[Debate-RBY] Rhydon Vs Golem

Well, I felt bored, so I thought I'll start something.

History: This debate was one I had actually participated in back when I sucked donkeys in pokemon, on Azure heights. I was on the side of Golem because it's my fav pokemon (still is).

Now, the actual debate.

In RBY:

Golem:
HP: Good At: Excl De: Grt. Sp: Fair Sc: Fair
(80) (110) (130) (45) (55) == 420

Rhydon:
HP: Grt. At: Excl De: Grt. Sp: Fair Sc: Poor
(105) (130) (120) (40) (45) == 440

Now, the argument was:
Who's the more useful pokemon in RBY battling?

I've always used Golem, and probably always will. I mean, Golem has decent attack strength for RBY, and excellent Defense. Sure, it's weak to ground, but you switch out, right? The HP isn't BAD, but could be better. Besides, it gets the move Explosion to take things out at will, something Rhydon can't really do.

Your thoughts?

Golem gets m00b. Golem wins :D

*agrees with khold*

The only way Rhydon > Golem is subpunching. Wait, Golem can do that to!
Thats not right, this is RBY.

Rhydon all the way
Horn Drill!

Agreed.

Nearly guaranteed KO > 30% KO

Thus,
Explosion > Horn Drill

Mana Lugia November 25th, 2004 5:43 PM

Well, in Rhydon's defense, since horn drill only works if you're faster than your opponent, you can actually Bslam on the switchin, and if they switch in a slower poke, you have a good chance to KO (30% is good). Golem, on the other hand, needs to explode, but you never know what you're gonna explode into =O

So to an extent, Horn drill would be useful. But not often.

I don't like to rely on OHKO... but explosion is a nice move.
Still, I think explosion is wasted in 1 on 1.

Kholdstaire November 26th, 2004 4:30 PM

Hence why we never said it was 1 on 1 ;)

Mana Lugia November 26th, 2004 4:51 PM

Well, 1V1 is obviously wasted because you can never win. Now 6v6 link though, very very useful =)

Do we have 2v2 in RBY?

Shuckle November 27th, 2004 5:33 AM

lol not that I recall. (s)he's got you there khold. =X

They were likely referring to the last monster left on a team versus the other monster left on the opponent's team. In that case, there is one monster versus one monster, and Explosion is useless -- you can't win if neither person has any monsters left.

If Composer of Requiems thinks that Explosion is useless in one-versus-one battling in RS/FL battles, he/she has never seen an Agilitygross in action: Agility, Sweep, Boom. I haven't competetively battled in RBY, so I couldn't say Explosion's effectiveness there, but I'm willing to say it works very well, regardless.

I find Explosion to be one of the most useful moves out there. I've caught many a newb using Skarmbliss, and then destoryed the two with a Camerupt: Explosion works wonders on Blissey. And they think they could use Counter to kill me after EQ.

Hmm, personally, I don't really like to sacrifice a Pokemon unless it's certain that I'm have an advantage. I'm fine with killing off a very defencive Pokemon with an explosion, or when there are no more major threats, or if the pokemon is already at very low HP, but otherwise, I feel it is too risky.

Mana Lugia November 27th, 2004 9:29 AM

I've been known to explode at full health because I don't know who you have out right now. =)

Btw, Explosion does not half def in RBY, but has slightly more power. (Tho it averages to less power after the def half)
