Good Anti Virus downloads?

Does anyone know of any good Virus Protection software? Most of mine have expired so I want to get some more just to be on the safe side.
Thanks.

Depends on what you can afford or if you are looking for something free.

Free: AVG. I used it and it didn't let me down.

Buying: Norton 360 3rd edition. I hate the other 360 versions, but this one has been flawless. Hasn't let me down once and its other useful features make it my recommendation so far.

Thanks, I'll try it. How many virus protections do you need?

Oh, and something free :D

donavannj July 20th, 2010 11:26 AM

AVG really can't compare to Microsoft Security Essentials, in my opinion. But that's just my experience. Maybe AVG 9.0 is better than AVG 8.5 was. I do know that MSE uses Windows Update to update, though. And it's lighter on resources than most of the free AVs out there.

Only one. Because if you have more than one, they can conflict with each other and cause holes.

Maydevoir July 20th, 2010 11:34 AM

Avira AntiVir is the best free anti-virus.

From personal experience, I have to disagree on this. It's too sensitive to false positives and misses some actual threats.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials free? Or does it cost money?

@My friend downloaded 8 different Virus Protection and his computer runs really fast.

It's free to download. Microsoft has apparently seen it as in their best interests to create a competent free antivirus program. It also has a built in anti-spyware component, if I recall correctly, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Free ones don't conflict quite so much, but they still conflict and bog it down somewhat. That friend of yours must have a much newer computer than you if you think it runs really fast.

Well I use spyware doctor, I apparently got it when it was free and its pretty good keeping virus's off my computer. But now you have to pay for it to actually remove the virus's off your computer :/

Charizard★ July 20th, 2010 1:54 PM

Just one question first, how do you know if you have Windows XP or not? I'm pretty sure i have it but I want to make sure. :x

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: winver.

Alwaysbored July 20th, 2010 2:57 PM

spyware doctor is the only one i know of.

professor plum July 20th, 2010 3:00 PM

I use avast! antivirus, free edition & Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (:
They suffice for me ^-^

Charizard★ July 20th, 2010 3:11 PM

Thanks guys, I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials though.

Thanks for the help though xD

I'd like to sort of-but-not really commandeer this thread for a moment.

My mother managed to acquire a virus or something that opens IE and creates a bunch of tabs linking to the Viagra website, as well as making her profile slow down to snail speed. =/ Our McAfee subscription ran out so she hopped over to my profile, renewed it and got the exe file the site gave to her. It wouldn't install properly, and so I cancelled it from Task Manager. Now I can't find the thing. I was considering getting a free antivirus just to oust whatever we have now, and sort everything out later.

Malfunction, need input.

HackMew July 26th, 2010 1:37 PM

I agree with donavannj. I've been using all the free versions of Avira AntiVir, AVG and avast! and they were giving me annoying false positives, among other things. I'll quote myself:

I can easily suggest MSE, or Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free for any Windows XP/Vista/7 genuine system, it's lightweight, has a clean and simple GUI, gets updated automatically through the Windows Updates engine, and last but definitely not the least, offers a good protection; better then some paid products, actually.
But don't just take my word for it, or anyone else's: check the comparatives below yourself, and see what might be the best for you.

Well, I guess you could start a thread of your own given the fact it's a slightly different topic. So we can help you without going OT.

It's close to the same thing, at least in my eyes. Oh well, it's fine. We got it all sorted out.

The Wave July 28th, 2010 2:21 PM

First of all, all anti-virus programs have the same problem; they may give false messages or miss viruses. That's just something unavoidable. What IS important though is WHICH viruses the program misses.

That said, in my opinion Avira Antivir is one of the best free anti-virus. It has protected my pc so far from viruses.

As for the best paid anti-virus, I would go to Windows Live One Care. Sure, it's expensive, but in my experience it detects almost anything unusual on your pc. Sure, this means it's very sensitive, but thus far it has found most viruses, including though ones that not any other anti-virus could find.

No offense, but your friend has no idea what he's doing if he downloaded eight anti-virus programs. Any more than one is going to hurt your performance and possibly system stability.

I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free. If you have money to spare, ESET NOD32 is also very good.

Did you know that Microsoft Security Essentials is based off of the same definitions engine as Windows Live One Care was? It's pretty hard to tell, because One Care is very intrusive to using the computer and MSE isn't. It's the same engine, except the pestering factor is scaled back quite a bit in MSE.

Palantides July 28th, 2010 5:58 PM

The one thing that I would say Avast performs better than MSE, is that it has self protection. Many anti-virus programs don't have this, but the key system files that are important for Avast to run are actually stored in the quarantine section, meaning that the anti-virus program itself cannot be attacked.

I've seen viruses attack Norton, McAffee, Avira, AVG, etc. This little feature on Avast really makes it stand out that much more for me. It's also got 100% detection on "in the wild" viruses, and has won quite a number of awards for it.

If you want to pay for something, Kaspersky runs quite well. But why would you want to pay for an anti-virus program when you can get great ones that are free? Only thing with Kaspersky is that it's low on system resources, which is a good thing.

If you want less bloat, I'd recommend Panda Cloud Anti-virus. The files are scanned on a remote server rather than on your machine, so you'll find that less system resources are used. But you should use it as a defense tool rather than trying to clean up a system that is infected. So make sure your system is clean before using Panda (I'd recommend if for a Netbook rather than a desktop or office computer).

Dawn July 29th, 2010 12:40 AM

With Avast, I've had the pleasure of never technically having to remove a virus. Why? Avast knows if it's a virus before you even download it. If a virus of some sorts trys to get downloaded to your computer, Avast will detect it before it even finishes downloading and kill the DL. It will even kill malicious ads and the sort.

You can't remove something that was never there. http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/620/badassplz.gif

I can't really speak for other AVs though. I switched from Norton to Avast when I was a lot younger, and the sheer superiority of Avast just won me for life. (Or at least, beyond the point of bothering to search for something better when it so clearly didn't fail me.)

It is? I didn't know that. O_O

If that's really the case, and since MSE is free, I would say get MSE too.
*goes off installing MSE* XP
