Childhood Rivals and Starter Selection!

From Pokebeach:

Quote:

When you pick your starter, the other two go to your two rivals: Bell (the blond girl) and Cheren (the black-haired boy). They are your two childhood friends. All three of you start your journey together at the same time, just like Ash, Gary, and the other Pallet Town Pokemon Trainers in the show and the three Gold and Silver trainers in the Legend of Raikou special.

The game starts from Route 1, indicating that this region is much farther away than Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh.
http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx264/MistahDude/starterselect.jpg?t=1279036630

Many people were worried that there wouldn't be the classic "PICK A POKEBALL" thing, but dont worry its still there. It seems like you may get to battle your 2 childhood friends afterall. Cheren will most likely pick the pokemon that has an advantage over you while Bell picks the one that you have an advantage over. (You pick Pokabu, Cheren picks Mijumaru and Bell picks Tsutaja for example)

I know for a fact that you get to face Cheren:

http://serebii.net/blackwhite/cheren2.jpg

This is just like last generation with Dawn and Barry but I hope that you actually get to face the girl trainer. I would love for there to be 2 rivals.

http://pokebeach.com/news/0710/corocoro-black-white-2-3.jpg

From Pokebeach:
Quote:

Belle is spontaneous and one of your two rivals. Professor Araragi leaves you a present along with Cheren and Belle and says to share it with your friends. This is when you pick your starter. Sometimes you'll battle them during your adventure. She also has a strong side to her that shows like when she goes out on an adventure against her father's wishes. During your adventure she will have times where she will be unreliable as well, but she will grow as the story progresses. Cheren is very intelligent. He's very trustworthy and will give you advice throughout your journey. His goal is to be a champion.
It looks like we do get to face both Cheren and Bell! HECK YEAH! I am happy that we now have 2 rivals! What do you guys think?

Because we have 2 rivals we could actually participate in a triple battle with them, or maybe just a double battle!

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 8:02 AM

IU actully like this idea. It makes seem more like your in the pokemon world.

What idea? I don't see anything brand new in this article.

He didnt say the idea was new. He proly likes the idea of having 2 rivals.

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 8:09 AM

3 kids starting there journy at the same time. It isn't really new,but they are goign back to the classic ways. We arn't accidently getting our pokemon.

Air Pichu July 13th, 2010 8:09 AM

I like this too. 2 Rivals. I was kinda upset that you couldn't battle Dawn, but I hope it'd be like this.

Heather July 13th, 2010 8:14 AM

I like the idea of having two rivals too. Seems like more of a challenge :)

Demigod July 13th, 2010 8:14 AM

Ah, yeah.. it's so much better that way,
But what I'm really hoping is that soon we can create our own character.

Yeah that would be cool. Like be able to customize your character's hair and eyes and what he/she will wear. I don't like the idea of choosing from just two characters. Sadly by the looks at the information we've gotten so far I don't think this will be an option in the game.

But I do like the idea of having more childhood friends and generally I think this game will have a lot of characters in the story.

Heather July 13th, 2010 8:20 AM

I hope they do that someday. I would love to create my own character.

HugSomebody July 13th, 2010 8:23 AM

So we're going back to Route 1. I wonder where exactly this new region is. o.O

And the idea of two rivals is interesting; as one picks the Pokemon that has the advantage and another picks the one that has the disadvantage, how else will the two rivals differ?

Mechofear July 13th, 2010 8:29 AM

I like the idea of two rivals, more variety I suppose. Should be interesting :)

インフェルノの津波 July 13th, 2010 9:08 AM

Yay! More experience for all!

So the blond girls name is Bell....Time to make a new theme!

Timbjerr July 13th, 2010 9:32 AM

This is the part that excites me the most. With such thorough character descriptions, I can just tell they're gonna be recurring more during the plot than previous rivals, maybe even ally themselves with you for the occasional double/triple battle.

also, call me crazy, but I highly suspect this Cheran guy might get involved in the villainous team somehow. His dark features, calm, intelligent nature, and subdued outfit just shout "I will double cross you if the chance arises."

JP July 13th, 2010 9:38 AM

So this makes me wonder if we actually get to see the opposite gender trainer at all in the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we've yet to see both the female and male trainer on the same screen right? I hope we get to battle/communicate with the opposite character.

I am happy to finally see two rivals though, that should be great.

Bloothump July 13th, 2010 9:40 AM

I totally agree with Timbjerr, I'm just ecstatic that our characters have such in depth personality as their physical designs. I see that Beru/Belle is going against her father's wishes in her journey, so I think that's awesome. This probably means we won't have so many do-good characters.
Another thing I love is the fact that we have two childhood friends going on the journey with us! It seems like they both will be heavily involved in the story, which is great. I think that will really make up for the loneliness in most pokemon games.

Azure-Supernova July 13th, 2010 9:46 AM

So there's two suckers we have to triumph over now huh? Hopefully these guys will actually have some personality, unlike almost every other rival, who all seem to come away from defeat with more confidence than ever -_-

I hope Cheren's a real challenge, he looks like the kinda guy that might end up being a champion. Although seriously, more childhood friends? I know it's no solid indication of the plot, but it's already pulling tabs from Anime 101.

I happen to enjoy that lonliness, one boy and his Pokémon travelling across the region. I don't know, I like the solidarity, it's what Pokémon is all about to me, bonding with your team. If I wanted to talk to people, I'd go to that place... you know... outside :P

id rather my character not be a loner actually!!

Jaiyke July 13th, 2010 10:06 AM

WOO! Alright!! This makes me really happy =D
Cheren seems like he's gonna be a really tough Rival
Belle i really hope she's really strong too we need a Tough Female Rival

since we're going to be battling both of them when we get our starter
if we beat them both looks like we'll be on Level 7 by the time we get to Route 1 xD
or what if they make the Levels down to Level 1 ? o_o that'd be awesome/weird heehee

I'm not suggesting they have to be, but I'm sick of knowing who my rival is from the get go.

What is wrong with meeting him/her around the first or second Gym? What's the big idea of giving our character and their rival a pre-existing relationship, I just feel it'd be better if we met them in-game and the relationship built up from there.

Perhaps we meet them and they help us at first, maybe they appear as a normal trainer and challenge us to a battle? Whatever, I'm just bored of the same thing.

Well, N will serve as a sort of a rival considering it has been stated he will battle us numerous times throughout the game. I think that, and our two childhood rivals have are great additions, because for me, the more long-term relationships we have with other characters the better.
In fact, I think this game may erase the whole "rival" tradition and just give us several characters we casually battle with. Personally, "rival" just feels like a spot to fill and almost excuses real personalities and roles in the story.

I suppose in some cases that is true, I guess that depends on how each individual plays the game too. I hope that Cheren at least has an attitude :D But on the note of rivals, a friend and I see each other as rivals and always name our in-game rivals after each other.

Solodomo July 13th, 2010 10:47 AM

its awesome that there are 2 rivals

Bloothump July 13th, 2010 10:50 AM

I do that too, my friend and I are very competitive, and I always keep him in mind when training or teaching moves or choosing teams. Having a real life person to strive against really helps you do good in the game. I think that's the problem I've always had against rivals. I never had to try to beat them, I never thought of them while playing. I just knew they'd show up, and I'd beat them, then we'd both move along on our separate paths.

IceFireLighnting July 13th, 2010 10:51 AM

I think that having two rivals is awesome and anyone who thinks different will be smooshed by Hariyama butt.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 11:48 AM

Two rivals sounds awesome, I think N will become our third rival ;)

Calder July 13th, 2010 11:51 AM

I love this idea and I wanted this since I first played Blue... (First game for me) That was my first thought one I picked Squirtle and Gary choose Bulbasaur I was like "What about the charmander?" and felt sad for him :( We will also be able to see all the evos of the starters for the Dex instead of yours + rivals + random trainers so sweet... Anyone else think that Palmer had another child in this region o.o Bell looks like Berry/Jun's Sister...

Maybe Beru is Berry's cousin :P
Yeah I felt sad for the squirtle in FR :(

Dominus Temporis July 13th, 2010 12:11 PM

I have to say, now that we have clearer pictures, I'm more pleased with the two rival characters than ever (and as far as I'm concerned, Bell is adorable and nobody can change my mind!). Having two real rivals and facing both of them, while they get full-blooded characterization... just, wow. GameFreak is going all out on this one, so it seems. The only way this could get better is if there's a triple battle where the player teams up with both rivals against the big bad or something.

(okay, I know it's extremely unlikely, but it would be really cool if all three kids had a full team of six and the villain had eighteen Pokemon just for it to be even. That'd be an epic battle)

I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happened, I remember teaming up with Dawn back in DPt, so that surely sounds possible.

I really like the rivals, they're going to be fun to deal with. I can't wait to hear about the fan that always wins against Cheren and loses to Bell. XD

インフェルノの津波 July 13th, 2010 12:15 PM

Um guys, you do realize that not everyone in the game is someone's relative XD?

Cheren looks like me; calm, collected, and kicks major ass.

But the thing that bothers me is they are representing Mijumaru and Tsutaaja, makes you want to choose Pokabu....

Yes, but orange is orange and oranges means RELATIONS. :(

Just saying, that's the vibe that Bell gives off, that's all. XD

And haha, I was thinking about the Pokabu thing too. It's like they're preying on the fact that the fire-starter is the most popular. (well, in most generations)

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 12:24 PM

The grass one is the most famous so far of the starters though of gen 5 not the fire one like in other gens...
I want the rivals to be hard!

Haha, yeah, I certainly hope it would be intense. As long as this game's changing some things up, they may as well have the villain use a bunch of Pokemon and say "Screw the rules!" (because he has green hair, perhaps?) Three-on-one doesn't seem too fair unless the villain's overleveled or has an equal amount of teammates to the combined heroes.

Also, I was looking at Cheren's summary on Pokebeach, and it mentions him as "very intelligent" and that he is "extremely trustworthy and will give you advice throughout your journey." It seems to me, at least as far as I can guess, that he's sort of the expert amongst the three friends, and while he might possibly be cold and calculating, he's honorable and would prefer to win without an unfair advantage (since he's giving his rivals advice).

I want to battle the girl so bad :P Also, if we're older, why are we just starting? So many questions.

My assumption is that the culture of Isshu is different from other regions. For instance, seeing as it's believed to be a region much father away, perhaps society of the Isshu Region feels that a trainer should start later for their journey, rather than so soon. Policies tend to change between countries, this might be an example.

Yamikarasu July 13th, 2010 12:50 PM

It isn't the first time we've had two rivals. Remember RSE? You had to battle both Wally and Brendan/May. Just pointing that out.

Still, I love this idea.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 12:50 PM

Yeah or maybe you just moved to Isshu like in RSE...

That's probably the most plausible answer, except if the Professor couldn't get any pokemon for that long. :P

Does that mean we'd be seeing all sorts of adverts about the global economy crisis on the TV too :P Cash 4 Nuggets!

So now I'm wondering... with two rivals/friends now, how will they both balance themselves out against you (providing you get to fight both)?

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 1:11 PM

Well maybe they pick the starters weak against and strong against you then they get vise versa as their second pokemon thus they will balance out

I can't stand those CASH 4 GOLD commercials. XD Haha, good one.

I would hope that they have different teams that vary to their personality. For example, Cheren would have a highly competitive team that's a very tough challenge, while Bell has a cute, but surprisingly powerful team. Like I said earlier, I'd think Cheren would get the starter that's better than your selection, while Bell gets the short end of the stick but has the starter better than Cheren. [/ramble]

Yeah that makes plenty of sense... I didn't really think that one through but now I have it makes sense. I guess this just makes the trainers job a wee bit tougher, because the pair of them can cover more weaknesses and strengths, so we're going to have to build a team that can hold up against both. Not an issue, but still at higher levels (and better AI) they could be tough fights, and not in the cheap way.

Agreed. Also, seeing as we tend to face our rivals before the Elite Four, it might be tough coming out of Victory Road if we have to face both. I can't even think of double battle against both of them.

Bluerang1 July 13th, 2010 1:41 PM

I think we'll have 3(4) rivals/people to battle against.

1) Cheren
2) Belle (I really like the idea of starting with two)
3) N
4) This great trainer that Prof. Aragagi knows - Who is the Girl or Boy we don't choose. We need to battle them OMG! They'll be the Champion!!! :o

I'd also liek to battle Prof. A and her assistant.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 1:47 PM

The assistant looks shy and reminds me of Munna...

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 1:49 PM

Given that Belle is apparently going on her journey "against her father's wishes" I could actually see this happening. It's a big world, after all, odds are some people are opposed to Pokemon training for whatever reasons. Maybe that's the reason the professor only just got the Pokemon? Hmm, maybe she's not as well-liked in the beginning town...

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Although they likely wouldn't show it, I also hope they have the two of them battle at a couple points (early on Cheren beats Belle, and it strengthens her resolve, or something).

Yeah, I could see that happening. That what's it might mean by her 'growing up along the way'. That could just tie in with her father, or maybe as you suggested, Cheren.

I can't wait for this. I hope there will be something "new" with these games. Something that suprises us. I believe that i have read something about this, but cant really remember. This i mean beside the two rivals thing. But maybe this is what they meant. =p

Anyways, theres something i don't get:

No, I wouldn't say that anything is "better," but some people would rather not wait until the games are localized and released in English a few months later. Some of them know Japanese, some don't and can get by just fine. It's just a matter of patience (I, for one, prefer to wait, but appreciate learning more about it from the people who are playing it early).

Also, I just want to say that Belle, even if it's not what her name is properly translated as, is what I shall call her. Beru reminds me far too much of Luke Skywalker's aunt.

Bluerang1 July 13th, 2010 2:27 PM

I think we should be speculating what becomes of our other gender counter-part. I think it'll be fantastic to see Black/White at the League Champion.

Also, B/W = more of a re-boot than RSE ever was.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 2:28 PM

I hope the rivals team up with you to take down the evil team like in Pt like we said before :)

Masterge77 July 13th, 2010 2:59 PM

Only one question, which of the two rivals gets the starter that's the opposite type of yours, and which one gets the starter that yours has the advantage on?

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 3:02 PM

I would say the boy will get the one that is strong against yours. Girl will probably just get what ever is left and refer to it as cute.

doesn't seem like we have to catch one for her. She might have lost one like you said. We have to do something related to Belle and Munna/Mushaana.

1) Cheren
2) Belle (I really like the idea of starting with two)
3) N
4) This great trainer that Prof. Aragagi knows - Who is the Girl or Boy we don't choose. We need to battle them OMG! They'll be the Champion!!! :o

Actually I like the sound of four rivals, after an avalanche of fodder trainers and eight underwhelming gym leaders, facing a tough opponent more frequently will maybe stop me slacking off before I get to the E4.

Cheren and Belle would be your "friendly rivals" who want to test their skills and see how you've advanced, as well as offer you assistance when needed. One or both of these should make it through to the E4.

N is there obviously, running into you when you interrupt his plans and will be the biggest pre E4 challenge.

Number 4 (and there should be one) should fill two roles, first appearing in Team 'X' as a Grunt (slightly more notable than other grunts) and then recurring, increasing in levels and rank along with you.

Jaiyke July 13th, 2010 3:23 PM

i hope we get to Name Both of them
i dunno... i just like naming Characters in Games XDDDD

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 3:25 PM

I don't think if we have a forth rival that they will be a grunt for the team...I see the 4th one as the Lyra/lucas/dawn/Ethan of the group...

Awwww... but they just got annoying... we haven't had a real Rival since G/S/C (HG/SS if you count the remakes). I want some competition! Not some sad sack who just follows me around and might or might not have a crush on me -_-

Guys, first of all, just because she has a flower in her hair does not mean she has a Munna. Second of all, she's not one of the childhood friends so we should stay more on topic.

as long as the major other appears in some role I'm happy

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 6:09 PM

I myself hope that if we have a fourth rival they aren't like Dawn,Ethan, ect. but instead you just meet up and become sparring pals...

Calder July 13th, 2010 6:49 PM

I just thought of something with all these rivals we might not have an Elite 4 and Champion but a tournament like in the show where you fight your rivals in the tournament...

Like this...

http://i26.*.com/21nlagm.png

or with more trainers so you fight all 4

She is the one who tells you about Mushaana and Munna's abilities. She is also the one that gives you the C Gear. All of the ingame pictures we have seen of her were with Munna and Mushaana. its safe to say she has one.

Now that would definitely be interesting. Like a mini-tournament around the seventh/eighth badge... or something.

Would be fun.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire July 13th, 2010 8:24 PM

Well N says he wants to better than the champion so maybe if there is a tournament we can battle the champion for the title after we win the tourney:\

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 8:29 PM

It prob be like this.

Round 1:
You and Bell
Cheren and Someone
Someone and Someone
N and Someone
Someone and Someone
Someone and Someone
Someone and Someone
Black/White and Someone

Round 2:
You and Cheren
N and Someone
Someone and Someone
B/W and Someone

Round 3:
You and N
B/W and Someone

Round 4:
B/W and You

Winner:
You

And the Mysterious Champion

N could get some power and change to make his pokemon stronger and challenges you again at the very end.

That seems to make sense, what N entered the tourney but your the champ already!? :P

Iceshadow3317 July 13th, 2010 8:45 PM

After you beat him. He could get soem type of power. You said yourself that he wants to be more powerful then the champ.

True he did say that...but then he says he want to free pokemon, uh what a confusing character he is :P

Astinus July 13th, 2010 9:33 PM

I'm just happy about the fact that more characterization is included in these games. Instead of the rival NPC being the basic bratty rival, we get more of an insight into the other starting characters.

Cheren is still seriously my favorite out of the introduced characters. I love his design. Always have. Belle, on the other hand, scares me a bit.

I can't wait to see how the dynamic between these characters work.

As for that battle tournament idea? Do want. I love tournament-style Pokemon battles.

What about Belle scares you:\
Yeah Cheren is pretty cool, I like the smart type of rival :)

Bluerang1 July 13th, 2010 11:34 PM

Didn't anyone hear me when I said the Champion should be Black/White depending on the Protagonist we choose?

RaichuPwnsPikachu July 14th, 2010 2:13 PM

the rivals r kinda gay u no expect mystery man n hes liek silver expect mudkipz and hes cooler

Well our first battle with our rivals takes place in the room according to the videos we have seen...

Man,this sounds cool!
Battling 2 rivals, and going on an adventure with them.
Makes me even more excited!

You battle Belle in your room first and it destroys your room in the process, then you face Cheren.

Something that every other generation seemed to miss and that DPPt covered slightly on was more characterization for the game's rivals. It always seemed to me that the rivals should just be more than just rivals but apart of the storyline too. Based on all the description given, one can only hope that's what B&W is working on implementing through the game's plot.

However, I'm looking for more than just the characterization alone. I'm really hoping that these rivals put up a good enough fight. The game developers always gave our rivals talk, but they never game them enough strategy or effort to put more than a mere dent on us. So, I'm looking forward to that as well, especially seeing as we've gotten just about three rivals and they all look like they'll be pretty decent in the game itself.

Tournament style Pokémon League is what I'm really hoping hard for this generation. Elite Four Leagues are great, but they're too easy. I'd like to challenge the Elite Four and region champion after partaking in a real tournament-style league; with the rivals, it'll make it all the more fun.

Well from what i gather, you battle Belle (she gets the weaker one) that destroys your room and then Cheren challenges you after (he gets the stronger one)

EDIT:weaker meaning not super effective and stronger meaning super effective

dragon0fangz July 27th, 2010 6:12 PM

welcome, G3rm O_o.
also i would like many more rivals than 3 ^_^ it would be difficult, and more like ash. Wherever he goes, he makes enemies. Maybe you will have a crazed mob at the end, and you have to fight them all in a row!

Kevin July 27th, 2010 6:40 PM

Yes. Two rivals are way better than one. And they are your friends. No stupid rival from HG/SS hitting you and everything. This'll be good. =D

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ July 29th, 2010 3:38 AM

Why do the rivals have better fashion sense than your character? lol

And I dunno, I thought the point of a rival wasn't to be your friend, but to be a sadistic individual who wants to beat you into the ground at all costs. Maybe I'm completely missing the point here...

Maknae July 29th, 2010 6:07 AM

Meh...... -.- I just bought and started SS and here comes a new game D:

Looks great, I'll definitely get this game! 2 Rivals! No accidental Poke-pick and you can easily whoop one of your rival's pokemon (the one who chooses pokemon which you have an advantage on) :D

YES!YES!YES!!! This sounds absolutely Fantastic. League then Elite 4, WOW! :D

Captain Riolu July 29th, 2010 8:10 AM

I want to team up with both of them in a triple battle sometime in the game.

Andrut July 29th, 2010 8:23 AM

I don't want to be childhood friends with such a weird-looking girl like Belle and a nerd like Cheren. xD His name reminds me of a Cherry. O.o
Quote:

I don't think so,especially Belle with that giant Beret. <_< But when i saw female's shorts i WTFed.
Well, the "two rivals" idea will at least make the game more interesting, but then we'll whack one of them in no time. I hope Cheren will have the weaker one, cause they said he is more clever, or something like that.

Mew~ July 29th, 2010 8:55 AM

Well we've has two rivals before but I guess its better because you will be able to battle them a bit more then in any of the other games... I wonder which outta the two pick your weakness and which picks the other...?

BluePhoenix1419 July 29th, 2010 9:07 AM

belle

i think that there may be more to belle than we think.. she's stuck with the pokemon thats at a disadvantage to our starter, and she is more of the stick in the mud outta the group...and she's disobeying her father! she may be a surprise force when we were expectiing cheren or n!!! btw, y do we get stuck with the most awkward friends...are they suppose 2 be groupies lol?
