»Introduction


G'Day and welcome to my project, Pokemon Lilac. This can probably be considered a revamp of my original hack (Shimmering Tempest), except it is of a higher quality and will hopefully be released. It is set at the same time as G/S/C, but in the brand new region of Lowen.

»Story


It has been a long time coming, but you are now ready to take on a Pokemon adventure across your home region. You're all set to recieve your Pokemon from Professor Oak a larger neighbouring town when your mother informs you that Oak is investigating the nearby Haplon Cave system. Upon your arrival at the caves, a small earthquake shakes the earth around you and a local hiker insists that the fleeing Pokemon demonstrate that it is too dangerous to progress. Once things settle down, you are given the all-clear signal and are allowed to continue to the next town. Inside the cave you come into contact with a determined Professor Oak, spying on a suspicious charcter further into the cave.

The man is no other than a member of the villainous Team Rocket which was thought to have been disbanded three years ago under their leader, Giovanni. Why are Team Rocket snooping around a small cave in Lowen? Why does a shady character continuously follow your every move? Why is your rival so mad at you, despite being friendly for many years beforehand?

The life of a rookie can be a tough one...

No, that is a completely different hack - I'm remaking my only hack that was ever put up here which was called Shimmering Tempest.

Nah, I won't be changing them, apart from one or two which are central to the story.

Hey! I was wondering if you were going to make a new hack or revive the old one. You're an amazing hacker, and I'm already impressed by the graphics specifically!

P.S. - I'm sorry I accidentally sort of took your hack name a while ago. I was brand new to hacking, and I had no idea that Shimmering Tempest existed. But I did, think it was funny when DuoRyan said:

The grass animation pallette is but you need to change the shape in tile molester, unless you've already done so (in which case the screenshots say otherwise).

Incredible! This looks amazing graphics, mapping, and scripting wise. The OW sprite of the player looks great and the battle background is nice. I'll be waiting for a release.

There were no additional tiles that showed movement with this, so I have had to use the default grass 'tufts' when you move as its animation. I actually think it look fine like this as it is graphically similar to the animation of the grass in HGSS anyway.

Well, I progressed a little further during the night and started mapping the innards of Frigid Cavern so a small update is in order:

Hmmm... The Mapping is Good... All i can see here is no scripts yet'

Can you post more pics of Figid Cavern? I like the graphics of it.. It gives me the CHILLS' :D:D

BTW, Good luck on this one' I know it's a lot of time and effort but it's all worth it cause many people will recognize you and most importantly, appreciate what you have done!

The tiles certainly are your strong point, as are your maps. If the scripting matches how good the graphics are, then this hack will be brilliant! I love the ice cave, but something is annoying me about that snow patch... Just seems too bright, but that isn't something worth worrying about, as I just need to get used to it. I wish you all the best.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. It isn't too bright. Probably just me. Seemed like it because of the dark floor, and then suddenly bright white snow.

That's what I was aiming for :D

I don't want to show off too much, so I'm afraid you'll have to be in the dark for now. But I can tell you that I have finished the mapping and scripting of Frigid Cavern and I am now up to the third city :3

Thanks very much Banjora. And no, its not just you - I though that it was too bright as well when I looked over it later, so you can be assured that it is now slightly darker and doesn't contrast as much with the blue floor :D

Love pretty much everything about this hack; definitely one of, if not the, best hacks currently floating about in Progressing Hacks. I would have one complaint, though:

In that screenshot all the mountains are grey; however, the small rock is brown. I don't know, that seems a wee bit inconsistent in my opinion. Either way, good luck Doctor Fujeh.

As my final act before leaving for three days, I thought I would quickly give some screenshots even though I seem to have a million and should really cut down on the unecessary ones. They are an early shot of the player in the third city and the first move tutor whose will teach a Pokemon Endure in Frigid Cavern. I have a plan for something to happen before you can learn Endure, but I haven't implemented it yet... fufufu...

The cave water seems, i dunno off? It doesn't look much like water, maybe it's too dark? It just doesn't seem right to me.

There is nothing wrong with the cave water tiles at all. I guess I could increase the contrast, but I see the colour scheme as being perfectly fine at this point.

I didn't do as much as I thought as I would over the weekeend, but I was able to complete two maps which had been giving me some trouble previously and change some tiles from earlier. Did anyone say beach party? :P

Finally, you have shown what you've been doing all along behind your desktop, huh? (yeah, not comment here, I saw this today the first time)

Everything about this is great, and geez, you kept the ows! these were my first sucessful overworlds! I'm feeling a bit iffy about them atm, but never mind, maybe if you also showed a scene with the backsprite/trainer card on <3

About tiles, you revamped everything? that's a lot of work, and it seems to have paid off. Great job, Mr.Anderson!

Update: I'm mapping out the game's big forest (Frickle Forest), but I haven't progressed far enough to get some early screenshots due to the return of school which will be slowing down my progress God, I was getting so much stuff done at a cracking pace during the holidays. I've also added a fun script in Fleetwood that could result in you getting a rare Pokemon.

There is a way to solve that problem. Don't worry.
Just simply go to OW Editor and make black outlines to the hair.
That should do it.

Hehe... Its funny that you should say that, as it is suppossed to be a bit creepy, as shown in the first screenshot further down. I've cut out some of the text cause I'm cool like that, but the message is d simple: Something is lurking within the forest...

Yeah, now that I look back on it, the player's hair could use some refining - I'll fix that in abit unless you'd like to do the honours, NiKa?

Update: 5 Hours after saying I had nothing to show, I've scrounged up two screenshots to show that I've actually been doing stuff. I'm planning to test whether I should slightly lighten the Frickle Forest trees or not, so the second screenshot is tentativly confirmed.

Whoa! Very quick Updates MrFuji! This Hack is going very well.. hehehe..

BTW, can you darken the grass at Frickle Forest grass to match the dark
trees. It'll give it a more creepy look. :D

And also, you can put dead trees if you want too. BTW, just a suggestion. :P

Nice job with the Hack! I know you're working slowly but surely to
avoid certain bugs and glitches.. :D

Actually, I can't do either of them - If I change the palette for the grass, it will affect the pallete for the rest of the game as well. I've also reached the limit of tiles that I can use in the forest tile slot, so it is impossoble for me to insert anymore D:

Update:

Firstly, if check the first post, you will notice that there is now some CSS. This was made by Dedaelus and I'm very happy to have him smarten it up even though it means the removal of the tcat which Manny luuurves ;D

Secondly, I have created a world map - The style was heavily based on WesleyFG's map to save tiles space and I really like its simplicity. Please note that this is not inserted at the moment.


Thirdly, I have inserted all D/P/Pt/HG/SS sprites, excluding alternate form Pokemon (Unown, Deoxys etc) and the R/S/E legendary trio. This isn't a huge or completed accomplishment, but I thought it might as well be known.

Finally, I got off my arse and made a supporter bar. Use it as you please and link it to the thread if you wish to wear it :D

Yeah, I like the new CSS, but that map up there isn't detailed enough, like the cities aren't very different looking as they all have the same circle there. But that's in my opinion. Ultimately, it's up to you.

Update:

As I said earlier, I haven't had much time recently, but the release of B/W has really given me some good ideas (with one set to shape my storyline better than what I had originally planned). I'm pretty excited about it all :3

Anyway, I've found some cute critters from the new games, resized them and have inserted most into the ROM at this point. There will now be 28 B/W Pokemon residing the Lowen region for you to catch and raise as your own. They will have altered movesets and evolutionary stages since some need to be traded in order to evolve. Here's a a screen of me testing with them:

Here is another awesome update. What amazed me
the most is the tiles in the lab. Very nice tiles and
graphics.

It matches the scripting well. The B/W pokemons
are also great. Many hackers right now are going
to feature them.

Well, I've been waiting a while to make this (The first Gym of Lowen) despite the fact I had shown you its exterior before. I never had a good idea of what I construct the Gym with, as in puzzles and such, but I've always wanted to use these tiles and I finally got an excuse :D

I've been working at a million miles an hour over the past two days - Inserting well over a bazillion scripts to fully flesh out the storyline as well as mapping a new city and my favourite route so far. All of the scripting for these two areas have been completed, whilst I added a two-piece event in Frickle Forest that is integral to how it will all be played out.

I am currently working on the last route of the beta, but my time will be severly constrained over the coming month and there is more stuff for me go back over again.

Have some screenies of Frickle Forest, Route 4 and Poliberg - The home of the Lowen Police Force Head Quarters.

Nah, the old textbox wasn't working out unlike yours which is brilliant so I've reverted to the original style for the time being. I will change them to something else eventually, but for now this will do.

Watching that Cloud Temple video gave me these weird chills. It's so cool that this hack ties in to the Generation II story. I definitely want to see more! :D

I only have one question, though: why is Oak the professor? I can understand Team Rocket being there because Giovanni vanished, so you're doing a continuation kind of thing, but due to the time period you set this game in, Oak was in Johto. It doesn't make much sense why he's there.

Oak isn't in the region for the entire game - He is only present at the beginning to do the rounds of his Lowen lab before returning to Kanto/ Johto. Minor update: I'm finishing off my exam period in two days so I can get back to working on Lilac on a regular basis pretty soon. Over the weekend I have inserted a new textbox, made the game far more de-capitalised than what it was and created a small event at the beginning which will introduce a recurring character who will be sure to push you all the way in your quest to be a Pokemon Master. Possible screenies up soon.

At this point all I can really do is polish what is on the ROM and go over a few things which I have neglected earlier on :D

I always thought about what I was inserting and made sure that there was a similar pallete before I put anything in - That's all about you can do when inserting a lott of tiles.

It has finally happened - Lilac Beta 1 has been released. It has two gyms and has a Rocket event, ending once you recieve HM05.


Known Bugs/ Unfinished Stuff:
  • The Pokedex screen has a corrupted block that has weird colours and makes it hard to read the text. This can only be seen when catching Pokemon and is not present when opened from the menu.
  • B/W Pokemon cries aren't inserted.
  • Youngster CJ's backsprite is an old man (lol).
  • You MAY experience trouble when trying to enter the building where you recieve your starter. The music must be turned on in some cases to advance.
  • The bag changes pallete when the Town Map is closed after opening.
I'd also like to thank Quilava's Master, Manipulation, NiKaNoRoU, icychill66 and Vrai for offering to test this beta and helping to find all of my flaws :D

I've played a little bit of the Beta, and I've seemed to hit a snag. I found Oak in the cave, and followed him to Bolderville, but after he entered the Trade building (thus after the guy offered me the egg), I went into the Trade Building, and notyhing happened. I roamed the town a bit, and, trying to leave to the south caused me to be stopped by that Youngster- whereas I could freely wander into the grass to the West of town. I encountered a Pokemon, having none of my own, and I fainted. Could this have been a problem on my part, or is there a slight problem with it?

As NiKa said, that was reported once during testing but it was found that you were able to progress by turning on the sound.

I like how there's a big chance of finding a shiny in the crate on the shore of Fleetwood.
And, I have an idea! Can you make it so that sometimes when you run over a flower, some kind of bug or flower Pokemon can attack you. If you were to do that, this would be the first game that has that feature.

Yeah, that would be an interesting feature, but I'd prefer to keep my flowers as they are. I already have a lot of grass in some parts, so I wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone else by making them avoid flower tiles If their Pokemon are injured or something.

this hack looks veryyyy promisiingg! :D i really like the palm trees, and the flattish trees that you used, as well as the ability to capture shiny pokemon. this is the first hack i've evurr seen that has those, unless i've just never been lucky enough to get them. xD
i am really looking forward to playing this once i find the time. :)))

There are a couple of other hacks that allow players to catch shiny Pokemon is specific areas, so its not like you can't find better other hacks that have that feature. I hope you enjoy it when you play it :)


Finally got a header for updates and whatnot Credits to PokemononTrainerd for this and part of my sig.

Anyway, I won't be doing much in the coming days due to Christmas and responsibilities with family and friends, so here is a minor update. Route 6 is beginning to take shape, where a character from you'll meet a character from your past (As seen in this screenshot). It will most likely change soon, as I don't like the placement of the bridge D:


I'm also planning to go over all of the flags already present in the ROM, seeing as I rarely wrote down which ones I used so most of them have no discernable order.

Also, on the route south of Stilwal town, past the cut tree, there is a guy who has a double battle with you and uses two Miltanks. However, the battle ends when you defeat only one of The Miltanks. I'll upload a screenshot of it when I'm not feeling lazy >;O
Also if I had beat his other Miltank my Quilava would have evolved.

Yup.

Hmm... That's quite strange. He isn't indicated as being a double battle in A-Trainer, yet he is behaving that way in your game. Thanks for that bug though, I'll fix it soon.

I'm having an issue playing the beta. I have the sound activated because I saw someone else had the same problem. When professor oak goes into the trade building and I follow him, absolutely nothing happens. I'm unable to progress further than that because I am not given a pokemon. If I go left from the town and run into the grass, I automatically lose because I don't have a pokemon.

Ok, I looked at this soley because it was in the top two (at the time of this posting) for HotM. Until I looked at it, I was wondering why in the world people liked this game over Super Rising Thunder. (Personally, I still like that one better) But this is still awesome. Now that I've seen pictures, videos... This is certainly a strong contender. I love how you added that broadcast from the "official" game. It made me want to actually play it, and a few bonus points. I wish you luck on your hack, and I really, really hope you stick with it until the end. This hack is going into my supported hacks, and that's saying something, as I don't normally like the hacks that follow the tried-and-true story of town-based, TR enemy gameplay. You sir, are awesome. I'm glad I visited. =)

Sorry for not replying for a long time, but I've been taking some time off working on Lilac since my last update and I didn't really want to comment on it while I wasn't working.

I have a plan that will hopefully circumvent this sort of problem in the beginning. While I haven't implimented yet, I might release a slightly updated beta which will allow people with affected ROMs to progress.

I'm sorry for any inconveniece caused :)

I'm glad that you're enjoying Lilac even if you like SRT more so thanks for commenting :)

There is a reason for the G/S/C broadcast in the game as I plan on it being a major storypoint. Thanks for the compliments and supporting Lilac, it is very much appreciated :D

The problem happens before the patching. As soon as I choose the ips file with LunarIps it says "unable to open the file for reading".

The initial file is WinRAR (Somewhat similar to a .zip) which is free and easy to download if you search for it in Google.

As for putting you in game, I'd prefer to know a person more before taking that step.

I found a Bug When you enter the Lowen Police Headquarter building or whatever its called Go to the girl in the counter at left side then open your bag and close it after that you'll find yourself controlling the girl instead your own character..Proof:

Thanks, I've sorted them all out on the ROM I'm working on right now. The random guy after the second Gym is suppossed to give you an indication of where to go next (Frickle Forest) but for some reason he didn't hide on your game (But can you tell me if he activated?).

It would have been nice if you posted the tile errors, but thanks for bringing these problems to my attention :3
