"smut for smut"

Quote:

Bibles-for-porn stunt draws crowd at UTSA

Members of the Atheist Agenda, a student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio, are encouraging students to trade in religious texts for pornography this week with their “Smut for Smut” campaign.
In the view of club members, religious texts are as smutty as pornography because they contain violence and torture and spark religious wars. But mostly, it's a public relations stunt meant to ignite debate and attract new members to the club.
As in the past, this year's campaign did not disappoint, drawing hundreds to UTSA's Sombrilla Plaza on Monday to either cheer, protest or inquire about the event and to debate the role of religion in society.
“It's a First Amendment right,” said Bradley Lewis, 18, a freshman from Pear-land who said he plans to join the Atheist Agenda. “If religious groups can put out missionaries and go knock on my door and wake me up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning, I can put a table outside of the college.”
hehe. how do you feel about people spreading their views, valid or not, in a blatantly offensive manner? do you think these atheist students ought to be applauded for standing up for their views in the face of a prominently christian society, or do you feel they deserve to be frowned upon for purposely degrading the word of god? do you agree with the point these students were making, that the bible's sanctified text is just as morally damaging as pornography?

A man threatens to burn a Koran that's not a Koran.

The world rages.

People distribute pornography for a Christian Bible.

...what of it?

Anyways.

It's double standard. Personally, I think it's lowbrow and fail, but...

Mario The World Champion October 23rd, 2010 3:37 PM

O... kay.

This is a first. I've never heard anyone say that the scripts in the Bible are as bad or worse than Porn. The whole Atheist thing seems to be getting steam and being more bold about stuff like that. But most people believe that the Bible is something good and Porn is the exploitation of women, which many religious groups consider bad.

I wouldn't be surprised if some firebrand preacher comes by and delivers a major sermon while this is going on.

Fever October 23rd, 2010 3:55 PM

I must admit, I like their style.
I also think they should be commended for standing up and expressing their own views, I mean it is one of their rights after all to do so.
More power to them, if religious people can preach in the street FOR the bible, then atheists can make a stand somewhere public AGAINST it.
Not allowing them that is wrong, it's a basic denial of human rights and it's nothing but double standards.

FreakyLocz14 October 23rd, 2010 4:30 PM

I completely disagree with their views and I think they are acting in a childish manner.

But I support their 1st Amendment right to express their views. I would rofl if one of those student's ended up being under 18 and they got in legal trouble, though.

Ninja Caterpie October 23rd, 2010 4:48 PM

Bad trolls are bad. They're not even saying anything; they're just trying to piss off Christians. It's not much of a "stand against a predominantly christian society", it's just freakin' real-life trolling. The only thing is, in real life, they get taken seriously (although they're 18 and it's porn, so maybe not).

I think this is once again a case of "discrimination against a majority isn't discrimination". It really puts out a bad image for atheists.

and this.

Legobricks October 23rd, 2010 5:16 PM

There should make a greater distinction made between antitheism and atheism.
I fit the description of apatheist, so don't feel as concerned as I otherwise might about their 'fight fire with fire' ways, but it puts out a poor image. It is simply human nature though, as it seems. I can't say I think it matters whether what they're doing is right or wrong, but if nobody were to thrust their beliefs around in the first place (as religions do and long have done, probably making it 'their fault' in the first instance) we wouldn't have these occurences at all.

Alice October 23rd, 2010 5:26 PM

Porn is bad. Period. Doesn't matter what religion you follow. Atheists support porn, apparently. They are now bad.

This is the only message they are sending by doing that.

Jolene October 23rd, 2010 5:38 PM

I dunno I think there are better ways to make people question their religious beliefs like maybe they could all get together and hold an atheist-themed concert!

It's statements like this that don't ever help matters. It's so narrow-minded and self righteous.
At the risk of flaming, which I am honestly not doing in any way, you obviously didn't read what they were doing.
They didn't use porn because they support it. They used it as a non-religious version of smut.
Hence the title, Smut vs. Smut.

Again, honestly not flaming or anything. Just having an opinion on a specific post. This can be deleted or whatever if a mod sees fit too.

Why would that be deleted? lol

And no, I honestly didn't read it... I just saw 'porn=bible' and thought, oh porn is their bible... and thus my post. (Being fairly sarcastic in both posts tbh.)

I hate antitheist atheists just as much as I hate overzealous theists.

Why do people feel the need to prove that their worldview is better than others'? It doesn't matter in the end. If atheists are right, there is no afterlife for any of us and if theists are right, they have no need to worry because they're constantly working toward their goals for the afterlife anyways. I'm sick of seeing this spiritual warfare all the time because nobody but those in the gray area in the middle of the spectrum would ever budge on their stance.

As for the story in question here, it's nothing more than irl trolling. Yes, I can sympathize with their reasons to reciprocate the zealots on the other end of the spectrum, but there really is no point other than to piss off the zealous Christians, one of the more powerful lobby groups in the state I might add. :/

and this.

If I was the DA, I would add a hate crime enhancement for the lulz. Heck, I seen a case where a man was convicted of a hate crime for yelling he doesn't want a gay man touching his pizza at a pizza parlor.

Wow that was kind of over board...I mean it's not like he hit the guy or something...now that is more of a hate crime...

Which is called...

A concert.

Really. Atheism is cool now. Hooray, Lady Gaga.

Facepalm. This is why I generally dislike gay people, they cry about pretty much everything minory against them instead of saying "That's what I am, gotta problem?". I hate people who take things too deep to their heart, generally. If they don't take everything to their heart then I don't have problems communicating with them at all.

Anyway.. trading a fairy tale for a wannabe American Pie.. sounds like a good deal.
In all seriousness though this is absurd. What happened to the old style of atheists that claim that the bible is a fairy tale and watch as religious people go "OMG!".
Well, I heard some people suddenly went extremely religious when some religious guy came and explained them thing, I don't see this any different from this. One promotes you closer to religion, the other promotes you far from religion.

Not quite. Both are bad, I'll admit, but the overzealous theist enthusiasts come, explain why religion is good, then force you to become religious. These guys are just trolling to piss off the religious; comparing someone's bible to porn isn't going to make them say "OMG I BETTER STOP BEING RELIGIOUS!".

Alice October 23rd, 2010 11:34 PM

Maybe they're actually converting to Christianity, but are too poor to buy Bibles. So, they came up with this plan to trade all of their porn away, and get Bibles for free at the same time.

Or print The Bible on this month's issue!

I like this line of thinking. People that are jerks not because YOU say so but because they are just:

Jerk. Pro choice. And proud of it.

Seriously. Where else are great comedians and good jokes gonna come from.

Like:

Q: What's the difference between Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan?

Spoiler:
A: Lindsay Lohan is still a virgin.

Then there is the dead baby joke. They seem usually get girls to go away.

I want to know a dead celebrity joke, but Michael Jackson is probably still alive. That, and O.J. Simpson hasn't croaked yet.

Both are some kind of drawing attention toward a specific way though.

mm, fair enough. Although one's being supportive of one (still not good) and the other's just dissing the other.

Blue Nocturne October 25th, 2010 1:51 AM

I completely agree with them and their cause. People saying how vile and disgraceful it is, I think are being ignorant.

When Britain had floods about a year ago now, a bishop (Or someone of status within the church) blamed it on Gods anger against homosexuality. To my knowledge, absolutely nothing happened, no outrage. This is a minor one, I've seen hundreds of occasions where people have gotten away with saying or doing something and using their religion as a flame shield. It's a frustrating double standard that occurs almost everywhere; I have nothing against offending people, but using Religion as a sort of ultimate shield is just plain wrong.

While that may seem like a digression, it leads me back to my point. Why throw a hissy fit over a group of students voicing their opinion against religion when other people have done much worse in the name of their religion.

That is, unfortunately true. If the roles were reversed, and it was a group of college students collecting porn to distribute bibles, I'd be equally peeved as I am now because I hate seeing people throw their religion or lack thereof in others' faces in an attempt to show them up. As Gandhi once said, "An eye for an eye makes the world go blind."

But the majority of people don't mind so much as long as the one throwing the punch is the group they trust more, and Christians are generally a more trusted demograph than atheists. This is why Christian radicals spreading misinformation to garner their numbers doesn't set off alarms but a couple of atheists trolling a college campus do. :/
