iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking now legal in the U.S.

Now it is legal to jailbreak your iPhone or to unlock it for use on another GMS network without violating copyright law.

Discuss the significance of this. I think it's a win for consumers.

Everyone I know already jailbreaked(?) their iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad already so this doesn't really make a difference, but I guess it's nice.

Apple can still void your warranty if you do it.

That's true. What we might see is major GSM carriers like T-Mobile making accomidations of unlocked iPhones.

Well, yeah... all you had to do was jailbreak the phone and then put a T-Mobile SIM card into it. I don't think this will change the fact that you can only take advantage of the Edge speeds on their network, though.

That's what I meant by accomidating the iPhone more. If T-Mobile could get iPhones to run on their new HSPA+ network, that would be awesome.

Finally, now it's legal for me to use LockInfo! (for the record I knew about this since it first appeared on Ars, but neglected to make a thread here due to the party in my head about being able to finally be legally able to jailbreak my iPod for LockInfo and access to the iOS4 features that Apple blocked for 2G Touch users)

I like this development. Hopefully this the beginning of the easing of the restrictions on other products (I'm looking at you DVD backups).

FreakyLocz14 July 29th, 2010 10:39 PM

I don't see why modifying anything you purchased should be illegal granted you're not infringing on anyone's elses ability to use the product.
