Pokemon Ruby w/ Leaf Green

I am going to have several "foreign" Pokemon in my Ruby, courtesy of my Leaf Green. I've gotten a few eggs, and have test hatched them. But, before I start, can I have a few tips on their movesets? I'll put what I was going to give them eventually:

Torchic- Flamethrower, Bulk Up, Brick Break, ?

Bulbasaur(EGG)- Giga Drain, Leech Seed, Solarbeam, Toxic

Chinchou(EGG)- Thunderbolt, Charge, Surf, Confuse Ray

Skarmory(EGG)- Spikes, Steel Wing, Protect, Roar

Porygon(EGG)- Conversion2, ? , ?, ?

Larvitar(EGG)- Earthquake, Screech, Crunch, Rockslide

Their natures don't really matter, but other comments would help. Feel free to lecture!

advanced trainer's guide for starters... go read it for some battling basics.

Torchic (Blaziken)- overheat/sky uppercut/earthquake/rock slide

Bulbasaur (Venusaur)- refer to the Advanced Battledex

Chinchou (Lanturn)- thunderbolt/ice beam/toxic/rest or chesto rest

Skarmory- spike/whirlwind/drill peck/toxic

Porygon (Porygon2)- recover/thunderbolt/ice beam/toxic

Lavitar (Tyranitar)- earthquake/rock slide/brick break or taunt/dragon dance

The most problematic thing is that you got direct overshadows of one another... mainly, Lanturn and Porygon2, whose common movesets are exactlya like, besides for recover vs rest. You can change Lanturn to have surf while Porygon2 to have psychic to be different, but it's just not as effective as boltbeam then...

Frost has pretty much covered everything you need to know. Heh heh, that second Venasaur in you sig reminds me of Godzilla =D!

It took me forever to find it! Thanks for your advice. My team is mostly in-game, but I guess I can use them for link battling, too... If you have anymore comments... then feel free!

why not have conversion? that way u can get stab. so have recover, thunder bolt, psychic, conversion/toxic

Venasaur November 11th, 2004 9:54 PM

Hmm... I was thinking Conversion for STAB... or Conversion2 for defense... But it think they both work so well...

kirby00 November 11th, 2004 10:34 PM

how bout make it a tank? recover, conversion 2, recycle, toxic. now dont have leftovers...have a berry boosting stat of sp def. use recycle after it is used... use recover to heal after activating berry. conversion2 to make sure hits are taken gradually, or
@leftovers; substitute, conversion, thunder bolt, conversion2/recover. either of the last 2 will help def wise. u simply use conversion for stab, conversion 2 to gain reistances which will also help subsitute, and then attack from behind, which may infact cause paralysis as well
finally u can use
tri attack, swagger, subsitute/conversion2, psych-up @leftovers. u have high chance to cuase a condition (30% total), confuse while basically swords dancing yourself, subsitute/conversion2 for def, and leftovers to heal. with porygons defs, evenwith the attack boost, the sub should be able to possible take 1 hit, and if not leftovers should provide healing. no need for conversion1 b/c it is already stab.
also besides both porygons, mr mime is the only pokemon that can anturally learn recycle...

Venasaur November 12th, 2004 12:24 AM

That's an idea... where do you get swagger, again?

Frostweaver November 12th, 2004 1:52 AM

And that setup takes like forever >>; Recycle is useless, because you activate a berry at < than 25% hp, and by then you'll need a heavy amount of luck to survive quick attacks. Now you'll have to heal up, before finally being able to use recycle... This is at least a 3 turn process just to boost 2 level of a stat... terribly slow setup, and dangerous too.

Conversion and Conversion2 are not used for the reason why Kecleon's ability is meant to be skill swapped away asap, because it can be easily abused. Most Pokemon have 2 attacks, and oen of those attack will SE against the other (ex: rock slide + earthquake, which means forcing a rock type on you, then earthquake, provided that the opponent knows the nature of the 2 conversions and is smart enough to figure that out, but that isn't hard anyway).

As for swagger psych up tri attack, that's another slow strategy... Porygon2's defense is not that high unless you invest in maximum hp + def (and you pretty much have to because you're using swagger), which makes Porygon2's attack hideous then. Tri attack's 30% chance is once again, a relatively low percentage. 10% par is terrible for thunderwave's 100% accuracy. it's a strategy that relies on luck too much again. You're hoping for...

Turn 1
-opponent uses an attack, but it cannot harm Porygon2 and it can't be a move that can block swagger
-Porygon2 uses swagger

Turn2
-opponent obviously tries to attack to abuse swagger, or just plain old switch out (if so, restart scenario with the possible fact that the opponent have done damage last round)
-Porygon2 use psych up

Turn3
-opponent tries the same as turn2
-Porygon2 will have to use recover, or finally, tri attack (even with psych up boost, Porygon2's attack is finally be just around 400, but for a swords danced Pokemon, 400 is pathetic... should seriously be in 500s at least)

And during all of this time, pray to Mew that there's no Gengar/Dusclops/Own Tempo/Skarmory/Weezing/lum berry/substitute/even safeguard to destroy you.

It's nice to think of new strategy... but highly luck dependent ones along with lengthy setup...? I might as well try Absol with calm mind/swords dance/double team/baton pass with brightpowder.

Venasaur November 12th, 2004 2:13 PM

That's a good suggestion... I never thought of it. Oh, well, the best i can do is find my own strategy...

kirby00 November 12th, 2004 3:34 PM

how about @leftovers: subsitute, conversion 2, recover, toxic?

It seems that Porygon is best used as a Boltbeamer.

[email protected] Berry
Nature: +Sp. attack, -attack
EVs Sp attack, speed (I guess)
Ice Beam
T-bolt
Confuse Ray
Rest

I think this would work fine! :D

Venasaur November 12th, 2004 4:21 PM

where does that confuse ray come from? And, what's wrong with flamethrower? I haven't seen a Porygon with flamethrower...

Porygon does not know nor can it learn either Confuse Ray and Flamethrower.

Mullet November 12th, 2004 5:50 PM

I ment Porygon2. I just checked Netbattle and to my suprise it can't learn Confuse Ray, so try this.

[email protected] Berry
Nature: +Sp. attack,- Attack
Evs: Sp. attack, and speed (I guess)
Ice Beam
T-bolt
Psychic
Recover

This one will work, he can learn all of these attacks because I checked NB while doing this.

Venasaur November 12th, 2004 6:48 PM

Ohh! I knew something was wrong... You'd think it could use Flamethrower...

Toothache November 12th, 2004 8:02 PM

I'd rather go for something like this with Porygon2:

[email protected] Berry
EV: 170 HP, 170 Sp Att, 170 Sp Def
Nature: + Sp Def/Sp Att, - Att
Ice Beam
Thunderbolt
Recycle
Recover

Recycle gives you some status protection with the Lum Berry, and this is faster than Rest too (except you don't heal as much with Recover). If you can get Leech Seed on your opponent, that will help tanking as well, or if you're desperate, you can Baton Pass Ingrain. (Smeargle only tactic, I believe).

Venasaur November 12th, 2004 10:45 PM

But I can't get a Smeargle... though I want one...
