Pokemon Yellow "Starters"

okay, so we all know that you can't beat Brock with Pikachu, you have to catch others and raise them up to beat him. I'm just curious as to which one(s) you guys used to beat brock. I caught a Nidoran, raised him up, evolved him, and now i use my Nidoking more than Pikachu. anybody do anything similar to that? 8)

yeah, actually i caught both Nidoran but i ended up going with Nidoking because he seemed stronger.

He really suprised me. He's super good, i honestly don't think i've used one before this. haha.

i don't think i have either, and i honestly don't think i've trained an eevee as high as the one i did on yellow. lv54

A lot of Yellow 'mons learn Fighting attacks early, once I used Mankey and once Nidorino (his Attack is higher than the female's, all the better to cut through a Rock type's Defense). The first time I'm pretty sure I just went with Butterfree, since Special attacks don't need to be as strong with Brock.
Nidoking's one of my faves for his crazy cool movepool (I just give him the TM's I have left over :P ), and Butterfree can't do much so Nido's usually my choice.

7 year old me's solution:
  • Grind Pikachu to level 20
  • Teach it Slam
  • Continue grinding until it can take out Brock
  • ???
  • Profit!

Modern day me would probably catch a Mankey, Maybe a Nidoran or two for backup.

Emlam August 9th, 2010 1:52 PM

Heh, I really didn't like Pikachu or I might've tried that too. I know I preferred using Charmeleon on Brock instead of just raising something more effective.

Mankey's the better choice since it gets STAB for fighting attacks, but for some reason I just never liked Mankey so I went for other Pokemon. -_-'
To this day I've only bothered raising a Primeape once.

Pokemon Yellow was the first pokemon game i ever got. and I couldnt get past Brock, FOREVER, so 9-year-old Me's solution to THAT was to trade my lapras over from Blue. and kick some ass. :)

Emlam August 9th, 2010 2:07 PM

I could never trade 'cuz I only had one GB. D:

Planetes. August 9th, 2010 3:55 PM

not if he learns iron tail! lol jk that's a gen 3 move, but I used Mankey to defeat Brock.

I only had (Still have) one. But thank god i had friends with one. :)

Skaterzpenguin August 9th, 2010 5:43 PM

Yes, I use to catch a Mankey since its a fighting type which has more of an advantage over rock types. Male nidoran from yellow can learn double kick too! He's always a good choice as well.. .

I didn't know a single person who had one, except for my cousins half the country away. >.<

Red1530 August 9th, 2010 7:18 PM

I went the Butterfree rout to defeat Brock on all my play thorough.

.Hoenn August 9th, 2010 7:26 PM

Im doing a pikachu monotype, and i just used double-team+Quick Attack

it was easy as hell

Emlam August 9th, 2010 7:37 PM

Yeah, to be fair Brock *is* the easiest gym after Surge just because his Pokemon have terrible attacks. :P

Weavile05 August 9th, 2010 7:53 PM

I remember when i used a mankey, then I stupidly taught KarateChop over Low Kick cuz I thought it was fighting type move (I actually played Gen IV first) then I used it against a Geodude and i was like "wait a minute... ah crap!"

Emlam August 9th, 2010 7:57 PM

Ohhh, Normal Karate Chop was such a terrible typing decision. XD

ORegan August 9th, 2010 9:26 PM

trade mewtwo over from red version. :X I had red on my birthday, my little brother got blue on his, and me and both my brothers got Yellow for christmas, and we all had gameboys and one linkcable to trade with. Nothing says screw the game mechanics, I have a disobiediant level 100 legendary better than using it against a level 15 onix. The only bad thing is that mewtwo barely listened to me. >:[

RubyHacker August 10th, 2010 4:24 AM

I used a Nidoran,I grew him up to lvl 12,at that lvl it learns Double Kick.I easily beat brock's Onix with it.

PokeLawry August 10th, 2010 1:42 PM

Nidoking's THRASH is amazing. :)

TheFuturePokemon August 10th, 2010 1:55 PM

With my Pokemon Yellow game I evolved Caterpie into metapod and than Butterfree which at level 10 learned confusion. :D

That's the one where you go crazy and end up confused, right? :D

.Hoenn August 10th, 2010 3:42 PM

Pikachu still kills Onix easy with the D-T+Quick attack combo

jjnerdful August 10th, 2010 4:18 PM

I used Butterfree and Mankey for Brock.
