Ell Oh ell

There's an annoying new fad cropping up across the world. That is the use of text speak like LOL and OMG in everyday conversation. For example, saying "oh em gee" in a discussion instead of what OMG actually stands for, Oh My God.

It really highlights how lazy some people are now, that they cannot even be bothered to speak full words. And it begs the question, why say Ell Oh Ell when its actually much easier to actually laugh, smile or exhale in an amused fashion.

Have you encountered this mockery of the language? Do you find it as irritating as I do? To get a gauge of my annoyance, compare it to the Go Compare man (no pun intended).

Discuss.

How the heck do you suppose people will laugh on the internet? I honestly have no problems with it. Some people generally overuse it and place it without any connection to a sentence but otherwise it's not fun.

And no, this isn't lazy. How is saying LOL different than saying US?

AirBourne October 29th, 2010 3:02 AM

I agree with KanadeTenshi, We say "US" instead of United States, and "UK" instead of United Kingdom... Really, It's based on your opinion, Different People have different opinions. But, In my opinion, I don't have a problem with it.

Trish October 29th, 2010 3:51 AM

A friend of mine sometimes literally says LOL like a word, like saying lol in lollipop. :P

I think it's pretty humorous whenever we catch her saying it though. Have no problem with it whatsoever. xD

Thats not the problem, I use LOL over the internet and, admittedly, over use it a little. But theres no need to physically say LOL in a conversation.

US is different because its something that actually benefits from being shortened, both in the flesh and in text. Saying/Typing United States all the time would become seriously repetitive and bothersome considering how often it needs to be used in things like official documents or essays, saying United States all the time would also be quite annoying. LOL however, while it is convenient to write rather than *Giggle* or Laugh Out Loud, has no real impact on an actual, real-world conversation, where it's possible to laugh.

I do it out of sarcasm now and then, but thats about it.

KanadeTenshi October 29th, 2010 5:43 AM

"Benefits from being shortened"? How does it benefit from being shortened?
That's not a.. very valid reason for saying it's different. Actually what's more bothersome, to say "Laugh out loud" or "United States"?
It's still no different, since both are shortened version of the words.

I say "ell oh ell", "double-yew tee eff", and "oh emm gee" irl, but not that often. Well, the latter two, I say more frequently, but yeah. When I do use "ell oh ell", I often use it in a rapid "ell oh ell oh em gee double-yew tee eff ar oh eff ell ell emm ay oh". It's just in jest, really, at that point.

Personally, I don't really see anything wrong with it. However, when it becomes incorporated into literal writing (as in an essay, or something) it goes too far.

So, yeah. I think when people say "ell oh ell", they're just joking around, trying to be ironic, or just being silly. :p

It sounds Welsh and looks like a load of Lemons.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ October 29th, 2010 7:40 AM

I don't have too much of a problem with it as long as it's just conversing between friends. I really don't practice it too much but it's not one of those things that sets me off.

Seeing chat speak used when addressing professors or job supervisors (either written or spoken) is another matter entirely.

My brother and I have gotten in the habit of doing the same thing, even taking it so far as to pronounce out "omg", "rofl", and "lmao". I picked it up from a group of high school friends, and he picked it up from me. XD

mainly, I only use them sarcastically though, but since I'm a very sarcastic person by nature, I do tend to overuse them. XD

Legobricks October 29th, 2010 10:38 AM

Language evolves, and this is the path ours is taking; I don't think it's laziness nearly so much as change. It may well become standard in casual conversation for many persons born after 2000, still growing up nowadays. I'd rather hear the terms spoken like words instead of acronyms, though; but given what RADAR and LASER became, they probably will in due time.

Hiche.. October 29th, 2010 10:39 AM

I don't really mind them, to be honest. I use them a lot, during online chatting that is.

Alice October 29th, 2010 11:11 AM

I actually say lawl, rather than l-o-l.

Does that make me more, or less lazy?

Not at all, it just makes more sense.

otakulily October 29th, 2010 12:18 PM

Ahem, I believe they are pronounced "lawl" and "awmg".

And rarely do I use "lol" to indicate laughter. In fact, I rarely lol because something is funny. I keep a straight face whenever I lol. lol. Whenever I do laugh at something, I just type "Haha," or occasionally step it up a notch and go for a "rofl", "lmao", "omglolwtfxDDDDddddD", or something like that.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=lol

Definition 3 sums it up better.

And I do lawl sometimes in real conversations, (again) not because something is funny but because I have no other response.

I do that to, albeit veeeery infrequently. In general it quite annoys me when people say "Oh Em Gee" or "Be Are Be" etc when it actually takes exactly the same number of syllables to say "Oh my god" or "Be right back".

Although when I'm being sarcastic I am partial to saying "(z)omg" as a word

Rogue planet October 29th, 2010 2:26 PM

Everytime I hear someone say "lol" they're using it to be sarcastic, or mocking the use of the term. If someone finds something genuinely funny, laughter comes naturally without any thought behind it. If someone is saying "lol" instead of laughing then they're joking. If they actually found it funny then they'd just laugh. I've never heard someone say "l.o.l." I always hear it said as if it's a word.

I think it can be funny sometimes, it certainly doesn't annoy me. I don't do it myself because I can come up with far better remarks than a simple "lol" when I want to mock someone.

In other words, Erik Destler is correct.

Haha, I say awmg too. lol

o0PinkSquid0o October 30th, 2010 3:07 AM

haha, I say LOL and CBF etc all the time, its mostly for the lulz and to sound sarcastic towards people. I kinda think its funny :) I guess so long as you don't say LOL all the time out loud and actually for real laugh too I don't see the harm in it

Amai October 30th, 2010 7:01 AM

I only use them online, although I randomly slip in real life. Also, I will go "OMG" in real life if I am making fun of someone for making a big deal of something that isn't a big deal at all, oh, and I will make it in a voice like Paris Hilton's just to add to the affect.

:3

Garouga! Bare Your Fangs! October 30th, 2010 8:00 AM

I don't use them in real life or online, although my actual version of saying oh-em-gee is to day "Oh. Mygod." in the preppiest voice possible.

That, and sometimes I say b-t-dub (btw, but even lazier) to annoy this chick in one of my classes.

Agent Clank October 30th, 2010 8:25 AM

I rarely use them on here, but when I do, I just say "lol" to indicate that is was funny, but I've been doing "haha" more than "lol".
I don't say any of the chatspeak words in real life, because I think thats pretty annoying.

Lumina October 30th, 2010 10:42 AM

I rarely use those terms online, if ever. But it makes me twitch and die a little inside when I hear them used in real life.

Captain Hobo. October 30th, 2010 11:13 AM

It is just shorting the real words. I have no problem with it.

Stellar October 30th, 2010 11:35 AM

"Mockery of the language?" That's being kind of needlessly dramatic over the whole thing, don't you think?

It may not seem like it, but it's all just a part of the evolution of our culture. We don't speak old English in the US anymore, but I'm sure when the first person decided to drop "ye" and "olde" from their vocabulary, there were quite a few purists who found it downright offensive to the English language. I think it's actually kind of amazing that we're seeing such a visible shift in the way we speak. It's like watching time happen... if that makes any sense.
