Brand New iMac; Pros and Cons

I just would like the pros and cons of the iMac. The newer ones, just to add extra information, the ones with Snow Leopard.

Also, are they worth it? I am totally in love with Macs (even though I don't own one) and I think the features are absolutely fabulous. I really want to get one, but are they really worth it..?

Weeeell, I'm personally in favor of installing Mac on a PC if you're going to use Mac. So my opinion is no, it's not worth it.

The only options that are truly fantastic and set the new version aside from the previous generation are the ones that have the 2 hard drives in them. (I speak of course of the 1-2TB+256GB ssd) The real boost is that you get almost no lag because SSDs are all digital with no moving parts.

They also have a slightly better ATI graphics card than the previous iMacs, but for the money the option to have the boot SSD in combination with the high capacity traditional drive for storage is by far the best new option for the iMac line.

All Macs have Snow Leopard.

If I had enough spare money for an iMac, I'd just get a high-end ThinkPad and hackintosh it. Except I wouldn't, because I personally don't like Apple products (though that's just me).

Or just build my own desktop and hackintosh that for like $600.

Cons: its way too expensive for a freaking computer. Like, $3000+ expensive =/

Stock options don't surpass $2,000. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTAyNTQzNjA

Unless I'm not getting the exaggeration in that post.

Unless you're building a Mac pro. But by that time, I doubt money is any object.

cons: You can't play a great deal of games that require high end gaming machines, no blu-ray so you can't experience the full HD effect, over priced machines(just think alienware but not for gaming).

pros: you won't get any windows viruses well unless you install windows and get viruses on it, but you can still get bsd viruses and crap...... better use of office and design products.

Well that's about it really.

Unless you're hardcore enough to stick with PPC. :D

The 5670s aren't quite that bad. About the same as the old 8800s, I think. The problem arises from the 1680p screens. The cards are going to struggle to pump out decent frames at that res. For anything else, it's more than enough. The main reason is the the 5670 is exceptionally power-efficient, whereas the 5750, being the next step up, is a lot hungrier.

Part of what you are paying for is the architecture and the build quality. There's not a whole lot in that sort of all-in-one category that has decent specs, so that's another premium. Keep in mind that there's the OS and software license that you're paying for. If you want to compare it to a DIY build you'd have to make sure that a Windows 7 license is included.

I can't say I'm fond of Mac Office 2008. It's a step down from Windows' 2007 and can run like a dog. 2011 is turning out to be pretty damned good, from all accounts.
