NO ELITE FOUR... tournament style

i was thinking for black and white, game freak should ditch the traditional elite four, and have a pokemon isshu leauge tournament, like in the anime.. it was a tournament bracket type thing.. i always thought that would be cool

like a 16 man bracket

different arenas you battle at.. fire arena increase fire pokemon's stats, water arena increases water pokemon's stats

i always thought that would be cool, base the final battles in the game, off the anime.. a tournament style, with different arena's etc....

what do you think

Kirbychu July 31st, 2010 8:41 PM

I've always loved this idea. What would be great is if it was structured like the Ever Grande conference, with over 600 participants. 16 is a bit small.

rockman0 July 31st, 2010 8:43 PM

I think that would be awesome. Maybe all of the trainers could be at the levels that the E4 is at, or maybe even higher and you get a certain amount of health back for each Pokemon, or maybe even fully healed Pokemon.

Also, whoever wins has to beat the current champ to claim the title. I love it! Please do this GF!

600 is a little to big lol...

i think a good number would be around 20..... what do you think??

shininglatios217 July 31st, 2010 8:47 PM

I have always wanted that in a Pokémon Game. And maybe when you defeat the Pokémon League the first time it could give you the option to be on a Wi-Fi League. I hope they use those ideas.

EDIT: About an ideal number, maybe 32 like the FIFA World Cup.

That's hardly any battling though. 3: The Ever Grande conference went by quickly, especially since the prelims were one on one for the very first match, two on two for the next 3, then the last 16 have full battles.

rocky505 July 31st, 2010 8:52 PM

This is the games not the anime .The tournaments are for the anime. Tournaments are for the BF in the games.

how many was their in PBR? BW should feature double that. I remember feeling it was kind of short.

Also, it would be cool if it was round-robin where you gain 1 point for each loss, and 2 for each win. People who tied could battle it out in an elimination tournament or tie breaker match.

600 is before the preliminaries.

Anyway, the starting number should be AT LEAST 32, since that means it will take 5 matches for any trainer to become Champion... Just like the previous games.

32 ==> 16 ===> 8 ===> 4 ===> 2 ===> 1

That being said, there still SHOULD be an Elite Four of Isshu. They should all be "equally matched" in skill and not be ranked, like the original Elite Four should have been. I just don't think it's fair how some of the Elite Four trainers are "better" than others just because they came afterward in the Champion League.

Umbrella July 31st, 2010 9:09 PM

That would be ahhmazing! I always liked seeing Ash battle the different trainers at the Indigo Plateau.

Bloothump July 31st, 2010 9:17 PM

It'd be cool. But in the anime you get breaks between your matches. The whole point to the E4 is to have 5 consecutive battles with 5 of the strongest trainers you've faced yet. And I know someone would say "Ohh well just take the breaks out!" ...Well that's the same as the E4 only without typed teams. The E4 has typed teams so they leave as few types out as possible.
I mean, I'm not saying I'd dislike a tournament style Pokemon League. I'd probably enjoy it if the trainer designs and teams are cool. But that would mean randomized trainers and fields, which I don't know if GF wants to do. We'll have to wait and see, it could happen.

GlalieX July 31st, 2010 9:18 PM

How about a tournament before you can challenge the Elite Four? That seems the best to me. All you'd have to do is level up the E4 trainers and Champion. Of course, we all know a tournament would be rigged so you'd always end up facing your rival in the finals.

That's what happens in the Anime (according to first seasons).

Ninja Caterpie July 31st, 2010 9:23 PM

It could work. Maybe you have to beat the Elite Four in order to qualify for this, then there are, say, 32 people that get through.

Then, you'd have to go through 5 battles with the opponents having pre-set moves (something like the Battle Frontier, with strategies getting better as you progress through the tourney) and Pokemon at the same level as your top. That'd be nice, I reckon.

Pandemonioum July 31st, 2010 9:47 PM

Yeah, Ash has lot to do in Anime. He has never beaten any league, and when you beat league, league champion can challenge the Elite Four of respective league and when beaten the Elite Four he can become Champion of the region, if he wins the standing champion. That is how it should work in the game too.

But I wonder what is Pokemon Master accually, is it the Champion who has beaten all champions of the all the other regions?

I would love this to game:

Elite Four Tournament [League] ---> Elite Four ---> Champion

Not just:

Elite Four ---> Champion

It is not like everyone who get 8 badges get to challenge them :P

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE August 1st, 2010 4:39 AM

I think it'd be cool to have BOTH the Elite Four and also some kind of Tournament.

Gymnotide August 1st, 2010 4:43 AM

To be honest, the tournament role in the games is taken over by the fact that (1) there aren't even 600 trainers in the games and (2) the tournament is actually all the battles that happen before you reach the Elite Four grounds.

Of course, it would be great if we could have a more anime-like operation like what was previously mentioned (with the tournament before the Elite Four).

Itstoppedatumbreon August 1st, 2010 5:50 AM

it wud be gd is BW hadlike 32 ppl ina knockout tourney, and if you win that then you have the chance to face E4

also after the national dex, you could go to the orange island on a plane orsumin and do that
Or maybe thats the game after BW???
I would love an Orange island game on 3DS

That's what I would like. I enjoy the E4, but I'd love to mix it up a bit too. So both would be great to have.

It kind of answers itself.
They'll keep the Elite 4, (almost) certainly. Since it's a tradition, they probably won't change it. While a tournament concept would be cool... I'd be happier if it were like the Battle Dome, in Pokemon Emerald.
Basing stuff off the Anime is not the way to go. The anime... sorta misrepresents the games. They are not canon, therefore you won't see m/any aspects from the Anime in the games.
I think a tournament would be cool, but I do like the Elite 4 too.

Still, to have a tournament where the opponents are randomly generated to stay fresh… you'd still need to have memorable people. I mean, the Elite Four itself are pretty memorable since they have personalities and such, and trainers… mostly don't.

I dunno, I think if there was no Elite Four and just a tournament challenge in the end, it'd mean several painful battles to get to the top than just five. Rather than replace them, what if there was this whole "once every ___ weeks/months/years" associated to a sidequest sort of tournament? That'd make it feel interesting. On top of that, it'd add more than the Elite Four to the "ultimate goal" of the games.

I like this idea a lot, I would also love to see the Battle Dome return.

Masterge77 August 1st, 2010 9:14 AM

The games are meant to be completely diffrent and distinct from the anime, there will be an Elite Four, and there will be a Dark Gym..... well, we hope.....

polkop August 1st, 2010 9:17 AM

That will be totally awesome.
When you re-challenge the tournament, you always battle against different people.

GFA August 1st, 2010 9:19 AM

Yes, but in the Anime the tournament is only to see whose capable of battling against the E4.

Planetes. August 1st, 2010 9:39 AM

I think there should be a tournament you fight in to QUALIFY for the Elite Four like in the anime

Storm_has_formed August 1st, 2010 10:00 AM

I am starting to like the idea of having an updated battle dome in Black or White instead of having a tournament replace the E4

Zeturic August 1st, 2010 4:36 PM

People suggest this before every game that comes out. And, yet, it hasn't happened.

The Gyms and Elite Four system are part of the backbone of the games. I don't see them ever getting changed. Some things shouldn't be changed just for the sake of saying "Look, it's different!".

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire August 1st, 2010 4:49 PM

Well instead of randomly generated Characters we can have all of our rivals/friends, N, Beru, Cheren, the prof., our gender counter part, etc ;)

Charizard632 August 1st, 2010 4:58 PM

This might happen. Keep the traditional elite four and add in the tournament mode as an extra. You know, tournament mode has been in Pokemon Battle Revolution, in Crystal colosseum.

shininglatios217 August 1st, 2010 5:00 PM

And you forgot to mention the Battle Dome in Pokémon Emerald.

TheNewRocketMovement August 18th, 2010 5:06 AM

I'd like to see them have both tournaments and an elite four in Black and White, here's what I'd like to see.

After 4 badges you can compete in the Bronze tournament.
After 6 badges you can compete in the Silver tournament.
After 8 badges you can compete in the Gold tournament.
Then after beating all three tournaments, you face the Elite Four.

coolnick37 August 18th, 2010 5:52 AM

I like the idea of the tournament, but I dont think it would fit nicely with E4 and champion, Id love to see it as a part of a story that has nothing to do with pokemon league, maybe something after u beat the elite four. But not in the way like battle frontier, it should have its own story too. a new challenge besides pokemon league.

maybe they add an extra area, in which they could make something like this

Amore August 18th, 2010 5:59 AM

I like the above idea. However, I like how it was explained in the R/S Chapter of Pokemon Special/Adventures.

They had it that, if you won the tournament, you weren't champion until you battled the Elite Four, then the Champion, and won.

And you could have it where, during the tournament all pokemon are fully restored after each battle, but the Elite Four is just like all previous ones - no healing, etc.

A message for the OP: Why put "NO ELITE FOUR", instead of "No Elite Four?". In my eyes, at least, you look immature doing that.

I agree, this would be an excellent thing to add as a post-game quest. I also like the Bronze, Silver, and Gold tournament idea.

Matt-O August 18th, 2010 10:49 AM

I think a tournament of 32 people would be good. 16 is a bit small for me and 64 is too much. 32 would be 5 rounds so about the same as the E4 but just a bit less predictable. Besides, we can't be the only trainer running around with the goal of becoming champ.

Gardenia101 August 18th, 2010 12:01 PM

lol I was just thinking about this, and then I saw this thread!

I really want that to happen; it would be even cooler if we can even see Ash and his friends in it, too.

We aren't...but we beat them all in the Victory Road and they realize they are too weak to go on if they can't beat us...some are lost in the cave >_>

Scorpio219 August 18th, 2010 1:33 PM

i thgink ur pokemon should be healed after each match but u cant use revives or items from ur bag, only hold items

That seems like a fair trade off :)

Shadow-Star August 18th, 2010 5:05 PM

I like this idea, it would be new and more interesting than just battling 4 people + a champ

knook August 18th, 2010 6:00 PM

Or just have the Elite Four be like in the Adventures Manga, you become the champion and they start to try and take you down... This means even after the tournament is won, a whole new story starts.

Åzurε August 18th, 2010 7:43 PM

Needs moar postgame. Always. I like the idea of having other trainers want to fight you after becoming the champion, and although I don't see a tournament replacing the E4 actually happening, I'd be so happy it they incorporated it in a Battle Frontier or something similar.

Hypno August 18th, 2010 7:51 PM

I just wish that once you become the champ, people recognize you as the champ and more skilled trainers replace the ones that used to be on the road before you reached fame.

Kanto_Johto August 20th, 2010 9:39 AM

I would only agree with this if it were a Tournament deciding who progresses to the Elite 4. Otherwise, no. The Elite 4 is designed to put your skills as a trainer to the test, and thus is made to be difficult.

People complain about the 10 level gap between the last Gym Leader and the first member of the Elite 4. I actually wish the gap was larger and gave us more to work for. That way we feel a greater sense of accomplishment once we've beaten them.

I beat the E4 on Pearl first time, with only 3 fainted Pokemon, having used about 1 Revive and only 3 Full Restores in the entire run. Needless to say, I was very, very dissapointed. I expected a lot more out of them.

I'd be very happy if the Champion's Pokemon peaked at Level 75 or so on the first challenge.

kinu August 20th, 2010 10:49 AM

i would love the tournament but if you win you can fight the eleight four

Alamos August 20th, 2010 1:31 PM

I agree with both Kanto and Kinu.

We need a challenge and if they were to do this (which i doubt) it would really be fun!
