Microsoft Excel locked up...great.
I guess that's what you'd call it. Anyway, I have some assignments in Excel due by tomorrow, and I got into my Excel and opened my file and realized I couldn't type anything. I look up at the tabs and ribbon to see that it's all grey, so I can't click on anything. A few things (like the find and replace button) aren't grey, but everything else is. Now, it didn't do this to me the other night. And MS Word didn't do this to me last week.
I'm starting to think it might have to do with me not having a registration code/key number for it, but even without one, it worked, and that goes for Word too. But yeah, if I don't get this fixed tonight, I can probably kiss passing my class good bye. Hope someone can help with this. |
Which version? And did you actually pay for a license upgrade for it yet? Those trial versions only allow for 20 uses.
For now, use Open Office, which is a less capable freeware suite from Sun Microsystems. |
Ok, try this:
Ctrl + F10. I ain't joking! In Excel try that after opening a file. |
These files I have for my class are for Excel only. And ctrl + F10 just changes the veiwpoint...which doesn't help. Thanks for trying to help.

1. Open Excel
2. Click the Microsoft button (Round button top left) 3. Click on the Excel Options button 4. Select Add-ins on the left menu 5. At the bottom of the screen make sure the pull-down window says excel add-ins 6. Click Go 7. Enable the look-up wizard 8. Put a check mark beside Lookup Wizard 9. Click OK Try this? |
I can't even click that. :/ It's locked pretty tightly.
|
Uhhhh, extend mode could be turned on. Press F8.
|
That didn't work either. I really don't know what else I can do. :/
|
You can't edit anything on a trial version once your 20 free uses are up. I found that out the hard way on my laptop last summer.
Are the .files in xlsx or .xls in format? I know Open Office can edit .xls files. And is there another computer in your house with a different version of Office? Because Office 2003 has a compatibility pack that you can install which enables you to view .xlsx files and edit them. |
Try to restart your computer, if that doesn't work buy a new one or download a new program.

Just download OpenOffice and finish it with that.

Download and install Open Office for now.
A crude way to convert the files (make backup copies of them before trying this!) is to go press "Windows Logo" key and "E" at the same time, then look for the "Tools" menu. Select "Folder Options" from that menu, click over to the "View" tab, and then, under the "Advanced Settings" box, look for and make sure the checkbox next to "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" is unchecked. Then, go to where your spreadsheets are in your folders, and right click on each and select "Rename" delete the last "x" in the file name to make the end of the filename look like ".xls". That might work to make it so you can edit them in Open Office. Make sure to make backup copies of them before doing this, though. |
I'm not allowed to change the file names or extensions though. I'll just get a 0 marked. :/
|
You should be able to edit Excel spreadsheets in OpenOffice.org if it's an emergency, but unfortunately it's a big download. Google is probably your best hope.

For now, though, just do what twocows suggested and use Google Docs or do a Google search on your options. Otherwise you're pretty much out of options other than explaining to your teacher that your Office trial expired overnight. |
Did you solve the problem by any chance? Or was it just the case of having the trial run out?
