Narrowing down the handhelds
I'm planning to eventually get a DS so I can play D&P, as well as the upcoming B&W games. However, I still want to play my original Game Boy Pokemon games, which I hear do not run on a DS. Currently, I have both a GBC and a GBA system. Does it make more sense to sell one over the other? It looks like they're both worth about the same. I will say though, my GBC has a better magnifying glass/light attachment than my GBA... (it's not a GBA SP)
Also, does it make a real difference which DS I choose? I know the new models may have more features, but is it worth it price-wise? |
I say you should keep them all, I have all my original systems still. Someday they will be near impossible to find.

Lessee, GBA runs GB/C games too, so I suppose a DSi would not be a bad thing for you. However, a DS Lite has the GBA slot (that plays GBA only), which you may want for sending Pokemon from RSE/FrLg to DPPt/HgSs. Just depends. I'll present facts, you make your own decision.

I can't imagine either would be worth selling. They're pretty outdated and not exactly rare. Simply put, it'd probably be worth it to just find a box and carefully organize them, and then put them away somewhere you can find them later when you feel nostalgic.
But if you insist: here are some facts, don't know what you know, just some things that may be important to you GBC games would play in GBC and GBA (No DS's) GBA games play in GBA and DS and DS Lite DSi adds camera and etc., but can't play any of the former. 3DS is coming out in what is assumed to be less than a year, and is assumed to be capable of playing DS games (not confirmed or struck down I believe. So not exactly a fact yet). It also may be considerably expensive. |
I agree with lx_theo. You probably won't get more than $10-20 for the GBC and I can't imagine anyone paying more than $30 for a non-SP GBA. :/ Unless you really, really need funds and can find a taker for your old systems at a high price, I don't think selling them would even be worth it.
DS Lite is probably your best bet if you're getting a DS now. If you already had a DS I'd just suggest upgrading to a DSi because you'd already have a way to Pal Park things (which is the main reason for keeping a Lite around unless you often play GBA games). But the DS Lite's ability to play older games and, in some cases, interact with them, easily trumps the gimmicky camera features. That and it's much cheaper. Alternatively you could wait for the 3DS and the price drops to older systems that'll come with it or just save up for one. It probably comes out next year. |
What makes 3DS so special other than 3D graphics? Looks like DS Lite may be the way for me to go. Do they have automatic connections with other systems or do I have to buy an attachment like the old days if I want to trade and battle Pokemon?

All models of the DS have wireless system-to-system communication. No more Link Cables. =) Welcome to the future, my brother. |
Go with the DSi if you must. The GBA slot is absolutely useless for all but, what, 7 games? The DSlite GBA port makes it stick out obnoxiously and the DSPhat is just a brick. The DSi has a much better design and downloadable games. Ninety percent of them are absolute garbage, but they have their share of good games.
Personally, I'd go wait until the 3DS. The 3D is crap, but at least the cartridges can hold significantly more memory(about 2GB iirc). |

I guess what it comes down to is, how would this apply to a Pokemon fan? Pokemon is the only reason I care at all about handheld gaming. That's it. To be honest, all this "use you DS to take and customize pictures, record audio, download stuff, etc." means nothing to me. That's what my digital camera and cell phone are for. All I really care about is, how do these systems affect a strictly Pokemon gamer? If it's anything related to Pokemon, I'm interested. How does this affect which DS version I should get? Sorry for my ignorance, I really am a novice to DS in general in spite of how long it's been out.
|
Then go for a DS Lite for the GBA slot. The DSi/XL/3DS don't have one, so can't be used for migrating Pokémon from GBA games to the DS games.
It will probably be worthwhile getting a 3DS eventually, too; it has all the features of a DSi (i.e. camera support in B/W), and it's likely that the next Pokémon game after B/W will be 3DS only or 3DS enhanced. Besides, there are plenty of other good games coming for the 3DS (Pokémon isn't the only great handheld game). |
Is there a Gamershark or anything for the Japanese versions of the games?
Could you explain about camera support in B&W? What does it do with the game? So the 3DS isn't just an upgrade to DS, but the generation of Nintendo handhelds? I don't doubt there are other good games for the handhelds, but I'm just saying Pokemon is the only one I care about. BTW, quick somewhat off-topic question: are all DS games region free? GB (and I think GBA) games are, but I wanted to make sure this also went for DS. |
with the original DS and DSlite, there is no region-lock. However, the DSi, DSi XL, and eventually the 3DS, are region-locked.
|
So I could play a Japanese game on an American DSlite, but not on a 3DS?

I don't really understand what you're saying. I play Japanese Pokemon because that's how I like it, for a number of reasons.

EXCEPT FOR POKEMON, NO ONE IMPORTS SO THE REGION LOCK DOESN'T REALLY MATTER. I understand that you like the Japanese version more because you're wapanese, that doesn't mean everyone shares your beliefs. Better? ^^ |
Okay, please don't get rude with me, there's no need for that.
