HMs - sooooo annoying!
One thing i dont like about training pokemon is the need for HMs.
Why cant Hms be taught for default use outside of battle without wasting a move space for better battle moves? Sure surf is an exception because its arguably the best water move in the game but moves like cut, rock smash, strength, flash (in AG), rock climb and waterfall... though i do use that one for phisical water types. Anyway just a feature I think would be very benefitial is having HMs be teachable in a different manner so that they arent used in battle if you dont want them to be. ======== other ideas involving this: Be able to get a bathing suit or swiming trunks to replace surf get a pick axe to deal with rugged rocks get a lanturn to deal with dark caves get hiker boots to deal with rock climb ledges get branch trimmers to deal with shrubbed trees For diving get scuba gear Get... well, just a plain workout for stength. Get a hang glider for fly As for waterfall... maybe you could get some climbing picks or something... For defog... well you got me there... The pokemon shouldnt have to do all the work! right? ======== The reason I made this is because I just want to be able to explore a bit with my main battle team without being met with a bunch of points you must turn back to a pokemon center. I like to train a team without the need for HMs to take up 8 whole move slots! thats worth 2 pokemon! And the old sharpedo and tropius HM fillers dont work in Sinnoh and beyond! |
It's actually never bothered me. It's not like you're building a competitive build team for the in-game story line, and most pokemon, if levelled high enough, can manage their own with just two or three good attacks on them. Hell, it's not like the HM moves are entirely bad. The only ones that are really worthless are Cut, Rock Smash, Flash, and Defog. The latter two aren't even needed if you know what you're doing, and the former two, you don't encounter the need for much in the late-game anyways. Everything else has at least 80 base power to work with. :/
|
Yup, they're not too bad.
Especially when your favourite pokemon can learn Cut and Rock Smash, but have Technician ability :P I find there are some points in-game where one of my team members doesn't stand a chance anyway, so I can afford to have a HM Slave :D |
Youve been playing to much runescape my friend O-o

talking about picks, hiking boots etc. replacing pokemon moves.
pokemon is the name of the franchise. Therefore the pokemon take centre stage, not the player-character. |
I overuse the move surf. I'd probably struggle without it. Nomrally I just lowe HM's, and then I come to a rock smash place and have to run back to a town and get a pokemon with the hm, or teach the move to a new one, and that can be really annoying.
|
Rock Climb would be fine if it were a Rock type move. The name made me think it would be. And Strength would be a great Fighting type move, as well. Surf and Fly are fine, and occasionally Waterfall. But like it's been said, everything else is just balls and doesn't need to be an HM.
|
Hms, are a bit annoying(since they were sometimes a waste of a move slot at times or pokemon slot if you use slaves) but it wasn't the end of the world that's for sure.
Black and White are lighting things up with reusable tms, I believe. |
They're a bit of a pain. However, I usually train a full team of six and spread out the HM's between them so I usually have the necessary HM on standby when I need it. A notable exception was HG/SS, where I needed two dedicated HM slaves.
It's not the ideal method, but it works well enough in the games. |
Oh now i see what you ment. Well I guess this is all about perspective on how you like to play the game.
|
Some of the moves are useful, but not being able to instantly delete them and the need for slaves sometimes can end up being repetitively irritating, especially in dungeons.
|
I don't like having to raise a team of Pokemon that are compatible with HMs. I like having all six Pokemon slots available, so HM Slaves aren't an option. I wish there were only five HMs like back in R/B/Y, four if you didn't use Flash.
|
I know I said I don't find them hindering...but I do dislike where Strength AND Rock Climb are needed. One or the other, please...
If there were just 6 maximum, like how 5 were in Gen I, then it'd be ideal. I often find having 2 water-type HMs needed is awkward...then I teach Rhydon Surf :D Hoenn was the worst though. Victory Road needs Surf,Strength,Flash,Rock Smash,Waterfall. It's OTT. |
Even though I don't like using HM's on My Pokemon, there still needed.
Because like Amore said the game is about Pokemon fighting and doing interesting things, not trainers. |
the only ones i use in battle are waterfall, surf and fly.
its been a pain when i want to teach a pokemon a good move but i cant because an HM is there. i dont know where to get a good HM slave. |
Given the lack of item PC storage in the latest games, is there any reason why HMs can't be overwritten by learning a new move now? I mean, you'll still have the HM on you, so you won't ever get stuck anywhere (even if you're reluctant to reteach the HM so you can escape).
Obviously making them permanent moves (except for the Move Deleter) made sense in the earlier generations, but now there's no need for that, surely? |
I'm fine with having HMs, actually.
Although the developers could've had us just use key items for certain tasks that usually require an HM. But really, it's all good. |
I gotta agree with the OP.. I hate when I'm trying to get where I'm heading and totally zone out bringing my HM slave. Get there and I can't get past an obstacle. Omfg it's so redundant and annoying. @[email protected]; Late in HGSS I even resorted to using the walk-through-walls cheat because I was so sick of not being able to bring my whole team just because I needed my HM slaves. </3 |
I've never really thought of them as an issue, some of them make moves for competitive teams too.
