Nicknames
Why do you nickname your pokemon and what makes you choose that nickname?
|
I don't. I think Nicknaming is stupid. Say you call a Pikachu 'Sparky' right, It's not going to run round everywhere saying Spark..spark...sparky. It's going to say Pika...pikapi...chuuuu! I don't think the pokemon is as real as it should be if it's nicknamed. :/

I don't usually nickname pokemon because I don't have much creativity :p
But sometimes I make names like: ASHKETCHUM or Grey, Sol, or shadow. |
Well, if you own a pet in real life you must nickname it right? I have a peekapoo but I named him Cesar. He doesn't go around saying peeka peeka or cesar. He barks like a dog usually does. There's my two cents on that whole thing..
To each his own. You can nickname and you don't have to. I used to not nickname any of my pokemon because Ash never did in the anime. Well, no one did except for a select few people. I thought it was taboo, haha. But after a while I decided I wanted to give each of my pokemon different personalities from the others. I usually nickname my pokemon something that relates to their species. Or if they do something awesome or funny I'll nickname them that. Take my Rapidash from my platinum game for example. He's a male Rapidash but for the longest time I thought he was a female and I had named him Peach, haha. He's still got that name. And some pokemon like Staraptor I name it Aria because it kind of fits with the species. Aria makes me think of the sky, heavenly things. Birds fly in the sky. Whoooo o3o -is not original- Sure they may not be real, and they look like every other pokemon in the game, but for me, giving my pokemon a nickname makes them that much more special than some random bidoof in the wild. |
I used to give them nicknames when I was a kid, but now, I never bother to, really. I like their original names better.
|
I often give them nicknames... Breeze is my Pidgeot, for example. I think it makes them more special instead of being "Arcanine" - its "Flare". I just like giving them names :D
|
I rarely nickname mine, I'm abd at thinking of good names on the spot :P
|
Well, I nickname the Pokémon that I'd use for a long term, so I could have a better feel when training them. If I was catching any random Pokémon that would come in the way, then it would be quite tiring to keep coming up with the names.
|
I nickname like the first 30 or so i catch... then i just get lazy. Oh and i also make sure i nickname specials too.
|
Aside from markings, nicknames help me identify my pokemon. Especially the pokemon I want to keep, and the ones I wouldn't mind releasing. I like making cute nicknames, like nicknaming my female geodude Toph. Sometimes, I'll nickname them based on how they acted in the battle beforehand. A lot of the time, I cannot think of nicknames, so I never end up giving them one and just distinguish the pokemon by its marking.
|
I've always nicknamed them. I'm just sentimental I guess... I typically get both copies of a given generation and never reset one of them, resetting the other to farm legendaries and items, and play with new teams. I have 224 hours on my FR version... Anyway, I decided to reset my Diamond version because I decided I didn't like the name I'd picked (for my character). So I began the long process of evacuation of everything I wanted to keep. Too bad they made Pokemon Ranch useless for that purpose. Anyway, I'm not so sentimental that I wouldn't let ANY Pokemon go down with the game, but I am sentimental enough that I decided I was going to transfer my 4 or 5 boxes of Eevees before I reset the game (I plan on eventually putting them all on Pokemon Ranch...).
But I hate having Pokemon without nicknames. And once I transferred them to another cart I wouldn't be able to name them... So I named them. All of them. 4 or 5 boxes... It was over 100 Eevees I think. I ended up letting my cousin name a few, it got weird. I've always named them though. Some of my favorite names are the ones I used the first time I played through Pokemon; my cousin played it first, and named his Bulbasaur MiracleGro, so I named mine Weed-B-Gon. My Nidoking was Horny (I was pretty proud of that one), and my Articuno was Frigidaire, which is a brand of refrigerator for you young whelps who don't know. Wigglytuff was Tuff Enuff. Can't remember too many of those... I eventually had one of every Pokemon in my box on my Blue version, and they were all named. It was pretty irritating back then, because they had generic icons so I couldn't tell which ones were what pokemon if I forgot. I think I eventually put them all in Pokedex order. Nowadays I mostly take as many words as I can think of that I associate with a given Pokemon's type and/or planned move sets and the Pokemon itself, and mash them together to make new words. For instance, one of my legendary catching team is an Umbreon with Yawn, so I call him Bromos, from 'bromide', which is an obsolete generic term for a sedative. A Gallade I used on my main team in one play through I named Arthael, from Arthas/Arthur/Lirael and other fantasy knight-type names. A Swellow I made to use Thief with I named Birdlar (burglar? get it?). A Beedrill was Ovalisk, from ova for egg, and -lisk from the Star Craft Zerg unit names (Hydralisk, Mutalisk, etc). Candlejack the Gengar, Honalea the Lapras. One of my favorites is a flareon, Heleos, from Helios, the sun god, and (I think?) Eos, the goddess of dawn. That was either Roman or Greek mythology, can't remember which. She was a favorite team member, not a favorite name. I will close my DS and sit there for 20 minutes to think up a name. I don't name all the Pokemon I catch anymore, but if I'm using it for anything (even breeding) it will usually get a name. Basically, if you ever trade with me, you're probably getting a named Pokemon. |
I nickname my pokemon according to their features (usually) like Rosie the Rosrade, Mary the Ampheros (Mary had a little lamb) and Lady Geranium the Jynx.
|
I never bothered to nickname my Pokémon, really. I like their name as is.
|
I never nickname my pokemon. I have no sense of creativity at all.
Plus I rather stick with the real names. |
I like nicknaming, but I'm not very creative :(
My favourite is my Dragonair named Therru. As in Therru the dragon girl from tales of earthsea |
I Have Only One Nickname For My Pokemon N That Is
Gyarados-DragonRage |
It's only in Gen IV where I started thinking up of nicknames for my Pokemon. I usually nickname my team members and that's it. The names I choose aren't very creative, and most of the time they're just named after characters from video games. Though once I name my starter (who I usually keep in my team), I tend to base everyone else's nicknames on it. For example, I nicknamed my Feraligatr in Heart Gold "Wright," so I named everyone else after characters from the Ace Attorney games :B
|
I don't usually nickname mine, unless I'm going to be using them on wi-fi or if I'm doing some kind of challenge.
I would nickname them all the time, except I can almost never come up with names I actually like. ._. I end up making my boyfriend name them for me. |
I name anything and everything I catch. Whether it's a cool name, a funny name, or something just plain stupid, it's got to have one.
|
I wish you could nickname pokes that you got in a trade.
|
I've stopped. Up until Diamond I always did, but I didn't name a thing in my Platinum run.
|
Creativity, even with something as simple as a nickname for a Pokemon, is like anything else: it takes effort and becomes easier with practice. Let me tell you about a challenge I had... The game Phantasy Star Online is a dungeon crawl hack-n-slash which is basically all about leveling up and getting loot. But it had a weird system whereby your character's name determined the loot tables for dungeons forever. So half the names I thought of would yield loot tables I didn't like for that character. I spent at least two or three hours on names for characters in that game... It gave me some of my most treasured names; names I use for my characters in most games now. Names I can google and get 0 results because they're unique.
I figured out a method of building names piece by piece, just taking syllables that I liked and stringing them together until I had something interesting and pleasing to the ear. It was rewarding, but brain-wracking. Another way to get interesting names is to use random name generators. Seventh Sanctum is a website with tons of name generators; it's worth checking out. I would post a link to it but I can't because I'm new to the forums... Easy enough to google though. |
I always name everything I catch. Heck, I've already come up with the names that I'm going to give to any of the Gen V's that I catch :D
I enjoy giving my PKMN names; I guess it makes the adventure more fun if my team is my team rather than my army, and giving them personality is very important in doing that. I don't really have a particular formula on naming; I just try to name them something that fits them, be it cool or goofy. |
I think giving Pokemon nicknames makes it more personal and gives you more attachment to them. I only nickname the ones that I keep on my team though ^_^;
|
I hate nicknames. I never ever nickname, and I don't typically accept trades if they have a nickname.
There is only one nickname that I approve on my game, and as a matter of fact, for the entire time I've played Pokemon. It's my LVL 100 shiny Magikarp, nicknamed Goldy. |
It's great that you hate nicknames, Benjina, but are you going to tell us why? Get some psychoanalysis going. I'm always curious to know why someone's mind works differently than mine.
|
I only name my main party Pokemon, and I typically choose generic boy/girl names for them and I'm not quite sure why I don't get more creative with nicknames.
It's just something I do to try to get myself more attached to my Pokemon in the game. |
Well I rarely give my pokes nicknames, but when I do, I put A LOT of thought in it!
I never name it just by it's colour, or just make it's specie name short! |
I ALWAYS nickname my Pokemon. So far, there is no Pokemon I've owned that hasn't had a nickname. I usually nickname my Pokemon based off of their type, or species... Liiike... my Pidgeot was Pilot, Squirtle was Shelby (y'know... SHELby, because Squirtle wears a SHELL? :B). And sometimes I just give them random nicknames, or just make up a name that doesn't exist. x3 Like when I named my Altaria "Tasani". :P
|
Every single Pokemon I catch, It is nicknamed. But they all have random, odd names. It depends on my mood. Here's some examples
Giratina: Xae Dialga: Shereudia Crobat: Tashadele Heatran: Caedymius Rotom: Ha'luu Cresselia: Ena Froslass: Verina Drifblim: Anoxor Pelipper: Calkirso Machampt: Alaephe Dugtrio: Casienon Haunter: Calan Skarmory: Kudisu Luxray: Vessai Chatot: Decadieur (one of my faves) Clamperl: Eden Deoxys: Seleria Camerupts: Calvucio, Hited Blaziken: Vohelsa Seadra: Daedone Riolu: Kaleseba Heracross: Ssorcareha Swellow: Lerebiase Umbreon: Lantilane Marill: Loeshi Kecleons: Acba, Ceba, Feebai: Kaizaisa, Kaiphona, Kaisuki Sneasel: Anaizia Spiritomb: Desphaeris Happiny: Avonence Absol: Kaishira Pidgey: Verali Arbok: Leitaneri Jynx: Calae Bronzong: Sau Le Victreebel: Menalia And I'm not even getting started ;) |

But that's what I like about nicknaming Pokemon. You add your own personal touch to each one, and that makes them different. Instead of you having a Pikachu simply named Pikachu like everyone else. :/ |
And something I can hardly stand is not being able to nickname pokes I get in trades. That's stupid. i don't want DARKRAI in caps or JOLTEON
|
Quote:
I hated how I would get Pokemon from trades in the older games like... FR/LG. Like the Farfetch'd named CH'DING. Tbh, I like the name, but when it's in all caps like that, it looks... ugly. =/ In White, I might have to breed the Monmen I get from trading so that it can have the nickname I want. :B |
I don't nickname my Pokémon because I don't see the need and even if I did choose to give nicknames, the names I'd pick would most likely be lame/dumb anyway.
|
I love nicknaming things. I think it adds a sense of ownership and personality.
I usually try to name things that are funny looking (in my opinion) funny things, serious pokemon serious names. But I usually use funny names. :b On my Japanese Black, I plan to name my Pokemon after all of my best friends. (They all fit into the character limit, luckily.) |
I always leave my Pokemon nicknames in all caps. Wild Pokemon and in-game trainer's Pokemon are always named in caps, so if mine aren't it creates an aesthetic dissonance that irritates me. I just recently stopped using all caps for my character names when I realized that none of the NPCs have their names in all caps in the newer games...
|
I have nicknamed a few, but for the most part I let them keep their original names. I do put the names in lowercase, so instead of having "LEAFEON used RAZOR LEAF" you get "Leafeon used RAZOR LEAF". I can't stand all caps because it sounds like they're yelling at me. Not to mention, it makes the pokemon's name seem even more generic.
|
I like nicknaming my Pokemon :P It gives my pokemon a different feel to the rest and I think they sound cool ^_^ For example; Blaze, Dusk, Rage, Flame, Inferno, Whirlwind, etc.
|
I go through phases with my nicknames.
Some I name people's names (from Internet lol), some get random names like Baboqua (umm, or something along those lines I named a Fearow in Yellow o_O;), some get competely... not relative names (like naming a Walrein "Firefly") and the rest, I dunno tbh. Now I don't think I nickname Pokemon as often, though. |
I find it great fun to nickname my pokes! Just see my Nuzlocke challenge x) I had a run once where I wanted a party of:
Charizard Fearow Dugtrio Jolteon Seadra Dragonite I named them: Apollo Olio Cello Leo Arrow Io Those were my favourites :) Also, when I breed pokemon en masse, I end up nicknaming them for reference. I had a letter/number system going with my multiple Corphishes :> My Aerodactyls and Bulbasaurs (over 20 each, on FireRed) were all nicknamed properly, though. The best Aero I bred also had the best name - Sawfang : D So yes, I'm a fan of nicknames. |
Sometimes I will. I like naming some of my epic Pokemon with the word "troll" somewhere int heir original name. Like, "Trollados" for Gyarados. xD
Or "Electroll" for Electrode. c: |

I only nickname Pokemon if an idea comes up, which is pretty rare. A Swinub I caught was nicknamed "Truffle" because the description mentioned locating mushrooms. The rare truffle mushrooms are most commonly harvested by pigs who have a natural tendency to dig for them.
|
I don't nickname my Pokemon at all, but when I do get B/W, I have the strong urge to give them nicknames, naming my Pokemon after BIONICLE and Yu-Gi-Oh! characters, such as:
Jaroda = Kongu (Jaroda isn't as strong as the other starters, but it's pretty fast) Ononokusu = Kardas/AxeDrago (Axe Dragonute) Doryuuzu = Grand Mole |
I only give nicknames to the pokemon I cherish most in my game. Which as of now is just 3 xD
I give them names that I adore or feel is suitable for them, just like how I name my pets or anything else. |
When I was a child I used to nickname all my Pokemon (or nearly all of them) as I thought it was cool to do so. But as I grew up, I found that I'd just use the same type of nickname for each Pokemon repeatedly which became boring, after that I just basically stopped almost completely. Not fully as I do nickname some just because I'm bored, but most of the time I tend to keep the name in its original state.
|
I nickname all my Pokemon, and come up with names for them on the spot. For example... my Typhlosion is named Torchwood, my Ampharos is Felicia, and my Sandslash is Harlow. I just pull names out of thin air, and generally end up liking them.
|
I often nickname any Pokemon that I plan on using. For out-of-battle situations like breeding, I nicknamed all of my Ditto to whatever nature they are to make it easier for me to pin point them. For other Pokemon that I am more attached to, I usually give them some creative nicknames depending on what I have sparked in my mind. I nickname my Pokemon to show people that "sure, you may have the same Pokemon as me, but mine stands on its own as something more!" Some are MegaMan references, some are from other games, some I base strongly off of that Pokemon's power, and some are epic names that I happen to find on the internet. Here are some examples: Plusle and Minun- Respectively Gemini Spark B and R (of course, I had to shorten it to make it fit...), Magmortar- Apollo Flame (Again, had to shorten it), Giratina-Nahtaivel, Gyarados-Daedalus.
On a side note, I notced that I have a hard time coming up with names for "cute" Pokemon.... o.e lol? Clefable was a fairy... nothing came to mind, 'cept Navi from Ocarina of Time. XD |
If I name a Pokemon, it'll be something that randomly springs to the top of my head. If I can't think of anything, I just leave it.
|
i never nickname any of my pokemon
|
I never nickname my Pokemon unless I'm going to trade it for a rare Pokemon (I don't have Wi-Fi, I'm talking about local trading)
But yeah, I don't like nicknaming my Pokemon. |
I always name my Pokemon ;3;.... it adds personality, I think.
But I wait until I know their nature and get to the name rater, so I can name them according to their nature. I'm OCD like that 9_9... |
Unless I'm playing on an emulator, and randomly skip nicknaming; I always nickname my Pokémon. Be it something serious, jokes, or complete randomness.
My last playthrough of a game, had me as a female character named Zelda, and my pokeys were named after the other six sages (TLoZ: Ocarina of Time). Also, I am not able to get over naming my hoot-hoots 'YaRly' or 'ORly'. It's stronger than me xD |
Normally, I Nickname my starter, if it's fire, it's normally blaze, Turtwig and squrtile get shellshock (yes, like the Blastoise from the movie "shellshocker"). and I normally give Nick's to my Hall of Fame Team.
|
Yeah I always name my pokemon horrendous, offensive and lullable nicknames. For example, JONFreeman the Arcanine, fagalicious the Quagsire, PuffyPotty the Ampharos.
|
I've developed a trend of ALWAYS nicknaming my Pokemon (I even have a whole Microsoft Word document set up for just this purpose, but mainly for if ever my save file gets wiped and I forget nicknames), mostly due to the argument of "calling a Pokemon by its original species name is like calling all of your friends 'HUMAN' all the time when trying to get their attention." Thus, nicknames are applied just like humans have given first names and pets have given names, in order to differentiate between members of the same Pokemon species and provide an iota of personality to them. :)
The only Pokemon that I will never nickname are legendary Pokemon (Uxie is the exception. When I first saw its name I misread it as "UXLE", not "UXIE" (must have been the lowercase "L"/uppercase "I" confusion with certain fonts), and got disappointed when I learned it's true name. I was like "UXLE (I pronounce it "ooks-lay") sounds way better than Uxie!") The reason? The first time I caught a Latias :t380: in elementary school, me and some of my friends began brainstorming for a name. The best we came up with was "LT. STAR" (as in "Lieutenant Star"). So yeah... Don't ask. :cer_laugh: In short, because of that odd but funny incident, all legendaries bar "Uxie" so far will keep their original names, which is why I always hope they sound cool. I name my Pokemon in uppercase. I tried the lowercase thing once, but it looked way too weird, especially in the summary screen when you see the lowercase nickname to the uppercase species name all the time. Plus, all of the proper nouns and names of people, places, and things were all in uppercase, so I just followed suit. Though I assume it'll look weird when seeing virtually everything in DPPt/HGSS in lowercase, with nicknames and species names being the only things that can be rendered in uppercase. I don't mind though; it's fun "yelling" your Pokemon's name! :D --------------------------- I had originally started a trend where my starters would all have the "-er" suffix in their nicknames: Charizard: Flamer Blastoise: Blaster Venusaur: Forrester Raichu: Volter/Charger Typhlosion:Flarer Feraligatr: Feraller Meganium: Leafer? (really had trouble) Blaziken: Blazer (first ever nickname I devised!!! :)) Swampert: Swamper Sceptile: Razor (exception) Infernape: Breaker (reference to fighters typically breaking stuff) Empoleon: ?????????? (had trouble, but in retrospect I might've picked Emperor) Torterra: ?????????? (had trouble as well) ...But this later seemed tacky/too forced in my opinion, so I scrapped the "-er" theme and changed it up to just standard nouns, etc.: Charizard: Wildfire (stemmed from Blast Burn animation) Blastoise: Blaster, Blast Boss, or BlastrBoss (undecided) Venusaur: Venom (stemmed from "Venu-" prefix which seems to actually come from Venus. But whatever! :rambo:) Raichu: Lightning (for now) Typhlosion: Override Feraligatr: Thundrclap (from Totodile clapping so dang much {albeit in a cute manner} in the anime! :)) Meganium: Vitamin C (reconsidering as it has nothing to do with oranges really, but shiny variant is more 'convincing' in coloration) Blaziken: [Trail]Blazr (originally going to be Blazer as he was my very first Pokemon. I lost 2 Sapphire cartridges and an Emerald save file. So, the "Trail" prefix represents that no matter the trials and tribulations, Blaziken and I will keep on chuggin' trailblazing through our Pokemon battles and adventures, persevering! :D :t257: The most meaningful name I've come up with so far, and the main reason I'd like a shiny Blaziken! :cer_boogie: (the colors IMO evoke a more powerful, experienced Blaziken) Swampert: Swamper, Hammer, Slejhammer (undecided) Sceptile: Razor or RazorBlade (undecided; leaning more towards Razor. Any shiny version I manage to receive later on will get nicknamed Knifejaw) Infernape: Crossfire Empoleon: Hatchet or Larry {01} (leaning more toward Hatchet. Derived from Steel-typing, apparent resemblance of a hatchet weapon for some reason, and from the term hatch relating to birds. Larry (-01) is derived from the name of one of my high school dorm mascots, which coincidentally turned out to be a penguin! Larry (01 suffix being optional) might be what I spell out using PokeBall seals, though) Torterra: Forrester (seemed more fitting considering the epic MASSIVE forest on its back; derived from Venusaur's original nickname) Enbuoo: Razorback (cool alternate name for boars; but IMO it'll look awkward whenever sent out with my Sceptile :() Daikenki: possibly Daikenki if English names turns out to be Samurotter or something different (Daikenki is fun to say IMO and has "dai" prefix meaning great/big. Also, kanji relates to fire, evoking a samurai otter that uses water with a sheer ferocity that is equal to that of a flame. :D) Jaroda: Poison Ivy (poison stemming from snake attribute; ivy relating to plants) --------------------------- Hmm...that's all I can say for nicknames from my personal experience. They're very fun to come up with, though. One of the most memorable/funniest/cutest nicknames I've come across was McShockers the Electabuzz :t125:, which I plan to use when nicknaming my Electivire. :cer_laugh:  I made a nickname for Magmortar to sort of match McShockers as well, but I can't recall it at the moment... EDIT: Just remembered the nickname for Magmortar - Berserker the Magmortar :t126:! Mostly relates to the other one by the "-er" suffix... Sounded EPIC for Magmortar, IMO... (Ballistic(s) was one I was considering as well before I settled on Berserker...right now I don't know you to use it on...) |
I nickname all my mons, but my favorite has to be my Combusken, which I named NICKNAME. You can see why in my Let's Play of Sapphire.
|
I always nickname my team. Something that the pokemon reminds me of.
But mostly it's themed. For my Sinnoh starters, I named them after fast food Turtwig- Burger Chimchar- Chips or Fries Piplup- Cola or Nugget I named most of my Heart Gold Pokemon after Greek Gods, or just random Greek names, because I took Classical Studies this year. Meganium-Lysander Pidgeot- Persephone Suicune- POSEIDON Lugia- Artemis Ho-Oh- Apollo Raikou- Zeus Latias-Andromeda Latios- Perseus Entei- Ares I became fascinated with Pokemon Creepypasta, so I named my Blue pokemon after things to do with death, hell, dark things. Yes. Emo, much? Blastoise- Kira (After Death Note) Butterfree- Shion (After the Japanese name of Lavender Town) Persian- Shetani (Swahili for demon) Flareon- Oni (Japanese for demon) Marowak- Sakura (Haha, it sounds contradicting, but apparently in Japanese culture, Cherry Blossoms are an omen for death) Aerodactyl- Charon (One of the beings of the underworld that guides souls down the river Styx) Yep, I love nicknames. |
Quote:
"Go! BURGER!" *Poke Ball opens* "TORTERRA!!!" I feel so sorry for those Starters, especially Turtwig. :cer_laugh: Hope it doesn't get eaten! |
Ever since Silver, I started nicknaming everyone. Usually naming them off of characters that I like from other games, or coming up with something really fitting for them. The nicknames for certain ones often change as I find better names for them, though, but these have usually been the ones I often use/ my favorites as of now.
Dialga - Aeon Xatu - Itsuki Suicune - Eusine Steelix - SolidSnake Nidoking - Ephraim Nidoqueen - Erika Typhlosion - Eliwood Charizard - Siegfried Salamence - Temeraire Tyranitar - Galamoth Kadabra - Silver Houndoom - Cornell Skarmory - VicViper That's just to name a few, though. :/ About the only one that doesn't follow my theme of naming them after things from Video Games/Books/Show is Gyarados, whom I nicknamed Magikrap. (don't ask why honestly....) |
I usually nickname them with themes, for example, throughout my recent LG save I had an Italian theme, I nicknamed my Hitmonlee 'Armando' which in Italian means 'of the army' because Hitmonlee is a fighter. In my Ruby game next I'm having a Spanish theme.
|
I used to never nickname my Pokémon. Ever since I started EVing and worrying about stats and natures though I have started to see them as more special. That's why I name them all after members of boy bands so it's like each team is a supergroup of N'SYNC or Backstreet boys. I'm telling the truth.
|
I usually go with whatever pops into my head. Sometimes it's clever, sometimes... not so much.
For example, this is my current Platinum team: Pinky (Shellos) Xuanwu (Torterra) Happyshell (Togetic) Birdpoop (Staravia) Faultline (Graveler) Kimba (Luxio) |
Sometimes I nickname a pokemon, usually if a PokeSpe character owns one with a nickname. I did when I first started on Emerald in '05, for example, my team was "Torchinatr","Gullywings","Ziggyzoom","Tads", and "Shmish".
I never nickname legendaries, however (except Phione). I used to re-name them so they were grammatically correct e.g. HO-OH became Ho-oh. HONCHKROW became Honchkrow. However, I gave up on that, as it was awkward when you can't keep returning to the name rater when they evolve, so now I just leave their names. But, if B/W turns out to stop capitalising names, I'll nickname all my fully-evolved pokemon to be grammatically correct before sending them over with the PokeShifter. |
I don't nickname my pokemon I think it is stupied.
|
I never nickname my Pokemon, I find it quite annoying tho :P
|
i actually love to be creative since being creative is improving your creativity thru stuff, so i change their names, -xoxo
|
I prefer to go for real names. My nicknames generally change with each file, but there always has to be a Ulysses (Love the name).
|
I do nickname some pokemon (my mains) because it makes me feel that they're more independent instead of all of that one species being exactly the same. I normally leave them as their name until I think of a good name, then I go to the name rater. I do occasionally get some cool nicknames like Zamm!! for my Swampert and TehBeast?! for my Alakazam.
|
I dont really ever nickname my pokemon but they usualy have a significent meaning
|
I love to nickname my pokemon. I would like to name every one I catch, but some times I'm just in a hurry and don't bother.
I think pokemon deserved to be nicknamed. I feel closer to my pokemon that way, and it makes for a great time on the game. If a name strikes me and seems to fit a pokemon, I will name it that. Or a name that fits their demeanor/personality, I go with it. I love to name them after minerals/plants. Jypsom - Feraligatr Shade - Haunter Gent - Noctowl Venom - Weepinbell Pyrros - Magmar ...Rocky - (I actually got this Onix from an in-game trade and he just stayed on the team. I hate this name and I wish I could change it.) My extended party: Jet - Lanturn Glacier - Snorunt Morose - Murkrow Scion - Scyther I'm going to start naming them more often and to get a little more creative with it. |
I normally only nickname Pokemon that I actually plan on using.
Sometimes I name Pokemon after what they're based on... Meowth: Maneki (from Maneki Neko) Dunsparce: Noko (from Tsuchinoko) Sometimes I name them something that their original names remind me of... Alakazam: Magician Clefable: Fairytale Somtimes I name them with Japanese words that relate to their element... Froslass: Mizore (sleet) Mamoswine: Itsuru (frost) Sometimes I name them after my pets... Arcanine: Pan Furret: Cali In the past, I even named them after certain feelings I had for them... Ho-oh: Love |
I don't like to nickname pokemon. Sometimes, I decide before restarting a game that I will nickname everything I catch on that run, but when I give them names, I get it from a random name generator so they are always very interesting and different.
|
I name my Pokemon after a person that relates to them, something that that relates to the Pokemon itself, or something that relates to that individual Pokemon. For example, I named a female Caterpie Misty, I named an Aipom Slingshot (I think you see what I was aiming at) and I named my Lugia, the very same Lugia that took over 120 attempts to catch and 4 resets because it either KO'd my entire team or I got it down to using struggle, Navi (because it was annoying) and I call almost every random egg Pokemon (Togepi, Happiny, ect) Burdon because I had to carry around its egg forever just to get a Pokemon I wont use.
|
i only nickname the pokemon for wifi battles, and give him strange names.
|
I don't nickname my Pokemon, it actually annoys me when people do for some reason.

I usually only nickname the pokemon in my team. The names are generally from movies I.E an Alakazam named Spock or books I.E Haunter named Lestat , Video Games I.E a Machamp named Kratos. or Mythology I.E a steelix named Atlas or Gaia depending on gender.

I'm not huge on Nicknaming pokemon, but since my Girlfriend has gotten into Pokemon, she names EVERY single pokemon she catches, whether she uses it on her team or not. Some my favourite names of hers are...
Female Quagsire named Plum Female Sneasel (who she refuses to evolve because she thinks Weavile is "ugly") named Daisy Staraptor named Beak Bellossom named Blossom (Original, eh? She named the oddish that, though, before she even know about Bellossom) and My favourite of all, her Infernape named Chimmy. Sometimes I like to name pokemon things that make me laugh. Like my level 100 Snorlax named Chad. Or my Tyranitar named Cecil. |
I never used to nickname, now I'll nickname most Pokemon whether I plan to use them or not. My names are usually at least somewhat related to their type or what they're based on, sometimes when I'm at a loss I'll just give them a random name like 'Todd' or something. And then sometimes I'll give them a name from a random piece of literature or something I enjoy (like Smaug the Charizard, or Lelouch the Krabby).
My current nicknamed teams are: HeartGold: Roosevelt (Teddiursa), Sauropod (Bayleef), Lelouch (Krabby), Blitzkrieg (Elekid), Behemoth (Larvitar), Quetzal (Natu) Platinum: Criss (Alakazam), Lexus (Luxray), Unihorn (Rhyperior), Bonaparte (Empoleon), Arsonist (Magmortar), Hawx (Staraptor) |
I don't really nickname my Pokemon often. But I did nickname them while playing Pokemon Black to ensure they had English names.. XD

I just got into nicknames earlier this year.
My soulsilver team: Meganium--Ziggy (idk, it just felt like a good name) Snorlax--Akamunchy. It was the baby of my old snorlax I got like 3 years ago and it too was named akamunchy, so I kept the name for this one. Umbreon--Yomm, again I just felt like it would fit for my umbrie. Sounds sophisticated to me. :D Charizard--Embzo, just too Ember and changed it a little. My platinum team w/ nicknames: Torterra--Fern, go figure. Luxray--N'kari, I took some Japanese word (can't remember) and added an n before it. Floatzel--Mizu'u, okay went overboard w/ the ', but I think his name is of swahili origin, I can't remember right now. Actually the apostrophe in Mizu'u and N'kari's name comes from Swahili. By that I mean I had just gotten into Swahili when I restarted platinum and thought the ng'ong'ya was cool so I replicated it with my pokemon. Scizor--SCZ, obvious right there. |
I've nicknamed a few of my Pokemon (usually from the beginning of a game), but mostly just anagrams from their original name (Rayquaza -> Aquarayz). I've also nicknamed some for one reason or another, but generally most of my Pokemon remain without one.

Dang it, Wasen! You beat me to starting a nickname thread. Well, maybe we can work this topic in with the general discussion of nicknames:
What are the funniest nicknames you've come up with for your Pokémon? Please include any background info on your inspiration! My favorite I recently named is a female Gyarados I named "Tyra". Why, you ask? Have you ever seen Tyra Banks blow up at someone on TV? Exact same face :P As for more serious names, I have several: Aloric - My workhorse Alakazam for most of the game. I just like the name. Lumeno - A shiny Alakazam I caught myself as an Abra. I started with the word "Lumen" which means "Light". I thought it seemed apt. Zuse - Metagross. Since the 'dex says they're like supercomputers, I named it after a pioneering model of computer. Khash - Garchomp. It just seemed like an appropriate name for him. Trip - Castform. Get it? He has a TRIP-le form like water at it's triple point (solid - ice, liquid - water, gas - I'm saying the "sunny" form is steam). I know, I know...nerdy and lame. |
I nickname all Pokemon on my main team. The nicknames come from inspiration and such. |
I nickname most of my pokemon. The ones I don't nickname come from the 'walker, and I'll never use them, so they don't get a new nickname. However there are some 'walker pokemon I nickname. Murkrow, ponyta and Magby got nicknames because I was gonna use them, instead of just letting htme hang about in a box.
BTW, Brendino, I LOLed at your Rayquaza nickname. It seems more like a name for Gyarados! |
I nicknamed my piplup pip. it was cute, but when it evolved into an empolean it sounded dumb
|
I generally name my Pokemon only if play Dragon-type...it not depends of kind of Pokemon (Dratini, Bagon, Seadra etc.) but name them Smok, Smoczek (dragon in Polish), Dragon, ****n...but only if I have an impression to do it...more often I named the character I play in very strange way :D

Here's a question: Do you give nicknames to your legendaries? If so, do you name your regulars or not? Why?
|
I try to give my pokes epic nicknames that suit them.
Espeon: Psycho- one of my less epic nicknames, but oh well. Poliwrath: Terrowrath- Because he unleashes a terrible wrath. Garchomp: Draco- well.... if you don't get it, you are stupid. Roserade: Aroma- It's female, it's majestic, and it's a flower, so there. Magmortar: Bazooka- Don't tell me that arm he holds up in his platinum sprite doesn't look like a bazooka Honchkrow: Couldn't get a nickname, caught it on SS and traded it to platinum, forgot to nickname it on SS. |
Alright folks, I want to give a nickname to a legendary: My modest Latios. I'm really leaning towards a Top Gun reference with either Iceman or Maverick. Thoughts?
|
Nicknaming Pokemon isn't usually something I tend to do, although certain Pokémon has given me some ideas for nicknames in the past. If I do nickname them they usually have their Japanese name, other foreign names or just some random ones that pop into my head.
|
I nickname most of my pokémon. At least those that I will be sure to use (my team always has 6 nicknamed pokémon). Although I don't nickname legendaries. Because there is supposed to be only one of them.
I just give them a name that matches their behaviour, habitat, looks, typing, whatever. :) Something that's catchy and fits them. It adds to the fun and feel. |
if i do name my pokemon its after real life myths/monsters
|
I only nickname Pokemon I use to battle on WiFi...I like having themed teams, e.g. I've got a Gyarados called "Lagiacrus" on my Monster Hunter themed team. I put quite a bit of effort into them actually - the name has to be right for the Pokemon, and the team has to balance as well. As a result, I don't have very many themed teams. xD
Otherwise, I just have an overwhelming compulsion to name every Spiritomb "Espiritus" and every Piplup "Pingu" for some reason. |
Shiny Gardevoir -Psyche, I had a male gardevoir named Psico once, it was my favorite... Let's say she's the female version...
Shiny Blaziken - Flare, was gonna name him Blaze, but seems like many other people named theirs that... Meganium - Megan, need I say more? Togekiss -Seira, just felt like it :P Umbreon - Blitz, named after my Flareon in Crystal... Which in turn was named after a Djinn in Golden Sun... |
I used to nickname pokemon but I ran out of names pretty quickly... I prefer to just keep their original names now
|
I'd never nickname my pokemon. I like to stick to their original name. xD
I'll nickname my pokemon if the nickname came from the manga, though. |
I almost always nickname my Pokemon, including the legendaries. A lot of the names are fairly uninspired or silly though.
For example, my current FR team: Frank 2.0 the Gloom (in my last game, had a Gloom named Frank) Shoe the Raichu (Chinpokomon) Not Chane the Kadabra (I wanted to name it Chane, while an onlooking friend said "Not Chane!") Donatello the Blastoise (TMNT) McFeldspar the Graveler (originally just Feldspar) Butts the Pidgeot (Super Effective) |
I always give my starter Pokémon nicknames. There is the odd time where I give another Pokémon a nickname, but it's really usually just the starters.
