Watcha Gonna Do? EV, or Fun?

Well i know theres a ton of people out here who will go insane for a EVd pokemon

so Im wonderin, are you guys gonna EV while playin threw?

or you just gonna relax, chill & enjoy the new region& new pokemon?

I am definitely, gonna just sit back& hopefully love the new region, and all there is to do in it ^_^
I know EV training is important for compeetitive play blah blah blah, ill wait til after play threw the storyline a couple dozen times :P

Eurydice June 19th, 2010 12:38 AM

i never ev. i dont understand it and what i do understand it sounds boring. so i will just train my pokemon and have fun playing the game

Katie_Q June 19th, 2010 12:45 AM

Never ev. Sounds boring to me, not really my thing. I'm not into wi-fi battling. So i'll be going through the game having fun, exploring, checking out the new pokemon etc

enderalex June 19th, 2010 12:50 AM

im going to play through and beat the crap out of it, then im going to EV the crap out of my pokemon :p its what i normally do ahaha

Essence June 19th, 2010 12:51 AM

Going to find a way to make Cherrim own everyone through th whole game. Then, restart and fun play the game. Then restart again, do a challenge through it and keep that file :) It's usually what I do.

Volroc June 19th, 2010 12:55 AM

Not as awesome as the mighty BIDOOF :D
jk ;)
but yea also, i may ev train a pokemon i catch later on in the game before i beat it cuz i did that in heart gold and it seemed to work out pretty good :)

austin00081 June 19th, 2010 1:08 AM

EV training takes too much of an effort sometimes. I enjoy playing leisurely.

Myles June 19th, 2010 1:21 AM

What do you mean 'or'? :P

But, yeah, on my first playthrough I don't usually EV train. That's post-league stuff.

Scales June 19th, 2010 1:27 AM

I tend to think it's for obsessive compulsives, that can't transition to another game.

Anyway, I am just going to play it for fun. No reason to break the immersion of an RPG

LethalTexture June 19th, 2010 1:37 AM

I just catch Pokémon as they are for the in-game portion and raise them as equals. As has been said, if I were to EV train, that would be post-league breeding frenzy.

SargeantMajorKururu June 19th, 2010 2:30 AM

I have never EVed. And I am a huge fan. I don't get it either. I always just sit back and play the games...

countryemo June 19th, 2010 3:08 AM

Whats EV? Shows how much i know xD

Im just gonna sit back and enjoy the game, play through.

Ninja Caterpie June 19th, 2010 3:19 AM

Who bothers EVing during the game, ah? I sure wouldn't. =| It's way too boring and tedious to bother. I'll just rush through the region taking in the sights and sounds (particularly the sounds!) and play through it the fun way.

Although, with your title, it makes it sound as if EV training is the opposite of fun. "Have fun...or EV TRAIN!"

JAK3 June 19th, 2010 3:21 AM

I don't even know how to do it, but if I did, I still will never do it. So, that's my answer, I will NEVER EV.

seeker June 19th, 2010 4:08 AM

I don't think I've ever done EV's throughout playing the storyline of a game, but I could be wrong. I tend not to worry about having to train my team in such a way as it's sort of pointless given the fact that you don't need to. So I'll be sticking with old fashioned training anywhere to ensure my team is strong enough to beat the next gym routine. Besides, it'd be hard to EV train if you hadn't visited enough places yet.

Rengoku June 19th, 2010 4:29 AM

EV is alien language to me :P
I never do it.

The Doctor June 19th, 2010 4:38 AM

I dont EV train at all since i have almost no clue how to.

I just play for fun

angel June 19th, 2010 4:46 AM

I'm going to play for fun. Probally do what I normally do, go through the game aand after beating Elite Four I run around and fill up my pokedex and level up my team.
I've never understood EV. My brother has tried to teach me a couple times I never got it. So I special breed pokemon instead.

lionrt60 June 19th, 2010 4:46 AM

rush the game, ev train:Pbut maybe not this time...idk

Winged Guardian June 19th, 2010 4:56 AM

EVs? i dont understand them and they sound boring. ill just quietly play the game me own way, then let whatever happens happen. i just enjoy the game.

Her June 19th, 2010 5:04 AM

I've never EV'd in any game of Pokemon ever and I certainly don't plan to start now.

A Pixy June 19th, 2010 5:15 AM

Fun, I've always done that and it's always been fun. (b")b

shengar June 19th, 2010 5:53 AM

Ev'd all of my Pokemon. I'm traumatized saw my beloved Meganium had 154 attack stat while its spec attack only 120. Since then seeing my pokemon growth properly=fun. EV training not that bad in my opinion, its add little fun for me. I also have Pokerus in my platinum, it will be a bit foolish if i'm not ev'd train my pokemon. But never do breeding, nature, IV, or anything random like that.

TheAppleFreak June 19th, 2010 6:14 AM

I'm going to play through the game once for fun, get the hang of Isshu, learn about the new 100+ Pokémon in it, then restart and do a challenge.

polkop June 19th, 2010 7:14 AM

I will play the storyline for fun and relax (I don't care about IV, EV or even nature, just fun :))
Once I have done the storyline many times, I will start to build some nice competitive team with the new pokemon.

Waki Tobaye June 19th, 2010 7:57 AM

I'm gonna play with whatever Pokémon I like on the first run (Black)
On my second run (White, on AK2i) I'm gonna Nuzlocke it.
And then on my original Black, I'm going to start making competitive teams.

MistahDude June 19th, 2010 8:58 AM

How are you going to play the 5th Gen Games?

I don't know about you guys but I am going to catch and train every pokemon I find on my very first play through of the 5th generation games. That way I can see which pokemon are better from my own experiences.

I usually just catch the first pokemon I find and use them, but I wanted to do something different.

What are you guys going to do when you play the 5th gen games?

pokefan1211 June 19th, 2010 9:09 AM

i'm gonna try all starters and catch the coolest looking ones, and the weirdest looking ones :D

Sora's Nobody June 19th, 2010 9:19 AM

Well when its a first of one of the games i go as in-depth as i can! So i will talk to every person, get every pokemon (available) ect... But whe a third of the games come, i usually just progress through the story, only catching pokemons that are nesceasarry to proceed

Myles June 19th, 2010 9:27 AM

I'm planning on playing it the catch and train tons of Pokemon, as opposed to a team of six, this time. That way I'll learn about the new Pokemon faster.

enderalex June 19th, 2010 9:56 AM

yea im going to do it differently, ill probably switch to a new team every gym or so to keep things fresh :) though ill do some things the same like catch every pokemon i see that's not in my pokedex :p

redsaber5859 June 19th, 2010 10:13 AM

all i can say is... beat the game by monopokemoning (zoruak, the starters are sh*t) then import all of my gen 4 pokemon (hopefully they have a pal park type thing) restart gen 4 games, import, restart import, and my pokemon Black version will be EXTREME!

mondays suck June 19th, 2010 10:16 AM

Nuzlocke Mode. Just Nuzlocke mode. The best of all existing playing forms in my opinion.

Volroc June 19th, 2010 10:26 AM

im glad to see a bunch of players who just wanna have fun :D i was worried thered be only a handful lol ^_^

i unintentionally EV my pokemon threwout the storyline, usually maxin out speed lol

Guy Buttersnaps June 19th, 2010 10:34 AM

Ya, the idea is to do both. You play through the game regularly and when you're done and have beaten it, then you worry about EV training and getting a team or two ready for competitive battling. They're not mutually exclusive.

shookie June 19th, 2010 10:39 AM

I'm into EV-training and natures and IVs and all that junk, but I've never EV-trained when trying to play through the first time o_O it takes too much time and it's not like the gyms or Elite Four ever require that much effort.

I'll just do what I always do with the games: get through the storyline and fart around for a while. It entirely depends on what features Black and White will include and what will differ from the other games. I'm used to having Platinum as my RNG/breeding/EV hub and it works out fine, so there's no real need to change it. /shrug

Arc June 19th, 2010 11:05 AM

Fun. I may be a competitive battler, but EV training through out the game the first time is pretty much impossible, especially if we don't know what EV the new Pokemon give off. So, I will be just cruising through the game with fun~

Jake♫ June 19th, 2010 11:18 AM

I always just play through normally, but when they crack the (inevitable) random number generator in the game...time for breeding =D

560cool. June 19th, 2010 11:30 AM

I never EV. o_O
I'll just play through the game (1-2 weeks I guess ?) and then start training another batch of Pokemon (not EVing) to show my brother I still own him in Pokemon after 6 years ! xD

Blueknight June 19th, 2010 11:42 AM

I never EV train during story mode. I usually just sit back and chill.

But after the storyline, I usually complete pokedex, and then If I want to EV train, I will.

Grim Reminder June 19th, 2010 12:01 PM

As for me, I'll probably stick to my usual strategy, I'll stick with a consistent team of 6 until
I beat the Elite Four (assuming Black/White has them) and then I'll catch more Pokemon and do random side quests. That's how I've done it for as long as I can remember.

JackGamer June 19th, 2010 12:04 PM

I never EV train. I don't really understand it, but it doesn't appeal to me, I just play for fun :D

halamence June 19th, 2010 12:07 PM

I will not EV.
Well I'll go through the game like "la leee daaa a fun strool" (OK I won't!)
I usually only EV rarely when I've beaten the game.
So fun for me...

Esmas June 19th, 2010 12:42 PM

Well I always play through a game just having fun, enjoying all of the wonderful things in the game, but I make sure that each and every Pokémon on my team has a perfect nature. When I'm done the game I'll just reset their EVs with berries and EV train them once I've unlocked all of the game's locations XD; For me, training a Pokémon to Lv. 100 without properly training it seems like a waste...at least, for good-natures Pokémon o3o

Corruptodile June 19th, 2010 12:51 PM

I am probably going to, as I'll be very unsure on what EV's would be best, play for fun the first time round. Afterwards I'll probably look at stats and choose ideal natures and appropiate EV's second time and onwards. =)

PiPVoda June 19th, 2010 1:09 PM

The same way I play all of my games: explore every single corner of every town/city/forest/route, catch all the new pokemon, and train my pokemon like crazy. I feel like the first game in a new generation is special and so it should have your greatest number of pokemon, and most powerful ones, on it.

Angelroid June 19th, 2010 3:02 PM

Get my starter and train Pokemon for my team, And go everywhere in the game.

Golden Heart June 19th, 2010 4:47 PM

Fun! Duh. c:
I don't like EV training since the beginning. -.-

o0PinkSquid0o June 19th, 2010 5:36 PM

I Don't really understand how to EV Train Pokemon, I am slowly learning though... so I think the first playthrough I will do for fun, just to really enjoy the game, and the second play through, once I've experienced the whole game, I will try to ev train or do things more technical etc.

southharmon June 19th, 2010 5:49 PM

i always just play the games for fun mainly because that's my favorite thing about pokemon and i barely ev train after i've beat the game anyways

Pokeyomom June 19th, 2010 5:56 PM

I'll most likely get gen 1 pokes as soon as possible:D Then, I will proceed to beat the stuffins out of all the new pokes. That's the plan, man.

southharmon June 19th, 2010 5:57 PM

by the time the english games come out we will have obtained info on all of the different pokemon so i may pick my team of six based with the new info and of course i will use pokemon i think look cool

Astinus June 19th, 2010 6:02 PM

I always play through the storyline first before I think about EV training. It's harder to control what Pokemon the one you're EV training will battle when you don't know what a trainer has, or what the Pokemon are in a wild area.

Besides, EV training gives me something to do after the storyline, so the game isn't "finished" as soon as I "win".

Yes. I Agree as well. I might not do that on my Restart file, to get off some load, so yeah...

Hamilton June 19th, 2010 6:46 PM

same as always- the 3 Game rule
i'll start the first game with the grass starter and just try to go through the game
second i'll pick water and go through getting as many pokemon as i can
third is fire and i get items and talk to everyone i see

mustafa505 June 19th, 2010 8:12 PM

i will first check every setting of the game and then play it nicely

Le Creep! June 19th, 2010 8:18 PM

I'm going to catch the Chinchilla Pokémon after getting my starter and a few others. I absolutely love it!

But, I will search every nook and cranny, and find lots of items. Hopefully they will have some new items.

smellybellysrock June 19th, 2010 8:20 PM

I'm going to get a bunch of rare pokemon, and breed, and sell. And collect shinies.

Ash&pikachuarethebest June 20th, 2010 2:37 AM

I'm gonna catch every single Pokemon on the game and train all the ones i like the look of so i can keep changing my team and then once I have finished the game I'm gonna breed all my Pokemon and EV train the ones I want to have for my online battling teams.

Lol, there already has been a time capsule as like in Gen II confirmed. (From Serebii.net)

Lol I do the same thing, just sort of switched around. I try to match the pokemon to the legendary (Or the pokemon on the cover, in Firered's case)

I plan to hunt down every pokemon, and keep the epic ones in my party. I'm gonna look everywhere for the new items, Talk to everyone, and get pwned by the elite four on my first try, then pwn them my second (Assuming there is a Elite four, there usually is.).

Katie_Q June 20th, 2010 3:06 AM

on white I'll go through catching and training random pokemon. Then when I'm finished that, I'll do a fire mono type on black to continue on from heart gold. and then in the third game, well i'll decide in maybe another year or two.

BridZworld June 20th, 2010 3:52 AM

I'll just train 8/9 Pokemon to be a bit more versatile, and probably catch anything else on the way, and once I beat the elite four? I will probably go with a new team ;)

This is what I usually do but this time I'm going to catch every single Pokemon I see and then keep switching my team around until I'm satisfied, then grind grind grind baby!

JackGamer June 20th, 2010 10:21 AM

I shall catch every Pokemon I see, talk to every trainer, explore every part of the region :D That's the best way to play, imo.

i'll probably just go through normally. It's a clean slate so i just want to experience the story going through the game. I want to take my time though. No beating the story within the first 30 hrs.!!!

twinsandvikes777 June 20th, 2010 2:01 PM

I think I'm going to try and catch every pokemon that has three stages (so I can evolve more >O<) and destroy every legendary!!!

pichuspark June 20th, 2010 2:27 PM

Probably use the starter Pokemon until I get Zorua (probably not, I'm gonna choose Tsutaja!) and TRY to not use a Master Ball until I see a roaming legendary I want...

Planetes. June 20th, 2010 3:27 PM

Beast through the game with my starter, and a pokemon with 3 stages that you can catch early than get the legendary and the game's "dragon" and train them.

another fun way to play other than Nuzlocke, is called Motley.

Basically you kind of make your team like Ash's and only 2 fully evolved PKMN are allowed no legendaries, and you are allowed an extra non-evolving pokemon, but multiple non-evolves are counted as the 2 fully evolved.

Here's an example team from my Motley run in LG

Pikachu
Snorlax
Charizard
Lapras
Dragonair
Machoke

pokecommunist June 20th, 2010 11:15 PM

I'm going to try the minimalist approach and blaze through the game. I won't reset for any reason, like killing a legendary or whiting out.

PiPVoda June 21st, 2010 6:15 PM

Probably fun at first, then as I get further in the game and know what my final team will be I'll get into EV. I'm still new to it, and frankly it doesn't seem worthwhile..but I'm still gonna do it.

MistahDude June 21st, 2010 6:20 PM

I wont EV or IV train until I get wifi.

cystar June 21st, 2010 6:43 PM

fun ev goes l8er ev is no fun

myrrh25 June 22nd, 2010 2:06 AM

I'll do it the way I've done all of my Pokemon games since RSE.

1. 8 Badges.
2. Defeat the Elite Four + Champion.
3. Send over my EV trained Pokemon.
4. EV train some next gen Pokemon.

Now since we can do this:
5. Upload my SAV file to the internet.
6. Keep my EV trained SAV file on the internet.
7. Start game again so I can do Nuzlocke and Monotype challenges, without losing my team.

Cruelty And The Beast June 22nd, 2010 2:12 AM

I won't EV train until I've had a leisurely run through the game, I don't see the point. For me when you're trying to play through a game EV training is too much hassle.

SkieTheKitsune June 22nd, 2010 7:04 AM

As I've just gotten into EV training last year (thanks to HeartGold and SoulSilver having such easy places to train), I'll definitely be doing it again with Black and White. Of course, I'd have to play through the game first before I do so.

Air Pichu June 22nd, 2010 7:06 AM

I always like to beat the game first, then EV Train lots of Pokemon for more fun. :)

Migueliscool June 22nd, 2010 8:02 AM

I will play it and when I pass it I MIGHT EV train. I also might EV train a few levels as I go through the storyline. Just not that much though

dieter57 June 22nd, 2010 8:16 AM

now i feel completely stupid, but i never actually new what EV stands for.

jigglyppuff8 June 22nd, 2010 8:18 AM

Playing for fun! Anyone who EV trains for the MAIN campaign obviously takes Pokemon WAY too seriously.

Digital Wings June 22nd, 2010 9:48 AM

I like EV training. I'll EV train after I finish the storyline so I can breed for natures and moves and make an awesome 5th gen team for Wifi. :D

EDIT: EV stands for Effort Values. Every Pokemon you defeat adds to a certain stat. Pidgey adds to 1 EV to Speed, Luxray adds 3 EVs to Attack.

You can have 512 EVs, and a max of 255 in any stat. So you can pretty much max two stats if you want to by training on only a certain kind of Pokemon.

That's why rare candy doesn't make them stronger -- because they don't gain EVs, just levels.

They gain the stats upon level up, so you can't EV train a level 100 Poke, but you can EV train a level 99 poke whos EVs you've lowered with EV reducing berries.

Storm_has_formed June 22nd, 2010 9:58 AM

well fun for me first, but I'm gonna have to include EVing eventually, probably after the main story, if I'm gonna play in random matches!!!

HugSomebody June 22nd, 2010 9:59 AM

I always play for fun. ^.^ I might give EV training a try after I beat B/W and all that's to it, but that won't be for a while anyway.

Agent Clank June 22nd, 2010 10:04 AM

I never EV either.
I'm going to play for fun, relax and enjoy the sights of the new region.

Ru June 22nd, 2010 10:07 AM

The only thing I'm going to care about during my run through is Natures for me Team. After I enjoyed the region and everything, maybe then I'll settle down to EV train and such and finally learn the concept of IVs.

Bluerang1 June 22nd, 2010 10:35 AM

FUN! How do people even? I don't have hours of my life to waste.

Tox June 22nd, 2010 10:44 AM

But EV training is fun. D:

Nah, well first I'll play through the game doing my best not to start hating on my Pokémon if their natures are bad. Then, when I'm after running out of things to do, I'll resort to EV training and IV breeding whatever I can. Yay.

Trap-Eds June 22nd, 2010 11:01 AM

Fun. I don't have WiFi anyway. :cer_boogie:

xPsychosocial June 22nd, 2010 11:05 AM

I don't ev train until I've completed the main story. I prefer to play through the game without worrying about natures, ev's and iv's when I first get it.

Eeohnex June 22nd, 2010 11:06 AM

The only thing that I'm going to have in mind are going to be the Natures. I'm going to enjoy the new region with the new Pokémon as much as possible and have a blast through the storyline. After I have completed the game, I will start EV training, IV breeding and all that good stuff.

dieter57 June 22nd, 2010 11:51 AM

i'll just use zinc and all those good stat helpers in the game.

EmeraldSerenade June 22nd, 2010 11:52 AM

Both, but I only EV/IV train and care about the natures after I beat the game ^^

Fightback June 22nd, 2010 11:55 AM

I really don't ever EV. If i need to battle against like, people i know in real life. I'll Just fckin hack my pokemon so i don't have to do all that much effort. I DON'T EVER HACK IN COMPETITIVE PLAY. Just to note :P, only with people i know in real life.

Back on Topic. I'm gonna play casually. Train a lil' bit. But not really like, EV the crap outta my pokémon, did that in Diamond.

But Imma be training some new Pokémon to 100. Trade 'em over to Diamond xD. And not tell my Friends I Have both games. They'll never see that coming :)

Jerme June 22nd, 2010 12:38 PM

i play for fun. i dont ev, but i do care about the nature. thats why i dont play online much. well now that i know theres others like me, would you like to have a fair battle sometime?

Nikorasu June 22nd, 2010 12:48 PM

Fun i NEVER EV train on my first playthrough. NEVEREVEREVER!
Ev is boring as... It just makes you own all pokemon trainers

i will play the game for fun

I'm planning on playing through the Japanese version first normally and having fun, but once I beat the game I will start EV training a 5th geberation team.

When I get and English version I'll just have fun and maybe only trade EV trained Pokemon over if I wnt to try competative.

I find EV training too boring so I guess I'll just play through for the fun :P
