Pokemon Yellow "Starters"

okay, so we all know that you can't beat Brock with Pikachu, you have to catch others and raise them up to beat him. I'm just curious as to which one(s) you guys used to beat brock. I caught a Nidoran, raised him up, evolved him, and now i use my Nidoking more than Pikachu. anybody do anything similar to that? 8)

yeah, actually i caught both Nidoran but i ended up going with Nidoking because he seemed stronger.

PokeLawry August 9th, 2010 9:49 AM

He really suprised me. He's super good, i honestly don't think i've used one before this. haha.

i don't think i have either, and i honestly don't think i've trained an eevee as high as the one i did on yellow. lv54

Emlam August 9th, 2010 1:07 PM

A lot of Yellow 'mons learn Fighting attacks early, once I used Mankey and once Nidorino (his Attack is higher than the female's, all the better to cut through a Rock type's Defense). The first time I'm pretty sure I just went with Butterfree, since Special attacks don't need to be as strong with Brock.
Nidoking's one of my faves for his crazy cool movepool (I just give him the TM's I have left over :P ), and Butterfree can't do much so Nido's usually my choice.

JakeyBoy August 9th, 2010 1:11 PM

7 year old me's solution:
  • Grind Pikachu to level 20
  • Teach it Slam
  • Continue grinding until it can take out Brock
  • ???
  • Profit!

Modern day me would probably catch a Mankey, Maybe a Nidoran or two for backup.

Emlam August 9th, 2010 1:52 PM

Heh, I really didn't like Pikachu or I might've tried that too. I know I preferred using Charmeleon on Brock instead of just raising something more effective.

Mankey's the better choice since it gets STAB for fighting attacks, but for some reason I just never liked Mankey so I went for other Pokemon. -_-'
To this day I've only bothered raising a Primeape once.

PokeLawry August 9th, 2010 1:55 PM

Pokemon Yellow was the first pokemon game i ever got. and I couldnt get past Brock, FOREVER, so 9-year-old Me's solution to THAT was to trade my lapras over from Blue. and kick some ass. :)

Emlam August 9th, 2010 2:07 PM

I could never trade 'cuz I only had one GB. D:

Planetes. August 9th, 2010 3:55 PM

not if he learns iron tail! lol jk that's a gen 3 move, but I used Mankey to defeat Brock.

PokeLawry August 9th, 2010 5:25 PM

I only had (Still have) one. But thank god i had friends with one. :)

Skaterzpenguin August 9th, 2010 5:43 PM

Yes, I use to catch a Mankey since its a fighting type which has more of an advantage over rock types. Male nidoran from yellow can learn double kick too! He's always a good choice as well.. .

I didn't know a single person who had one, except for my cousins half the country away. >.<

Red1530 August 9th, 2010 7:18 PM

I went the Butterfree rout to defeat Brock on all my play thorough.

.Hoenn August 9th, 2010 7:26 PM

Im doing a pikachu monotype, and i just used double-team+Quick Attack

it was easy as hell

Emlam August 9th, 2010 7:37 PM

Yeah, to be fair Brock *is* the easiest gym after Surge just because his Pokemon have terrible attacks. :P

Weavile05 August 9th, 2010 7:53 PM

I remember when i used a mankey, then I stupidly taught KarateChop over Low Kick cuz I thought it was fighting type move (I actually played Gen IV first) then I used it against a Geodude and i was like "wait a minute... ah crap!"

Emlam August 9th, 2010 7:57 PM

Ohhh, Normal Karate Chop was such a terrible typing decision. XD

ORegan August 9th, 2010 9:26 PM

trade mewtwo over from red version. :X I had red on my birthday, my little brother got blue on his, and me and both my brothers got Yellow for christmas, and we all had gameboys and one linkcable to trade with. Nothing says screw the game mechanics, I have a disobiediant level 100 legendary better than using it against a level 15 onix. The only bad thing is that mewtwo barely listened to me. >:[

RubyHacker August 10th, 2010 4:24 AM

I used a Nidoran,I grew him up to lvl 12,at that lvl it learns Double Kick.I easily beat brock's Onix with it.

PokeLawry August 10th, 2010 1:42 PM

Nidoking's THRASH is amazing. :)

TheFuturePokemon August 10th, 2010 1:55 PM

With my Pokemon Yellow game I evolved Caterpie into metapod and than Butterfree which at level 10 learned confusion. :D

Emlam August 10th, 2010 3:14 PM

That's the one where you go crazy and end up confused, right? :D

.Hoenn August 10th, 2010 3:42 PM

Pikachu still kills Onix easy with the D-T+Quick attack combo

jjnerdful August 10th, 2010 4:18 PM

I used Butterfree and Mankey for Brock.

PokeLawry August 10th, 2010 4:30 PM

yes, but it works like a CHAMP!

Emlam August 10th, 2010 4:44 PM

I honestly don't think I've ever tried Thrash with a Nido - too many fun TM's to use, so pretty and shiny. I'm easily distracted. :P

PokeLawry August 10th, 2010 5:16 PM

it's great. he uses it like, 4/5-ish times before he becomes confused. and by then, all the foes have fainted, because it's a BEAST MOVE! :D

thatsfetchxo August 10th, 2010 5:34 PM

My bro used mankey for Brock

Emlam August 10th, 2010 6:27 PM

What if the foe has 5-6 Pokemon or a Rock type? D:

Charizard★ August 10th, 2010 7:14 PM

I used my Nidoqueen more than Pikachu XD

I use Nidoking more, but aesthetically I much prefer Nidoqueen. She's so pretty. XD

Electirizer August 11th, 2010 9:32 PM

I mainly used my Butterfree to beatBrock.
That's when I used him more than silly little Pikachu.
Then when Pikachu really pissed me off i released it.

PokeLawry August 11th, 2010 9:33 PM

AWEE . Why'd you release it? What'd Pikado? [ahhaa!! See what i did there? :D]

Itstoppedatumbreon August 12th, 2010 7:30 AM

i never knew u could get mankeys and nidorans!
i had to train a caterpie up and put em to sleep

PokeLawry August 12th, 2010 11:21 AM

mankeys, and nidorans are in the patch of grass off of viridian city, on the way to the elite four. :)

Emlam August 12th, 2010 11:36 AM

Good place to get Spearow too if you want a cheap Flying attack to take down Viridian forest.

Mankey did take me by surprise the first time I found one there, I guess they gave him to you earlier in Yellow to make up for Pikachu.

PokeLawry August 12th, 2010 12:40 PM

i've caught mankeys, never really used one though.

Emlam August 12th, 2010 1:22 PM

Aw, no love for Mankey. :P

Mayfan24 August 12th, 2010 1:41 PM

i think the farthest a mankey has made it with me is the 3rd gym, not much farther

Kanto_Johto August 13th, 2010 2:15 PM

Nidoking was one of my favourite Pokemon back in the day. Used him all the time. What irritated me was that on Stadium he didn't look nearly as badass. I expcted him to be as big as Rhydon was.

Joenub707 August 13th, 2010 9:23 PM

I believe a Pokemon like Mankey would be a good Pokemon to use.

But since I couldn't catch one.(CRAP)

I faced Brock with Pikachu and won....barely! LOL

triggerhappymonk August 13th, 2010 10:52 PM

Pokémon Yellow... sure brings back memories... Memories of training my Pikachu 'till it learned quick attack then beating brock the beating the game with a really strong Pikachu.

dion22997 August 14th, 2010 2:43 PM

Easiest way to beat Brock in Yellow without grinding is;

1. Get a Pidgey, getting it to level 15-ish is no task.
2. Get a Rattata, doesn't matter which level. (Should have Tail Whip)

Spam Sand Attack on Brock's pokemon with your Pidgey. All of his attacks will eventually miss. Switch out to Rattata and spam Tail Whip. A few tackles from Pidgey will finish off the boss in no time.

DanTheBib August 15th, 2010 12:03 PM

Old team at the beginning was Mankey, Pikachu, Rattata, Pidgey and that was about it. I tended to get them all the level 10 and just blast through.

Nowadays, I catch do the following:

* Catch Pidgey
* Level Pikachu to lv.20
* Fight Brock, and win.
* ???
* Profit :)

GrifSpark August 15th, 2010 12:30 PM

Ah, Nidoking. I shall miss you, and it seems I wasn't the only one to catch a Nidoran and "Uber" it up.

It took me months to beat Brock (I was a kid), and a friend told me that Nidoran learnt DoubleKick, which was great. Soon I caught a Nidoran (M), and it became the only Pokemon I used (Unless I felt like training Charmander, which was rare).

BabyBookie August 15th, 2010 12:30 PM

I smashed my way through brock by brutel force I only wanted To keep one pokemon and that was with my pika I raised him to level 20 and easily went past brock I stayed with my pika untill the end of the game my pika(riatue)was at a level 95 no one could beat my pokemon then

Darkfire_Danny August 18th, 2010 4:40 AM

As a child I would spam Thunder Wave for some reason, expecting it to do something eventually. Then I discovered the Nidoran male, and have used one in every regular runthrough of Yellow since :D . Thrash dominates.

manomow August 18th, 2010 9:08 AM

I TOO used a Nidoran for Brock. His name is Nidon and is now a Nidoking. Pika, is REALLY under leveled with Rowan the Spearow. But my Saur, Char, and Aquablaster are now in their 20's.

littlekid137 August 18th, 2010 9:14 AM

I always went butterfree with his confusion attack right when he evolved. Man I loved how good those pokemon were

Superjub August 19th, 2010 1:40 PM

Funny thing is that when I first got Pokemon Yellow, I grinded and grinded and grinded, and finally, after lots of grinding, I beat Brock using tackle. :P

Recently, I just used a Nidoran♂ with its Double Kick. :)

seal August 25th, 2010 12:36 AM

For Brock on Yellow I always use Mankey. Mankey's Low Kick destroys Brock.

Sewzie August 25th, 2010 6:46 AM

Used Mankey as well. It was quite hard to scout for him though, but it was worth it. =D

Kininja August 25th, 2010 1:27 PM

Well, I hate to brag -Pulls brag face-
I use Pikachu ;)
I trained it hard so it learned quick attack :)
ANd he can slightly harm Brock's pokemon
Eventually done the job :P

ThatKidMike August 25th, 2010 1:32 PM

Is it weird that I've been playing this game again?

I've got Pikachu, Mankey and the 3 starters. Plus I traded for Mr. Mime.

Psychic pokemon are stupid overpowered in these first gen games.

Morgnarok August 25th, 2010 2:14 PM

I caught,Leveled and evolved Nidoking and Nidoqueen.

xPsychosocial August 26th, 2010 3:19 PM

The first time around I levelled up a Mankey. The other times I either used a Nidoran male or I got my cousin to trade me over a water Pokémon from his game.

Thatch Bayne August 27th, 2010 6:24 AM

Butterfree. He killed with Confusion and such.

SocialD September 3rd, 2010 8:23 AM

I always went with the standard Butterfree strategy :P
I like butterfree anyways :]
Even in r/b I catch a caterpie and evolve before I fight brock

mondays suck September 4th, 2010 8:56 AM

I used to go with Butterfrees and Nidorans (both) back in the day, I never really liked Mankey. Actually I often boxed Pikachu right at the point where I caught a Nidoran.

Steve Moore September 4th, 2010 9:50 AM

I used Mankey or Butterfree.

eevee91 September 4th, 2010 11:18 AM

To fight Brock I always leveled up Pikachu, caught a caterpie and pidgey, and went from there. After some effort, I beat him.

Clefairies September 8th, 2010 12:46 PM

I remember just training my Pidgey and evolving into a Pidgeotto.
It seemed to do the trick without to much of a problem, from what I rememebr.

Perriechu September 9th, 2010 12:36 AM

I caught a Nidoran and taught it D-Kick, then went on to use Nidoking and the Elemental starters more that Pikachu.

Lati-Fan95 September 9th, 2010 9:00 AM

The first time I played Yellow (which was a year ago), I caught a Caterpie, evolved it into Butterfree, taught it Confusion and destroyed Brock with it!^^

sab September 9th, 2010 1:49 PM

I played yellow right when it came out, and I beat Brock with nidorina. In red I beat Brock by accident, all but one of his onix's twelve attacks missed.

Limey-chan September 9th, 2010 2:00 PM

I usually used a Butterfree with Confusion, or caught and trained up a Mankey.

Roxasabridged September 16th, 2010 2:50 AM

Quote:

... You can beat Brock with Pikachu. Quite easily at level 14.

Musica September 16th, 2010 4:55 AM

All I could remember when I was still a kid that I beat Brock (and almost all gym leaders) with the Pikachu. I disliked catching other pokemon for battling purposes and just used Pikachu all the way.

Now, I played Yellow again and caught a Mankey and a Caterpie. Trained Mankey to level 15 and Caterpie (Butterfree) to level 15 also. Pikachu was like 12 this time.

Gonzo September 16th, 2010 6:07 AM

yes, you CAN do this!
Maxed Evasiveness (double team) and Slam! (requires 20lvl)

dragons September 17th, 2010 2:37 AM

yeah i was suprised as well brock was pretty good!

Hiyappu_Storm September 19th, 2010 4:16 AM

I had Yellow at a very young age, and didn't know how to catch pokemon at that time, and ended up with a level 28 Pikachu and was taking out half of his Geodudes health in one Quick Attack, so that was my way, but now I would grab a Mankey and take them out easy.

rstevenson1976 September 23rd, 2010 8:47 PM

I bought yellow when it came out, I used mankey for brock. Sooner or later I may get nostalgic and check ebay for a gameboy color and the origonal pokemon games again.

donavannj September 24th, 2010 6:21 AM

I think I usually used a Butterfree, but I'm not 100% sure. Confusion bypassed Brock's high Defense stats. (b'-')b

Blew September 24th, 2010 6:46 AM

I started various new games on Pokémon Yellow, so what I used against Brock varied between Butterfree, Mankey and Nidoran♂. I think I even attempted to beat him with Pikachu, though whether I actually beat him with it I don't remember (I doubt I did).

yoyoma724 October 10th, 2010 1:37 AM

Yeah, I trained Caterpie to a Butterfree and it learned confusion.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ October 10th, 2010 2:57 PM

I believe I raised a Nidoran to learn Double Kick and mop the floor with Brock. But that's going way back in time; I just know that I don't believe I would have used Butterfree or Mankey in any capacity in the game.

the :D October 15th, 2010 5:12 AM

I raised a butterfree under the impression that confusion was super effective against rock.

and it worked :D

but pikachu's still my highest level. I still play yellow :D

Garouga! Bare Your Fangs! October 15th, 2010 5:26 AM

I almost always went Nidoran in Yellow 'cause I love Nidorino. The few times I went Mankey were regretted in the late game because it seemed like it took forever to level up.

Sydian October 15th, 2010 7:58 PM

Let's see...I didn't read and kept losing and then lost my first copy of Yellow. :D I was dumb, lol. Nowadays, I raise a Butterfree or a Nido to learn Double Kick.

Balalaika October 22nd, 2010 6:31 PM

Pikachu, tail whip and quick attack, it actually worked pretty quickly too.

tolanator October 29th, 2010 5:12 PM

I leveled up my pikachu till it was like lv 40....lol

Rucario October 30th, 2010 5:32 AM

I caught a Caterpie and raised it to level 10 where it became a Butterfree and it learned Confusion. Then I used Confusion on Brock's Pokemon and knocked them all out. It was actually pretty easy once you get Butterfree.

jujuju October 31st, 2010 8:05 PM

I always liked using Nidoran as it was a better pokemon later on in the game than Butterfree. Nidoking was one of the best pokemon in rby and usually had a place on my team.

I used the same solution as you did. Level up Pikachu and teach it Slam. Just keep fighting and stay as long as you can to win the match.

Gundisalvus Kuno November 13th, 2010 12:24 PM

Nidoking all the way. I just could never get past Mankey's unbelievably weak defense. Also, Nidoking complimented the rest of my future team nicely, which usually included the three starters and something like an Alakazam

Yuoaman November 13th, 2010 10:36 PM

When I was young I would just catch a Pidgey and grind it to level 20 or so, evolving it on the way, then wipe out Brock. I then kept using that Pidgey exclusively for the entire game. By the time I beat the Champion I would have a level 90+ Pidgeot, haha.

Shadow Ball November 15th, 2010 7:54 AM

I used a Nidorina against Brock. Her attack was a bit lower than the males, but I think her defense was higher, so I decided on her. Worked pretty well, I don't think she lost a single hit point. XD I kept her all the way through the game, too. I think I ended up teaching her some beast moves... earthquake, bubblebeam, icebeam and toxic or something like that. She was awesome, lol.

Ace Trainer Jessie November 16th, 2010 8:58 AM

I usually caught a Mankey, but I remember once or twice using Butterfree.

jmacz008 December 12th, 2010 4:20 PM

I wanted to be just like Ash, so I went in with a Butterfree and a Pidgeotto. My Pikachu was like level 24 lol. The other two were around level 18.

BLK December 12th, 2010 5:55 PM

I caught a nidoran to use against Brock, my strongest pokemon in yellow now is my nidoqueen, beating my pikachu by 30lvls

Professor Cactus January 9th, 2011 11:26 AM

I did what I do in the versions after Crystal, catch something better and ditch the starter. OR I would sometimes trade it asap, evolve it and use a TM on it, then trade it back.

vaporeon7 January 16th, 2011 12:28 AM

I only used a Pikachu. I just had to train it to like Lv22 to beat him.

DNZGames January 16th, 2011 7:59 AM

I took out Brock with my Metapod and Kakuna (believe or not), as I only had 3 Pokemon. Although, whatever happens, I always get a Jigglypuff in ANY Gen-I (and Gen-III Kanto) games because when it is a Wigglytuff, and you find the TM Mega Punch, it can take out an entire party of 6 Pokémon that are all 10 levels higher than it by itself. If only both Jigglypuff and Moon Stones where found before Pewter :/

Annuhh5 January 18th, 2011 3:50 AM

for some reason, i'd never catch a pidgey, but look around for ages in viridian forest looking for a pidgeotto.

Cascade. January 18th, 2011 10:46 AM

I caught like, three Nidoran's to try and beat him, but it was actually my Pikachu that did it when it learned quick attack!

Lord Varion January 18th, 2011 11:20 AM

Mankey.
But with all due respect
you can beat brock with pikachu
i've you train really hard >,< it learns quick attack ;D

Sesen January 18th, 2011 11:59 AM

I was new to the world of Pokemon when I got Yellow...and I do believe I trained up my Pikachu to learn quick attack in order to beat Brock. xD But I also recall having a Butterfree to help battle the rocky terror that's Geodude!

Ghostie January 18th, 2011 2:50 PM

I used various different Pokemon. When I was little, I'd grind Pokemon like Rattata and Pidgey up to level 14 or so, then I'd abuse Tail Whip and Sand Attack, and then I'd use Tackle and Gust to win.
When I figured out that Fighting type is super effective against Rock, I went and caught Mankey. It took FOREVER to level though, and back then Karate Chop was a Normal type attack. :/
You know what I read in a gaming mag once? There was a guide for Pokemon Yellow in it, and it said not to go toward the Pokemon League until you had all your badges because there was nothing worth catching there! (You know, that patch of grass where Nidoran male, female, and Mankey all are)

KitKat13 January 24th, 2011 2:20 AM

Same goes for me, I trained a Nidoran and evolved it and defeated brock. XD;
