because they actually have a purpose. All buildings so far will make the next beta.

Thanks .awesome. I'm thinking of introducing another major plot in the next beta :)

(Reason work is on halt is, as I mentioned above, because I go to Newcastle for combat training very soon, and I'm spending most of my time preparing for that)

I'm still recruiting, any of you guys interested? Even an ideas guy would be fine right now.

tjwilliams24 June 15th, 2010 9:32 AM

I'll help with idea's and I'm I just started mapping. So if you need any help I'll try.

Nikolai Fox June 15th, 2010 12:36 PM

I don't need any mappers, thanks anyway.

PM me if you get any ideas on story or gameplay features (Y)

tjwilliams24 June 15th, 2010 1:04 PM

Alright, I just PMed you some ideas. And, is the bulbasaur side quest the one in Sable City where you find the kid five times? Oh by the way...could someone help me with that? I can't seem to find him..I only found him in the corner of the map.

qaz015393 June 15th, 2010 1:32 PM

great story man just downloaded it. & if u need someone for spriting & testing i can do those (even though i havn't done spriting in 2 yrs im starting to get back in it. & sorry i deleted everything on my other pc back then 2 make room since it had no memery & space left).

Nikolai Fox June 15th, 2010 1:51 PM

tjwilliams: Thanks I'll have a read. The Sable City side quest is indeed the Bulbasaur quest (which also has another, kind of hidden reward). He might be stood somewhere you can't see?

quz: Thank you :) you are on trial as a spriter. Do you do overworlds too by any chance?

As for tester, that depends why you want to be a tester (Y)

tjwilliams24 June 15th, 2010 2:06 PM

Alright, he only is the town right? Oh, and Nikolai, I was wondering if I could test future betas for you, since the first beta I was supposed to test was made public due to you being called off by the army.

Nikolai Fox June 15th, 2010 2:09 PM

He is only in the town, yeah. Yeah sure, when I get more work done on it (Y)

tjwilliams24 June 15th, 2010 2:16 PM

Alright, thanks.
Spoiler:
And you had some pretty tricky spots! Like the one behind his house...that's why I asked if he was only in the town. You wouldn't find him unless you walk through there. Good job on that.

qaz015393 June 15th, 2010 2:19 PM

i can try like i said i havn't done any pkmn haking in 2yrs (i said before i havnt sprited but i meant anything also) but im starting again because i wanted to make a hack with my story i have. bty il make a post a test sprite once my download is finished (because for some reason my serial # for pscs4 is keep expiring).
& as for the tester i would want to be one to help out to find aall the bugs, errors etc. (& also to see what it's like before i find a company to send a letter to [i know someone who knows a local gaming company # & is going to give it to me once he finds it again]).... well im off to see the Karate Kid 2010 while im waiting for my download to finish (since i have slow internet & it won't get down for 3hrs). Oh, and Nikolai good luck with your training & the army.

edit: here's some recoloring that i did to my one of my favorite trainer sprites (don't know who originaly made it or if its the main ruby rom. his name was carlos in 1 of the hacks[forgot the name]) & a ds trainer sprite resized for gba:

Spoiler:
http://i48.*.com/oa5bvs.jpg changed his white coat to black & hat dark blue

http://i45.*.com/34z0dvt.jpg same as above but added a shadow lugia render i found on google (i realize the lugia render is a little blurry but im just posting some sprites i quickly recolored)

http://i46.*.com/wlctt.jpg here is 1 of the brains from platinum (forgot his name). i made his hair & shirt red & gave him a black coat & pants (it's hard to tell since i made it smaller so it can be for gba but it was noticeable before)

http://i46.*.com/11kjju1.jpg again same as above but added shiny charizard & lugia (now that i look at it charizard looks a little blurry)
again i just recolored them quickly to post some examples & remember i havn't done any pokemon hacking for 2yrs & that includes sprites too. also these 2 took me about 1 1/2 hrs to recolor.

sonic6454 June 16th, 2010 1:02 AM

errr.... in route 1 i lost to the biker mars and when i spawn back i spawn to a pokecenter 2nd floor battle room you know the link one oh.. and i want to be a beta tester!

Nikolai Fox June 16th, 2010 1:12 AM

Ha, speaking of the Biker Mars with the rat Pokémon, did anyone get that pretty old reference? :p

This is normal sonic, as I haven't yet made a spawning point before Viridian City. Until the next beta all you can do is just save before every battle until you can use the Pokémon Center in Viridian.

Want to PM me about that story qaz?
And can you get any two trainers and put them into the same sprite? That would really help with the double battles. Your recolours are quite good.

And thanks for the good luck :) gonna need it for paras.

Edit: tj, please spoiler that part of the quest we want other people to struggle as much as you did ;)

I-Like-Shiny-Pichu June 16th, 2010 2:12 AM

Thought I ought to pop my head round to your thread, I am ready to test the next beta if you have one, just say on MSN and if I haven't said it already (I'm sure I have but hey) good luck with your training, let me know how it goes!

Nikolai Fox June 16th, 2010 2:30 AM

Cheers Jay. As for beta testing, it depends how my new ones do.

mehappy June 16th, 2010 7:26 AM

So I was thinking.

Your dynamic leveling of wild Pokémon has some good things, but some pretty bad things too.

For example, if you start off with one Pokémon, the system is very good for leveling this Pokémon up, because they are fairly easy battles to win, yet still provide a decent amount of Exp.

But if you decide to start making a team after this, you start to create a perpetually weaker team.

Say you start creating a team with a level 15 Pikachu, each wild Pokémon you encounter is 3 levels lower than the weakest, so your team's levels become 15, 12, 9, 6, 3, and 1.

And then you go to battle a practice gym leader or whatnot and all his Pokémon are higher than my strongest, and all of the rest of mine seem "worthless".

Which is very annoying to me because I basically end up sitting there for 198749 hours trying to level them up, which is very tedious. :(

tl;dr I don't like the *current* dynamic leveling system, HOWEVER, I think if a little bit of it was changed it could be very successful and workable.

Nikolai Fox June 16th, 2010 7:47 AM

Thanks for the feedback there mehappy. I did realise this the first time I did a serious test, and I'm thinking of the optimal way to make it better. For the time being, when you want to train a weaker Pokémon just deposit your stronger Pokémon, or fight trainers (re-battling trainers will become the best way to train your Pokémon when there are more).

As for the gyms and training gyms. They are intentionally very difficult (the gyms will be even harder than the training gym), as they provide the player with a really good, but optional challenge. You don't need to do them to advance the plot, but they give good rewards, some of which you can only get from them. (So yeah, you won't need to beat gyms to use HMs)

habit12 June 16th, 2010 7:56 AM

Not to be mean but it looks boring like the game u have a very good idea but it's the same house for the town I know that you have limited resouces but still

Should "gary" be capitalized here?
This is the guy in Viridian City in front of the Gym & PokéCenter

Nikolai Fox June 16th, 2010 8:28 AM

Habit, I'm not one of those hackers that throws some new tiles in, goes "lolnewhack" and moves on to the next project. The main priority now is gameplay, story and features. Graphics and sound come later. But I will be changing some tiles.

Don't get me wrong I welcome negative feedback (I've gotten quite a bit and will be changing them), but I cannot stand those people I've seen in other threads criticising good hacks because they didn't start with the least important part of a hack.

Hey Nikolai, I put a spoiler on that comment for you. Oh and I made a userbar for you =]

EDIT: fixed pikachu sprite

siper x June 16th, 2010 11:54 AM

the practice gym seems very hard. i have caught a doduo (to lazy to find out how to spell it) and got the bualbasaur, and all 3 of them are level 15. i think you should change that because the beedrill always uses twin needles, which either kills, or does over half damage on them.

mehappy June 16th, 2010 12:15 PM

I think its cool how the Practice Gym Leader's name is the same as mine in real life, and it's not a common name :D

EDIT: Here's another "bug", just something you overlooked when renaming moves!

qaz015393 June 16th, 2010 1:22 PM

i vmed u the sprites Nikolai only did 6 bc i didnt know how many u wanted. & also pmed u the story 4 my hack that im doing.

Nikolai Fox June 16th, 2010 11:15 PM

Pretty cool userbar tj, who is the man on the left? Also, Red won't be portrayed as an important character until much later in the game, so could you have him wearing a black cloak that covers half of his face, wearing jeans and a torn white shirt?

siper: As I said, they are meant to be very challenging for players who want that. The main reason you are having so much trouble though is due to the tier list. Apart from ubers and legendaries Pokémon are now in tier lists. Your evolution 1 Pokémon are tier one, while his end evolution Pokémon are tier 3, giving him a big advantage over yours.

mehappy: That's because I haven't edited Diglett yet, and no other Pokémon I've edited has had the move Magnitude. I edit these things as I go along y'see :)
And what an awesome coincidence :D

ElectricScyther June 17th, 2010 6:37 AM

Looks good. I like the fact that the routes, cities, etc. are expanded, and the fact that there are plenty of sidequests to expand the storyline. The level matching system also adds a lot to the battle system.
Good work. Keep it up.

tjwilliams24 June 17th, 2010 6:50 AM

Well, I went to google images and looked up team rocket sprite, and he came up, so I thought he'd be an admin, due to his clothes. And could you send me the sprite of the character you want me to replace Red with? I can't sprite.

qaz015393 June 17th, 2010 6:56 AM

i played this yesterday & it was pretty good. cant wait 4 this 2 be fully done. & Nikolai i vmped u a q that i would like u to answer so i can add my sprites in my rom.

Nikolai Fox June 17th, 2010 7:17 AM

Thanks Electric Scyther :)

Ah ok. I don't have the sprite yet tj.

Thanks qaz. I replied (Y)

qaz015393 June 17th, 2010 11:49 AM

thanks. well if u dont have anything else 4 me to do Nikolai il be studying 4 my quiz thats on mon. & il be back after the 24 so i can study & pass my final. if u still want me 2 do some things let me know right away so i can do them with in the next 2 days.

Nikolai Fox June 17th, 2010 11:54 AM

Oh, well right now all I want is three trainer sprites of:

Two male Rockets.
Two female Rockets.
A male and a female Rocket.

If you can do that, great thanks!

Nikolai Fox June 17th, 2010 12:03 PM

Also, I have been thinking for a while now how to implement Hoenn Pokémon, when I won't be including Hoenn. (Not right now at least, as it is impossible due to the place name limitation). Here is what I have come up with.

Some rare Hoenn Pokémon will be obtainable once by doing side quests. These side quests can only be started after beating the 16 gym leaders, with one quest + reward Pokémon per gym. They won't just be rewards from gym leaders, as they will require a the completion of the quest. They will either be given after finishing the quest, or a part of the quest will have you fight the Pokémon and you will have to catch it.

The rest will be in a new mini-region, which will have some quests which give more and the rest being catchable in this new region.

Here are the gym leader side quest rewards I have planned. Most of these side quests will involve the actual gym leader.

Electrike - Surge
Solrock and Lunatone - Brock
Mudkip - Misty
Treeko - Erika
Torhic - Blaine
Seviper - Janine
Ralts - Sabrina
Beldum - Gary

Taillow - Falkner
Anorith - Bugsy
Zangoose - Whitney
Shuppet - Morty
Makuhita - Chuck
Aron - Jasmine
Pryce - Glalie
Bagon - Clair
