Skill Cap Challenge
I dont know about all of you, but Im a pretty big sports fan. In almost all proffesional sports they have salary caps for all the teams to keep one team from getting too talented. This is alot like that, but instead of salaries that are used, instead the cap will be the pokemons base stats that cannot go over a certain cap. Now we know just like pokemon, athletes also progress, and this is a big way some teams excel. So any pokemon that was already in your possession (on team, or in box) for the last gym battle and evolves in between 2 gym battles will keep its last forms base stats against the next gym, but you will be forced to take the next forms stats for the gym after. As for pokemon that you catch in between the two gyms, you take their stats entering into the battle.
So Here is an example: Spoiler:
Rules 1. No cheating, lets try and keep this as legitimate as possible. 2. Try to update pretty often so we know whats up 3. Obviously the most important - stay under your cap for each given gym/elite 4 4. HM slaves are on your team, so they still count against your cap 5. Trading is allowed, and is just like aqcuiring a new pokemon by catching it 6. Emulators are allowed 7. As put before all games are allowed 8. All pokemon on your team must be within 5 levels of eachother when challenging a gym (this is to keep people from turning this into just a solo, or duo, or trio challenge) 9. No Legendaries 10. Challenge ends at the Elite 4/Red Sign up format: User/Player Name : tharding6 Game: Fire Red Then maybe tell us when you plan to start - I will be starting mine as soon as the thread gets accepted Your Caps 1st Badge - 900 , Must have at least a 3 pokemon roster 2nd Badge - 1272, Must have at least a 4 pokemon roster 3rd Badge - 1680, Must have at least a 5 pokemon roster 4th Badge - 2124, From now on you must have a 6 pokemon roster 5th Badge - 2232 6th Badge - 2340 7th Badge - 2445 8th Badge - 2550, (This is also what you use for the Elite 4 and Kanto League in GSC, HG/SS) Elite 4 - 2640 - (or Red in GSC, HG/SS) base stats can be found here: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_base_stats Note: I just kinda came up with this in my head, so if you have suggestions that we could use to tweak it please let me know. Good Luck |
well if no ones gonna do this can i get some criticism as to why haha
|
My only criticism is that it seems a little complicated, especially if someone had no previous knowledge of what you're talking about. That said, this seems like fun, so I think I'll give it a go on Emerald (once I get the screen on my old DS fixed (darn you Nintendo for not making the DSi XL backwards compatible)).

Couple of variants you could use:
1) Cap individual Pokemon's base stats - so no Pokemon with BST of over, say, 450 2) Allow higher BST but cap power of moves usable - say, BST of over 500 allowed, but no moves of over 50 power Just a couple of thoughts... |
sammu.. i thought about doing option a).. but i figured it would take away from alot of variety within the challenge.. i figure, ya wanna have a 500 BST, youre gonna have to give up alot to get it

I like what you're getting at here, what with a self-imposed "skill" stat that limits what pokemon you can use, but the execution is just a little complicated. XD
I think it'll be a bit neater if your skill stat increased by a set amount for each badge you have. Let's start by assuming 500 as the "average" BST of a fully evolved pokemon. 500x6=3000, so 3000 will be our cap by the end of the game and dictates what we take to the E4. By going down in constant intervals from there, we'll yield: 0 badges (team you take to fight Brock) = 600 1 badge (team you take to fight Misty) = 900 2 badges (etc...) = 1200 3 badges = 1500 4 badges = 1800 5 badges = 2100 6 badges = 2400 7 badges = 2700 8 badges (team you take to E4) = 3000 Since most starters have a BST in the 300-350 range, this will make the early game difficult to choose your starter's sidekcik but it will ease up a little bit as you go on. :P Still, this will take some considerable foreknowledge of the pokemon you encounter and some serious management ability. :D |

I'm kinda labouring the point here but all I'm saying is that it's a bit easy to get around the rules and still have an almost unbeatable team. That's why I suggested capping the power of moves your Pokemon can learn, or maybe only allowing them to use HM moves. But like you say it'd take quite a lot of prior knowledge to set up a team (which I think is always fun) so the Challenge might only be appropriate for the hardcore Challengers out there. |
i consider 500 to be a good base stat so thats out.. and i meant to say no legendaries (its now edited) .. as for having hm slaves you can if you really want.. but you have to remember you have to have all pokemon on your take within 5 levels.. so if you really wanted you could have a caterpie with 190 base stat.. but have fun training it to level 50un
An update on my progress: Started with bulbasaur did all the starting stuff caught spearow caught weedle evolved weedle to kakuna Brock Battle: Bulbasaur lv 14 (318) Spearow lv 13 (262) Kakuna lv 9 (205) Total = 785 Spammed Vine Whip for the win -Evolved Kakuna to Beedrill -Currently in mt. moon |
It's pretty obvious that most R/S/E runners will use the starter and three Wurmple (total: 890) for the first gym. Since Wurmple can fully evolve at level 10 and still count for only 195 against the first gym, it is basically required in Hoenn runs.
|
If you evolve a pokemon the same badge you capture it the evolved forms stats count. You take the form that it was at in the last gym battle if you had it already. So you would have to wait until after the first gym to evolve them, and then that would come back to bite you later
