Official NHL Discussion Thread

Didn't see one that's been posted in within the last month or so.

NHL Season is 1 month away.

GO CANUCKS! Been a Canucks fan for most of my life and I finally think were good enough to go all the way.

Livewire September 9th, 2010 4:27 PM

Not a big NHL guy, but I'll root for the Blue Jackets since i live in OH, and occasionally the 'Pens. I see more collegiate hockey than i do NHL though. Go Miami!

Aurafire September 9th, 2010 5:11 PM

I'm a long time Devils fan, so I'm PUMPED about the Kovalchuk deal getting done. I can't believe we have him for the rest of his career lol.

Kovalchuk was the guy with the monster contract right? From what i hear they're a pretty sound team. Hopefully the Blue Jackets and Mr. Nash can get to the playoffs this year. :/ i doubt it though.

RED BARON September 9th, 2010 7:46 PM

Devils are a solid team, when Brodeur retires, their done.

They tend to choke in the playoffs. I think it's 3 straight first round exists.

donavannj September 9th, 2010 8:01 PM

Ew. A Canucks fan. :P

All kidding aside, I don't have the confidence that the Wild will be any better than they were last season. :\

I think they have enough sense to acquire another solid goaltender before then, lol.

And yeah, it's frustrating to watch them lose so early :/

yeah, they do although its tough to get a Goalie. We have Luongo for 12 years. :P

Breaking News: Luongo Gives up Captaincy of the Canucks

Quote:

Roberto Luongo has relinquished his role as captain of the Vancouver Canucks after two seasons.

The team made the announcement on Monday, after Luongo met with club president and general manager Mike Gillis.

“Roberto has been an excellent captain for our team the past two seasons,” Gillis said in a statement. “We respect and support his decision to relinquish the captaincy and are confident that he will continue to help lead our team through his tremendous character and work ethic both on and off of the ice.”

Luongo posted a 40-22-4 record in 68 games in the regular season, and led team Canada to a gold medal at the Olympics.

He struggled in the second round of the playoffs against the Chicago Blackhawks, allowing four or more goals in three of the clubs' four losses.

"I am honoured to have served as captain of the Vancouver Canucks for the past two seasons," Luongo said. "Being captain in a Canadian city for a team with such passionate fans is a privilege and an experience I will always take pride in. I will continue to be a leader on this team and support my teammates the same way I always have while focusing on our ultimate goal."

The Canucks will announce their new leadership group prior to the start of the regular season.

WOW. Apparently he is alive. It was wrong

Quote:

In contrast to several erroneous reports earlier in the day, former NHL head coach Pat Burns is alive,

Burns phoned TSN on Friday.

"Here we go again," said the three-time NHL coach of the year. "They're trying to kill me before I'm dead. I come to Quebec to spend some time with my family and they say I'm dead. I'm not dead, far (expletive) from it. They've had me dead since June. Tell them I'm alive. Set them straight."

A report on Thursday suggested that Burns' condition had taken a turn for the worse.

The 58-year old has returned home to Magog, Quebec to be with his family.

MONTREAL - Former NHL head coach Pat Burns died Friday morning at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer, TSN is reporting.

More details to follow.

I was gonna say, I didn't see this on NHL.com, they usually have this kind of stuff lol.

MareBear September 18th, 2010 2:52 PM

Born and raised Flyers fan here. Most (if not all of you) will probably hate it but it's true, I'm a supporter of the Broad Street Bullies. And yeah, I'm so psyched for the upcoming season, especially the season opener against the Pens. I've been going crazy for the past few months 'cause hockey is my absolute favorite sport and even though it's only been a few months, I feel like it's been forever since I last watched a hockey game. =[

RED BARON September 18th, 2010 7:37 PM

My Dad's a die hard Flyers fan. Since they the 70s.

I Was really pulling for you guys in the finals. Facing the Hawks (UGH!) and I don't mind the Flyers.

Aurafire September 21st, 2010 5:04 PM

Preseason started tonight, maybe the Devils can actually hold on and beat Philly for once -.-

Sweet Candace September 23rd, 2010 11:18 AM

I'm a Washington Capitals fan myself. I think Ovechkin is the best player in the NHL (and that Crosby's a pretty boy.) Ovie's definitely not afraid to play dirty and rough and is basically the one guy other teams gameplan around and that leaves his teammates to reap the benefits of every team trying to shut down Alex that they get cracks at the goal. Another Southeast Division crown will most likely come the Caps way and hopefully they'll finally be able to get to the Stanley Cup after a couple seasons in a row of heartbreaking ends to the season.

donavannj October 16th, 2010 8:02 AM

Now that the season's started, anyone see anything interesting so far?

And I just might be going to a Wild game tonight! ^-^

RED BARON October 17th, 2010 9:21 PM

Canucks beat the Hurricanes 5-1 tonight.

Raymond with 2, Kesler, Sammy, and Alberts with their 1sts of the season.

Schneider looked great between the pipes.

vs Wild on Tues, and then the big one vs Blackhawks on Wed.

donavannj October 20th, 2010 11:01 AM

Hahaha! Finally! A second win for the Wild! We deserve winning hockey if we're going to be doling out $48 (That's US, not Canadian) per seat in the upper deck.

Aurafire October 20th, 2010 12:24 PM

The Devils are off to a very slow start, but it's only a matter of time before they settle down and start stringing some wins together. They've had a nice 5 day break to get their act together and work out the kinks in practice. I have faith that they'll be a better team for the rest of the season.

And if not, I always have the Leafs to fall back on! 4-0-1, talk about an amazing start, especially for a team that's missed the playoffs for...what, 5 years in a row now?

Brendino October 24th, 2010 2:16 AM

I'm a big Devils fan, too. It's actually been quite a disappointing start to the season, aside from Marty's 2 shutouts. I know the Devils are usually slow starters, but this seems like they're doing worse than usual. Hopefully it's just due to all of the injuries, half of our defence being rookies, a new coach, and some of the cap problems that throw them off at the start before they get back to their usual winning ways.

On a side note, Aurafire, have you ever been to the Prudential Center? I've heard it's a nice facility, and was wondering if you've had a chance to go since you're in New York.

I would absolutely LOVE to pay $48 (Canadian, although US and Canadian dollars are nearly par right now) to see a Canucks game from the upper deck. The cheap seats were $76 back in '06, and that was the last time I saw a game at GM Place. Besides the fact that games are sold out all of the time, even if you search Craigslist for a good deal, seats usually go for $80 each for below average seats against a below average team (my cousins payed nearly $200 for 2 seats just to see the Canucks v. Islanders last year). It almost makes me wish I lived somewhere like Atlanta where certain seats are ony $10 a game...

RED BARON October 24th, 2010 8:01 AM

Canucks beat the Wild on Friday.

Great win, 5-1

Malhotra got 2, Schneider got his second win of the season (More than Lou)

Yeah I have, it was an awesome time. It's a very nice arena, especially since it's only for Devils hockey, so the atmosphere is great. It was my third time going to see them play and I finally got to see them win, lol.

It'd be more if the Wild were actually a winning hockey team right now, I'm sure. Of course, they can only raise it so high before your typical Minnesota hockey fan would stop considering going altogether, since we've got other sports teams we could be watching in other sports that may be having a better season.

RED BARON December 1st, 2010 10:34 PM

Canucks smashed the Flames tonight 7-2.

Raymond with the hat trick.
