They are stronger, but they are a pain in the arse to evolve compared to the good old times

Wait, so can someone confirm that hahakomori only evolves after you evolve kurumiru unto kurumayu, OR is the evolution line split between kurumayu and hahakomori (i.e. hahakomori is evolved from kurumiru via happiness)? Coz I have a kurumiru and bulbapedia says it can either become kurumayu or hahakomori.

I dont have a problem with any of the evolutions for what they are but some of the levels are ridiculously high...

Maybe that's due to Caterpie, etc evolving so low that they weren't used often and they wanted it the newer Pokemon to be used often by the time evolution came, so that people weren't so tempted to evolve them or something.

Kurumiru is also much much more stronger than the starters and past bug Pokemon found a the beginning of the game.

I used it in the small part of Black I did play, it pretty much sweeped everything I found that wasn't a fire type or flying type. It's evolution was 10 times better. Never got it to the final stage because I stopped playing, wanting to wait to play it on my DS.

On the subject of radical differences in Pokémon of the same evolution line, I'd say that if we accepted the Remoraid/Octillery evolution, we could probably accept most of the evolutions here.

I never accepted Remoraid/Octillery, by the way.

Despite generally not liking gimmicky evolution methods (beauty, trade with X in party, depends on stats, location, etc.), I'm actually a bit disappointed there wasn't more of a range of new evolution methods this time. All we got was seasonal trading and specific trading (the method those helmet bugs use). Everything else was boringly normal (not to mention almost entirely methods from the first two Generations). Would it have killed Game Freak to come up with a few more variants? There's currently no "level up holding item X but only above level Y" methods, and that kind of thing is obvious in its absence.

I'm not liking the stupidly high levels many Pokémon now need to evolve. The high levels are only necessary for balancing, because Game Freak were obsessed with getting everyone to use only the Gen 5 Pokémon. It's not so much "progress" as "we don't want you to use the old stuff (from back when Pokémon was good)", and I severely dislike that pressuring. Although I will admit I don't mind it quite so much because I never do competitive battling, and I'll play with Pokémon I like rather than whatever the latest powerhouse is, but I'm sure plenty of competitive players will be a bit miffed at needing to use stupid-looking "creatures" just to keep their edge. The series is spiralling out of control, more so than people like to think.

I also don't like those Pokémon that bear little or no resemblance to their previous forms (the narwhal is an obvious example, as is Octillery to bring this post round full circle).

Spikey-Eared Pichu September 27th, 2010 1:27 PM

IMO, the higher levels of evolution are positive sign that Pokemon's "evolving". Prior to Gen V, you'd have Pokemon that evolve in the low -teens and cap at around Lv.40, 55 if they were Dragons. Now, the game makes you work harder for those oh-so-powerful evolved forms. Plus, the random intervals at which they evolve adds a pleasant little twist to the game for gamers who'd probably expect their Pokemon to evolve at levels divisible by 5, 6, or 7.

The Red Chain September 27th, 2010 2:17 PM

I enjoy the high evolution levels. I doubt I will when I actually play the games, and am grinding a Pokemon up to it's evolution level. That'd probably get tedious.. but as for now, I think it's a good idea. I had forgotten Kurumiru's evolution level, and like the rest of the evolution levels I'm shocked. It's strange for a regional bug to evolve at such a high level, even exceeding the starters, but it just shows how advanced Isshu is from the rest of the regions. :3

The new evolution levels will also make people work harder to obtain their goal if they're legit or don't have money, and it may also be a partnership for Action Replay to make more money haha. XD I agree on one thing though, I am very disappointed that the evolutions are mostly just pure grinding. That's incredibly painful to do, and no one likes to do it.. but sadly there is lack of trading, conditions, and evolution stones this generation. D;

This paragraph is also painful to read. I need to go back to bed. :x

But even weak Pokemon are taking FOREVER to evolve even to their middle stage! (Yeah, I'm looking at you Kurumiru and Fushide...) I mean, the two original bugs (Caterpie and Weedle) would be fully evolved by lvl. 10. O_o
But now, Kurumiru goes into only its second stage at lvl. 20!! Can you believe that? And I'm sure some people have seen its pretty weak stats...

And Fushide evolves into its second stage at lvl. 22, and is fully evolved by lvl.30. =/ And its stats aren't so great either... So I don't see how they expect for us to keep such weak Pokemon until they're up to lvl. 20 and 22. But I have nothing against these new bugs. They're probably my favorite bug Pokemon evuh~ :B

Even though that's not the worst I've seen when it comes to these new levels. Look at Wooguru and the vulture's pre-evolutions! They take all the way up to lvl. 54 to finally evolve. Crazy, amirite?

I said before and I will say it again, the early stage Pokemon are really strong compared to the early stages of the past generations.

Spikey-Eared Pichu September 27th, 2010 2:26 PM

Well, to me, it seems like a good idea. I mean, look at Wooguru, beastly, correct? So why make it easy to obtain such a powerful Pokemon? That'd just make the game stupidly easy.

ManhattanTheStarr September 27th, 2010 2:37 PM

Hmmm, I guess you're right about that. Must have a Fushide in one of my teams~
And Surmonter, apparently I wasn't here when you said that. No need to act all smart about it. =/

I wasn't acting smart, I was just saying that I said it before. o.o No need to add unnecessary tone to people's messages. =/

OK, OK... I won't argue about it. Let's just leave it at that. :<>

Yeah they wouldn't but they should have been around Metagross level to evolve at least...

Now, you see, my theory is that GF has come to realize that by the time you've reached the Elite 4, you're party is already stocked with the final forms of your game's most powerful non-legends. So, they want us to work a bit more to get to that stage, making the reward all the sweeter.

My theory, as I mentioned earlier, is that GF wanted to force people to use the new Pokémon, so they made them much stronger on purpose, and that the high evolution levels are something of a balance against their strength.

Pokémon is all about evolution, and it's pretty stupid to have half your species evolve only when you're near the end of the game. For the purists who don't look everything up on the Interweb before playing, they're just going to wind up frustrated that their Pokémon just aren't evolving.

The whole problem stems from one-upmanship.

Well I was surprised to see that Meraruba evolves into Urugamosu at Level 59. Before that the highest was Level 55 (Dragonair to Dragonite)

For reals?
And these two: http://floatzel.net/pokemon/black-white/sprites/images/627.pnghttp://floatzel.net/pokemon/black-white/sprites/images/629.png
Are only 1 level under that... level 54. O_O
But I'm sure there's some sort of reason for this. GF wouldn't make such ridiculous evolution levels for no reason. :x

Yeah, I was going to mention them two aswell, I think after they evolve they will be two really strong flying types (hence the high level evolution)

The same theory could apply to Gen IV which gave us such abominations at Rhyperior, Magmortar, and Magnezone who were made to be "Top-of-the-game" Pokemon, and yet, they were pretty easy to obtain. Atleast Gen V actually has you working for your powerhouses instead of "Let me trade a Magmar from my friend's game with a Magmizer so I can have Magmortar before the E4 LOL".

And for the people who aren't aware of B/W at all, I don't see the high evolution levels as such a frustration for them as more of a well-earned prize for training their Pokemon so diligently.

Basically, Gen V has raised the bar to more of a "Dragonite" standard, if you will. Back in Gen 1 and 2, if you wanted one of the game's most powerful Pokemon, Dragonite, you had to work extra hard, but the pay-off was great. However, considering the amount of work you'd have to put into it, a lot of gamers shrugged it off or just traded for Dragonite. NOW, a good 70% of the Gen V Pokemon are close to this standard, making the effort more of a basic thing than a "this is abnormally hard, wtf?!!!?!?!" thing.

Lol, true. :P
But I found it amazing when I saw some footage of Black where someone was trying to capture Reshiram, and they STILL had an unevolved Washibon. O_o Isn't the legendary encounter AFTER the E4?

But I think I might like this... it'll make the story seem... longer when you're halfway through the story and some of your Pokes aren't fully evolved. :3
I don't know why... but I always felt kinda empty whenever my teams became fully evolved. =/

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire September 28th, 2010 2:52 PM

Evolving my dragonite and Typloshion was a drag but I did feel like it was rewarding for me so Maybe it is good that they made them evolve at a high level :)

Spikey-Eared Pichu September 28th, 2010 3:31 PM

Exactly =) Glad my point got across to a few people ^_^ And, Starr, I feel the same way when my entire team is fully evolved. Kinda leaves you with that feeling of, "Ok, what now? Lv.100...eh"

Yeah it's kind of annoying to have to trade to get gigagaia (the rock pokemon with the four legs that reminds me of Metagross+Heatran+Golem)
