Hoping they bring back the Pokemon follow feature

Anyone else really hopeing that they bring it back? Why? Why wouldn't they? Discuss.

Turnabout August 16th, 2010 4:20 PM

I desperately wish they would, but it's pretty clear by now that it's not a part of B/W, but ahhhhhh!
That has got to be my fav feature of HGSS, it really brought you closer to your pokemon.

I guess it's (probably) missing so as to make space for other features. I'm not really sure how memory on ds games work, but it's probably something like that.

countryemo August 16th, 2010 4:28 PM

They probelly wont. i didnt even like it that muich :P
you cant except a feature you like to be in everygame or the one after that.
oh well, just pick up HG or SS
and there you go =]

GSCyndaquil19 August 16th, 2010 6:11 PM

i dont get why they wouldnt put it in B&W even after they find out how popular it is with their fans in HGSS

Kylie-chan August 16th, 2010 6:14 PM

I honestly don't understand why they wouldn't put it in. I think it was one of the spiffiest features in HGSS, and it was one of the most oft-requested by fans. It went down really well, too! The only hope left is that you can turn it off / put your Pokemon back in its PokeBall (which would be a good feature as well) and they've had it turned off just to tease us. :3 But I don't really believe that. Just a hope.

mkgroudon91 August 16th, 2010 6:17 PM

Probably because they don't want the spriters to do now all the sprites and sprite animations for the new pokemons, focusing on other major things.
Maybe in the next edition of black and white(gray? xD) we will see them.

Ho-Oh August 16th, 2010 6:23 PM

I know we do have a Follow Me feature last posted in one month ago from today (or tomorrow depending on your timezone), but I don't want to be too picky, so I'm going to allow this. As for the discussion in general, it is not confirmed that the feature is gone - so we can only judge what our eyes see, which means, posts saying "This feature is gone I saw in the screenshots!" are pointless, because there is still a slight chance of there still being the feature; it may just be optional. So until we get official confirmation, don't go saying it won't happen.

I really hope it does come back though, because it just made the games so much more personal.

Giratina ♀ August 16th, 2010 6:40 PM

Eh, I'm not a fan. It felt very nice when I had a Steelix or something behind me and I was in a Pokémon Center, to be able to walk around without another thing to control dangling along behind. Besides, it caused some pretty unpleasant graphical mess-ups when you had a larger Pokémon (Ho-oh being the case in point) going around behind you; parts blending into trees, the Pokémon being on top of the player, etc.

I found those graphical mess ups as small, not so big of a problem :)
I hope they bring them back in the Hoenn Remakes at least :3

orange discontent August 16th, 2010 8:17 PM

It was nice, but I won't die without it.

Yellow did the feature better, IMO. I liked it when the overworld graphics weren't so specific, actually.

Tyxomm August 16th, 2010 8:45 PM

It would be nice, yeah...
But as long as they have an option to turn it of.
(I don't wan't every pokemon to follow me, bigass unrealistic pokemon like groudon, dialga, palkia)

You forgot Wailord...it wasn't as big as it should have been...

Sora's Nobody August 16th, 2010 9:17 PM

Yeah i would really like this feature back. It just felt nice to be able to travel around with your pokemon.

Totaldile August 16th, 2010 9:30 PM

They probably didn't include it because they wanted people to buy HG/SS the more expensive pokemon games.

Stupid Money-grabbing Pokemon.

austy14 August 17th, 2010 5:27 AM

They probably didn't because they would have to make overworld Pokemon sprites compatible with the new graphics features, same reason why feature wasn't released until HG/SS (Amity square in D/P/Pt was to see how it would work). They might in a later game. Though I hope its a super secret feature that you can turn on/off.

Kanto_Johto August 17th, 2010 5:47 AM

I don't really care all that much for it, but it was pretty cool.

It baffles me as to why they would though. It was all over the box and instruction manual - "ZOMFG KIDS OMG LOOK YOU CAN HAVE YOUR POKEMON FOLLOW YOU OMFG KIDS AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".

Also, it was quite a popular feature amongst the fans, so I don't see why they wouldn't add it back in.

BiohazardX August 17th, 2010 6:05 AM

It was in HG/SS and they are trying to add a lot of new additions to the series, so it might not be added; but it would be pretty nifty if they brung it back.

Like Tyxomm said, it would be great if you could turn it off too. If they would only follow you when reaching max. happiness or something instead of just following you in HG/SS it would be a bit nicer, so they'd only follow you then.

:D

Truthfully, Pokemon fans are so excited about Black and White already that it wouldn't make much more excitement than we have already. And why do extra work? Just saying.

Giratina ♀ August 17th, 2010 6:29 AM

I think that we should be able to choose which Pokémon from our party could follow us around, not just the first one on the list. I would be very happy if I could have my Murkrow follow me around everywhere, but of course I can't put him in the first slot all the time, so... yeah, just the complaints of a fangirl, no reason to be alarmed.

Yeah ur right, but i guess they might put it back again in the third game, to reignite the fire :D

allBlue August 17th, 2010 6:33 AM

They probably didn't include it due to memory related issues - remember B/W has significant graphic improvements compared to previous versions.

Also I doubt that at this stage they'd have mapped all those new 150 pokemon sprites together outside of battles.

This is probably the case. Throwing the feature in the third game is a good way to promote sales.

Yeah, my thoughts (and wishes) exactly.

It stinks that the feature *seems* not to be present because I absolutely loved it, but that would definitely make me buy the third installment of this games, specially after I felt fond of some of this new pokemon!

Volroc August 17th, 2010 9:18 AM

itll be in the 3rd version, since as we know D/P where guinea pigs for the DS, B/W are guinea pigs for all these new features they probably took it out since B/W are test runs& once they see how well B/W run, the 3rd version will be fixed, updated& improved like they did with Platinum therefore "Grey" will probably have the feature reintroduced,& revamped along with everything in B&W along with a huge update (& trust me, NDS games dont take as much memory as you think)

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire August 17th, 2010 10:30 AM

It seems more likely to me that they will bring it back in the remakes of RSE if they are some than the third version though...

I hope they do make RSE remakes. They were my second favorite, only to the original G/S/C (loved HG/SS too!). And it would seem to fit the pattern if Pokemon could follow you. Though who knows... for all we know, you might be able to do it after you "beat" the game. All the scans seem to be pre-E4 so there's still a chance! <--Thoug pretty random, that last idea XD.

Golden Heart August 17th, 2010 10:40 AM

As much as I like it, I doubt it will come back. It seems to be an HGSS exclusive thing.
Not to mention, there is going to be a lot of sprites because of the animations..

It can always return in any of the games that come after this.

After the E4 I used the feature less though, I also doubt they will do that anyways :(

Yes,I really want them to bring it back.
It was one of my favorite features in HG/SS.

Hybrid Trainer August 17th, 2010 11:07 AM

Well i had an idea that certain pokemon could eveolve when you've walked around with them long enough. Imagine that, just walking around with your new Gen 5 pokemon and BAM evolution screen pops up and you get a new kick a$$ pokemon for your collection.

RockHardSemi August 17th, 2010 11:18 AM

I'd like to be optional. In a similar fashion where you go through your party to choose a move such as 'Fly', there could be an option to follow. The benefit of having them follow you could be creating a closr bond and making the Pokemon happier.

Omnis August 17th, 2010 12:03 PM

Well, from trailers that have been released, there has been no sign of it happening... but maybe you can turn it on and off... gawd I hope so.

nearlyworthwatching August 17th, 2010 1:25 PM

i don't think it's fully necessary. it is cute, they should keep it, but i wouldnt cry..

King Gumball August 17th, 2010 1:36 PM

I don't think the following feature will happen. If it will the images would have had the pokemon following the trainer, but they didn't which is a shame.

Ankoku Flare August 17th, 2010 1:45 PM

I wonder, if they do a third version and include that feature in there...

Darkfire_Danny August 17th, 2010 1:51 PM

Well it wouldn't be the first time they removed a nice little feature - Pokémon animations from Crystal were removed in RS, and the day/night cycle was completely absent from Generation 3. Neither of those absences went down too well with fans at all, so surely they wouldn't do it again? I can't imagine adding the feature into the games would be too difficult, but I also agree that having stuff like an undersized floating Wailord following you does kinda look daft. They should also make it so that you can ride stuff like Rapidash too on the overworld instead of just following you, just as a nice little feature :D .

Charizard★ August 17th, 2010 1:51 PM

I don't think they will, I was bias toward it. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it :x

Masterge77 August 17th, 2010 2:09 PM

They probably planned it, but took it out due to the maximum memory on the game card (HG/SS used pretty much all of it's memory up on the following features sprites), the third version, however, will be on the 3DS and will hopefully include the follow feature, mainly because 3DS has 5 times more memory than the DS for the advanced 3D Graphics the system has, I know this because the GBA has more memory than the GB and GBC combined, and the DS has more memory than the GBA.....

.....Unless the executives screw it up and have no follow feature in the third game, no matter how much the fans will ask.....

Bluerang1 August 17th, 2010 2:29 PM

It's HGSS specific, as a 10 year celebration. But it'll be back on 3DS for the R/S remakes to celebrate their 10th birthday in 2013.

i HIGHLY doubt that, considering firered,&leafgreen, that alone disproves your statement.
but the fans are pains in the butts when we want something we will get it :cer_pissed: lol

austy14 August 17th, 2010 3:55 PM

Well I still think they didn't do it for the same reason thy didn't in D/P/Pt, they dont have the sprites ready and the graphics programmed to allow it. I bet there'll be an Ishuu Amity Square where certain Pokemon can follow you as their test to see how the system works. Then hopefully they perfect it and it can be in RSE Remakes. Though I hope RSE remakes are on DS, with 3DS Features.

mrunner4home August 17th, 2010 5:32 PM

That's the dream world dude.

I hated the Follow Me Feature. It served no purpose. It was a cheap rip off of Pokemon Yellow. I don't think it even got as much love as most seem to think it got so they nixed it like the Pokemon Contests. Pokemon contests intro'd in Ruby/Sapphire, Emerald it was shrunk to just one town and replaced by Battle Frontier Prep.

Diamond and Pearl, they tried to make it better, people didn't really like it. They got rid of it and made the Pokethon which is a bunch of Mini games in HG/SS.

That possibly didn't go over well as there is a new Pokemon Musical. It was prolly a feature that didn't get enough positive responses so they got rid of it.

I don't want it back and don't see why it should be brought back. It was completely useless anyway.

I don't see your connection to contests there... but I look forward to the Pokemon Musical, being heavily involved in theatre myself. But on the subject at hand, I'm doubting it in B/W though I kinda liked it. Everytime I got a pokemon I would try it out for a while. Though I can live without it, I had since Yellow.

I'm still betting on a lot of new features in RSE. But I really hope follow-me at least appears in those if not B/W.

I also expect that to happen :)
I felt less lonely with the pokemon following you...especially in caves...

Andrew McKenzie August 18th, 2010 9:48 PM

Well, to be honest, they might have put it in with the option to disable it in the Pokemon menu, so like, you highlight specific Pokemon and like Cut and all that, there will be a follow option.
And maybe they just haven't chosen to show us that(yet?).

That said, it might not be in there.

austy14 August 18th, 2010 10:57 PM

Ooh, GF you can be so tricky! But at the same time the first scan of HG/SS was Gold and Chikorita. They sorta built up the entire game with that feature, so why would they not show it for B/W?

Ho-Oh August 18th, 2010 11:01 PM

It's probably not featured now because this isn't the main somewhat new feature for the game. I mean, yeah in HGSS, that was the revolutionary thing. In B/W, it's the seasons (not at the start, but soon after) and... yeah dunno about DPPt, but for B/W at least, even if it is included, it isn't the main focal point.

The Red Chain August 18th, 2010 11:05 PM

I recall a screenshot of Black and White featuring two trainers.. One had Zorua out of the Pokeball next to it, and the other had a Celebi next to it. Must've been part of the Zorua event, but maybe choosing when your Pokemon comes out really is a feature. I do sort of hope we have the follow feature still. It was fun to have a little buddy tagging along that you could talk to, but it won't be the end of the world for me if it's not in B&W. XD

But you would still thin kthat in some demo or scan it would show up, I mean people testing the game would wanna try it too? If only you could try the demo outside of Japan...

beauty. proletariat August 18th, 2010 11:38 PM

I think the following pokemon thing was just something to promote HGSS.

Zelda August 19th, 2010 5:38 AM

Well we'll be able to tell for sure, next month. :)

Like Forever stated, it might just be because it won't be entirely knew to the games or as others said, you could have the option to have a pokémon follow you or not.

Having the pokémon walking aside me gave me a reason to not use my bike half the time. XD I'd like to see them be able to follow me again in Black and White.

Spirit Albarn♫ August 19th, 2010 5:40 AM

It would be cool if they let you choose whether you want your pokemon to follow you or not, like the ability to go in and out of thier pokeballs outside of battle.

But yeah i definately want the pokemon follow system back in B&W

Cherrim August 19th, 2010 6:01 AM

I'm running on the assumption that the feature's been left out because it's not in any of the media shown off so far but... I'd love to see it back. It was honestly my favourite part of HGSS and probably the only reason I found the games very playable. But if it's not there, I'll get over it. I was pretty quick to adjust back to Diamond after playing HeartGold so it wouldn't be very different.

It was a pretty gimmicky addition and was meant to tie-in with the PokéWalker anyway so I can understand why they wouldn't add it back in BW. Sort of like how Crystal had animated sprites but they weren't an expected staple of the series until 4th gen. D: So maybe sometime down the line Pokémon following you will just be a given. *crosses fingers*

Shadow-Star August 19th, 2010 6:03 AM

I would love to see this return, but they probably won't because of all the extra work they have to do and looking at their videos it doesn't seem like its' coming back

What I read is that Celebi comes out for that event, not that it's already out. So that doesn't really point towards a better possibility of following Pokemon... :(

I could have sworn Celebi was already out.
It's odd how they went through the trouble of making a Zorua overworld if there is no follow feature though.

He got arrested by the Interpol Cop guy.

That's just for Celebi's event. All screen shots other than the event one only shows the trainer with no Pokemon. In HG/SS they always showed Pokemon following the trainers. If follow me system was in Black and White we'd have been shown something by now.

Well they always make a few overworld sprites. Like that random girl in the pokemon center with a jigglypuff? Or that guy with a pikachu? They always make some to fit some random side story or just to remind you that yes, there are pokemon here.

True enough, but it all still seems pointless to me.
Other than legendary overworlds. Those are just cool. :D

The rest of the overworlds are just there to say "you can't do this lolol".
Especially after having the follow feature then taking it away.
Nintendo, you suck.

They always take away features. As much as I loved R/S/E, when I first got saphire I was a little let down by some of the things they took out. Like animated sprites, nite/day, only one region, etc. but once I really got to playing it I learned the new features. I'm sure everyone will adapt. Plus, how did people feel after their precious pikachu no longer followed them?

From what I recall, most people were actually happy there was no electric mousy behind them anymore. :x
I wasn't, but the majority was from what I've read in the GB/GBC section. XD

I feel like a gerbil in an experiment.. "Let's see what happens when we take a feature away~"

serebii.net/blackwhite/isshu
hey everyone check out this webpage and tell me if you think the picture called city in the un-named areas section looks like a pokemon is following the character because to me it looks like zoroark and in the picture below titled factory there's a slugma wondering around don't get your hopes up but I still think the feature is available :)

I doubt it's going to have much, if anything from the past versions, unfortunately. We already know(at least, from my knowledge anyway) that we're going to have 150 completely new Pokemon, without any old Pokemon returning, so when you put two and two together, with everything being new and the Follow Me feature being introduced in Yellow version, well...

Let's just say it's just unlikely.

Umm i would like to point out this http://pkmn.net/news/pics/0710/22_evo.png Look it up on serebii too. It is an evolution of a lovedisk which means it has to include a lovedisk in the game.

Ho-Oh August 21st, 2010 9:13 AM

@MortyEcruteak
1. It's not confirmed whether it's an evolution.
2. That doesn't relate to the follow me feature.
3. It's spelt "Luvdisc".

On topic, regarding Pikachu in the past... I guess it wasn't as liked since there wasn't a wide range of Pokemon to choose from - you literally only had Pikachu to follow you.

Honest August 21st, 2010 10:57 AM

Not sure if anyone mentioned this already, but they could sure have it as an option. So you're happy if you do or don't want it.

Morgnarok August 23rd, 2010 8:13 PM

So,I have not been one to keep up on any of the black and white news at all because i hate all the gen 5 pokemon and i would only buy black or white for everything but the new pokemon.

So i was woundering if there was the same feature were ure lead pokemon follows u like in pokemon yellow with pikachu and SS/Hg Versions.

shuppet88 August 23rd, 2010 9:23 PM

I am really hoping they bring this back...:/ It was the cutest feature by far. I won't be too mad if it's not in the game, but yeah it can definitely be optional. Gosh wouldn't it be so nice to see Gochiruzeru (the girlie looking psychic pokemon which I love) walking behind you?

solaris knight August 24th, 2010 3:25 AM

I wish they would bring it back, but with the release date drawing so close, the chances are slim to none, and slim has left the developer room.

Zenith95s August 25th, 2010 10:37 PM

CAN'T POKéMON FOLLOW US?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Calm down... It's just not sure, but no scans have showed following pokemon so it's assumed *gasps* gone. :(

Surmonter September 3rd, 2010 12:03 PM

Most people really liked it. Personally, I loved it. I think it would be stupid for them to just take it out.

tons of people complained about a couple small lil things that were completely pointless:
wailord not taking over the entire screen (completely idiotic IMO, if wailord was its real size, you couldnt play the game)

a small graphically glitch where it would seem to stand on certain things (i never encountered it on the ROM, and their super buggy,so i think its just pissing & moaning over nothing)

& how you couldnt walk backwards right away you had to press the button switch (OMG! its gonna kill you to hold down the button :cer_no: )

now the only good constructive complaints i saw were:
it was limited to the 1st pokemon in your party where you couldnt choose just anyone in the party (is it really hard for nintendo to add an extra option in your party screen saying: "walk" & "return")

and the whole you couldnt choose to shut it off if you didnt want it (which would shut up all the pointless complaints instantly would it not?)

---------------

i personally loved the feature (sure ive only played on a horribly crappy ROM that glitched every 10minutes, and had horrible lag every 5minutes) i found it enjoyable, and i loved how my Golbat evolved into Crobat in no time
also walking around with my Typhlosion was epic
i didnt see any graphical errors, i found mini wailord adorable, & i always hold down the move button anyways so it didnt prove much of a problem to me
i did find the whole limited to first slot annoying considering i just wanted quilava following during several parts :P but i lived with it :)

well thats my opinion on the follow me feature, i really hope it comes back :)

Yeah i dont understand alll fo those complaints either. But who knows,m maybe they have added the option to turn of the pokemon follow you thing. and thats what theyve done on the pics theyve shown.

Skara September 4th, 2010 12:58 AM

it won't happen, not now not ever. I know why too. They need remake exclusive features right? the panoramas when entering a cave/forest/rocket place and now HGSS's following feature. It won't happen in Grey either, just like DPt didn't get panoramas.

Chub 777 September 4th, 2010 3:58 AM

Sadly, I don't think this would happen. Look at the pictures/videos of the game. Pokemon aren't following you. Shame, isn't it? :(

EJ September 4th, 2010 12:35 PM

One complaint I had was when you ran over a ledge the pokemon would "unrealistically" dynamically leap over the ledge to catch up to you. Of course I'm using the term "unrealistic" loosely in a pokemon game.

I wouldn't mind seeing the return of this feature since I thought it was pretty awesome and it didn't hinder the game.

E4 Red September 4th, 2010 12:40 PM

Option

I doubt they will, I think It has actually been confirmed.

I didn't really like it that much anyway. They should make it a option if you want to are not.

Yams September 4th, 2010 12:48 PM

I can see them making it an option in the thrid game as a gimmick to get people interested.

Its all about the monay

I thought the very same thing. And besides we'd have seen proof already if it was in BW, though an Amity Square-ish area is still a possibility

Shnappy September 4th, 2010 12:53 PM

I would really like it if they did, but I really don't think it's gonna happen. In the pics of gameplay and the trailer and such, it's just the trainer by himself. Unless there's an option to have your Pokemon out.

clancytar September 4th, 2010 4:45 PM

I personally think that it's a feature that you can turn on and off in the games. We've seen already Chiramii and another pokemon running around in the daycare so its safe to assume that they will include the pokemon OW sprites. If they include the sprites for the day care I think it is very likely that the following feature will make a return.
As to the reason why it hasn't been advertised, it was one of HGSS's key new features and a major selliong point for the games. BW will have a ton of new features to promote their game, it won't look good to say 'hey we still have that following feature'.

but yeah i'm not 100%, but I think it will be in BW more likely than not.

PlatinumDude September 4th, 2010 5:29 PM

I want this feature to make a comeback in B/W. It's fun walking around with your lead Pokemon and seeing their reactions in their environment. If it does make a comeback, maybe it could have the additional option of choosing whether or not you walk with your Pokemon.

solarowl September 4th, 2010 5:33 PM

i would like the feature of walking againg but hopefully pokemon would pick up more battle related items...
and as platinumdude said, i would als olik eto choose whether or not i can walk with my pokemon.

PsychoJigglypuff September 4th, 2010 5:43 PM

It would be nice if it came back, but it probably wont. Yeah, there are Pokemon overworld sprites, but a lot of games had those and they didn't have the follow you feature. Anyway, it isn't too big of a deal if it doesn't have it. It would be cute though.

Gardenia101 September 4th, 2010 11:37 PM

Truthfully, I've kinda lost interest in the Pokemon follow feature.

I think Nintendo should use the storage space on the cartridge for more amazing things.

diamondmutt1111 September 4th, 2010 11:42 PM

They will but you can choose if you want it out or not.

GlitchCity September 6th, 2010 8:49 AM

I practically fell in love with that feature. Maybe they made it an option now and they are keeping it hidden until the games are released. I cant see any reason why that feature wouldnt be included except that maybe there is already a whole bunch of stuff in the cartridge and they couldnt fit the walking feature in it

Well HGSS having all 493 Pokemon able to follow you, including forms and shinies, was a sort of buying gimmick. They wanted to implement that to make it more likely for fans to buy it, due to curiosity and how cool the feature is. I can't see B&W having it, despite how much I'd love for it to make a return. B&W has enough new features, like full motion. XD

I hope for this too its nice and brign yo ucloser to your pokemon.

Including some new features we have yet to see. o3o;

If it doesn't happen to come back and that was a just a HGSS feature, I would at least like to see something along the lines of it. Like back in DPPt, they had the Amity Square where you could take your pokémon for walks and be able to collect items from them. I would love for them to have something similar to that, but this time be able to carry any pokémon with you. Having only certain "cute" pokémon even excluded some of the cute pokémon which I didn't really fond much. :\

So if Black and White has something like this, I'd look forward to going wherever it takes place in the game.
