New Years Update!

Alright, a new years update! Since I'm waiting for my mapper, I really couldn't do much progress, but this update will be key to the events in Chrome.

Flashback Greyscale

Recently I found out how to easily harness the greyscale from the "Previously on Your Journey" scene, and used it to make a greyscale flashback whenever I want! I also removed the previously on your journey thing because it was very buggy, and crashed my game a lot. Since screenshots don't show ASM real easily, I made a neat video!

oh I see you finally decided to put this in pokemon community.
I love how this hack is so brilliant I also love the d\n system and rtc included the animation. Good luck

giradialkia July 12th, 2010 1:27 PM

I like that you edited the DN Palettes so there're lights in the windows, but I think, if you haven't tried already, you should edit the palette of the door, too, so it has a light in it as well.
I also like that you're replacing the cries. It's not too big a deal to have, as you say, Charmander sounding Chimchars, but it's a nice touch. Good luck!

~NzFury July 12th, 2010 3:13 PM

this hack looks great!
i love the story so far, leaves the reader hanging.
good luck and i hope it gets finished.

vietazn654 July 12th, 2010 4:14 PM

OH! I thought it was already on PC because it looks so good. Looks like it was only on PHO? Anyways, nice to see the hack here now! ;D

Awesome July 12th, 2010 4:22 PM

The title screen looks a bit plain, but then again, it is just an image, it might have some cool animation in the background for all I know.
I don't really understand the 2nd part/paragraph of the storyline.
And I wish you good luck, screens look very nice.

The titlescreen was taken a bit too early. It does have an animation in the background. And in the second part, the magneton turns from a reflection into, well, an actual magneton. ;)

It was mostly because I couldn't stand hearing misplaced cries, such as Ruby Destiny, when they have the ultimate legendary, it's a doduo cry, which bugged me. :( I'm trying to edit the door at the moment, but it isn't a priority.

dragoniteuser July 13th, 2010 12:26 AM

It looks great, and the game seems to be very advanced (D/N system, all pokemon in FR hack, RTC clock in FR...) but the FRLG graphics kinda bug me.
I don't know why but this game looks great, and in my opinion 4th gen pokemon graphics (PDPt, HGSS) would suite it waaay better then FR graphics...
Anyway wish you best of luck on the hack!

giradialkia July 13th, 2010 12:58 AM

I don't think he means the hack will have 493 Pokemon, he means that the Sinnoh Pokemon that ARE present will have their own cries, ie they'll be like proper Sinnoh Pokemon, as opposed to replacements of other Pokemon.

Faline July 13th, 2010 2:37 AM

Love the presentation. Calm and neat. :3

This is looking good particularly. Just a need a bit of improvement and I'm sure it'll do great! :D

Tropical Sunlight July 13th, 2010 2:57 AM

I expect a lot of new music in this hack :P
Good luck with it!

Yes, I already have a lot :p
I'm extreeeemly good at inserting music. I've even remixed some, like the G/S titlescreen (I'm using that one :))

haack16 July 13th, 2010 11:36 AM

Cool, i like the idea. But you MUST change the tiles, i cant stand the FR/LG tiles, but i like the game,!!

Bump to first page :p

It's not that bad :(
I'm getting new tiles soon. I've just been busy lately :(

Shiny Quagsire August 11th, 2010 2:12 PM

Bump to first page!

Progress So Far:

Right now, my beta testers are checking for any bugs in the game, so for that duration, I'll be moving a bit slower than usual. I've been on a three week vacation, So I'm just getting back into the flow again :)

Shiny Quagsire August 20th, 2010 8:13 AM

Sigh, bump again... >8(

New Tiles = New Game!

I added some new tiles to my game, and boy do they look beautiful! But words can't explain a picture right? (It's worth 1,000 words, and I don't have time for that :p)

Gotta love the colors of the trees! Keep up the good work!

BTW, you have a new OW for the hero/heroine?

Anyways, good luck on this one! :3

Tropical Sunlight August 20th, 2010 9:00 AM

The new tiles are beautiful!
I expect this to be a wonderful hack to play.

I can't wait to change outfits :P

Omega Zero August 20th, 2010 4:45 PM

looking forward to the hack nice features too. but you are going to change the pokecenter palletes and stuff etc right? i think the grass tree palletes could do a little bit better but thats just me ;p

Lollypop August 20th, 2010 4:54 PM

Good Job! I can just see this turning into a famous hack....

PKMN Trainer Alison August 20th, 2010 5:29 PM

Looks like this is going to be a great game, I can't wait until you finish it! :D

Shiny Quagsire August 30th, 2010 7:34 PM

I've got good news, and bad news.

Most Unfortunate News

The bad news is less updates due to school starting tomorrow. I'll be hacking less and away from the computer more :(

Good News!

Alright, lets hear the good stuff!

I've been following JPAN's Fire Red Berry system with RTC. I''ve looked into it, and decided to put it on pokemon Chrome! His engine is written from scratch, and is a hybrid of RSE and DPPt ;)

Berry System Features:
  1. Planting System
  2. Watering System
  3. Mulch System!!!
  4. Stages Based on Time!

Planned Extra Features:
  1. Apricorns
  2. Flowers?
  3. Easter Egg Trees (Money, potion, ect)

i like the d&n system and the lit up windows

tente2 August 31st, 2010 8:27 AM

Ummm....?

Text going over the box hasn't caught your attention? The only reason it does that is because you exceeded the character limit and is fixed extremely easily. People have all the right to fret over such thing; it's very annoying and distracting. If you do not have the patience to fix such a thing it means you are either very lazy, or do not have enough time to work on it; both of which are bad have things to have if you are hacking. If it is the latter, like you are saying it is, then okay, but you will eventually fix it right?

Anyway, looks promising. Too bad I won't be able to play it now.

dbzmay August 31st, 2010 9:32 PM

Looks very well done. Hopefully new hero OW's will be released as the icing on the cake. Keep it up, will definately play.

aquadan September 1st, 2010 5:17 AM

Nice work!
i love the storyline, its nice and refreshing, but not too different that it becomes strange :>

Musician of Literature September 2nd, 2010 10:29 AM

I think you have a very excellent story idea. Mysterious. I think, though, that putting original music into the hack would be great, because if you use the music from game freak you are technically stealing from them (though I'm using the regi battle theme during my hack...)

Shiny Quagsire September 6th, 2010 12:13 PM

More New Tiles, and a Side Quest

I've added some lovely beach tiles! Creadit again goes to WesleyFG ;P

Oh, I should note that Pokemon Chrome's demo is coming soon! I'm just tidying up a bit ;)

Banjora Marxvile September 6th, 2010 12:19 PM

You've probably fixed this but:

http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss135/mtinc2/Pokemon-Chrome_01.png?t=1283801131
Under the air bed and parasol shade, the sand tiles look wrongly ordered. Just a little mistake that is easy to fix.

teejermiester September 6th, 2010 3:25 PM

In the fifth screenie in your last post, There's a tile error in the top where the water shows up. But other than that, no problems. I'm definately going to play this one!!!

Should be good the amount of video updates
and screeens here.

Shiny Quagsire September 13th, 2010 7:38 PM

Gah! Too much homework XD
Anyways, here's an update!

Update!

In my last update, I was going to put in a berry system. But, that's on hold for now, as it has been giving me trouble and delaying progress. However, there's something better, done by myself (With help from colcolstyles and zodiacdagreat for simple explanations on how to do it)

I've been studying...

..about how pallets in a tileset are loaded. I've been occupied by searching the rom for this routine, and I've found it. Why is it so important? For seasons! As of now, I am hacking the routine to check the season, and load the pallet differently. Here's how it works:

Dec-Feb:Winter
Mar-Aug:Normal
Sep-Nov: Fall

And here's a preview of one of those seasons!!
http://i55.*.com/4rb9r5.jpg

Future ASM Hacks...

  1. Different animations for all pokemon :3
  2. Better animation loading possibly
  3. And more to come...

He used a routine similar to that of day and night which changes the pallets used according to what season it is. In this games case, Winter, Normal, Fall.

Well since Shiny Quagsire seems to have a knack at ASM I believe he may have made his own routine. I am not sure but it is still a bit different of how Day and Night works....

Anyways it will be a good feature :). Best of luck on this...

astar_01 September 13th, 2010 10:51 PM

This is a really good idea if you can get it implemented! :D
In the picture of the winter season is that the same map as before but with a white palette?
Or are there different tiles used? and if so how will your routine change tiles. e.g. from tree to tree covered in snow.

Yeah, it's a bit different. The day and night adds to the pallet, this just hacks it altogether.

It's already halfway implemented. I just need to hack in my routine.

Lugiaz Soul September 14th, 2010 6:52 PM

Tile errors in the middle of the map. Dude, that stuff is like awesome. Maybe Nintendo was planning to do this with the snow animation they put into the game? But, i guess they weren't good stuff and just put it aside for SQ!

Shiny Quagsire September 14th, 2010 8:04 PM

The tile error is just because I had to squeeze a tile into an empty spot by a tree. It's an easy fix ;)

3/4 implemented. I've found the routine to load, and written my routine. I just need to slip mine in, and it's good to go!

I doubt it because Gamefreak make Pokemon :P

Anyway, the seasons is....wow.....just wow. I honestly think this hack may have a great chance at HOTY.

874521 September 15th, 2010 3:52 AM

Update looks really nice! Say, I think that boat tile is mine.. Please give credit if it is...

Shiny Quagsire September 16th, 2010 6:23 AM

Aak! I completely forgot out of the hassle of trying to fit it in! XD
I Added you, so it's cool now...

The seasons are IN!

After a gruesome two weeks of ASM hacking and debugging, I finally got it!
That's right! There are full fledged seasons! It switches from an orangy fall, to a white winter, and then to a beautiful spring! And of course normal summer :(

nasonex September 16th, 2010 6:33 AM

Nice Update you got there shiny quagsire!

The very first in Pokemon Hack to Implement the
seasons!

Great job in putting it all in. I hope to see screenies
soon! :P

Good Luck with this! Keep up the Good work! :)

that's great :D but some people live in the southern hemisphere and it'll be weird to have winter in summer etc O_o is there anyway to change that it's not a biggy it's just a strangey

Scytha September 17th, 2010 11:22 PM

Good work on finding those palette loading techniques.
Wish I knew how t'do that :/

Aurora Vulpix September 18th, 2010 1:09 AM

You can tell this is going to be great. I look forward to seeing more! :D

Lugiaz Soul September 18th, 2010 9:16 AM

Would it be awesome if the lakes and rivers froze during the winter and you could use iceskates to get across?

Yeah, I'd actually consider that. I'd need to hack the block loading routine though, but It'd work.

r0bert September 18th, 2010 11:35 AM

can i make a suggestion for fall?
here,it rains a lot in fall so maybe you could add puddles of water and fallen leaves.Keep it up!

==========================================================
R0bert.

r0bert September 18th, 2010 12:18 PM

you can't yet, there will be a demo soon though.

Shiny Quagsire September 18th, 2010 12:32 PM

I'm planning on getting the demo out after I get the overworlds in, and seasons done. ;)

874521 September 19th, 2010 12:06 AM

About the credits, it's 874521, not 87654321.

Lugiaz Soul September 19th, 2010 7:55 AM

Are you still gonna have people on the beach during the winter and fall? That would be wierd to see a beach umbrella during winter! Also you can make smoke come out of house chimneys during the winter. The seasons you implemented gives everyone ideas, so if were bombarding you with too much you can only blame yourself! LOL

r0bert September 19th, 2010 8:11 AM

and you should make the wild pokemon change too
also the events, like water minigames collecting leaves minigames would be nice too.

==================================================================
Sincerely,R0bert.

Andrut September 19th, 2010 8:52 AM

Have you seen white flowers in winter? xD
This is one of the best hacks i've seen. Congrats on making the seasons! =3 I think no hacker managed to do this in his hack!
There are only problems with beaches and wild pokemon. =< I hope you'll manage to change that.
Can't wait for the beta. It looks sincerely amazing!

Shiny Quagsire September 26th, 2010 5:11 PM

UPDATE!

Alright, progress is moving along great! The seasons are completely in! I hacked the behavior blocks and graphic blocks, so they'll look somewhere else depending on season. Result? Sliding on ice! That's right, you get to slide across frozen ponds during winter! I could also change certain objects, such as a house, to have snow on it! How cool is that :3

That's right, you get to slide across frozen ponds during winter! I could also change certain objects, such as a house, to have snow on it! How cool is that :3

Let me say this... very!!!!!!!!!

Though maybe you can do this for the seasons instead.

Dec-Feb: Winter
Mar-May: Normal
June-Aug: Kinda Dry and arid. Everything dying
Sep-Nov: Fall

Shiny Quagsire September 26th, 2010 5:15 PM

Eeeek! I forgot to post the in action video from before! Here's a link:
http://romhacktube.com/video/MMSWS7MA49U3/ASM-Hack-Seasons-in-Fire-Red

Note: This isn't the video above

edit: Here's the video!

Alignment September 26th, 2010 5:51 PM

That, is an awesome feature. Way to take complete advantage on the entire seasons thing!
Are you planning on making seasonal events? Like maybe a Pokemon battle-off (Yeah bad example) every spring or something like that?

nasonex September 27th, 2010 9:58 AM

Awesome Vid shiny quagsire! You leveled
up your Hacking skill!

From what I can see, you are the very first
hacker to implement this feature! Kudos to
you! :P

But you know what? Since you've implemented
a huge feature, be sure to expect people's
many suggestions and ideas.

For an instance, the battle background and
wild pokemons for each season, different events
for each season, and how about fishing on
winter? Smoke on chimneys and every idea
of PC members.

This is a lot of hard work and you should be
proud of it! It's another step on Pokemon
Hacking!

Anyways, Good luck on developing it! Be
looking forward to it and be able to see it
in the Beta.. :D

Shiny Quagsire September 28th, 2010 2:09 PM

Thanks. Ad don't worry, I'm always open to ideas -- Now that I have the power of ASM. >:)

And here's a small, but big update!

ASM Update!

With the help of thethethethe's ASM document, some GBA tech articles, and colcolstyles for some advice, I've managed to compress a tilemap into a separate ROM and display...
http://i51.*.com/166zkvt.jpg
A sign!

That's right, in Pokemon Chrome, signs look like signs. This sign was compiled and booted from a separate ROM, until it is ready for further use. But, if all goes well, it will display text along with it. ;)

Anyway,do this work like when i talk to a signpost, this thing will come out?

Shiny Quagsire September 29th, 2010 6:06 AM

So far, it's on a seperate ROM for testing purposes. Once I can get text in, it's good to go ;)

Can you do it? My guess would be no. Not many people on this site can do it, so lay off bro.

Anyways, I agree with Crimson Stardust, your ASM features look amazing! However, I haven't really seen anything on the core aspects of the hack(i.e. mapping, scripting, ect.), I would like to see some of those sorts. All things aside, this hack has great potential, and I wish you much luck!

Lugiaz Soul September 29th, 2010 7:23 PM

Looks like my idea about the ice was a go! Is it possible for you to make the water rise in certain places when it rains? That would be sick!

Hey, criticism isn't bad. That's an alpha of what's to come. It'll display text, and possibly be used for other signs and objects.

Thanks I'm not sure about water level, but I might do it. :)

Teh Blazer September 29th, 2010 8:18 PM

I like the hack and the progress it's making (I don't think I'd ever do as well)! One thing I'd like to add is my question. The title is Pokemon Chrome, with Shaymins on the front and Magnetons in the water. I just don't see how they all relate (maybe I'm just crazy)?

Also, are you gonna spill the secret of season change (How did you do it)? Pretty please? :3

I'll probably spill it in my ASM tutorial. I'll try to cover everything from retrieving pokemon data, to graphic drawings, to hacking routines. Of cource, the harder it is, the later it'll be written.

Crimson Stardust September 29th, 2010 9:23 PM

hahax,TB Pro is rite,
hahax,i would really play the alpha when its out, seeing many updates on the asm, don't really see much on the normal hacking needs like mapping etc..
but maybe you will just surprise us..hahax,..xD

I'd just like to a jab at how you did your seasons... With an RTC implemented did you just edit the pallet loading routines and add in which pallet to load by the date in the RTC?

I loaded the month, not the date, and yes, I edited the routine. It checks which pallet it is, if it is, it loads it differently.

Even I agree to that. In the pic, it's a bit dull. But, I've got text loaded, but there's a bug with "\n"s that needs to be fixed, and a pic is coming soon ;)

lol i never had any problem with it i just didn't have a super high expression like the others (even tho seeing asm in a hack isn't part of an everyday experience)

Yeah, it's pretty normal nowadays. But I never see anything created for a specific hack, Most ASM is like JPAN's engine or a routine written by hackmew.

Crimson Stardust October 3rd, 2010 9:20 PM

I cant wait to see the signpost in action..
its not normal in the case of your asm since not many hacks are using asm/doing asm like yours,
so yeah, thats what make it diffirent.

Shiny Quagsire October 7th, 2010 6:04 PM

You've been waiting, and it's here!

The signpost is done, and completely running on an individual ROM. The last step is to insert it into Chrome, and that's it!

Graphics-wise, it's ugly. The text is hardly readable and the actual signpost looks like something from the original Gameboy. It's awesome how you inserted and all, but...graphics, yeah.

Yes, that was more of temporary font so I could tell if the text loaded properly or not. I'll have to get my spriter to work on that....

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Spherical Ice here, the text is aweful.
The signpost itself doesn't really look that bad in my opinion, but can you change the background to another color besides super-ultra-omega-hot pink? lol

Shiny Quagsire October 8th, 2010 2:08 PM

That's just transparency. In the game, the pink will be invisible. ;)

Random92 October 8th, 2010 2:17 PM

So, this signpost thing you've made, it will "pop up" and cover the screen when you read a signpost in the game? That's really cool!

Yup, pretty much :)

As of now, I'm fighting a virus, my sign's pallet won't load, and I've been trying to work on the storyline a bit. Once I can get onto my computer without t freezing, I'll post some screenshots ;)

Shiny Quagsire November 6th, 2010 4:03 PM

Wow! Has it really been almost a month since an update?! :O Here's a neat one for you guys ;)

Update!

The beta is coming along well, and it is still being tested by my awesome beta testers. In case your wondering, it's not another signpost update, :p

The Beta's Are Being Tested!

That's right! My beta testers are recieving betas today! After they test them, I will release the first beta: Beta 1.0. It goes up to the first gym, and displays most of it's time features.

The Signposts are Up!

I've finally inserted the signpost into the game after some gruesome research. It was a pain, but I figured it out!
http://i51.*.com/o60605.png

Timely Events in Scripting, and Other Places you Wouldn't Even Guess!

Quite a heading there! :p

Alright, I've had these for a while, and I can't even believe I haven't show you. I've made Nurse Joy, like in G/S, give you a proper salutation according to the time of day!

http://i56.*.com/16iwozd.png
http://i51.*.com/2lndeus.png

I've also added seasonal changes to the world map! Ain't it pretty :)

Spring
http://i56.*.com/29wtuzn.png

Summer
http://i56.*.com/2m3fes2.png

Fall
http://i53.*.com/24azw54.png

Winter
http://i54.*.com/x1hjlk.png

Yeah, I couldn't quite get the winter's roads right...

That's all for this update! Feel free to comment on anything!

Platinum Lucario November 6th, 2010 5:33 PM

This is just absolutely brillient! However I do have a suggestion, maybe you could have the world map pallette of Summer more of a blueish green. Because the pallettes of Summer and Spring look exactly the same, so it would be hard to tell the difference. :x

This real time clock has the months as well as the days and the weeks. I sure am gonna play it when it gets released, this hack just makes me tempted even more. xD

And even that signpost looks nice as well, however I do have a suggestion on the signpost though, you might want to blend in the colours more so it doesn't look as if it's the same as the one in Pokémon Prism.

aSeRo141414 November 6th, 2010 5:36 PM

Looking good so far, and the world maps was good

chimchar8 November 6th, 2010 6:20 PM

wow this is a very nice hack and i LOVE the updates :)
seasonal changes to the map and the game i didnt think it was possible...YOUR AMAZING!!!!!!
i cant wait for the beta :D

Shiny Quagsire November 6th, 2010 6:26 PM

Thanks for the comments. And don't worry, a beta is coming soon!

chriskid198 November 6th, 2010 6:29 PM

The sign post looks awesome! And how did you make the seasons? Like them change and stuff. I can't wait to play.

*Looks for a support bar I like*

Lugiaz Soul November 6th, 2010 8:49 PM

The world map could be better. You still have not changed the head in the world map. Whats that little yellow line below the big lake? I seriously can't wait to play this game during a rainy day!

I honestly don't know what that line is :p And the reason for the head is because I haven't got a new overworld to replace the head with.

Also, there is not a poll for where the first beta should end!

chriskid198 November 6th, 2010 9:10 PM

You forgot one; Anywhere! As long as its good! :P

I personally prefer hacks that go further than 1 gym. So 2 or three. 2 if it will be released earlier.

I think I might just go to about two gyms. The events up to the first gym don't last too long, so I'm probably going to finish off the first base of land.
