External Hard Drive: Any Brand Suggestions?
Hey guys,
I'm contemplating a hard drive purchase for September, and I need some advice on which brand would be the best choice. For capacity, I'd like something between 500 GB and 1.5 TB, and form factor (desktop or travel-sized) really doesn't matter to me, although I'd prefer a desktop model. I'm also trying to steer away from the Western Digital travel drives, because read some reviews about them on C|Net, how they fail rather quickly, and also their lack of durability. So, which brand and model of hard drive would you recommend? Also, do you think the Seagate Free Agent series would be a good choice, or not? |
I have no qualms with my LaCie drives. Excellent quality. Though they are bit more expensive than say WD drives.

I, personally, have a pocket 500GB Western Digital (WD) HDD and it hasn't once let me down. Easy to use and nothing to install. Been using it for over a year now and It is just what I need.
I would highly recommend WD to you. |
I personally use a 500 GB Western Digital Essentials drive, but I don't really carry that with me anywhere, since all I use it for is backups.
I recommend getting something bigger than 500 GB, because I've already managed to fill mine halfway up within 3 months of owning it. |
Ever since I've had my MacBook I've owned a 1 TB Apple Time Capsule, and while it's not exactly portable and there's no USB connection for it (it's all network-based, either over Wifi or Ethernet), it hasn't failed me once and it makes a damn good base station. I'd go for the 2 TB model, though, since I only have about 400 GB left on it.

Thanks for your suggestions so far, but keep them coming, people. I would to see what you have to offer. |
I've got 4 western digital drives (internal and external) that I use externally for my computer, none of them have failed me once in the 6 years I've had them. (even switching from Windows formatting to Mac formatting didn't phase them) SO I too would recommend anything Western Digital.
That said I've also got a couple Seagate drives, and they are ok as well, however I would advise that you stay away from Maxtor drives, even though they are owned by Seagate, Maxtor is where most of the lower quality drives end up. LaCie is also a fair brand, I haven't had any personally, but they've worked well for my friends who do use them. Don't always take reviews on products, most of the time when a product goes bad, people give it a bad review and never go back to edit their review if things get patched up. |
Alright, so it looks like I'll have to steer away from Maxtor and bad hardware reviews, and go with Western Digital all the way, then. Good to know. ;)

As others have said, Western Digital is a good brand. I recommend this one. Samsung also makes good hard drives.
