Avatars and Signatures

When I see someone's avatar/signature, I tend to imagine them as being whatever creature/person/item is in those pictures. If whatever is in your avatar is something that I like, I inevitably will like you more. And if it's something that I don't like, I find it hard to like you. I really shouldn't be that way, but I am. (This, of course, really only applies to strangers. Once I know you really well, it doesn't really effect anything anymore.)

Is anyone else like that, and would you change your avatar/sig knowing that the way others treat you may be based on it?

EpsilonE October 4th, 2010 11:31 PM

do you see me as a grumpy woman/yelling yellow man?

Aquacorde October 5th, 2010 4:52 AM

I think I view others like that. I don't know if people judge me on my theme... but if I like what I have then I won't change it.

Do you all see me as an reading orangutan? XD

Dakotah October 5th, 2010 5:14 AM

Neither avatars or signatures play any role for me as to whether or not I like someone, or could like someone. Avatars and signatures are representative only of the part of our personality we like to present to others. But it only reflects a portion of our true selves. An avatar or signature online is similar to how a person, who meets someone for the first time, presents themselves in a way that they think is most appealing and positive.

I prefer to get to know a person first before I make a decision as to whether or not I like them. Too often people look at one aspect of a person, and judge them on that single aspect, as if it represents who they are as a whole. As far as I'm concerned, by doing this is, we are being unfair to the other person, and not really giving them the chance to show that they can indeed become a friend.

Sakura is more an ideal that I strive to be like than someone to whom I am similar.

Xela October 5th, 2010 6:05 AM

Avatars/Signatures do play a role. It usually shows what kind of personality and feelings a person have.

But would you look at me as a Darkrai? I choose Darkrai because I'm a guy hiding in the shadows of people, locked away from the public. ;)

Åzurε October 5th, 2010 7:27 AM

That's a bad habit of mine. I remember thinking Lightning was a dude because she had her Sho Minamimoto theme on when I first got here (or started caring, but meh).

Yuoaman October 5th, 2010 7:42 AM

Avatars and signatures usually only represent gender in my mind for some reason. If you have a feminine avatar then I will think of you as a woman, sorry.

Trap-Eds October 5th, 2010 9:38 AM

Generally yes, I recognize people on here by their avatar. And yes, I know I shouldn't like or dislike a person due to whatever's in that little box, but I do anyway because it's the only thing I see. I can't help it. It's human nature. No, I'm not gonna change mine any time soon, I like Trapinch. And Maxim Tomatoes. :3

SIN1488 October 5th, 2010 10:52 AM

I just have a picture of Rin in mine because it's cute, and my user title is like a caption to it, :P

The signature rarely changes, but when it does it's mostly random stuff in it, mostly......

Banjora Marxvile October 5th, 2010 10:57 AM

I don't really view things like that. And if people viewed mine like that, I just think that is their opinion, but to dislike someone as you dislike their theme/avatar/signature... Bit harsh to me, but meh.

Hybrid Trainer October 5th, 2010 10:59 AM

Yea it does :/
Not personality wise its just like how professional you are and how mature i'd expect you to act on the site.
Example: (cos that was very confusing :P)
If you have a crappy avatar and no sig i will think you will be immature.
If you have an awesome and well made avatar and a kickass sig to go with it i will think you are mature and will trust you.

Also it also makes me think of what gender you are. like if your a guy and have a girl as your avatar don't take it personally if i think your a girl.

Unfortunately I am, but I mostly just judge a person's gender by their avatar/signature. If you've got a girly avatar, or one with a girl in it, then I assume you're a girl and vice versa.

This too, it makes me feel like a horrible person. xD But I'm learning that that's not always true.
(and as a sidenote, you have quite a kickass sig!)

Hello there little girl!
No but seriously, it's different if your gender is already listed. xD

Cold Fusion October 5th, 2010 11:30 AM

If the person's gender is listed then no, I don't do this, I would look at the gender area first. But if that's not the case then yes, I tend to do this, I really shouldn't but it's just something that comes naturally. If the avatar or signature is a Pokemon then I determine on how cute the Pokemon is for the gender of the person normally, if it's a Togepi I think the person is a girl and also for the male gender, if it seems more masculine, you're male. XD

jigglyppuff8 October 5th, 2010 11:49 AM

Men like looking at pictures of pretty/cute girls. Is there a problem with that?

I never determine gender from avatars/signatures. I am however very judgmental when it comes to these. I could care less about "who it is", but if the presentation is unappealing/ugly/etc., I would already have a bad judgment of them. Conversely, if someone has a really good avatar/signature, my initial opinion of them is already positive.

Eruption October 5th, 2010 12:03 PM

It sways how I think of them but I don't like or dislike people because of their themes.

Guy October 5th, 2010 12:08 PM

Being a simple question for people to respond to, I'll move this over to OVP.

For myself, I sometimes have a problem basing someone's gender on their avatar or signature, which isn't good I know, but I can't help it. ): I never judge them as a person though, whether I like their theme or not; I rather get to know them first.

As for my own themes, I use what I like - not what someone else likes for me. For instance, my themes since August have consistently been based on Guy from Tales of the Abyss. Since then, I've grown to like this character more and more, and plan to base more themes off of him. I'll change it to something else every now and then, but I like it for who he is as a character. Some may not, others might, but it's not for them to choose what I should use.

Alice October 5th, 2010 1:04 PM

I'm curious. My sig is a girl, but it's from a metal song, and considering the color scheme, I expect it to give off a masculine vibe. Am I right?

Charizard★ October 5th, 2010 2:29 PM

No, I could care less what other people think of me when they see my theme.

Amaruuk October 5th, 2010 4:20 PM

I do often (but not always) remember people that have the same theme for a very long time (or always have the same character) by that theme, kind of like having a face to put a name to. It really depends on the individual whether I actually picture them as that character or not, though. In most other cases I don't picture people at all. I've never been in the post-a-pic thread so I dunno what anyone looks like.

I won't judge a person because of their theme unless it's just so disjointed, messy, or cluttered up with junk that it gives an impression that the person is, too, especially if the actual content of their posts confirm this. I really don't see that too often at all, though. I might also judge if a theme gives off enough of a pretentious vibe, but only if I'm in a sour, resentful mood to begin with. Again, if the content of their posts don't back it up, it goes away.

インフェルノの津波 October 5th, 2010 4:27 PM

Um, I could care less about what other people think about my theme. The only reason I go to Rate the Signature above you is because I want to have a neat signature, which Malyka helped me(I still thank you, Maly <3).

But if someone thinks I'm a 11-year old girl, then they have serious mental problems because I'm pretty sure my posts show otherwise XD.

A Pixy October 5th, 2010 4:35 PM

You see a pink, floating fairy and an esper when you see me? o3o

And no, I make my Avatar...

Which I have to keep or I shall take full responsibility...

For something and my signature which I stole.

Huh. :/

PlatinumDude October 5th, 2010 5:06 PM

Most of the time, I imagine a user here as their avatar/sig. It's weird, in a way. When anyone sees this Gallade avatar I have, they think of me as that Pokemon.
