My heart will always belong to the first three anime features I saw as a kid. AKIRA, Fist of the North Star, and Vampire Hunter D. Out of those, Akira will always be my favorite because of the incredible art direction and animation. That movie defines cool for me.

No mention of Ghost in the Shell? Come on, people! That film is the very definition of a classic! And as was said by one or two other people: Akira, plus much of Ghibli's work, especially Grave of the Fireflies.

As far as series go . . . Ranma One Half, which I don't think I've seen mentioned, and that one that changes its name between languages. I think it's Invader Lum or something. Both classics of the comedy genre.

It's Urusei Yatsura and it is most definitely a classic anime comedy (I suppose you'd put it in the magical girlfriend category, but I think that would give the wrong impression). I think it's the best adaptation of any of Takahashi's work, better than Ranma and certainly better than Inuyasha. It's an older series from the early- and mid-eighties, but if that doesn't bother you it is a lot of fun, particularly the first large chunk of it since it was directed by Mamoru Oshii (who directed the Ghost in the Shell movie). If you just want to get your feet wet then the movies are not bad at all. The first move is pretty typical of the series. The second one, Beautiful Dreamer, is my favorite and undoubtedly the best of all the movies (though I'm not sure it would be as appealing if you weren't a little used to the series and characters). Both these movies were also done by Oshii.
