Poem of the Week 5
Poem Of The Week 5 Competition ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Welcome to the Poem Of The Week 5 competition, hosted by yours truly. The original contest was hosted by Abnegation, the second by Sweet Jasmine, the third by Ayselipera, and the fourth by IceKnight212. Now this competition is for those who wish to enter their poems which comply with the corresponding theme, so that they can have some recognition for their amazing talent! Remember that the Moderator of this section will be supervising. If you win Poem Of The Week, you will win an emblem along with the choice of the next week's theme and the option to be a judge. Poem of the Week is a great way to put your writing skills to the test. You'll also get to see what other people think of how you express your emotions using words. Please make sure to read and follow all Other Writing and PokeCommunity rules as posted below before participating. Rules and Guidelines Remember to keep within the Writing rules, the Poem of the Week rules and of course the PC forum wide rules. Also make sure that you post your poem within the timeline which is posted within "The Theme of the Week" section below. - The first, and most important rule, is to NEVER plagiarize work. It's very wrong, and the consequences can be severe. So please, do not steal! - You may only post 1 poem relevant to the given theme of the week. - Please only post good feedback on other entries within this thread. By feedback I mean good comments on why you like them rather than full criticism. Encourage others, and help them feel good about their writings. - When submitting a poem either post a link to the thread that hosts the poem (must be on PC) or post the poem within the thread, and I will put it up on the first post with the others. - This is a judging contest, there will be no votes. However, you may send me a private message if you would like to express your love for a particular poem and I will take it into consideration. - You may post to state that you will be posting a poem and entering. Asking questions and the likes is also fine. All discussion may go within the thread. - If you are posting a poem please keep it nicely laid out with as little formatting as possible. It's better we don't have big bright text and numerous BB codes. It just makes it a little easier on the eyes. Thank you. So please participate, have fun, don't be shy, and always remember your poetry is a expression of emotions and experiences, and of course a good effort as well as talent, so no matter what you write, it will have a chance! Please don't feel intimidated, even if this is your first poem it still stands a fighting chance! Remember that if you want to participate, but you're not sure how to write a good poem there are stickied threads right in the poetry section for you to review. Credits to Abnegation, Sweet Jasmine, Ayselipera, and IceKnight212 for writing and editing the rules and guidelines. -Hall Of Poetry Winners- List of the winners and their winning entry. 1. Your entry is in.
And don't worry, Gardenia. Everyone has a chance. |
Heres my entry:
Spoiler:
|
Your poem most certainly qualifies.
Did you intentionally give it no title? ...I'm just curious. |
Okay, I'm entering ~
While in Limbo A tiny speck of light is seen Twinkling in the great expanse of black. A tiny haven can be seen In the chaos that ensues. A heart is torn on what to think, Whether to head forward or back Is the hardest decision that one could make While in the limbo of darkness. Here is nothing, even darkness hides, There is light, but is it a trick? Here is peace, there is peace, It's what one chooses for themselves. Peace of nothing, or peace of light, Such a decision seems simple, But it is hard to choose between What one knows is right, or what is known. |
Your poem is added.
Whenever I hear the word 'limbo', I think of it as that party game where you go under a rope or bar. But that's just my ignorant thinking. |
Quote:
And thank you for accepting. |
This is absolutely beautiful. Thumbs up.
|
when do we get the results
|
I presume we get them soon after the competition ends. So probably from friday the 20th to sunday the 22nd. Though I don't see why we couldn't end it earlier as I cannot see anyone else entering.
|
Once the entry period is over, I'll try to pick a winner. Of course, with help from the other judges.
|
I suggest Gardenia101's poem!
(Okay, I'm her alt, so not really, lol) Thanks for answering |
Hmm, I don't really know what this is, but, it's my entry.
My Peace, Spoiler:
|
Wow, Zirkle, that is simply beautiful. Nice job on it, really!
|
Your entry has been added.
I'd love to give my opinion on it and the other entries, but I'd rather wait until after the contest. I want to be as fair as possible. |
This is my first try here at PC. I'm really nervous :X I couldnt think of a good title though.. xD
Spoiler:
|
Alright TJgamer, I'm here. So far I really like all the poems (keeping further opinions to self). I can't wait to help out more!
With all regards, -ChrisTom |
Your "Dreams of Peace" is in.
And I feel the same way, ChrisTom. I like the poems, but I don't want to tell what I think of them until the contest is done. |
The entries are now officially closed!
The judges and I will be trying to pick a winner as quickly and fairly possible. |
Yayyy!!!!
I can't wait to see the results |
The winner has now been chosen
This week's winner is mervyn797's "Dreams of Peace". Spoiler:
Congratulations to you! Your emblem should arrive soon. And good job to all of you for showing us your works. The next theme will be decided soon. Be on the lookout for it. |
Quote:
And thank you to everyone who wrote an entry. Looking forward to seeing more of everyone's great talent. |
wow!! i won!!!! thank you Astinus and TJgamer. i sure appreciate it.
|
The next contest's theme has been chosen. Look at the first post for details.
Also our winner, mervyn797, has decided to be a judge for this week. |
My entry:
Spoiler:
A change for me- it ryhmes! Of course, it's not very long, but... oh well. |
Your entry is in.
I can't wait to see the the other entries. |
Cool!! I'm going to try for next week's theme!!
Great Job to all contestants!! My Entry: What Is Feared? What people fear the most Is saddness, I must say It brakes the heart Causes pain And tears flow down like rain The only thing that can cheer you up, Is happiness As someone wise told me That it may be stormy now but it cannot rain forever I saw this saying on a wallpaper, and now I thought it kinda sounded like the theme |

Sorry but, I'm not sure of the author to give the quote credit to, if I do find it, I'll include it. :)
I just featured the quote. I'm not taking credits for someone else, it wouldn't be fair. the rest is my creation, that's fine if you don't want to include it, I just featured the quote. Again, I'm sorry about that. Sorry if I'm coming off mean or anything |
An entry for the contest must be the work of the contestant.
You don't have to feel hard or anything, Dahlia. I understand. |
Thanks I'll try again next time. Sorry for wasting your time
|
I think I'll have a go at entering. Here's my poem;
Spoiler:
It's probably obvious, but you have to stress the "lee" sound at the end of "Melancholy" for the last rhyme to work. |
Your poem is in.
And I can accept on how the last rhyme works. |
-Announcement-
The entry time has been postponed until next week (September 7, 2010). We need more entries than just two. |
Welp, hurrs mine. Not the best, but I'm not great at sad poems. Can't really think of a witty title, so call it... Not Again.
I lay on my bed, Thoughts of you running through my head You gave us a chance, Our love was such a boring dance. You were there for me And the same I could not be. I ended it on such a sad note And that was all she wrote. Until that day where I let my jealousy Get the best of me I called you up on my own time And you gave me a happy reply The second time through Was even more cause for gloom I broke your heart twice, You were my own little vice Now I can see the irony, I want you, you can't stand me. |
Your poem is in.
I hope there's more entries coming. |
Man, not much entries lately, huh?
|
Unfortunately, no.
But there'll be more. I can tell. |
I love merv's and Shin. Meganium's poems on peace. Merv used better poetic devices but Meganium's poem was the one i liked better. Probably because peace is misinterpreted these days and i agree with how ppl think they can buy peace.
|
Thanks for the comment.
You could try entering the contest too if you want to. I'm eager for another contestant. |
Man, this must be, like, the least popular sub-forum ever :(
It's too bad, this is a really good section. |
A lot of members are busy returning to school, so they're probably don't have the time right now to participate in a forum contest.
Or maybe this prompt just isn't striking a lot of people with inspiration. Just relax and don't panic that the Poetry section is going to die. You're still getting posts here, so there is some interest in poetry as a whole. |
I forgot about the school thing.
And I'm not a bit worried about this section.....yet. |
Quote:
|
Well, I sure hope it never dies :(
I love the Poetry section! |
I'm sure it won't die.
I'd say it's more like on hiatus, due to the school year starting. |
Hope so, although it wasn't really popular through July either.
People just don't seem to appreciate Poetry anymore. |
Quote:
But yeah, I'm surely gonna enter this contest. If not this week, then another time. Won't be leaving it, though. Might as well try even though I know I suck. XD; |
Quote:
For most, poetry is also very time consuming, so at times people are not jumping at making an entry when they might have a lot else to do. Especially with school going on now. My advice is just to be lax about it and let people get entries in at their own time, even if it means passing the deadline but be sure to keep people informed. But like any art form, you need to be patient. |
Quote:
Besides, Poem of the Week has been going on for over a year. That's pretty darn good for a subforum that no one "appreciates" anymore. There will be some weeks where you do only get two or three entries, and there will be weeks where you'll have so many entries you trip over them. Like Gav said, just relax and let POTW run its course. Right now, things are slow. But I'm sure that they'll pick up to normal once school/work/real life calms down for everyone. |

Activity in things sometimes runs in cycles, in a way. |
Hmmm...
Time for some advertising! ;D Expect a few more people to sign up, ok? |
Umm...okay.
...Advertise? ...How? |
Quote:
It can actually be a bit shocking how in one week you may only get two entires and in the next seven people end up participating. |
Well, I FINALLY made something. Just a freehand, but I still like it.
Kaos Spoiler:
And yes, the title is spelled like that on purpose. To emphasize that it is the original Greek meaning of the word "Chaos." (Which was essentially nothingness) |
Quote:
Quote:
I've done it before. It actually does work ^^ Quote:
Freehands can be extrordinary, and yours is proof! |

That's okay. It will pass by.
And thanks for your entry, Missingno.7-4468. |

The entries are now officially closed!
This week's theme may have been a little slow this time. But like I said, it'll pass by. |
There may not have been a lot of entries, but what we do have entered is of a very high quality (I actually pity the judges). Plus, I actually don't think that it's because the prompt is too plain, but because it's rather complex. I think it's hard to truly capture what an emotion feels like to you and then to express it in poetry-form. Everyone will see it just that touch differently.
On a second note, I can't wait to see who wins because I, for one, thought it was a great prompt. And the challenge allows you to become better, no? |
The winner has finally been decided.
Daydream's Too Much is our winner! Spoiler:
Congratulations to you! You should receive your emblem soon. Sorry for the delay. We had a bit of difficulty deciding. No hard feelings? |
Oh wow. ;o__o I didn't think I'd win, I really liked Zirkle's myself. Thanks a lot, (I actually, out loud, in a very high-pitched voice, screamed OHYAY I'VE WON!) I'm really glad my poetry is liked. :3
|
Congratulations Daydream! Your's was a truly great poem, and all the rest were beautiful entries as well.
By the way, you used my favourite abab rhyming scheme. xD The judging did take quite a lot of time, because of all the different opinions among the various judges. We managed to reach to a consensus though. :P |
I agree. You all did quite well, which explains the difficulty in deciding a winner.
I'll announce the next week's theme soon. |
Ohp. Thanks Daydream :D I didn't see that little comment, haha. But yours was terrific! They were all very good. Can't wait fer the next prompt,
|
The theme for this week's contest has been chosen.
It is Romance. The beauty and power of love. Entry period: September 16, 2010 (Thursday) - September 23, 2010 (Thursday). Good luck to you all. |
I WILL be participating, as I SHOULD be really good at this theme.
But for some reason nothing is coming at the time being =/ |
Take your time to think.
It's wise to think over what you write. |
I coulda sworn I posted this lastnight, even after I accidentally posted with my alt and deleted it >_>
A letter Spoiler:
|
Your entry qualifies for the theme, indubitably.
I can't wait to see more. |
Announcement
Things have been moving very slowly recently. In response, I am now extending the entry period. In fact, I'm keeping it open until enough entries are made. I understand if many of you are busy, for school has begun. I'll be patient. |
i'm entering.
Summer Love The shine of the sun on your hair, Is truly too much for me to bare. The shine of your eyes in the dying light, Sends my beating heart, into flight. The beads of water, on your skin so fair, Could end the world of dispair. Last, but not least, Your smile, like the beautiful moon of the East. |
Thank you!
Your entry is now in. I hope there's more! |
thanks!
so when does this contest end, so i can tell some friends? |

So could I still enter today...?
If so, I would like to present my entry: Spoiler:
|
Your entry is now in.
Sorry for any slight delays. |

Poem?
Hello. I'm a little mixed up on if I can still summit a poem or not.
I apologize if it's too late, and if it is, please let me know. Here's my Poem: Terror or Bliss Caught between a moment of terror and bliss, Should she hide her face from what lies within, Or settle into the gently kiss? What known not to her moments ago The trueness of her heart sprouting about, Her feelings hidden began to shout. What could not be released, but no longer hidden Poured out of her soul and she was smitten! A smile graced her tearstained face His retreating form now feet away. She could not breath and could not speak. With a look of bliss and resentment, she fell into a wondered sleep. |
Very nice poems. I want to enter this. How do I figure out the due date, current theme, the first post was a bit confusing :S all that mumbo jumbo etc.
|
The current theme is Romance.
The due date isn't really set right now since this theme has gone on for like...3 weeks, I think. =/ So yeah...Go ahead and make something if you'd like. |
I announced in the main post that I well let the contest entry period gone on forever until I think there are enough entries.
And apparently there a quite a bunch now. I may close it soon. But don't worry, Project. You can enter. Oh yeah, your entry is in, Fearless Love. |
I can still enter right? If not, then disregard this post.
Spoiler:
|
Quote:
Also, I'm a bt confused regarding the last line. Is it a part of your poem? :P No wait, it isn't. ^^; |
Of course there's still time to enter. Don't worry.
Your entry is in now. |
If you don't mind me saying, this seems a bit disorganized. I think you should have extended the entry period by a set amount of days/weeks and stated as such in the OP. It would be nice to lose the vagueness, which I personally find a bit off-putting.
/rude post is rather rude. Sorry. |
It's okay. No hard feelings.
And it's true, I will soon come up with a date for the end of the contest entry period. |
I'd like to enter with this poem, it doesn't have a name but yea.
Spoiler:
If you want help organising this i'm here, being the creator of the SOTW (On another account due to the new naming system) and helping it run for quite a while I could help with the due date system and so on. |
Your entry is now in.
Thanks for the offer, but I think I can manage. I'll drop word to you if I may need assistance. -Announcement- I am finally making a closing date for the contest. Sorry for the delays, but this weekend is very busy for me. The contest will be closed on October 14, 2010 (Thursday). I'll admit it. I have been a little bit lazy too. .......Sorry. :cer_blush: |
Quote:
SOTW is a different issue all together. The Graphics sub-forum is quite popular and active. It isn't the same with the Poetry section. Lately, it has been quite inactive, though I can see some news poems coming in. |
Quote:
There is a positive if you have it week by week though, my second rate peoms chances instantly go up! Haha! ;) |
Monkeyandhead, the judges and I have briefly discussed about your entry.
It does not exactly fit with the theme. The theme is Romance. Yours, however, seems to be Beauty or Joy. Don't get the wrong idea; I really like your poem. But, if you want to be in the contest, you'll have to start over. ....Don't worry. There's still time. |
Still time? How many poems do you guys need?
|
Enough that there's some sort of competition between entries. Otherwise, it's just really pointless to even have a competition because the same person will always win.
I mean, it's only a few more days, and you're still going to have to wait because the judges will have to discuss who will be the winner. And the length of time will allow those who haven't entered yet, or have to rewrite their poems, like monkeyandhead, to get their poems in. Otherwise, this would be a boring competition, as I said. Also, one of the judges as a job that won't allow zir to judge until the fourteenth, so this competition ends on a good day for everyone involved. |
Already told you in PM that I understand why my doesn't fit so well with the theme.
I hope this one fits because the theme 'Romance' is just strangling my mind atm. Spoiler:
I think it panned out alright, but just for security I've got another I wrote up below : ). Spoiler:
|
Sorry I came off a bit rude. I should be more patient... I didn't really understand how this whole thing comes together and such. Sorry. ^^;

Haha, don't worry about coming off as rude. I can understand the meaning behind your post. And really, while the wait is a long one for those who entered, the way that we have it set up now works for both the entrants and the judges, so there's no problems there.
Except for the waiting. And yes, monkeyandhead, your poem fits this theme. I would have posted before TJgamer, but...forgot. |
