I once lost to a trainer whose only pokemon was a magikarp in Red. I was on my way to a pokecenter with my enter team fainted, and the last one poisoned and on his death bed with no helpful supplies. I had just enough steps to get there too, except I forgot I passed over a fisherman on my travels and was caught in a battle. Both hyper fang attacks from my raticate missed, the magikarp used tackle twice and I lost....seriously, fml

Mewtwo152 July 2nd, 2010 8:55 PM

That happened to me. Only the Magikarp used Splash. And I used a level 100 Charizard. I was trying to see how long it would take to KO him through poisoned walking , and my Hyper Beam missed.
When a Heracross resisted 12 Ultra Balls with 1 hit point, and was asleep, when I caught it in a Poke Ball.

Le Creep! July 2nd, 2010 10:27 PM

When I battled a person named ''Bugsy''. Seriously, wtf?

Mewtwo152 July 3rd, 2010 5:05 AM

Fighting Whitney's Miltank. It kept making my Machop flinch with Rollout, and if I didn't flinch the Low Kick I was trying to use would miss. When it finally hits, it doesn't KO Miltank. Miltank uses Milk Drink, and this goes on and on and on.

Talking to this little random dude at what I figured was maybe halfway through Mt. Silver, only to have it turn out to be Red with a bunch of lv. 70s. Oopsie.

GOD DAMN MILKTANK. Almost everytime I play Crystal (except recently I started again and used ghastly on her ass) I lose to her.

Any way.

Realizing I have grinded my pokemon to levels so high that I need a new gym badge :S

myrrhman July 5th, 2010 7:45 AM

I was headbutting trees to catch all the tree Pokemon one night and SHINY PINECO APPEARS!!! OH BOY! PUT IT TO SLEEP GENGAR!!! misses. Pineco uses selfdestruct on my Gengar! WTF?

Also, I was doing a Mewtwo only run in the Elite Four, and I was running low on attacks (I needed to save my Ice Beams for Lance, etc.) so I used Metronome on Agatha's last Gengar. It was Explosion... sigh.

This happens so often when trying to train a togepi!

LOL

mine was trying to get through Ice Path between Mahogany & Blackthorn. I seriously spent hours trying to get through the huge plot of ice to figure out how to get to the other side. I had no revives or potions & my team fainted before I got out. I had to maneuver that ice again.

My WTF moments:

Catching Mew
- I was always intimidated by the process, but after doing it for the first time (just about an hour ago, w00t!), I found that it was extremely easy to follow and execute. Even the catch was easy, I caught him in one Great Ball.

Manual PC Boxes
- I was so used to automatic PC box switching from the newer generations, that I was surprised and frustrated when I couldn't use a Pokeball with a full box (do you have any idea how rare an Onix is in Rock Tunnel?!). At least it happened before I encountered a legendary.

The Unknown Ghost
- As a child, this thing always scared me, but today I encountered it and... alright, it frightened me a bit. I was caught off guard and expected a Gastly or something!

Sceptile0111 July 8th, 2010 5:50 PM

Oh dear GOD the unknown ghost! As a kid I was so dead scared of those things... :(

Also, finding out that the Missingno trick actually worked. I remember being in 3rd grade and having a friend tell me about this crazy-sounding ridiculous way to get infinite master balls or rare candies and totally not believing him. Then I finally tried it, not expecting anything to happen...HOLY **** IT WORKED!

:t254: Sceptile0111 :t254:

I just did the same on Red about two weeks ago. I'm twenty years old, and I was still creeped out by my start button turning on by itself, even though I knew it was going to happen (although, it might've been fear of having my game crash, which some people claim to have happened to them.)

But I used a combination of Bulbasaur's leechseed with Butterfree's sleep powder and slowlydrained it's health before catching it with a pokeball....I wasn't far enough to get a great ball.

XxRogueTrainerxX July 8th, 2010 6:32 PM

A wild Zubat appeared!

Go, Cyndaquil!

The wild Zubat used Supersonic!

Cyndaquil is confused!

It hurt itself in confusion!

*happens over and over*

ORegan July 8th, 2010 6:40 PM

Wild Jigglypuff appears.

sent out out bulbasaur. Jigglypuff used sing. Switched to Spearow. Jigglypuff used sing. went down my line-up and the damn thing put every single one to sleep. I'm guessing it didn't know pound, because it would only use sing. Even when my pokemon woke up, it was put right back to sleep. Ten minutes went by before it missed and I had a chance to make an attack.

Maverick Hunter Zero July 8th, 2010 9:51 PM

Hmm...so many wtf moments...

I mean, the first real one was the first time I ever played Pokemon Red as a kid, showing up to the first gym and noticing it was Brock.

My thoughts -
"Alright! Its Brock from the show! He's the Rock trainer...wait..."
*checks his Pokemon Party*
"Charmander...Pidgey...Rattata...Caterpie...Nidoran Male...WTF!? These guys can't beat rock types!"

And that's when I learned what grinding was all about...

Emlam July 9th, 2010 6:40 AM

Charmander can *so* beat Brock. :P
But Charmeleon does beat him better. And there's a whole forest of bugs to level him up on. :D
Speaking of, I remember when I first realized, after getting it to like lv 40, that Beedrill was a terrible Pokemon. -_-;

Butterfree can fair better against Brock after you teach it confusion. :P

But yes, Beedrill is pretty useless when facing 2nd or 3rd evolutions.

I didn't know this when I was eight and lost to brock about six times because ember wasn't working too well. :(

Beedrill is a terrible Pokemon in Pokemon Red. It got better though what with new moves and TMs.

I evolved my Growlithe after I caught it and I was leveling it up in Diglett's Cave (great place to level, btw). I was up to level 35 or something and I was wondering why it wasn't learning anything. I checked it up online and saw the Arcanine didn't learn any moves, I was mad. I wasted my Dig TM on it too...

I then began to train another Growlithe, it learns Flamethrower at level 50.

Heart's Soul July 9th, 2010 1:05 PM

Having Pokemon Yellow with a lv. 17 Pikachu (early on) and facing off Brock. With Pikachu. The anime lies, no electric attack can hurt Brock! So, I spammed Quick Attack and won.

Later on, I caught Mew. Saved and tried again by battling a Gambler this time. I got a Missingno. Took me 5 tries to get the battle to actually execute without freezing.

WAAAY later on, by using my Hitmonchan with Metronome, I go against Gary. He has his last Pokemon and so do I. (Hitmonchan, poor wording) Anyway, I use Metronome. Splash. He has Ninetales, so it sucks. Does near nothing to me. I use Metronome again. Splash. He used Tail Whip (told you) and I use Metronome a third time! It was Bubble. And it missed. He used Quick Attack with a critical hit. Half of my Max HP gone. I won in the end.

Caught 143 on Red.

Cousin plays it, starts a new game, saves...

JAK3 July 10th, 2010 1:34 AM

Yesterday, I finally got my long awaited Pokemon Gold version. I was excited beyond believe. When I received it, I popped it in my Gameboy SP, and started it up, went through all the Oak stuff, blah, blah, blah. So when I was in my room, I saved. I turned the game back on right after I shut it off.

Save file is Corrupt.

...

:disappoin Now I have to fix it..

The moment that made me almost cry as a kid:

My Pokemon Red, with my completed game and my tournament winning Pokemon on it, started to glitch. I figured it was dust... Now mind you, I'm only 10, so I had no idea that this was a REALLY stupid idea... So I attempted to clean it with a ear swab and some ALCOHOL... Ruined my game forever. I still have that dead cartridge.

Oh my beautiful homegrown non-hacked level 100's, how I miss you.

RIP Snorlax, Kabutops, Jolteon, Haunter, Charizard, and Gyarados... ;_;

I lost all my memory when I put my game near a speaker for some reason O.o

Emlam July 17th, 2010 2:39 PM

First playthrough of Silver with little knowledge of how things worked ... needed another Pokemon with Attract so I left a male Togetic with Attract and a female Pikachu at the Daycare.

First egg, I accidentally hit B instead of A. Refused the egg. >_<
Left them in the daycare - after a very long time I finally realized it had been wayyyy longer than the last egg took, so I went to pick up my 'Mons and then put them back in daycare to "reset."

Togetic had gained like 13 levels (I'd forgotten he was such a low level) and managed to forget *all* of his old attacks. D:
Shut off the game and ran off in a huff.
Realized I could probably trade the old Togetic from a previous saved game I'd stored elsewhere, but could not for the life of me get TGB Dual to function properly.

And so the game still sits there, with me too bummed-out to use it again. :P

My moment had to be when I beat the Indigo Plateu for the 5th time, and won with a Caterpie that had one health left.

TheNewRocketMovement July 21st, 2010 6:13 PM

Clair not giving me the Rising badge after beating her

I've played crystal three times, never shiny...
I have real bad luck XD

Ruin Maniac July 23rd, 2010 10:12 AM

Never ever legitimately recieved a shiny starter for any professor. After 3 years of missing Crystal, i finally found it and obtained a shiny cyndaquil

Mayfan24 July 23rd, 2010 4:32 PM

Pokemon Yellow, I was in Cerulean Cave and came across a Golbat

Wild GOLBAT appeared!
Go! VEE!
VEE used BITE!
GOLBAT uses CONFUSE RAY!
VEE is now confused!
VEE is confused!
VEE hurt itself in confusion!
GOLBAT used HAZE!
All STATUS changes are eliminated!
*repeat two or three times*
Wild GOLBAT fainted!

seriously if the GOLBAT is gonna confuse me, leave me confused or leave me alone

The Shiny Psyduck July 23rd, 2010 4:59 PM

Mine would be when I was battling chuck and the fight got down to his last pokemon vs. my low level (somewhere from 5 to 15, I don't really remember) togepi and a tentacool I had just caught. Metronome turned into perish song, and I managed to live through the three turns... phew.

iNinja July 23rd, 2010 8:36 PM

It took forever trying to figure out how to beat Brock on Pokemon Yellow the first time I played it. Back when I had 0 pokemon skillz.

Mankey and the Nidos are perfect really, they learn Fighting attacks. :D

Weavile05 July 24th, 2010 5:08 PM

I was playing through yellow on an emulator just for kicks, deleted low kick on my mankey for karate chop to find out it was a normal type move in that game (I'd never played yellow before)... WWWWTTTTTFFFF?!

Emlam July 24th, 2010 6:14 PM

That never made the slightest bit of sense to me. >.< I was so relieved when they changed it over to Fighting - of course then I kept getting KOed because I forgot I couldn't send Rock Pokemon up against it anymore. O_O

Weavile05 July 24th, 2010 6:22 PM

Why in the world was it ever normal anyway?

TheNewRocketMovement July 25th, 2010 1:46 AM

I have no idea why it was a normal type move, I'm pretty sure Gust was as well, some of the move types back then made no sense.

Lynx93 July 25th, 2010 2:36 AM

My WTF moment was when I tried to pass sudowoodo in Crystal. I didn't planned to catch it, but when I entered the battle... It was SHINY, I didn't had any pokeball with me -_-' And since then I always buy Pokeballs in case if I meet rare or shiny one (not that I like to use them, just to have it).

Edit: Not only Karate Chop and Gust were Normal back then, but also Sand Attack and Bite.

lol, that sucks. Things like that happened to me so often back then. Now I always carry an abundance of PokeBalls with me on my journey.

omg, I went back to Red and remembered that GUST was normal, training Pidgey got a tad more difficult and I was no longer looking forward to Viridian Forrest. But then I caught a Pikachu and I was all better :D

Emlam July 25th, 2010 7:53 AM

I felt Bite made more sense being Normal, actually, though it's nice to have it as a Dark attack. Sand Attack ... didn't really matter to me 'cuz it does no damage. :P
Gust was annoying, yeah.

*wants a shiny Sudowoodo now*

*thinks about how inappropriate Sudowoodo looked before it attacked and you saw the sprite*

This could have happened to me, I was in The Lost Tower a few weeks ago, the screen flashed as it does when a wild Pokemon appears (Which annoyed me at the time) and then, a green Zubat appeared, luckily I had a nice number of Poke balls on me =D

Thats only the second time (Excluding the red Gyarados) I've encountered a shiny in the wild, the other one was a shiny Machop on Fire Red, stupidly I forgot I had it and restarted my game without trading it over =[

Anyhoo, lesson learned, always carry Pokeballs, I can only imagine how much I would kick myself if I bumped into a wild shiny and didn't have any Pokeballs on me.

Another WTF moment

shininglatios217 July 26th, 2010 11:01 AM

Buying a bootleg Pokémon Silver that has the worst translation in history!

Example: The MONEYPOT is in Room 32.

Seriously, WHAT WAS THAT?

mal'akh July 26th, 2010 3:42 PM

Well, I had a weird Quilava. Not design, but move. After training it for a while it learned Flame Wheel. I was excited to use the new move, so I battled the next wild Pokemon I saw with it, which was a Geodude. I used the move, and was amazed. After a few months and me restarting a couple of new games, I decided to get another Quilava. I taught it Flame Wheel went the opportunity came, and found something different about it. The first time I ever learned Flame Wheel, it was exactly that. I wheel of fire rolled from my Quilava's sprite, and hit the other Pokemon. When I got it the second time, my Quilava twirled around and tackled the Pokemon. Turns out, the tackle was what was supposed to happen. Really made me say "wtf".

Another was on my Sapphire. I can barely remember (for all I know it could have beena dream), but when I first got it, I was real young, and I was so excited to get it. I remember catching a Ralts, shiny, Level.5, and it knew Growl and Confusion right off the back.

MasterSceptile July 27th, 2010 1:06 PM

A fews years back, I booted up my Gold version (with about 230 Pokémon) only to find "New Game and Options", the file died, so I turned on my Silver version (which I got on the same day from the same guy) only to find the same! WTF!!!, both games died at the same time? So I bought Crystal 2 days after and pulled an all-nighter to beat it (Its PokéDex is done! Except no Celebi.)

When i fought and accidently defeated the kyogre and latias in my pokemon sapphire. Both times my sister saved after they fainted.
Then, in the same game, after i raised a bunch of my pokemon to lv.100, without hacking, my sister started a new game and saved so she could recatch kyogre and latias.
Also, in pokemon platinum, when i sped through the entire game in one week so i could do the darkrai event, only to find out, on the last two days of the event, that my WiFi didn't work.

Just rooted out my old Game Boy Pocket and Yellow Version. Decided to play through it for old time's sake. In Viridian Forest, the first Pokemon I encountered was a Pidgeotto :) Level 9. Another was on my Sapphire. I can barely remember (for all I know it could have beena dream), but when I first got it, I was real young, and I was so excited to get it. I remember catching a Ralts, shiny, Level.5, and it knew Growl and Confusion right off the back.

Wrong section, pal.

Also, Lance was a great WTF moment, but the spinning wheel on Quilava? I had that too! On Crystal, whenever Quilava had Flame Wheel (more than once) it was a spinning rod of fire that attacked the enemy.

Also, capturing Mew in Yellow. At level 7.

One of my first wtf moments was when I noticed Karate Chop was a normal type move. and learning Bugsy was a guy. XD

Another one was a long time ago. It was my first Red save and I had 146 pokemon in the pokedex. I let my older sister play it for an hour and she apparently starts a new game and saves. She thought there was multiple save files. I nearly cried. (Team: Charizard, Pidgeot, Raichu, Primeape, Dugtrio, and Snorlax. all were level 100... I think, Raichu might have been a tad lower.)

Grammatically correct- "I had a WTF moment in Crystal. I was fighting Lance and I had my Golem remaining. It was at full health, and it was fighting his Charizard. It used Wing Attack and KO'd my Golem. Was it a hack?"

Here's the answer- Charizard has a high attack stat, plus STAB from Wing Attack, making it do 1.5x the normal damage. Even though Golem has a high defense and the fact that the attack should only do 0.5x damage, it technically does 0.75x the normal rate. If Charizard has a significantly higher attack rate and you neglected defense EVs/IVs, then Charizard could easily KO your Golem.

But this ...wait, what? :\

Kura August 11th, 2010 1:35 PM

My WTF moment was when I taught my Gyrados fly in Red version.. (I specifically remember using it for ages because I didn't like any Bird Pokemon.)

And.. I found out years later that Gyarados can't actually learn fly in that game .__. Wonky script?

shininglatios217 August 11th, 2010 1:40 PM

One that happened in my bootleg Silver:

"UNOWN used TEA study!"

Those pirates fail at translating.

Zukdeen August 12th, 2010 3:51 PM

Playing Pokémon Crystal. 1st time against Lance, I had my team of 5 Trained Pokémon and I forgot I had Dratini with Extremespeed in 6th slot.

So I started fighting.
*minutes after that*

Last Pokémon of Lance, his Dragonair, Last Trained Pokémon of mine, Typhlosion...
Typhlosion used <I can't remember the attack>
Dragonair: 1HP left
Dragonair used Hyper Beam
Typhlosion fainted.

And then, OMG I still have a Pokémon left!
Send Dratini. Uses Extremespeed

AND HE SAVES ME OMG WTF IS THIS, A LV15 DRATINI THAT I JUST GOT WON ME THE POKÉMON LEAGUE.

Of course, he won like 5 lvls.

Bad luck now my Crystal doesn't work :(

I have a bootleg Green version. It's kind of weird.

The Who? August 15th, 2010 4:19 PM

I hadn't saved in a while, and I was in that weird tower psychic people place on Sapphire, when I came down to my gastly. None of my moves effected they're misdreavus and they're moves didn't effect me. I was like -_-.

Kanto_Johto August 16th, 2010 11:26 AM

A big WTF for me - In my R/B/Y games, some of the trainers seem to have Psychic powers. I had reached Lance on Yellow. My last Pokemon was Tauros and his was Dragonite, and it went something like this:

My turn - Tauros used Thunderbolt.
Lance - Dragonite used Hyper Beam. Dragonite is hurt by Poison.
My Turn - Tauros used Thunderbolt.
Lance - Dragonite has to recharge. Dragonite is hurt by Poison.
My Turn - Tauros used Thunderbolt (by this time, Dragonite is one attack/Poison from fainting).
Lance - Lance used a Hyper Potion on Dragonite.

Me - WHAT? How the fudge do you use an item AFTER your opponent has attacked? I call BS.

Another one - Koga specialises in Poison types, right? In that case, why do all the trainers have Psychic and Ground types? Were the game makers high when they came onto this gym? "h3y Gu1s3 l3tS g1V3 t3h TrAiNoRz PsYcH1c tIp3z olololololololollololo".

Plenty of WTF moments in the Gen I games.

The one that calls Pikachu Bika and Spearow Machi?

mkgroudon91 August 16th, 2010 8:59 PM

My WTF moment was in Crystal. After booting up the pc in player's house, I decided to read some mails I stored earlier in the game. The game suddendly glitched, the graphics were all messed up, and then it resets itself, showing up a black and white Crystal title screen with the message "This game is meant to be played on a Game Boy Color" or something similiar.
And in my hands I held a Game Boy Color...such a trauma. :(

Right. So, that's what happens when you trick your GBC to thinking its a N64. Derp.

chanchimi August 23rd, 2010 10:04 PM

One day, quite a few years ago, I was playing my Red version. And for whatever reason, I was very upset. I ran into a Pidgey, and in anger, I smacked my Gameboy Color on the side, and I DECAPITATED THE PIDGEY!!! It's head flew off to the side, over it's health bar! The game continued working, too! I freaked out over it, and shut the game off.

Ooh! There was also this time when I first ran into a wild Machoke in Victory Road. I was so excited, and thought it was so cool.... I caught it with my only Masterball. >_> I never even ended up withdrawing it from the Box!

Kelp August 25th, 2010 5:28 PM

I followed the Mew cheat, and then wild Mew lv. 7 appeared.

I was like wtf this actually worked? xD

Inferny August 25th, 2010 8:48 PM

I was playing, running towards the northern part of Sinohh, when suddenly, a shiny Machoke level 36 appeared. Holy god, I was shocked, I had never met a shiny before! I sat there and told my brother about it while whittliing down it's HP, but suddenly I accidently tapped Run. Man.

BrandNew August 26th, 2010 3:18 PM

Oh dear, WTF moments... there are so many of them.

I remember my first run through Victory Road in Red, as I see this suspicious thing in a dead end. I talk to it and... BOOM, Moltres. I was so scared of it that I pressed RUN...

Also there's Lavender Town. The city that gives me bad dreams til now. This damn "BE BE BE BE"like musik didn't go out of my head and made me totally paranoid.
Then I made a big, big mistake. I went in Pokemon Tower, defeated Gary and... encounterd a GHOST. I was so scared I threw away my Gameboy and hid under my blanket for hours in settled conviction, if I came out now, GHOST would come to take me away.

Geez, kids do weird things.

Wha? Rollout shouldn't be able to make anything flinch.

SPOILER: It's fake though

cest la vie September 27th, 2010 1:17 AM

One thing I remember happening, though I don't believe it's possible ( maybe it was a dream? I dunno) was in yellow, I went into the route just before Celadon, my screen went black, started to play distorted Lavender town music for a while & i just stared at it for about a minute and then a ding sounded and the words something like the ship has arrived went on the screen, after I pressed A, the screen went back to normal but the music still played & I was scared so I turned the gameboy off, but I was upset afterwards, because I wanted to go to Vermilion to see what happened.

im like wtf, why dosnt ice beam KO it????

U.Flame October 27th, 2010 9:22 PM

You want to hear a WTF moment? A glitch gave me a sex change. I am now a female in Crystal! Details are in the Glitch Discussion thread.

icycatelf October 28th, 2010 9:50 AM

This one happened to me probably about 7 or so years ago. I was playing Red Version and had just caught Mewtwo, but I didn't have any Escape Ropes or Pokemon with Dig, so I had to find the way out myself. If I remember correctly, my battery was running low, so I saved the game. However, when I closed the menu, my character was standing on the rocks and couldn't move (except to face different directions). I turned the game off and back on, but he was still stuck. I was forced to reset my game. -_-

On Silver Version, I used the Cloning Glitch on a Chansey, but the clone's name changed to MIME...

WTF?

PKMwtfawesomeSAUCE November 10th, 2010 6:02 AM

My WTF moment.

Let me set the mood for you.

It was a beautiful day outside so i decided to stay in and play pokemon silver.
I sat down on my comfortable couch sipping on a glass of iced tea.
Turned on my GB Color (becasue at the time it was totally Awesome Sauce).
Aww sweet its that ever so familiar Lugia on the main screen.
Tap Tap
"ok lets load this up"
..... Staring at the screen for about 30 sec if not more hoping that the saved game file would magically appear.

My game with 100+ hours was erased.
Didn't end up restarting it for at least a month after that because i was so mad.

WTF right.

L5Animations November 10th, 2010 12:12 PM

Came across a random shiny Ursaring in Crystal. But the weird thing is, it was the FIRST Pokemon I came across in the Silver Cave. Not something you expect to happen right away, much less at all.
