So, I need a new keyboard. Suggestions?

Okay, so I discovered my escape key is broken. This is a problem because AutoCAD makes liberal use of the escape key. Thusly I'm in the market for a new keyboard.

Now I haven't decided if I want to go full out and get a nice gaming keyboard or just go for a cheapy style one. So I'd appreciate options for both.

Since I'm a mac user, I'd like there to be supported drivers for mac osx, and hopefully media keys (vol up, vol down, mute, eject). I don't really want to pay $50 for a replacement keyboard from apple, but if it's the best option I will.

If you need an Apple compatible board, the normal Apple Keyboard with the Numeric Pad looks great. It's not that expensive, really.

I'd recommend the Logitech DiNovo Mac edition. It costs slightly more than the Apple retail keyboard but comes with every key you need for mac. It also works well under windows, but the regular media keys revert back the the windows F1-19 equivalents.
btw, I'm using that keyboard now, I bought it back in September from B&H and I'm only halfway through the original batteries' life. It;s wireless, but not bluetooth, so it does come with a dongle. However the keyboard itself does have an on/off switch so you don't have to keep plugging and unplugging the dongle.

If you want an inexpensive wireless keyboard, I would recommend one from iHome, because they're relatively simple to set up, and the battery life is about 75% of the way between moderate and long, and of course it depends on how much usage you'd got out of it. I bought mine in February, and since I rarely use it, I have yet to change the batteries. And if you want to take advantage of the media keys, consider using USB Overdrive, which is a utility that allows you to configure any USB human interface, like a game pad, joystick, or mouse.

You can use Windows keyboards on Mac's and vice versa. Just keep in mind that if a Windows keyboard is connected to a Mac, the "Windows" key serves as the Command key. Same thing with a Apple keyboard on a PC: Command = Windows

My brother has one of these for his PS3 and his MacBook Pro, and boy is it nice. I just wish I had the money for one, or I'd have one by now. :)

Mechanical switch keyboards are great, especially the ones that don't make that annoying click sound. If you can still find an ABS M1 for a good price (it sold for about $30 originally), it makes a great keyboard. Otherwise, the next cheapest one I know of is this one for $109.

I would highly recommend this one:

I've been using it for the past 2 years, and I absolutely love it. Because it's a laptop style keyboard, there's no need for the extra wrist rest. It's nice and flat. The keys aren't too loud (at times you can't even here them), and it doesn't take up a whole lot of space. There's actually another version of the keyboard that has a little door with a USB port (but is a bit more expensive). I'd also recommend the mouse (same model series, the Ci73), it's nice. :D

Get a multimedia keyboard, lol. But their lifetime is not that much as computer to mechanical keyboard (the oldest ones).

I like the new keyboards that are just rubber and you can bring it anywhere.

The flexy ones? They're horrible for typing on. Be a hardcore and get a Logitech G19. :D

You would not believe how many guildmates of mine have told me to get some variation of that, I've had numerous opinions for the G15, one for the oldschool G10, one for the G110 (new version of G10)

Not a fan of Logitech keyboards, mostly because they're all membrane switches, which I don't really like. I love my mechanical switches. I just wish there was something in my price range; I'm upset I didn't get the ABS M1 when it was out (though in my defense, I was broke). Meanwhile, I'm using an old IBM keyboard from who knows when because it has buckling switches, which, while loud, still work and feel great. Plus, if someone tries to attack me, I can bludgeon them with it.

They might be nicer to use, but for availability's sake, it might be fine to go mainstream membrane. Hell, 99.7% of people use membrane keyboards, anyway. I've been considering getting an Apple keyboard for my computer, but I can't justify spending any more money on keyboards.

Have a look at the new Razer Tron keyboard. :D

The old buckling-spring keyboards aren't available from IBM anymore, but they are available from Unicomp, who bought the rights, I believe. I'm seriously considering getting an SK-720C, since it's only $15. Plus, the connector is PS/2, so I won't be wasting a USB slot like with 90% of my keyboards. <3
