Breeding: How long before you just give up?

I've been biking up and down route 34 trying to hatch a female riolu for about 4 hours.

I wanna hear your stories of the hours spent breeding that you wish you could add back to your life.

Success stories welcome too! Im sure I'll be less bitter when I see that female sign...

~Gary~ June 7th, 2010 7:06 AM

i have been biking for 3 hours for male charmander

kaiser32 June 7th, 2010 7:08 AM

I've been trying to get a shiny magickarp (DO NOT ASK!) and so far only ****** ones. but I did hatch one with a good ivs

PiPVoda June 7th, 2010 7:15 AM

I spent about an hour trying to hatch a munchlax a few months ago..only to remember that I forgot to give the Snorlax the full incense I had >_<.

Another time I was trying to hatch a shiny pokemon from my shiny Starmie..and lets just say it took too long and I never got it in the end.

Sorry for your news, your female should come sooner or later!

DarkSlayer1331 June 7th, 2010 7:34 AM

Why is it taking so long? I don't remember Breeding taking this long in previous games. I haven't tried breeding in my SS yet, but maybe I should... I remember in LG that I could hatch a Charmander by biking for like... ten minutes at most. I had a circuit I would do, which included going down that biker hill.

I wonder if the steps increased or something. Because I HATE breeding because of that one reason.

DarkSlayer1331 June 7th, 2010 7:38 AM

That would be the only thing that would make sense to me. I really am not joking when I say that it did not take me long to hatch Charmanders/Squirtles/etc. in LG. And actually I hatched Togepi in SS before I even go to Azalea Town. I did a lot of training before even going into the cave. I'm a nut when it comes to training before I get to certain areas. XD

RodeoJones June 7th, 2010 7:41 AM

I hatched a female riolu finally but it was the wrong nature...AHHHH!

It'll probably be faster just to keep on trying for the right-natured one rather than evolving the one I got into lucario so I can put it with a raticate then pray for a hasty riolu. Breeding takes some time and dedication let me tell ya...

kaiser32 June 7th, 2010 7:45 AM

Yeah I think I'll use Pearl as my "breeding cage" for now. Until Bulbapedia or something does a study. rofl. I'm trying to be a top of the line breeder. Hahaha

Elise June 7th, 2010 9:00 AM

I always do my breeding on Pearl... I haven't even tried it on SS yet lol.

I really haven't had many success stories so far, since I've just started breeding, but I find something kinda hypnotic and fun about biking for hours on end.. Is that just me? And even though I'm still learning all the ropes, it's like I'm a proud parent every time one o' those cute lil guys pop out of their eggs! (:

Mew~ June 7th, 2010 9:04 AM

I remember trying to hatch pokemon in pearl! I just got a slugma from my emerald version using pal park with the ability flame body and it cut the time it took to hatch my eggs, I would just get on a bike and travel around sinnoh endlessly just for the fun of it! Oh and I used to run around in amity square so not only would I just get a newly hatched pokemon but 10000x items (useless accsessories) my pokemon picked up while running XD

banngr June 7th, 2010 9:06 AM

I did a charmander in 15 mins in heart gold :s Why is it taking you 3 hours? Are you doing 5 steps every 10 mins or something?

LeeBee June 7th, 2010 9:07 AM

I usually do all of my breeding in Pearl, as it's where I keep all my pokemon. However, the one time I did breed in SS it seemed a little quicker, perhaps because it was biking around Goldenrod instead of the same old up/down path I usually follow in Pearl!^Q^)/
Magby really helps with 'flame body', it honestly only take a few minutes to hatch an egg, at most, when you have him in your party.

AceOfSpades0707 June 7th, 2010 10:14 AM

Put a Magmar in your team with the ability "Flame Body". It cuts the hatching time in half.

redsaber5859 June 7th, 2010 1:21 PM

lol, i just breed and deal with the nature, cycling road in thisgame is small... so i just have a race with myself to go from safari zone to bills house, about 2 regions long with 5 eggs and my lv. 100 shiny toxicroak

MrsNorrington June 7th, 2010 1:25 PM

I took a few days to breed 8 female eevees, they kept hatching as males. It took forever to do, but I didn't feel like giving up.

redsaber5859 June 7th, 2010 2:10 PM

8! wow! dont you only need 7 though?

shookie June 7th, 2010 2:22 PM

I got a Japanese Ditto and decided to try to Masuda a shiny Skarmory...

I hatched about 100 of them before getting frustrated and stopping. I'll continue one day when I literally have nothing to do but ride up and down in a straight line.

This is what I always do when it comes on hatching a Pokémon. I'm surprised your Riolu hasn't hatched yet, it usually takes me around 10-20 minutes to hatch a Riolu.

Thorns June 7th, 2010 3:40 PM

Question, why does the gender matter (unless it's a Combee)?

MegaSlowBro. June 7th, 2010 3:40 PM

Still nature breeding for a Timid female treecko xD I forgot how long it's been (I've played on and off lately) ^^;

But at least a shiny treecko hatched yesterday =D

Elise June 7th, 2010 3:42 PM

Great balls of fire! I never knew that Magmar/Magby's "flame body" did that? I'm never going to try to hatch my pokies again without it! (:

If other people are like me, it simply matters for the aesthetics of the Gender symbol. I much rather my pokemon to be female if the character I'm playing is female, just because the vast majority of the time in game female trainers have female pokemon, and males have male pokemon.

Technically, gender only matters if you are wanting to breed specific natures (female) or egg moves (male) onto your pokemon, but for me it has more to do with those little symbols than anything else...

DarkSlayer1331 June 7th, 2010 3:56 PM

Yes, that's why I love my Magmar. Also, is it more likely to hatch a shiny Pokemon or something? I don't understand why people breed for shinies...

I think that might just be a rumour, or if it is true it can only be a very small percentage increase (・_・、)
I've been using my Magmar for years to aid in hatching, and I've never hatched a shiny.
I guess people breed for them simply so they can say "..ooh, I have a shiny pokemon!" I must admit, there are a few pokemon that I would love in shiny (Umbreon!。・ω・。), but I don't think I'd ever have the patience/determination to actually breed for one.

Guy June 7th, 2010 4:53 PM

This is definitely something I can relate to and is one of the reasons why I've been so withdrawn from breeding Pokémon lately. I used to spend hours amongst hours trying to hatch for the right nature depending on what Pokémon it was, and even then, if it had the right nature I needed to make sure it had decent IVs for when I EV train it. So, if I could, I would definitely take back those hours spent on breeding for something more time worthy. I guess it's just all part of the fun in the game though.

Seeing as this thread related to more than just HeartGold and SoulSilver, I'll go ahead and move this to General Pokémon Gaming.

I specifically mentioned the Masuda Method, which is one way to try and obtain a shiny Pokémon. It doesn't boost the chances to, say, 1/10, but making it four times more likely to hatch a shiny Pokémon is better than nothing.
A lot of people prefer to breed shinies for several reasons, the most obvious being that you can control its IVs and natures, rather than relying on catching something in the wild.

Darkness98 June 7th, 2010 5:25 PM

Ive biked For 4 Hours today trying too hatch a female squirtle for my friend. He always hates breeding cuz of the time so I do it for him.

RodeoJones June 7th, 2010 8:24 PM

I was breeding so I could get crunch as an egg move. That's why I wanted the female riolu, which I finally got. All that cycling paid off!

level. June 8th, 2010 5:48 AM

I often hatch about 10 eggs a day because I want a pokemon with good IVs and not to mention the right nature and ability. HGSS is great for that sort of stuff mainly because of the power items and Everstone working on both males and females.
I don't care about shinies though.

mlcclm098 June 8th, 2010 6:39 AM

I"m trying to catch a ditto, becuase I just got the evee. I saved and then talked to bill, and hopefully the evee would be female. But no. So iI did that for 2 hrs. And i cant catch a ditto, since they never show up. But whatever.

Trainer Galza June 11th, 2010 2:43 AM

I've been trying to breed for a female Eevee (that or catch one in the wild) so I can hopefully turn it into a Glaceon and call it a day. I want do to the same with Vaporeon, but I'm kinda weird like that.

Haven't had luck with that yet, keep getting male Eevees.. haven't really been working on it much. Friendly evolutions are just as frustrating. FINALLY got Jigglypuff out of the way!

Oh yeah.. get a Magcargo. I called mine "Hatcher" .. lol makes things so much easier

Princess Pichu June 13th, 2010 6:44 PM

I usually breed batches of pokemon for about 3 days before I go, "Oh screw it, I'll just go with whatever nature. D:"

One time I got really lucky with Eevee and got a female with the right nature right away. Lol

EmeraldSerenade June 13th, 2010 6:55 PM

I'm really bad at breeding pokes with decent IV's, so I just get my friend to breed all my pokes :3

chickenofunity June 24th, 2010 7:47 AM

I get bored quite quickly, but it took ages to get the Feebas I wanted, cus I wanted a girl as well as one who liked the right type of Pokeblock.
I've tried Breeding for shinies, but cus I don't really understand it, I give up quite quickly. I also always leave pokemon in the dayacre too long, after the pokemon I want has hatched, so I have an extra egg. I then put it in my box and forget what it is. It's quite weird.

Hybrid Trainer June 24th, 2010 8:07 AM

Well i once was breeding for a whole day in my SS trying to get a shiny haunter. when i did actually get one my game crashed! i hsad to breed for a whole day again after that trying to get him again. oh and another story is when i was breading for a shiny nidoking. every single egg was a male until a shiny one came out and it was a female :/ she's just sat in my box now at Lv. 100 doing nothing while her brother is a major part of my team :P

Myzou June 24th, 2010 8:08 AM

I decided to ignore IVs.

I breed 6 pokemon that fit the nature/ability criteria, and then check the IVs of those 6. I choose the best one and raise it, even if the IVs are bad.

I've bred about 300 Electrike's though... only 2 came out to be right nature with Hidden Power Grass.... still trying for 4 more.

Pokémon Ranger ✩ Moriarty June 24th, 2010 11:16 AM

I'm still trying to hatch a Modest Feebas after...um, three days. :U I'm kicking myself because when I restarted Platinum I forgot to rescue my Modest Ditto + Everstone, so I'm stuck with an Adamant Ditto and a series of Adamant, Calm or Bashful natured Feebas. :| I caught a load of Ditto on LG last night to see if one of them would come up as Modest, but they were all useless too. Pah. PAH I SAY.

The only thing I've ever given up on breeding-wise was breeding a Shinx with Ice Fang. And that's only because I couldn't find a female Shinx anywhere wtf.
