Pokemon Musical

apparently, Black and White is using a minigame called Pokemon Musical as an alternative to contests and Pokeathalon. How do you think this will play out? Will the microphone be utilized? What would you like to see happen with this feature.

Just a note, New York has Broadway. Pokemon Musical? This, to me, looks like a good one up for the NYC - Isshu theory. Just sayin'.

itshamtarotime July 30th, 2010 9:10 AM

hmm sounds intresting. i hope its better than the sinnoh and hoenn contests.

Timbjerr July 30th, 2010 9:48 AM

They finally struck something cool with the pokethlon and now they're gonna go and get rid of it for a Pokemon musical? D:

Phantom Poodle July 30th, 2010 9:51 AM

I totally agree with the NYC thing; it coincides with the theories about Isshu being based on America. :D

I am actually really excited for this. I sucked at Pokethlon and Contests, except for the dancing/rhythm part. :D Hopefully, this means I will be good at something for once.

Masterge77 July 30th, 2010 9:53 AM

Musical, YUCK, I wanted Pokeathlon back, it was so fun!

Bloothump July 30th, 2010 9:57 AM

Well, at least the dress-up system looks improved. It's no longer like "Here, look, a pebble! Here, take this leaf, or this feather, and use it to dress up your pokemon!" -____-
I like the looks of these clothes!

countryemo July 30th, 2010 10:21 AM

I like the Hoenn contest best. Pokeathlon is dumb :P
But Pokemon musical? the dress up seems better. But I guess i need to see how it plays out when i play it to judge

Pokemon Musical footage starts at 2:05

orange discontent July 30th, 2010 10:27 AM

Can we actually use the "clothes" in-game or is it just for Pokemon Musical?

Well, we haven't seen any pokemon battling in clothes so far. So while it doesn't say, I don't think they're used in-game.

countryemo July 30th, 2010 11:52 AM

oh yes i saw the video, but i was talking about me and the game personally. in other words when i get to play it myself.
it looks a bit weird of what i saw in the video, i dont see a main point to it

Masterge77 July 30th, 2010 2:46 PM

It's probably the return of Pokemon Contests, We only call it a musical because they dress up fancy, If it were a musical, well, it certainly isn't a High School Musical, especially when the songs only have one word: the Pokemons name

LOl, yeah the musical could just be the name of the first part of the contest :P

ThisOrTheApocalypse July 30th, 2010 2:55 PM

Ehhh, i'm not a fan of musicals, but I won't judge before I try it out, it could be fun for all I know.

dragon0fangz July 30th, 2010 3:26 PM

HATE MUSICALS. also, where did the pokethlon go? It seems like they are going opposite of what fans want. remember the follow me feature? That was popular. remember the pokethlon? that was popular.

I always felt as though the Pokéathlon was an HG/SS feature alone. The Following Feature still has a chance of coming in for the third installment of Black and White.

I couldn't think straight when I read about Pokémon Musical this morning. I am a personal lover of Pokémon Contests. RSE had the best take of it, and then DPPt gave it a twist which was cool enough for me. However, the idea of dressing my Pokémon up and making them sing and dance seems lame, to put it sweetly. I won't judge it till I've tried it, but I just wish they would have kept Pokémon Contests in over this, or at least the Pokéathlon.

Scary part is seeing this as a major part of the anime, but that's a different story. :(

Jaiyke July 30th, 2010 4:12 PM

hmm never was a big fan of the Pokeathlon
and never got why it's so popular o.O

actually it's fun and all so whatev...
i liked the Original Contests and were quite good at them
the Super Contests were okay i guess
Pokeathlon seemed too easy and pointless for me xDD

although unlike most people here i actually LIKE Musicals
real ones like Broadway ones.. not hack ones like HSM >.>
and since they're animals it reminds me of Classic Disney XDDD which i like =P
but yeah i hope there is more to it and not JUST the Musical
that would be boring and make me try it once and forget about it =\

Astinus July 30th, 2010 8:15 PM

I like the idea. Especially the dress-up part of the whole musical. It's a lot better than the pebbles, fluff pieces, and stumps that were used for previous contests in D/P/Pt. This way of dressing-up actually makes the Pokemon look good instead of a mess of junk.

I'm more interested in seeing what else there is to the musical than just dancing. Will the player come up with dance moves/musical notes, or have to follow what the game gives them? And will there be actual Pokemon operas?

This topic makes me think of the short-lived Pokemon Live! musical.

Agent Clank July 30th, 2010 8:20 PM

I really don't know what to think of it.....
I don't really like Musicals and I didn't really like the contests in D/P/P.
The Hoenn Contests were the best,so Yeah,I might try it out but I'm not promising I'll like it.

loliwin July 30th, 2010 8:29 PM

I LOVE MUSICALS. Just hope it plays good! :D well thats all.

Bay July 30th, 2010 9:59 PM

Already said before how I didn't like the dance thing from D/P/Pt and now now liking the musical now because of two Fox shows I'm not a fan of. XD However, I guess I'll try it and see if I like it. It could be quite fun if I give it a chance.

Oh gawds, that musical. Haven't seen it, though I heard the plot of it and was able to listen to most of the songs online a while back. But yeah, if the end result of the musical is like this song:

I wouldn't mind. :P *hears fangirls scream*

Anyways...I might have to look at the trailer video again, but it looks like you'll be doing the notes, which kind makes more since then doing the dance moves. That way, you learn how to do a decent song by choosing the notes.

Kanto_Johto July 31st, 2010 4:51 AM

As a musician, I'm particularly insterested in this feature. Why can't they include this and the Pokeathlon though? I don't see why they should take it out just because this feature is being added.

I wasnt excited for it until I saw Chillarmy with an Afro.

When I saw it I thought it was just contests, because of dress-ups. LOL.
@MistahDude IKR.

myrrh25 July 31st, 2010 9:30 AM

Well. It seems that GameFreak just jizzed fangirl-ism and High School Musical 4 into their latest Pokemon games. Bring back RSE contests and get rid of this bullcrap please GameFreak.

AuraGaurdian August 1st, 2010 3:23 AM

I guess all we can do is wait and see what it turns out like

Ho-Oh August 1st, 2010 4:11 AM

I agree with those who miss the Hoenn contests, but idk, I liked putting accessories on my Pokemon in HG, so I may actually like this musical in the end. :)

I saw vids of it and I pretty much didn't know how else to form a reaction, because it was just so...silly. The pokemon just spin around, dance and whatnot...I'd rather prefer contests and stuff, thank you. D:

I agree completely. As far as it seems Pokémon Musical is just 2/3 of what DPPt's Super Contests were. In my opinion, Black and White should have just kept the Super Contests and improved it with what Black and White's Pokémon Musicals have (i.e the improved clothing and dress-up style and the upgraded dance moves). Then it proceeds to the contests round with moves. :(

I still wish they never tried to make Contests better from Third Gen. It was best as it was then and was more enjoyable being scattered across the region. Only improvement I saw was mimicking the Anime's style in contests, but that doesn't seem like it'll happen anytime soon.

GFA August 1st, 2010 3:19 PM

I just want contests. Pokeathalon was ... annoying and a pointless introduction, and this'll just be worse yet.

I disliked R/S/E contests. They were slow and frustrating. I thought pokemon contests from D/P/Pt were okay, but still were missing something. I liked Pokeathalon a lot, because it was very interactive. That's why I think Pokemon Musical will be fun, interactivity. I'm not sure if we'll be using the microphone to sing, but it seems like an expanded version of the dance portion from Pokemon. We've seen a thirty second clip of the feature, but I'm positive there's more to it than that. I feel you people need to relax. This is not HSM. It's just a little minigame in an attempt to attract girls to the game. I'm sure you don't have to participate in it.

Also, to whoever talked about HGSS features, those features are for those games. If every game had Pokeathlon and Follow me, why would anyone be interested in HGSS? Those are features put into a remake to give it more lasting appeal. Follow me was fun for that game. But most OW sprites are ugly and not everyone wants to walk with their pokemon 24/7/ I think in stead of relying on old tricks, pokemon is doing the right thing by trying new ideas. People complain about every Pokemon game being too similar. Reusing the same features only contributes to that.

Aro-kun August 1st, 2010 4:58 PM

I've been like Ash when it comes to contest. Rarely you would see me in a pokemon contest. But Pokeathalon, that's a different story! I want pokeathalon back T.T I guess i'll try this musical thing, but i'm not a fan of musicals...

Hopefully they'll make musicals available through wi-fi as well (Which they should have done for contests and pokeathalon...C'mon Game freak, Whats the matta whichus?). Would have been more to do.

Charizardomination August 4th, 2010 8:14 PM

This is stupid the pokemon are dancing like stupid idiots. Theyre just addiing this for the sake of saying everythings new so that people will buy the games. Its an awful idea and they need to expand on the the faults of the games not start adding crap no one wants.

orange discontent August 4th, 2010 8:42 PM

If the Pokemon break dance, I would so play Pokemon Musical.

I agree with this. The Pokeathalon was ok, Super Contests weren't even close to being super (IMO), and the 3rd generation contests were the best. I did those all the time, and I've collected all the Hoenn contest ribbons. :3

Patatas Fritas August 5th, 2010 2:32 AM

Ohh, this looks interesting.

I must admit, I would like the RSE Contests back, I enjoyed them, but the DPPt were good too!
It's sad they're getting rid of the Pokéathlon however... But, we don't know this for certain, do we, they could always have the Pokéathlon somewhere else? I doubt it though.

Good thing I love musicals! I can't wait to try this out!

Bay August 5th, 2010 8:42 AM

Pokebeach has some new footage of the Pokemon musical from Legendary Pokemon. There's some footage of the deer Pokemon first though, so you won't see the musical until around the 0:55 mark.

Have to say, it does look cute, though I'm still wondering a couple of things. I know for sure you'll dress up your Pokemon first. Wondering though if you'll be also making music somehow first or you'll be dancing while the music plays. I still think you might go make the music first, like choosing musical notes.

Valrog August 5th, 2010 8:46 AM

Oh nice. pokemon musical.. im guessing it'll be a mic one. or one of those hanah montana games.. where u click the notes and the pokemon will dance whenever u click the right one lol.

Guy August 6th, 2010 7:59 AM

The extra video clip on Pokémon Musicals was decent. It wasn't much more from what we already knew, but the music was nice. I just think this is going to be a new way to take better use of the touch screen. Contests handled the touch screen slightly, then the Pokéathlon took it to the next level. I think to compete with this, Pokémon Musicals will take the touch screen compatibility even further. Kind of hard to tell what's really going on with the player since all they show us is the music and dancing Pokémon and not what really goes on at the bottom screen for us. I'm warming up to the idea though, and I figure I'll give it a try at least.

Yeah, was thinking that too. It would be nice if we see what's going on at the bottom of the screen to get a better idea how to do the Pokemon Musical. Guess we'll know more info about the Pokemon Musical in this month's CoroCoro issue most likely.

Pancake86 August 6th, 2010 3:17 PM

MUSICAL!
Brings me back to when I used to do the school plays.
Now with POKEMON!
I'm going to have my Pokemon sing "The Last Midnight" from "Into the Woods" just for noglastic reasons...or maybe "If I were a Bell" from "Guys and Dolls" *shot*

But in all seriousness, I think it'll just be a side quest and/or a replacements for the contests. *shurg* Like someone else here on this topic that i'm too lazy to quote, it's just to get girly girls into the Pokemon franchise as well. Good luck with this Game-Freak. Please please PLEASE don't let us down.

But in all OTHER seriousness, please don't let us down with...oh I don't know...THE MAIN GAME ITSELF?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

GlitchCity August 7th, 2010 6:33 AM

Frankly I dont really care about the musicals, just like I didnt care for sinnohs contests (the killed hoenns contests). I guess the musicals are for the younger players like my 9 year old sister. Its good that gamefreak are expanding their side minigame ideas.

mrunner4home August 7th, 2010 9:18 AM

some of you are complaining that the musical would be stupid, and to bring back the pokeathlon. personally, I agree. a musical thing would be weird. it looks like they're bringing something like the contests back, which were not very entertaining. because I want to believe that they'll bring the pokeathlon back:

maybe the musical is just one of the pokeathlon minigames...?

Bloothump August 9th, 2010 8:18 AM

New Details on Pokemon Musical:
If you do well, the audience may give you a gift of sorts
you can download music to use in pokemon musical. (I believe it is stated that you use High Link to do this? I don't remember. I think the SD card sounds more plausible. Anyway, can you imagine downloading something like, Candy Shop by 50 cent and watching your pokemon dance to that?)
It takes place in "The Music Hall"
All costumes and props are stored inside an item called The Goods Case.

Åzurε August 9th, 2010 9:30 AM

Props to the preview people for putting Tsutaja in a cane and top hat. Smugleaf is canon!

Also, songs are apparently downloadable off the Global Link. Reminds me of Rock Guitar Band Hero With A Turntable. Although, I doubt it will end up having such a selection.

JAK3 August 9th, 2010 9:44 AM

This is such a cool Idea, but to be honest, Gen 3 had the best Mini-Game of all. Just the plain and simple Pokemon Contest, nothing more.

Air Pichu August 9th, 2010 9:46 AM

I liked the Pokeathlon best. It was fun haha. I'll have to see how this will play out, but I hope this'll provide something cool.

Logiedan August 9th, 2010 12:19 PM

Pokéathlon was far better than this. I'll have to give this one a try though,by the looks of the video(s). There's not much to do,it looks sort of a rendition of the DPPt contests. Mostly the dressing up part anyway.

Bloothump August 9th, 2010 7:45 PM

How can you say that Pokeathlon was better when you haven't even played Pokemon Musical yet? But I have to say, from what we've seen, the quality I'm guessing will be somewhere between Pokeathlon and RSE contests.

austy14 August 9th, 2010 10:54 PM

I like it cus it looks like the dancing is a little mmore interactive, like combo moves and stuff instead of pressing a direction. Though there could be more to it then cool costumes and dancing!

Niprop August 10th, 2010 12:18 AM

WTB Tyranitar, Nidoking, Rhyperior, and Aggron having a sing-off! Wit top hats, of course!

King Gumball August 10th, 2010 2:14 AM

I can't wait for this! Musicals look great. I love how you can dress up your pokemon better than in previous contests.

Cherrim August 10th, 2010 6:10 AM

I'm a bit undecided about this. On the one hand, they had something so good with the Pokéathlon and I wish they'd do something similar to that. But I did kind of like contests in DPPt (much more so than in RSE, anyway) and if they build on that idea and take out the battling part (which I always hated), I'd be fine with musicals. n_n;

It looks interesting but sounds lame. We'll see what wins out in the end, haha.

Nina August 10th, 2010 12:52 PM

I never ever equated contests and the pokeathelon in the same criteria.
One is just a handful of mini-games, and the other actually uses the pokemon's moves and status you get by making poffin/pokeblocks.

If this was an extension of the dancing/dress up part of DPPt contests, but not the ONLY part of it, I would be ecstatic! But it doesn't look like it.
I liked having a strategy to contests! It just takes some work to get some good poffins on a pokemon, play around with the dress up, and just a little mini-game with the button dancing, but the real part I loved was the move times. You had to use your brain and you couldn't "master" it like you can mini-games, there was a little bit of a challenge.

Charizard★ August 10th, 2010 1:12 PM

It seems interesting. Hopefully it is as good as it sounds XD
