What do you like in ROM Hacks?

Credits to altariaking for the idea.

This thread is about things you like in ROM Hacks.

I like ROM Hacks with decapitalization for trainer classes, trainer names, items, etc. ;except for Pokemon names however. I like when we're able to run inside buildings like Gen. 4. Hearing Hoenn music in Fire Red hacks like Rijon Adventures and Azure Horizons. I sometimes like new plots in ROM Hacks as in Identity and WARPED that don't involve badges. I appreciate hex editing in ROM Hacks.

I also like seeing ROM Hacks with the tiles already in the game since the new tiles seems overrated and overdone. Certain ROM Hacks like Light Platinum and Flora Sky have Generation 4 tiles and I like them.

What are your thoughts?

Cinaed666 July 2nd, 2010 2:01 AM

I don't like it always being the same, generic storyline.
My hack is using all stock tiles from FR for my custom Johto maps, and the main story isn't about collecting badges, however you need to complete them to get to new areas.
I'm also adding some stuff like being able to jump over 'broken' parts of fences.

miksy91 July 2nd, 2010 2:54 AM

I like hacks of a person who has actually put effort on it (= has done SOMETHING itself).
Not explaining what this SOMETHING means; you can think about what it might mean yourself.

Also, I prefer 1st, 2nd & 4th generation hacks to the 3rd one.
But real 3rd gen hacks are nice too.

Ninja Caterpie July 2nd, 2010 3:31 AM

I prefer it when it feels like a Pokémon game - ie. 8-badges-evil-team-storyline, Nintendo-ey tiles and stuff. And, you know what, even though everyone says they like originality, the most famous and popular hacks on this forum are like that - Genesis, rijonAdventures, Brown, Prism, etc. It's familiarity - and it's good.

Oh, and it can't be hard. HGSS-Johto level is good. :D

dead-man-walking July 2nd, 2010 5:40 AM

inb4 'omg thread title fail' xD

Now, on-topic. I think it's similarity, just like Ninja Caterpie said. Especially when topped with challenging difficulty (But not over-challenging like in rijonAdventures X... Gawd, Rival's starter is Level 7 from the beginning >_>).

Also, something that's actually unique. And tiles that don't hurt my eyes. And sprites that don't hurt my eyes.

*squints eyes*

Blaze The Hedgehog July 2nd, 2010 6:21 AM

Obviously, It has to stick to that 'catch dem pokemanz and get dem darn badges' but I can't help feel that many new hacks appearing keep sticking too close to that linear storyline. Add some zazz to your story lines, make it more believable and exiting/interesting.

We don't need 4th gen. Pokemon. EVER. For me, It ruins the fact that Sinnoh Pokemon belong on the DS (Stupid reason and very opinionated but that's how I feel). And besides, many people make their sprites look rotten when they're shrinked to fit in with the pixel limit.

Fakemon are OK, but don't add a few. Why add two or three and keep the originals in? Make it at least around a 100 or so to make it seem like they're a new species that have just been discovered. You will have to replace others but that's the price to pay if you want your own Pokecreations in-game.

Tiles. Presentation is always an important thing. Don't use really bad tiles, try and learn from others if you want to make your own and DON"T STEAL!

I tried to make this sound more like my opinion but I guess it's more of a guideline. Oops :D

6ryan4 July 2nd, 2010 10:28 AM

I don't really like new tiles all that much...I'd rather just stick to normal tiles. Creating everything from scratch is also annoying and overdone. Keep it simple, but original. New storylines are cool, but keep it like Pokemon. No swearing (*cough*Quartz*cough*), no mature themes, etc. I give up on playing hacks that don't feel like Pokemon to me, therefore, NO FAKEMON PLEASE. I hate that. The game isn't familiar with Fakemon. It's also hard to play because you can't even guess the Fakemon's type!

ConorB July 5th, 2010 8:48 AM

I like different storylines, not just the normal badge collecting then beat the elite four. Something with a bit of a challenge is also good.

Tropical Sunlight July 5th, 2010 10:06 AM

  • Tiles good to look at,
  • many scripts but not too many,
  • PLAYABILITY,
  • no bugs/errors/glitches,
  • new music - especially if it's nicely inserted,
  • nice maps with no tile errors,
  • edited texts such as signs and people in Pokecenters and Pokemarts too,
  • interesting storyline with a twist,
  • the ability to choose 1 of 3 starter Pokemon,
  • a bit of humour in the texts,
  • Fakemon (but only if properly and nicely inserted) - this includes 4th and 5th Generation Pokemon,
  • edited OWs of the running and cycling and fishing poses,
  • people who give you random items,
  • Gym Leaders,
  • a proper rival that appears many times - but not for battles but for other things too,
  • an evil team,
  • receiving a Masterball late in the game,
  • as least as possible real life referrence,
  • every city has its own houses and tiles,
  • at least one forest, at least one cave,
  • enough walking space,
  • in-game trades,
  • a new textbox,
  • and many more things I could think of.

Orinjmate July 5th, 2010 11:32 AM

good tiles! (I think I am the only person who thinks that graphics is the most important thing in a hack)

gamefreak6597 July 8th, 2010 2:55 PM

the tiles. Also i like it when they seem similar to what nintendo may make

Pokémanz July 10th, 2010 3:27 AM

I like Fakemon.
It makes the game so much less boring IMO.

The Noob Hacker July 10th, 2010 8:21 PM

I welcome orginality. No badges, fine. Fakemon, if good, then okay. Most of the hacks that I think of creating will be based on war, might not even have a Pokedex!

BreDaBeazt July 13th, 2010 11:40 AM

Id like to see a hack that has the new pokemon black and white sprites in it like zekrom and reshirem(however you spell it).they could zorua and zoruark

im a baaaaad speller

Tomackze July 14th, 2010 3:37 PM

Some of the things I love...

1. New starters
2. New storyline (I love interesting one)
3. New pokemon (Fakemon or DP included)
4. New places to travel
5. Some new techniques you can use outside of battle (like Headbutt)
6. New graphics
7. The originality of the games now.
8. The fact that you can actually change the games.

RRM July 15th, 2010 4:38 PM

  • new music
  • interesting history
  • nice places to explore
  • BEING ABLE TO EVOLVE WITHOUT TRADE! (seriously, I hated when I couldn't get Alakazam or Gengar.)
  • Being able to get rare pokemon somewhat more easily
  • etc...

NarutoActor July 15th, 2010 4:52 PM

I don't know, I usually don't like playing hacks. I do however like hacks that stays true to itself, and have one stly for the whole game. I also like games with an in depth storyline.

SephirothX July 15th, 2010 7:03 PM

I prefer hacks that completely overhaul the game. New tiles aren't a necessity (unless it's a FR/LG mod - ugh), but new stories, Pokémon, regions, and game mechanics get me hooked.
I can't stand how the official games all-caps freaking EVERYTHING, so properly lowercased names, items, etc. are a feature I appreciate.

Petemon July 21st, 2010 1:43 AM

i like
D/P/P pokemon
different starters eg absol skarmory meditite
cool storyline not 8 badges e-4 ect
having FUN

tuna97 July 21st, 2010 2:13 AM

i like when the hack has a goood storyline...new tiles...fakemons...D/P/Pl pokemons ...black white pokemons hehhehe (mijumaru, pokabu, tsutaja) ...special events ...legendaries...good scripts...new maps...new sprites and new OWs...the end :D

Awesome July 21st, 2010 3:22 AM

I like it when someone does more than just edit the text with a text editor, change maps, and add fakemon. Thats a good first step. But also, the hack has to be enjoyable to play, fun, a little challenging... and it can't make my eyes bleed with bad graphics, either.

Hybrid Trainer July 21st, 2010 3:34 AM

I like new tiles in a rom that are either custom or from another generation.:D
However i dont like it when they go completely wild and they end up looking like something off final fantasy instead of Pokemon. :(
I also like it when they add new Pokemon whether it be fakemon or D/P Pokemon.
What i don't like however is when they put only a few D/P Pokemon in there games and then leave out the rest. Either have them all or have none.
I also like it when they have a completely new storyline and not one that's just been slightly changed with a text editor.

raidenx2008 August 2nd, 2010 6:50 AM

I like:
1) Original Pokemon & Starter set, hated fakemon until the end. If someone is able to include the FULL 4th gen. (DP) pokemon set (386>>493), I vote for that.
2) A brand new region^^
3) A brand new STORYLINE, not like Quartz/Marble...phail.....
4) Some 1337 is good, not too much....

rstar095 August 3rd, 2010 5:39 PM

this seems like a good place to post this for an opinion, i hope its not too off topic. Well I know you guys dont like the same old badge system so im making a hack thats a lot more open world, and inspired a lot by fallout 3. Would you guys like to see that in a hack, and what would improve it?
Also, to the people that dislike fakemon, what do you think of fakemon that evolve from real pokemon

hitsu. August 3rd, 2010 9:27 PM

As long as it's a GB/C hack with new scripts, it's fine by me.

Binary August 4th, 2010 7:55 PM

Something new and creative. Tiles, scripts, a new region, storyline, an evil team, fakemon, music...almost every hack has that.

I myself don't play too many hacks. I only do so if the particular hack has caught my interest.

~NeOn~ August 8th, 2010 9:07 AM

I like the hack that has a very good whole, good scripts, maps, tiles, storyline and other graphics (sprites, OW, region map etc.).
How Nintendo's games, has everything I mentioned above will.

altariaking August 9th, 2010 2:54 PM

Fakemon. If they're good that is. For me, fakemon makes a hack original (bar topaz because the fakemon look like blobs) and I also like a hack with a little bit of humour, which is why I like pokemon Quartz and Sienna. I also like it when the hacker has actually, you know, hacked, instead of just clicking a few buttons and calling it a hack.

Shiny Quagsire August 9th, 2010 3:43 PM

Good quality scripts and maps. I can't stand a hack where you literally have the same scripts as the base! IE:

I also can't stand when they just jumble up the maps in a different order, even when they have entirely new scripts, because it feels like your still in the old game, only with a few better graphics :(

Well, that's my word about it :)
~Shiny Quagsire

youyi3318 August 9th, 2010 4:29 PM

I'd like to retranslate the ROM because the Chinese Edition before could only use "TOO BAD" this word to describe.

DuoRyan August 13th, 2010 6:02 PM

I like hack that:
Used mix tile (mix . with ruby with other generation)
Cool script
Fun map
Effort
Don't care what other say and keep on hacking

timaeus222 August 14th, 2010 10:43 PM

I like it when the hack is challenging, has a purpose, and has some sort of custom map(s).

Also, if I had a patch that were a hard mode of FireRed, plus a new area, would anyone play it?

Resultz August 15th, 2010 8:01 AM

i doubt itd be approved.

creativity!
nice tiles.
RSE hacks
nice scenery in the maps

Heart's Soul August 15th, 2010 8:31 AM

GB/GBC Hacks are usually the best. It's a harsh process of elimination. HEX Editing is quite simple, when you get the hang of it, but I am still confused in some areas.
I also enjoy tiles that are realistic, especially in forests. (Somehow, Prism is still odd to me- CBM made a good job on it)
One pet peeve is grammar mistakes. Sure, you can make a great joke out of it by having a major (or minor) character use l33t while everyone else speaks like a normal person.

You know what? When I figure out how to fix PRU, I'm going to make all Pokemon able to be captured.

dragoniteuser August 25th, 2010 2:29 AM

What would you like to see in Pokemon Hacks?

Well the title says it all...
There's a thread on what annoys you in hacks, but I don't belive this one exists...
So, what would you like to see in hacks?
As for me, I would LOVE to have an alternative to bike! What I had in mind, is for a great ow spriter to make a hero's ow riding a pokemon like Arcanine, Rapidash, Tauros, or something like that! In my opinion it would be so much better, and more fun than just plain, old bike riding!
Also place for grinding, something like EV training sector in "Pokemon the Tempest" by icychill66.

So how about you...?

SonicBlazePlatinum August 25th, 2010 2:56 AM

I think I already made a thread on this. It's called "What do you like in ROM Hacks". Except I forgot the you so... :S I'll post a comment on that thread.

SonicBlazePlatinum August 25th, 2010 2:59 AM

Yeah I forgot the you in the tile, but NOTHING's prefect. This is another post from me about what I myself also would like. I like Fire Red ROM Hacks the most despite being overhacked. Well Fire Red does have the ability for 2 regions. I will make a ROM Hack of Emerald soon. Will it be coming this December?

Sewzie August 25th, 2010 5:57 AM

I love the fresh, new, and original storylines. Playing through the same plotlines of the original Pokemon games (non-hacked) over and over again can get a little boring.

Faline August 28th, 2010 8:21 PM

Something that'll challenge me to work to the hardest to win and achieve success. :D

delrachi August 29th, 2010 1:14 PM

i like to see new pokemon in hacks

bowlerdude September 2nd, 2010 5:13 AM

Mainly, creativity and playability. I don't care if there's new tiles, new Pokemon, new moves, or anything like that. I do, however, want a good storyline, a new region, new scripts (at least change up what people are saying - writing a simple message script or editing the strings in existing scripts is so easy..) and a game that you can play without having to grind for hours.

I like it if the attacks and stuff are decapitalized too, although it's not a necessity IMO.

Nightcrow September 6th, 2010 2:01 PM

-I think it has to be a challenge. All of the official pokemon games are way too easy.
-Games that find the balance between the original pokemon and the fakemon. Usually people can create a few really good fakemon, and the others aren't all that great. So yeah, replace the less popular pokemon with new ones that look awesome. But don't ruin the games with low quality fakemon!
-A training area where you can go fight trainers limitless without using the VS seeker. It also needs to have a goal, like an item for finishing the training area or so. After that it needs to be reset instead of becoming a useless area you finished.
-Either start with the national dex or have 2 area's of the same size. Don't have all extra pokemon of the national dex sit crammed in a small new area.
-No weaklings and no ubers. Being able to train the pokemon you like best, without becomming cursed by it, is awesome. It's unfair that a lvl 100 butterfree would get annihallated by a ton of pokemon that are 20 lvls behind!

That's all i can think of atm.

astar_01 September 8th, 2010 8:45 AM

I like a hack where it's all new!
I don't want to replay old scripts or explore old maps.
I like it when the tiles are nice and crisp.
I also like it when there are new overworlds.

Isn't much to ask is it?

hackerofdarkness September 11th, 2010 4:14 AM

I like a hack when he give it his/her best to the hack and never give up.

874521 September 11th, 2010 4:24 AM

I like the hack wherein first, the concept is different, like being the bad one, just an example. Second, something new to hackers' eyes, things like bus change to train, something like that... Third, (optional) new tiles and overworlds... Last, nice story, extravagant scripts!!!! I mostly like those in anime... that's for my likes in a hack...

Haz September 21st, 2010 2:44 AM

I like GOOD fakemon, not blobby-looking piles of *beeeeeeep*
FR/LG tiles with SOME new ones added. Looks great and feels familiar at the same time.
A fun storyline. Makes the game much more humorous for the player, a.k.a me :D
