is anybody here NOT afraid of Bees?

like, at school (I Don't go anymore, but when I did), when a bee gets into the classroom, and flies by a kid, they all run, and scream "BEE". and i'm not talking about KIDS, i'm talking about middle school/high school kids. Am I the only one who just sat there, repeating over and over like a father to a CHILD, that "If you just leave it alone, don't freak out, it won't bother you. It's more scared of you, than you are it"? and i understand that some people are alergic, they are the only exceptions. ....just curious. :)

The Last One August 11th, 2010 10:06 PM

i am the same.. exept.. i have even more stories of high school/middle school freak outs

1. BEES
every **** week there is oh (shriek) blah blah blah... it anoys me

2. LIZARDS
I wasn't even in their class that period!!!!! and they were running around the room (this is middle school now) and i had to step in and had it in my hands and out the door in 30 seconds

3. SPIDERS
i mean small spiders and they would just kill them.. no reason... now i had fun one day at school and brought in a female Black Widow.. (female they are the poisonous biting ones with the red hourglass - Males are nice and aren't poisonous) and had it crawl on my arms and stuff.. lol.. had the whole cafetiria shrieking.. didn't even get in trouble.. and it didn't get killed xD

4. SNAKES
I got expelled for saving a pygmy rattlesnake's life! I mean really! i get expelled! and other kids are putting their faces in striking distance while it is backing up ready to bite!

Bees are not funny

There is not many people in this world that feel the same as you about not being afraid of bees. Have you ever been attack by bees before..? I was attack by many bees when i was a little girl, it really hurt. So the next time you think that it is funny that a bee flying around in the room..you better hope it will not land on you.

Eon-Rider August 12th, 2010 5:38 AM

Though not entirely the same, a wasp was flying around my sister's room. Let's just say I caught it in one of those old small film containers.

Yeah, I'm not scared.

Charizard★ August 12th, 2010 5:41 AM

I'm not afraid of bees. If you leave them alone and give them space without provoking them your fine.

Chad - August 12th, 2010 5:58 AM

If I see one, I won't be scared. BUT the minute it gets near me, I run xP I hate insects, overall.

donavannj August 12th, 2010 6:03 AM

If you don't provoke or frighten the bees, they won't sting you. That's what I did wrong all but the last time I was stung by one... and that last time, I got stung because I wasn't aware it was on the back of my neck and I tilted my head back because I thought it was an itch (I was being resourceful on how to scratch it!), which startled the bee, so it stung me as I was unknowingly crushing it. XD; I've been stung five times, most of them in the vicinity of my face. XD;

I'm not afraid of them unless they're acting malicious, so I usually just ignore them if it's not malicious, but keep a wary eye when there's food around.

Percy Thrillington August 12th, 2010 6:04 AM

Not so much scared as weary. If a bee flies into my room, I'll just walk out and wait for it to leave via the window. If only that could be said for the rest of my family. Whenever any flying insect comes near her, she'll emit an almighty shriek and start screaming 'wasp! Wasp!' even when it's just a fly. If it wasn't so mind numbing, I'd probably find it funny.

This thread reminds me of a massive freakout my entire class had when we were eight years old. My friend Fionn brought into two earworms for show and tell and they escaped from their box. It took a game of Chinese whispers for everyone to realise that if an earworm gets inside your ear, you're deaf for life, so people were screeching their heads off and standing on tables or chairs. Can't stop laughing whenever I reminisce about it.

Queen bee

I never been that lucky before, for some reason i cause a big problem with the queen bee and all them bees come flying after me. I do my best to stay away from them as much as i can.

How would you cause a problem with a Queen Bee? She doesn't even do anything, let alone give orders to the others.

Eucliffe August 12th, 2010 6:08 AM

I used to be afraid ever since a yellowjacket got me in the most uncomfortable place four times as a child (my dad should've noticed it when he placed me in my carseat >.>), but now I'm not too afraid of them, the exception being wasps of any sort ('cause actually, the only time I ever got stung/bitten by them, it was done by wasps).

It's sad how people consider these bees pests like mosquitos. They're the ones giving us the honey we use in our tea or with our biscuits and crackers, and yet people want to kill them. I'm honestly glad whenever I see a honey bee or two now.

As long as one doesn't bother it, it won't bother you.

OK, true story time. You may call me crazy, but both my mom and I witnessed this: At a message therapist's office, there was a HUGE bee in the bathroom. So what my therapist did was TALK to the bee while getting it to go outside. She was talking to it nicely, as if it were a person, and it actually did go outside without causing any trouble.

So I guess treat bees as if they were human and you won't have any problems?

I doubt your actually causing an issue with the queen of the hive. It's more likely that you're just getting in too close to the hive and doing something to upset the hive as a whole. All the queen does is lay more eggs inside the hive, and a queen will rarely leave the hive, unless there's already a queen in that hive.

Surmonter August 12th, 2010 6:13 AM

I am.

Especially now since there are a bunch of cicada killers in my area. Huge wasps. O_O

Cicada killers aren't bad at all. They're among some of the nicest bees (in my opinion, the ones that fall in that category other than cicada killers include bumblebees and carpenter bees).

Just don't confuse them for hornets. Hornets are definitely worse.

They're a type of wasp though and they have been known to have a bad temper if you don't treat them with respect.

PokeLawry August 12th, 2010 11:28 AM

i really like bees. i'm very interested in beekeeping, but i don't think i can do it. and i love you ALL for having the same outlook as me, with the whole "If you dont bother it, it wont bother you." I'm CONSTANTLY yelling at kids in my family, for going out of their way, just to kill a bee. a bee that isnt bothering anybody, for instance, a bee sitting on a flower, away from everybody. the kids in my family, my nephew especially, will walk all the way over to it, and step on it. it pisses me off more than anything.

Spiders are a different story, though. if they're in my house, i have to kill them. if they're outside, i don't... ever.

Cicada killers are indeed bad. O_o I don't know what you've heard, but just like with most wasps, they have a bad temper.

I've had one chase me before for no reason! ;_;

They don't chase anyone for no reason, you must have got close to its nest :x

Which are usually hidden in the ground. A popular place for them is sandboxes.

So, if one chased me for being on a sidewalk near its nest, what would one do to a kid playing in a sandbox near one? Or how about kids in a backyard near one?

:/

I would never hurt an animal or insect...but Bees?! Gah....I'm scared if they try to sting me!!!!!!! Not allergic, but still...gah...

Taemin August 12th, 2010 5:11 PM

ewgodgeezusnothankyou. D;

I hate bees, and the only thing I hate more are wasps.

If I see one within five feet of me, I take off in whatever direction it's not going in.

Once, when I was 8 or 9, my mom and I were driving (on the highway) to New York, and a hornet flew into the car. Got into the back of the car where it couldn't get out, and I was back there too. >__> I practically climbed over the seats trying to get away from it, and almost killed us both just because I was afraid of a bee. eff that.

O_O Strange

Wasps and Hornets are more territorial so they are aggressive, but they don't have large numbers in their hive like bees do so they take no chance with a threat. :3

Nooo, I hate hornets, but the only ones I've seen still look like bees.. just bigger. So I group them mostly the same. What was in my car was a Hornet, and I was not happy. >_>

Charizard★ August 12th, 2010 5:16 PM

I mean the only type of bee/wasp I would be scared of is Killer Bees. Even if you get within 100 feet of their hive they will attack. Relentlessly if I must say. They are one of the most territorial insects in the world.

That is false my friend, Wasps and hornets normal sized hives contain 25 individuals or so, while Bees can number in the hundreds.

I do know a lot, I've handled them, I've studied them and I've talked to Entomologists about them.

alisaie August 12th, 2010 5:24 PM

I have never been stung (at least not what I remember), so until the day I do get stung, I don't really care for Bees, or their relatives. :U

Kevin August 12th, 2010 5:24 PM

OMG LOL. Bees... They're so much outside my school. It's not even normal D:< I hate them, but they don't sting me. BUT--You know when they say stay still? That's so they get a bigger chance of stinging you because you won't move so they get ya =P

Not really, when you stay still you become less of a threat, as long as your far enough from the hive and stay still you should be fine, unless you ticked them off in some way.

Kylie-chan August 13th, 2010 4:18 AM

I'm allergic, but I'm not afraid. If you don't run screaming from them and aren't dripping in honey, they usually don't come after you. What you said is what people say about snakes etc. and it's generally true, but people lose their heads and flail and the bees / snakes etc. come for them. I live in rural Australia so I'm fairly used to snakes and spiders etc. I guess if a giant tarantula was coming for me, I'd be nervous, but the majority of spiders that scare people aren't even that harmful, let alone fatal.

EvilTelevision August 13th, 2010 8:12 AM

Getting stung by bee's sucks. it used to happen to me quite often.

PokeLawry August 13th, 2010 10:32 AM

bee sting, put some baking soda (Or Powder? Don't remember) On it, and it won't even hurt, at all. :P But while we're on the topic of creepy ****, in 6th grade,

a snake got loose in the school .. . .

We're on a bee/wasp topic though D:

They aren't bad. I've handled many Pythons and a cobra.

EmeraldSerenade August 13th, 2010 11:18 AM

I'm not afraid of bees, I just try to avoid them in general. I hate being stung -__-

chickenofunity August 13th, 2010 11:34 AM

I hate insects as a general rule, but weirdly enough, I'm okay with Bees, they don't bother me. Unless there's loads of them, I get creeped out then.
Wasps on the other hand... I'm gone like a bullet if one comes close.

Pachireecko August 13th, 2010 12:33 PM

I've got apiphobia, so I'm really afraid of bees. Even the sting-less ones. It's quite sad, actually.

PokeLawry August 13th, 2010 8:58 PM

what about ants? I actually know some people who are scared of ants.

shot571 August 13th, 2010 9:25 PM

Im not scared of ants Or really scared of bees or wasps unless they get close. but I dont like killing them. it really annoys me when my parents kill a fly or a spiders or a wasp cos my sisters are scared . :/

tpmrpg August 16th, 2010 6:07 PM

i'm not scared of bees unless there's 3 or more of them or if it get on me

Flashback time:one day i'm just walking outside then a bee stung me on the temple and man did it hurt

shininglatios217 August 16th, 2010 6:15 PM

I'm only afraid of bees/wasps because I don't know if I'm allergic or not.

Natester August 16th, 2010 6:26 PM

I might have been afraid of bees/wasps when I was a kid but now i'm not afraid of them. However, I don't shoo them off if they're on me or else they'd sting me. XD

Zebeedoo August 16th, 2010 6:31 PM

Well, whenever a bee or a big fly is in the classroom... I have to keep my eye on it flying around, that horrible buzzing noise does my head in... and I lose concentration on my work. If I see one outside, I try my hardest to avoid it because again, that buzzing noise freaks me out. xDD; In the case of wasps, I run because they're more dangerous than bees are. :B

mondays suck August 17th, 2010 8:47 AM

I'm not afraid of bees or wasps (they heavily annoy me though), but I have a phobia of crane flies. Does that count?

my friend I have that same irrational phobia I cannot stay in the same room as a bee and have to leave the area if I see one.I absolutely despise the creatures however its more wasps really Ill run from a wasp Ill slowly walk away from a bee.

Aether★ August 17th, 2010 11:16 AM

I am scared of every single flying, yellow-black colored bug. I ain't afraid of spiders, but of bees, wasps, hornets etc.

Comic Tragedy August 17th, 2010 11:50 AM

I'm not afraid of bee's as much as I am wasps. I've been stung by both. The bee sting was harmless really, but the hornet hurt.

Trainer Rye August 17th, 2010 2:32 PM

nah i aint afraid of bees. as long as it doesn't chase me.... lol

Évan August 17th, 2010 2:40 PM

In my 16 years of life on Earth, I've been stung by almost 20 bees. With that, I stay away from them and do not look at them whatsoever.

Gardenia101 August 17th, 2010 5:59 PM

I'm not afraid of bees at all.
Actually, once there was a bee inside of my classroom and I picked it up and held it outside the window unitl it flew away

Peach Fresca August 20th, 2010 9:22 AM

インフェルノの津波 August 20th, 2010 9:29 AM

Me and animals get along just fine (except crows, they hate me, I swear I see one everywhere I go...)

Bees, nah. They're harmless. Wasps? Now we're on a different page. Wasps are known to be a bit "hostile", but I has no fear of little bugs. If you live in Seattle, you're afraid of RACCOONS!

mervyn797 August 20th, 2010 9:48 AM

The very sight of bees makes me just run. Waaaaaah!! Here's another one!!! xD

Lady Nicole August 20th, 2010 1:47 PM

I love bees. I once saw a wasp eating a bee :( I was shocked.

Zeta Sukuna August 20th, 2010 2:01 PM

I like bees. I walked through two clouds of them without getting stung by them. And one of those times they were pissed off since their hive was crushed. Not my fault, but still.

LadySurreal August 20th, 2010 4:01 PM

I am not afraid of bees, but I try my best to not piss them off, the consequences will never be the same (lol, memes)

SIN1488 August 20th, 2010 6:19 PM

For the most part, as in I'm not afraid of the bees themselves. But if a bee or anything suddenly zooms in front of my face, then I usually jump. That's just a reflex though....

Edit: Someone's post reminded me of something. I have been stung by a bee before, but sadly it was because I stepped on a dead bee. lol

Mirby August 20th, 2010 6:28 PM

Same here. I'm not afraid of them, I just don't like 'em.

rainbow August 21st, 2010 1:05 AM

Bees? I love them.
Wasps? That's another story!

Mirby August 21st, 2010 1:43 AM

Oh god, that reminds me of a story. So we had this old fridge outside, unplugged, and wasps had gotten into it. We had no idea the severity of the situation...

Until my stepdad ripped the door open, thus ripping the hive that covered about 50% of the interior of the fridge open, creating a massive swarm.

That was not a fun day.

SIN1488 August 21st, 2010 8:12 AM

That reminds me of this news story I read the other day, I'll post the link if I find it. But basically, this cop got attacked by a bunch of bees, and was actually trapped inside his cop car while the bees just covered the outside of the car.

Yes my minions!

One interesting thing (At least I think) is how their lenses are made up of hexagons, and they make hexagon-shaped honeycombs. I'm not sure that those are related, but I do know that hex-shaped honeycombs are the most efficient shape to use, because if they used octagons or circles, there would be useless spaces in between each section. And if they used triangles or squares, it would supposedly use more material or something. They also make sure all the honeycombs are tilted up at 13 degrees, to make sure the honey doesn't spill out. Plus they use that "dance" to communicate the location of pollen. And I think bees only live about a few weeks, so it's not like they have time to learn how to do this, it's just instinct.

There's your biology lesson of the day..... ;D

i especially like bumblebees.

i'm not afraid of bees nor wasps whatsoever. not at all.
i know well that even if one comes close to you, if you'll just sit still, it won't harm you. so usually i'll do just that.
occasionally i get impatient if one keeps buzzing around my head though, and i'd push it away with my hand so it can get away from me on its own.
but if the reason they (usually wasps..) are near is food, i'd usually catch them in an empty glass, cover the opening, and release them again when we're done eating.
they won't die from just that. XD;

i do remember once, a wasp had found its way inside our caravan. i was quite young, and tried to catch it with my hands so i could set it free. i couldn't catch it at first, until it sat on my shoulder, so i thought that was my chance! but when i did.. it crawled right into my sleeve. in there, it stung me three times, until it came out at my wrist. at that, i finally managed to catch it with my hands and set it outside.

well, that's all i've to say.
SIN's biology lesson was quite interesting too though 8D. thankyuu .

Eliminator Jr. August 21st, 2010 10:16 PM

Bees won't hurt you if you leave them alone. I'm personally not scared of bees and walk straight through their flight path if I need to get somewhere and they're in the way. I don't get hurt by bee stings for some reason so it's not much of a big deal for me.

That was interesting to hear though, SIN.

As for your story, that's pretty much what happened to us. Trapped in the vehicle, we left for my brother's for dinner and stayed a bit longer than normal to ensure the swarm had died down a bit.

It hadn't. :P
