1. Photoshop is the industry standard in Photo editing/maniplutation, GIMP is the open-source equivalent used by Linux users who can't get photoshop.
2. Elements is the consumer version of Photoshop that is intended to do simple fixes; such as red eye removal, Photo collages, etc..
to say which version is best you need to examine what you will be doing, if all you're doing is simple stuff then elements works but if you want to get into more advance stuff like graphic design you'd need to go for a pro version like CS3 or CS2.
3. the professional versions like CS3 (which I use) contain more filters and effect like lighting and perspective transformations, added support for creating Slices used in webpages, as well as an easier to use interface.
( please note that if you don't want to end up spending $100+ go with GIMP)

Quite true, I would definitely use GIMP, if I didn't have access to my Photoshop CS3

Nytkoi February 15th, 2008 1:35 PM

Thanks, I'll try that, Gerri!

Questions! :D

1. How do you add a border?

2. Can you add a pattern for the background fill? If so, How?

1. Well.... You could bring them to paint, or just follow this tutorial.

2. yes there's lots. You can try to do this:
Make new image 5 x 5 transparent, use the pencil tool to do what you want, and then go to edit > define pattern, name it, and then when you select patterns, your pattern will be there! Or just follow these tutorials

Olz. February 18th, 2008 7:46 AM

Well.. lets hope this merges..

1. Can you download new backgrounds?

2. On the line tool - How come i only do arrows, and i can't change it! :(

How do you mean? New backgrounds for the images or new backgrounds for the space behind the pictures in the program (essentially the artist's table if you will)
If you mean the image background, then you have to make those.
but if you mean the background in the program itself, then here's how:
*to do this you need to be in Fullscreen with Menubars mode, you can achieve this by pressing the F key*
1. Go to you color Palette and switch to grayscale sliders
2. choose a level of grey/black/white that you prefer
3. switch tools to the paintbucket tool
4. holding the Shift key and click outside the image in the background, you will replace the old color grey with your new color that you have chosen in the grayscale slider.

If you're using a Mac, simply change your desktop background.

With the line tool selected, click on the black drop-down menu next to the blob shape in the menu up top. You should see some checkboxes for arrowheads marked Start and End. Uncheck them both and you'll have a clean line tool! 8D

Renyui! February 29th, 2008 8:42 PM

can i ask some gimp questiones? (well, its sought of spread around.)
1. Everyone says to put fonts in your fonts folder in control panel, but i dont have one. wats with this?

evilcheese February 29th, 2008 8:44 PM

it should be in your control panel. are you running xp or vista?

Renyui! February 29th, 2008 8:47 PM

i use xp, why? and btw, is fonts a sub folder? if it is, what folder is it?

evilcheese February 29th, 2008 9:00 PM

ok ill walk you through it. start by going to the control panel.

click anyone of the icons. (example appearance and theme)

on the left there should be something that says see also and therre should be one that says fonts.

now drag your font onto that.

Renyui! February 29th, 2008 9:05 PM

ah, i see! thanks cheese!

evilcheese March 1st, 2008 11:59 AM

glad to help.

can someone tell me why i cant brush on my layer mask?

Gerri Shin March 1st, 2008 10:16 PM

I'd say check what tool is selected and make sure it isn't something like the Color-Replacement Brush. If you use a tablet make sure your not using the Eraser end of the pen. Also you might check to make sure that Transparency, Pixel, or Position Locks are not on

Perfectionist March 12th, 2008 10:20 PM

Hey guys!
I was wondering about the best way to clean up the edges around a render?

Thanks!
~Perfectionist

Pikabloo March 13th, 2008 1:38 AM

Firstly, don't use the magic wand tool (if you do). Use either the lasso tool, or the pen tool, depending on which you prefer. I'm pretty sure that Loki posted up a rendering tutorial somewhere... Found it (click here) :D I, myself, am no genius in rendering though. I suggest looking for some other rendering tutorials on the internet, if you still don't get it. Or if you're feeling especially lazy, look for pre-rendered images xD That's what I do.

Perfectionist March 13th, 2008 1:46 AM

Thank you!
I'll give that a go!

THIRTY-SIX March 13th, 2008 2:03 AM

You can also use the pen tool, it's far more accurate once you understand how to use it.
