-Cygnus- April 9th, 2011 4:23 PM

Alright, here are my late final team impressions! I'm going to go ahead and use their current levels, since I can't think of a better representation...

The Individual Profiles:
Spoiler:

http://www.smogon.com/download/sprites/rs/178.png
Xatu- Lvl 55 (Female)
Adamant Nature
Aerial Ace, Wish, Confuse Ray, Psychic
- From day one to the end of the game, Xatu hasn't been the best when it comes to taking hits- in fact its the worst on my team defensively speaking. But what Xatu lacks in defenses is made up with a balanced movepool that includes the uber-powerful Psychic. However, the moveset wasn't always this nice, as I had to keep Natu's original attack, Peck, until after I had beaten Fortree gym! Early and midgame movepools were atrocious, especially SPATK-wise as it never got a chance to use its special stat until I tought it Psychic. Xatu is by far the fastest leveller, and Psychic vs. the Hariyamas Golbats of victory road make the levels fly by even faster. I should have made use of its poor nature by teaching it Shadow Ball, but for some reason I haven't -_- I don't think I will either. To sum up Xatu's performance over the game... Useful at the start and until it evolved. That's when it started to slowly slip down the ladder. I'm afraid Xatu's attacking capabilities just aren't strong, and its defense was even weaker. In spite of this, I had a lot of fun using Xatu. I've never been a fan of psychic types, but I think this one was actually weak enough to be used in game without killing everything :P

---------- 6/10 ----------

http://www.smogon.com/download/sprites/rs/128.png
Tauros- Level 55 (Male)
Careful Nature
Return, Earthquake, Take Down, Horn Atttack
- Tauros, Tauros, Tauros... Where would my team be without you? I was actually hesitant to use Tauros at the start of the game because this Pokemon's stats are really suited for mid-late game. There wasn't anything that could stand in Tauros' way until about the fourth badge. Up until that point, almost every single Pokemon (minus steel & rocks) that Tauros battled fell in one hit. It's stellar defense lasted even longer, somehow, and the only time in the entire game it fainted was to Steven's Metagross in the Elite Four. Much like Xatu, Tauros' effectiveness began to wane as the game went on, and soon it was taking two Returns to kill 50% of the Pokemon :( I don't have anything to be whining about though. This game changed my opinion of Tauros from "oh what a cool looking 'mon" to "ZOMGROLFCOPTERWINNINGWINNINGWINNING" sorry about that Alas, there is one tiny drawback to all this praise, however: I got bored battling with him. Return, kill, Return, kill gets pretty old after about 6 badges, and I was using my other Pokemon more and more. It wasn't so much that I was bored with him, it was that I knew I could easily just call out Tauros whenever I was in a pinch, and that it would take away so much of the game's challenge. He was used heavily in the Elite Four, though, as he was the only one who could actually dent Glacia's Walerien and the other tanks. After this run, I can now see myself incorporating Tauros into my teams a lot more. Glad I got to discover this "hidden" gem :)

---------- 10/10 ----------

http://www.smogon.com/download/sprites/rs/126.png
Magmar- Level 55 (Male)
Rash Nature

Brick Break, Flamethrower, Fire Punch, Strength

- Here's a Pokemon that really blossomed. Magby was the first to hatch, and I will admit that my grudge towards baby Pokemon lingered towards Magby for quite a while... Actually that's a lie, it never went away until Magby evolved haha. Don't get me wrong, Magby wasn't bad or anything, but just the concept of baby Pokemon has always bugged me... He was a good attacker then, and his ember was quite indespensible in a couple battles (here's looking at you, Wattson). And then when he evolved, everything changed. It was like a good Pokemon suddenly becoming great. Any problems I had with Magby disappeared, as Magmar's unbelieveable strength just blew everything out of the water. By the time I got around to using Magmar for major battles, I could tell that it was going to keep excelling as long as I used it. Even against the higher levelled Elite Four, Magmar was about to take out half of Steven and Glacia's teams with its Flamethrower. I'm not sure why I hardly ever use fire types, but this one and Ponyta/Rapidash I will have to say have got to be my favorites. If I had one gripe with Magmar would be just that if it doesn't OHKO something with flamethrower right away, it's VERY vunerable to massive damage due to it's nature, naturally poor defense stats and just being a fire type.

---------- 9/10 ----------

http://www.smogon.com/download/sprites/rs/87.png
Dewgong- Lvl 56 (Female)
Careful Nature
Take Down, Rest, Surf, Ice Beam
- Forget what I said about Magmar, HERE'S a Pokemon that really blossomed. My expectations were unbelieveably high for Seel- mainly because I've never played with a poor water type before. But when it finally hatched and I used it in battle... Well you know what happened. In case you haven't read my updates, my opinion of Seel as a Pokemon in the game is completley pathetic. It doesn't learn any water type level up moves, the only attacking move I ever had with it was base 70 and it didn't do half as good as Tauros' base 35 horn attack. It died constantly, it took forever and a day to level up, and all I could think about was wanting to box it forever. And then it evolved. I'll admit that my view of Seel was so low by that point that a rock with fins would've impressed me more, but nevertheless Dewgong really really surprised me. The effectiveness and power from Seel to Dewgong was like night and day. Suddenly, I was able to OHKO a Taillow using and ice attack (I'm afraid to report no OHKO's were scored with Seel), and take hits from Pokemon as strong as Tauros. Dewgong could only go up from there, and she did. Once I got Ice Beam, I finally had some offense to take down pesky flying and dragon types. What surprised me the most was her performance in the Elite Four. All of Drake's dragons fell to one Ice Beam, even Salamence who was 4 levels higher at the time. I'd be embarassed if I was Drake... He got destroyed by a Pokemon whose weakest stat was (and still is) SPATK :P I would give Dewgong a higher final rating, but there is no way in hell that I can forget the nightmare that was Seel 0_0

---------- 7/10 ----------

Good to read your impressions -Cygnus-, and I'm glad Dewgong ended up improving enough to not be considered your worst Pokemon! I also really liked your awards, which has inspired me to ask a question of the regular (or irregular) posters on this thread.

On the original post in this thread, under the rules, I'm going to put a little section of example awards for people's post-Challenge impressions roundup. So, could any of you suggest an award you'd like to see people giving to their Got Away Pokemon? Clearly awards like MVP and LVP are standard, but I was thinking of the less normal ones, like -Cygnus-'s "One Trick Pony" Award, and the like.

Stick it in this thread or PM me, either works for me.

Cathar April 11th, 2011 11:00 PM

After several attempts to restart Platinum which have all failed due to the team being boring, I'll give this challenge a try.

Name: Cathar
Game: Platinum
List of Pokemon that got away:
Spoiler:

Arbok, Rapidash, Electrode, Scyther, Flareon, Kabutops, Houndoom, Zangoose, Dusclops, Glalie, Abomasnow, Leafeon, Slowbro, Cloyster, Kangaskhan, Bellossom, Sharpedo, Salamence, Rampardos, Vespiqueen, Floatzel

Number required: 5 (but you can pick 6 and I'll either eliminate one or use one as an HM Slave)
Any specific requirements: One should be able to learn Surf, not more than two of the same type, otherwise go crazy ^^
I'll probably hack in the first two before the first gym and if I can't get the rest before the third, I'll hack them all in between first and third gym. Is that okay?

Cheers,
Peter

Yeah that's cool. Take the team Clairissa assigned you - I like people to get their teams as soon as they can so they get a full impression of each team member, and hacking is often the easiest way of doing that.

I've added you to the Challengers list, enjoy!

Does that work?

And I'll be editing this post later, I'm currently hacking in my first three Pokémon

Sammuthegreat April 13th, 2011 1:19 AM

I've added thenickel09 to the Challengers list, and I've also added the "Sample Awards" section to the front page. Please have a look at the ones I've suggested and post with some suggestions of your own!

EDIT: Also, let me know if there's any there that you think are stupid/difficult to understand, and I'll think about getting rid of them.

ack, I'm going to start it tomorrow. I have trouble with emulators and hacking (the latter I am avoiding as much as possible thanks for giving me mostly Pokemon that can be found in Platinum.)

Cathar April 13th, 2011 11:28 PM

Enough people posted, so I won't have to edit my previous post. I got a bit carried away yesterday because I found Pokémon Trading Card Game Online XD

I also changed game from Platinum to Diamond. My girlfriend still has an old save on Platinum that I didn't want to delete if she ever wants to play it again.

This will be my first update. I decided to make this a bit of a narrative, more for me to enhance my experience, but tell me if you like it, too! Since these are more work than shorter updates, this challenge will progress a lot slower than the Monotypes I do on Emulators, but I think it's good to have something to distract you from all that "powered" gaming.

I also decided to add a little more flavor to this challenge, so each of my Pokémon will be subject to one or two additional rules that fit with their character. I will change these rules whenever it fits.

So here's my update:
Spoiler:

Hey everybody! My name is Peter, and I’m a Pokémon Trainer! Not just some Pokémon trainer. Until recently, I held the title of Champion in the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon League.

Today was a very special day for me. I have trained and battled with Pokémon for many years now, and I have made some really good friends in that time. I’ve had many different teams of Pokémon of all types. Many of my friends have already traveled on without me. Some of them went back to their families, went on their own adventures or joined the team of another trainer.

But today, I will do something new. There are so many Pokémon that I caught, but just couldn’t take with me on my journey. This will end now.
I said good-bye to my friends in the Pokémon League, left my most powerful team in the care of Cynthia, who was the Leader of the Elite Four up until now, and set out on a new journey.
And with me I took two Pokémon that I always wanted to train, but never had the chance to.

Let me tell you a little bit about them.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa418.png
The first one is Link, the Buizel. This little guy is really fun, but also a little tiresome. He never stays in his Pokéball for long, and he loves to just run and jump around. When he’s tired, he likes to take long naps, but his sleeping place is a bit unusual. Instead of going back in his Pokéball, he curls up in my bag, after throwing out whatever item takes up too much space.
His favorite attack is Sonic Boom, which is not only really effective against low-leveled Pokémon, but also gives me and other trainers around us a horrible headache.
Spoiler:
Additional Rule:
- If he faints or is asleep outside of battle, I have to throw away the item that is either the heaviest or furthest down in my Items bag.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpffa/dpffa228.png
The second Pokémon I began my adventure with is Lexie, the Houndour. Lexie has been the sheepdog for my herd of Mareep for a long time, but now she will finally get to go into battles! She is rather shy and still a bit unsure of her own power, but when she does go into battle, she never retreats until she either overpowers her opponent or faints herself. Lexie is also not a big fan of her Pokéball, so she prefers to walk right next to me.
Her favorite attack is Ember, but she often sets things around her on fire, as she is still unable to properly control her power.
Spoiler:
Additional Rule:
- Can never be the first one out in a Gym leader battle until she evolves.
- Can only be switched out in battle after the enemy Pokémon has been defeated by her.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa100.png
This Voltorb has been following me ever since we started our journey, always rolling or hopping behind us. It usually stays at a distance, eying me and my team suspiciously. I have never seen it attack another Pokémon, but it often comes to a halt and is really still for a few minutes, as if it was charging its batteries. I guess I’ll have to wait until it dares to come near us, but maybe we can be friends, too?
Spoiler:
Additional Rules:
- Can't train it until I can give it a nickname.

I haven’t gotten very far in my journey yet. I spoke to Professor Rowan and he gave me a new Pokédex. The old guy is still as intense as I had remembered him. And I’ve battled a few wild Pokémon to give Link and Lexie some training before we take on other trainers or even a Gym leader.
I’m really looking forward to this new journey through Sinnoh and I’m curious what other Pokémon might join my new team!

Cheers,
Peter

A little guessing game for everyone: What are the natures and characteristics of Link and Lexie? ;)

EDIT: Had a look at the awards. I like them all, mostly because they encourage challengers to tell us a bit more about their team than just levels and movesets. If I can think of another one, I'll post them ^^

Loving the extra rules, I'm going to add a few optional rules to the front page. I'm guessing Link is either Impish or Lax, whereas Lexie is Timid or Bashful? Also, the Voltorb, I'm guessing at the moment, is probably Careful, Serious or Lonely...

Expect my Challenge to begin in the next few days.

Sammu I am loving the awards!!

Just an idea, as an optional rule you could have restrictions (like the Scramble challenge) as your optional rule kind of hints towards that.

I have passed 20 hours gameplay and have only collected 3 badges in my Hard Gold run...
