Do you spoil your Starter?
I noticed that when I play Pokemon games, all the way from Red Version to Soul Silver, that I spoil my Starter Pokemon. The majority of the time my Battle Style is on "Set" and my Starter is doing all the fighting. My Starter usually gets all the good items used on it, all the haircuts, all the massages, and all the ribbons. I usually only raise it which is why its around LV. 40 by the time I'm nearing the 3rd gym. I don't let it faint, I actually do scurry to the nearest Pokemon Center when its low on health. Lol.
So my question is, do any of you show a little or a lot of favoritism when it comes to your Starter Pokemon? |
My starter is usually the highest level Pokemon on my team, but that's about it. On my trio-species run on Ruby though, I've got a level 31 Combusken holding an Exp. Share and getting all the vitamins and I just got to Mauville, lol. So he's being spoiled until I can get my next team member.
I don't. When I play through a game, I keep all my Pokemon at around the same level and my starter gets no special treatment. But at least I do keep it on my team.
almost always.
except yellow, my starter got all the good treatment. especially silver -- I remember taking out red with a level 80 feraligatr and level 40 everything else (legendaries caught with the power/off glitch master balls :D). |
Not at all. Once I catch the other five pokemon I intend to take to the E4, I become real anal about all of them being within two levels of eachother and I don't give any of them preferential treatment. :P
I try to make my starter Pokemon at least 2 levels higher than the rest of my Pokemon.
I tend to keep them all even and sometimes I box my starter and and get a pokemon I like better of the same type I.E if I choose Torchic I might box it and catch a Numel or Torkoal
When I started playing, I tried to have my starter between 3 and 5 levels higher than the rest of my team.
Now, I only spoil it (in a way), on my first playthrough of a region; since starters tend to be able to hold their own throughout the game, and I like to try and train several wild pokémon before I choose a proper team. |
I used to spoil Pikachu when I first started playing Pokémon Yellow. But then after my game got erased, and as I acquired other versions, I no longer did this with any of my starters.
I used to, with my Swampert in my first Sapphire playthrough (up to the point when it got up to level 100). I don't spoil my starters as often as I used to anymore, though they're still usually the highest leveled Pokemon I have on the team.

In real life I'd never do that, although. |
I spoil them in the sense of the dirt they get covered in when I kick them away.
I prefer not to use starters, they feel overpowered and too unique. I do tend to favour one given Pokemon, though. Raising them all evenly is effortful. |
I just box my starter as soon as I catch one Pokemon. Starters are too powerful and make the game too easy. Also it's no fun to use a Pokemon that you know 1/3 of all people use on the same game.
No, in my eyes all Pokemon are equal. I don't even like using starters, they feel cheap and tacky.
If by spoil, you mean throw into the PC when I get better pokemon, then yes I spoil them..... XD
Unless I'm playing through the game for the first time, then that's what I do. But when I get Pokemon White and start with Smugleaf, he or she will stay on my team the whole time. :D |
For the first few badges i do simply because in the first few towns there isn't any decent pokemon to make an addition to my team.
I always spoil my starter ABSOLUTELY ROTTEN!~ :3
If I choose to level anything up to level 100, My starter in that game MUST BE LEVELED TO 100 FIRST! NO EXCEPTIONS! Though since Pokemon Ruby...I've always carried it's starter forward through the generations either through cloning or trading. I always trade it to my new version as soon as I can use it. (It's a level 100 Swampert so I've gotta collect the badges first.) :3 Really aside from leveling pokemon to 100 the old fashioned way, I don't do much else...because I think that EV training is a pain in the neck. |
Not really. If anything, I'll spoil the second Pokemon I get, more often (usually being a bird Pokemon). My starters only really got attention on R/S because for some reason I decided to raise all starters to level 100 for some strange reason.
Nah, I like my team being balanced. I just don;t like waiting to get the POkemon I want on my team as they are further in the game *pokes Johto, and possibly Isshu, not sure yet* It makes my starter way ahead of the rest. Well not really, I had my Chikorita at 10 while the other Pokemon I would then catchg would be at like 4 - 6.
In Emerald and Leaf Green I did. Not anymore. Sometimes I even thow my starter to box and never take it away. But not usually.
No. I'm cruel to my starters. I traded it near Shippou Gym.
I pretty much only use my starter, always and forever. The rest of my team is just whatever I get to use HMs.
The only sorta-exception is that I used and EXP Share in Sapphire so that I had TWO Pokémon at good levels. Also, I of course use a lower-level Pokémon when trying to weaken a lower-level Pokémon for capture. But I'm not going to stop using just one Pokémon. Why should I? It's how I enjoy playing the game. (Note that this only applies to starters I like. When I start Diamond someday, I'm boxing that stupid Chimchar as soon as I can get a good replacement. Then that replacement will get all the glory.) |
I don't actually. These days my starter is replaced the instant I find something that does it's job better
I usually keep mine about 2 levels above the rest of my team...except on Platinum when I caught a Gible and powerleveled it up to a Garchomp by the 6th Gym...
No, I actually stop using them after I beat the E4 :/
I've only spoiled my starter once, back in Sapphire with my Mudkip. He was like... 10-20 levels higher than the rest of my Pokemon, lmao. But I was an extreme noob at Pokemon then. That was like, my first Pokemon game. xD
The closest I get to spoiling my starter now is always keeping it in my team. But I think I might break that little streak once the 3rd installment of Generation V comes out. I want to use an exotic Pokemon as my starter... Like Zuruggu. :B |

I understand that everyone plays Pokemon their own way, but I'm wondering why some of you guys play the way you do, so strategic I mean. I get not spoiling your starter and wanting a balanced team with variety and what such, but why do some of you only have your starter 2 levels higher or just completely box it? As nerdy as it might sound, I think I only spoil my starter 'cuz that's what I would do if Pokemon were real. So I guess the new topic, side topic, whatever you wanna call it is "How do you play Pokemon?" |

Yes, I usually do. Only, I've boxed it sometimes, but the team then can feel a bit... empty.
When I first started playing Pokemon I used my starter pokemon all the time and it became way stronger than the rest of my team but now I try to use all my pokemon equally and have them all around the same level.

When I play through the game my starter is always with me no matter what but once I've beaten the Elite Four I tend to make my own team up with any old Pokemon I've caught then train them up and go back and beat the Elite Four once again, I repeatedly do this until I get bored and restart my game after transferring my old Pokemon to another game. Or, I will start to EV train them just for the heck of it. But yes, I tend to spoil my starter Pokemon as I grow attached to it the team wouldn't be complete without it.
I usually keep my starter about three levels above everyone else, just so the rest of the team knows he's the boss.
every single time they are the highest. except in yellow and heartgold. I mean, level 95 alakazam?
BEAST |
I spoil my starter Pokemon so much during the beginning of the game. By the time I got to the third or fourth gym, it would already be in its final form and everything. However, there are times when I do box it to train my weaker Pokemons. This happens a lot when I finally realize that my starter Pokemon is about five levels higher than the whole party.
I did that with my Ivysaur in Pokemon Leafgreen. Refused to let him evolve, and never let him faint not once throughout the whole game. If two of my pokemon were low on health, I'd focus on Ivysaur completely. Until after defeating the elite four did I realize I was becoming too obsessive and had to accept that he would faint some time in battle =/
No, I don't spoil my starter. In the beginning, I keep it a level or two higher, but that's generally gone by the third gym. Why should I make my Grovyle fight Brawly when I have a Sabelye that Brawly's Pokemon can't even touch?
My choices in items go to whoever's best for that situation. If I'm fighting Lance and only have one Revive left, do I give it to my Feraligatr or Aerodactyl to fight Lance's Charizard? I'd give it to my Aerodactyl for 4x damage to Charizard. No starter spoiling here. |
No, they never get anything more than the other Pokémon.
My infernape on Platinum, for example. It's trained at the same pace as every other Pokémon on my team. It doesn't get any more vitamins, TM's,...or whatever else there is that I'm forgetting. Yeah. No special treatment for you. D: |
I always tend to treat my starter as the leader of my team, but I usually keep it on par with the rest of them.
It doesn't really get any special treatment. |

Huh... Usually.
I usually keep my starter 1 or 2 levels above my team.
My team usually stays around the same level. I am really paranoid about that. So say my starter is the same level as my team, I HAVE to raise my starter before the others! |
My Torterra yes, But, As for my Meganium, That was horrificly weak.
My starter is generally the highest leveled pokemon in my team. It gets the massages, haircuts and everything else too. So yeah. But there will always be a few others in my team too.
My starters are usually no higher in level than the rest of my team. It's usually the strongest when I first start off, but after my second catch, I put it in the backseat to allow my other Pokémon to catch up. I probably allow my starters to be first inline for a massage, or haircut, but that's as far as I go to spoil it. By the time of the Elite Four and Champion, my Pokémon's levels become uneven depending on who was most useful and who was not. After that though, my starter is usually on and off my team while I try training new Pokémon for after the main game.
I usually only train/ spoil my starter until i get to the 3rd or 4th gym, unless i come across a rare or shiny Pokemon.
I usually keep the starter, and build the team around him tbh. Do you not find it depends which starter it is to how much you spoil them? I mean, in Kanto, I spoil my Charmanders because they need to be overlevelled to get past Brock and Misty, but if it's a Bulbasaur I'm using, he can usually walk through them, so I level my other pokemon more.
In Johto, I always level Totodile more, because I need Ice Fang to take care of Bugsy's Scyther (Rock Tomb is too inaccurate), but if it's Cyndaquil I chose, he gets levelled up in Sprout Tower and against Bug Catchers on Route 30/31, but then left as he is until Azalea's Gym itself. Again, in Hoenn, I overlevel Torchic as it needs to evolve to take on Roxanne, but if it's Mudkip or Treecko, I give the others more attention. In Sinnoh, as with Torchic, Chimchar gets overlevelled. However, so does Piplup so it's strong enough to stand up to Gardenia. Turtwig, however, doesn't get as much special treatment. Overall, it generally depends how many pokemon I can find to cover their weaknesses, and if they are useful against the gyms or not. |
No, not since R/S/E. In diamond I left my starter in my hometown but in platinum I took my starter on my journey for the heck of it.
No. I spoil my Jumpluff instead. More often than not, my starter is boxed/enslaved/hacked into something different anyways.
I try to keep my party fairly evenly leveled, aside from when I need to use a specific pokemon in my team to beat whatever gym I have to do before it (Extrasensory Togetic against Morty or Azumarill against Jasmine's Steelix, to give two examples).
I did make push my Feraligatr all the way to level 100 when I first played Gold though; I kinda steamrolled over Red with that. |
I don't spoil my starter usually I balance the level of my team
Yes, they are usually like 7 level ahead the rest of my pokemon.
Not at all, though I do have more pride in my starters than any other pokemon, with the exception of Empoleon in Platinum, whom I boxed after I got a Poliwrath.
