thanks, ill try to incorporate that. please keep in mind that this is my fist hack, also, i will be doing graphical enhancements during development. Im trying to make the game very engaging and fun to play (not noobish) so stay tuned untill the alpha 1 release! (story picks up shortly after alpha 1)

This is actually pretty decent for a first time hack. :3
care to elaborate on the "Darkness Pokémon"?

Zeffy November 22nd, 2010 5:58 AM

This looks good and all, but why the heck are there 9 starters. o.o
Anyways, the combined PC and mart doesn't really look good. And the map on the 11th screenshot is a bit bare. Good luck! (b'-')b

the darkness pokemon are twisted versions of their real forms (basically just editied versions of their shiny sprites) certain events use them by just calling an asm command, ill add this info to the thread next time i update it (alpha 1 coming in a few days!)

Care to describe your "Darkness" Pokemon?

And well... describe what's gonna happen more... ((Just my opinion...... TT^TT))

read my reply to chrunch for info on darkness pokemon, and the "more" is basically things like graphical improvements, new items, new sprites, and more new pokemon

The 9 starters are the 3 from each region of the first 3 generations. Also what are you're issues with the combined PC mart because I would be glad to fix them. Also, I will add some rocks or bushes on the 11th screen because I do agree that it is a bit barren. Thanks for the advice, I always welcome constructive criticism because I joined this website so I could get better at rom hacking.

Platinum Lucario November 22nd, 2010 8:44 AM

Hm... I do understand this is your first ROM Hack that you've made, however I do actually recommend that you should insert a different tileset, so that way... it won't look so much like Pokémon FireRed. :P

Over all, I'd say the name of this hack sounds pretty interesting, and it's nice to see that you've got a title screen inserted. But yeah... it really does need a different tileset, that way... it won't make the ROM Hack look very generic. ;)

Oh yeah, and also... hasn't there been a ROM Hack called Pokémon Neon before?

Anyways, good luck on your ROM Hack! (b'-')

I am planning on inserting a different tileset, but I need someone to help create the tileset. (I'm pretty bad at designing them) If I can't find someone to help, I'll probably insert some tiles from other DS Pokémon games. Also, if there is a hack game called Neon already, I haven't heard of it (I looked through the threads since I wanted an original name) but, oh well, everything else is going to be original. Thanks for the advice!

Looks ok so far. Maybe its just me but the story is a bit short and so nintendo like, you could try to improve this. Oh and.. the mixed pokecenter/market looks a bit.. weird. Anyway, I'll try the upcoming beta, keep it up dude.

haha, ya..... the story description doesnt do a very good job describing the full breath of what it will be like, the upcoming alpha 1 release will just be an introduction into the story as well (only 2 towns are complete at this point) also, what can i do to make the combined pc/mart look better? im open to suggestion :D

countryemo November 22nd, 2010 4:30 PM

6,8,11 (Screens) I dont really like
6-Straight
8-Not sure
11-Baren, and shold try something else..

This is a pretty good hack, and I wish you luck sinces its #1 :P

And the pc/mart. Try purple? Red+Blue=Purple :D
Also you can just a have a one door building (still purple) sign: I guess "pm"?
And you can still map both of them in one. Juist bc its too. dosent mean you have to do 2 doors o.o

Well I dont know, that mixed up building just looks so wrong for me. You could try to get a new building if you'd like to use center and mart in one house. Or try another colour like countryemo said, maybe purple or even yellow? Just be creative.

already done! im putting up new screenshots 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11. i hope i fixed everyones issues! (alpha 1 coming later today!)

Perriechu November 23rd, 2010 12:01 PM

The hack looks OK IMO. Although a few more screenshots showing various other features, such as the IV Pokemon in play would have been good :D

Anyway, I wish you good luck with this hack and I look very forward to playing it.

I will put up screens of the gen IV Pokemon once the become catchable in the release. At the moment, the wild Pokemon catchable haven't been changed, but that will be fixed once I find out what Pokemon people would like to have in the first routes. Enjoy Alpha 1!

chrunch November 23rd, 2010 11:39 PM

Well, I played the alpha and it was actually pretty good, but I've got a suggestion:
Instead of using shiny sprites for darkness pokemon, you should probably replace other sprites. It'll give you more freedom in editing darkness pokemon, you could add different moves, or stats, to make them harder. also, what would happen if you accidentally ran into a wild shiny pokemon? :/

I like your suggestion, the problem is that i have to replace a pokemon for each darkness pokemon, ill probably do that for the legendaries but i just dont want to replace too many pokemon; most likely, ill just replace some of the more worthless gen II and III pokemon and keep the good ones. This is also because im inserting around 30 gen IV pokemon and i dont want to run out of space. Also, if you accidentally run into a wild shiny (haha i wish) its explained by the fact that the world is being corrupted by darkness pokemon, i have an asm routine that i will have randomly execute on some routes to cause darkness battles (to go along with the storyline). if i can find a way to use the 25 free slots for the darkness pokemon while retaining their pokedex entries, i will

Thanks for the feedback!

I think teal looks loads better. Purple is far too bold compared to everything else--despite the impeccable logic provided by Tcoppy. :)

I like the overall appearance of the hack. It's just that in some of the screenshots, (precisely, the PokeCenter one) seems too blank.

Teal

Please respond by quoting this message!

I prefer Teal because it makes it a bit unique. I've seen purple roof tops before as well.

Teal it is then!

I'll also have trees next to it so it doesnt look so bare!

Thanks for all your opinions!

To my point of view, the hack looks good so far. You'll keep improving while the hack progresses. Good luck! And, I agree with others, Teal looks good. :>

Its update time!

Update

Updating powers... ACTIVATE!
  • Mapping revisions are currently being made to the Mountain Trail to make it look a little bit more natural. I have been working on my mapping skills and things are looking pretty good.
  • My friend is working on making new male hero OW sprites. These additions will eventually be reflected in the main trainer sprite, but not at this point.
  • The next release will include a new route, a new forest (it will be ALOT better than Viridian Forest), and a new city (it will have the first gym)
  • So far, half of the new route and the new forest have been mapped, and the city has no work done on it.
  • As you can tell from all the additions coming in Alpha 2, It is a little ways off. However, with Christmas break approaching, I will have alot of free time to work on the game. You can expect Alpha 2 in late December, to early January! There are no guarantees, but this is what it looks like it will be.
Updating powers... DEACTIVATE!

LightOfAFox December 17th, 2010 2:21 PM

cool hopefully i will be able to finish this alpha as fast as the first one!
Also, good luck on the hack dude i love it!

Skitty123 December 22nd, 2010 5:08 AM

Hmm can i post the darkness sprites here instead of in a pm?
And it won't let me play what emulator do you use?

LightOfAFox December 22nd, 2010 10:42 AM

try visual boy with the most recent version
it should work

Please don't post the darkness sprites here, use PM. Just upload them to Imageshack, NOT Photobucket (Photobucket is blocked on my internet for some weird reason). Also, just give me the link, don't use the [IMG] message code, that way I can download them in their full quality!

I use VBA-M. It supports pretty much every game. Make sure the save type is set to Flash 128k so you don't get the 1-m sub circuit-board error.

2RandomStudios December 28th, 2010 11:28 PM

UPDATE
  • Some HUGE story developments have been made to the hack!
  • There will no longer be league gyms, something completely different will replace them!
  • While there won't be league gyms, there will be gyms. These will be places where you can train your pokemon with trainers that always have the urge to battle! (once you finish the gym, the trainers will still battle you!)
  • I am currently scripting a new location for alpha 2, the Berry Woods. All I have left for scripting there is all the trainers.
  • Mapping revisions have been finished for the Mountain Trail. It now looks much more natural and appealing to the eye.
  • Cliff Town is now called Carob Town. This is because after I made cliff town, I decided to name all the cities after spices.
  • The next city is called Barberry City and will have many exciting events in it. (due to this, the release of alpha 2 will be delayed)
  • I am currently working on helping script another hack and this is taking up some of my time to work on Neon Version so that is yet another thing that is causing the release delay.
  • Even though there are some delays, don't think in any way that I will be quitting this hack. I am fully committed to finishing this hack and I am working to finish alpha 2 ASAP.

Well after all those updates, I hope you are looking forward to alpha 2!

2RandomStudios January 12th, 2011 7:06 AM

Well guys, alpha 2 is around the corner. It will end after the Berry Woods (north from Paprika City), but berry woods won't be the only addition. I have been spending some time revamping most of the mapping from alpha 1 because I had improved my mapping skills since then. I have also inserted a new hero sprite, and new hero OW's (they are just re-colors, but they still look nice). The main delay however, has been due to some annoying debugging, and a heck of a lot of brainstorming to make the story as interesting as possible. Thanks everyone for you patience, and see you at Alpha 2!

Glad to see you back! The hack hasn't been moving along quite as much as I have wished though. I haven't been able to work on the hack for the past 2 weeks because I have had finals, and I was getting a new computer, I'm also switching schools, so you can probably understand why I say that progress has been slow. However, I hope to make some major progress on it in the next few days, so I will be sending you a pre-release for you to test!

Rayce January 28th, 2011 8:27 AM

I'm just wondering how far the game is so far and how soon the next update is (approximate date). I just don't want to play a game through the first town just to get to the end and have the next update come out when I do

Well guys sorry for a lack of updates recently, the hack has gone on a short hiatus until I can get more time to work on it. Don't worry though because I'm definitely not quiting on it!

Satoshi Ookami February 20th, 2011 1:24 AM

This hack has very interesting screens it caught my attention =D
As since Jirachi is in titlescreen does it mean that Jirachi is going to be main legendary?

xx_mcawesome_xx February 20th, 2011 12:35 PM

is electivire and magmortar in this game?? that would be epic!!

2RandomStudios February 20th, 2011 11:30 PM

Yes, Jirachi is the main legendary, and magmortar and electrive might be in it. If you quote my last post though,

You'll see that this hack is on hiatus until i can find more time to work on it. So stay tuned!

2RandomStudios March 19th, 2011 10:41 PM

Well guys, I'm finally picking the hack up again! It's been a while but I finally have some more time to spend on it so I hope to be releasing some updates soon!

Okay, interesting idea. You could probably develop it a little, with a bit of backstory, explain what Kanto is like now, hint at what Team Aurora's aims may be (some effects they are having on the region). It's probably not the best idea to start a sentence with "but," but I digress. Oh, and it's spelled "preceeding." :D

Quote:

  • New maps - I'm sorry, but this is to be expected in a new hack - it's hardly a feature.
  • New story - See above.
  • All custom scripts - See above.
  • Several Generation IV Pokémon - I guess that's cool, though isn't this Kanto?
  • Choose a starter from any of the first 3 generations - Okay, I'm not a fan of such a huge choice of starters. I think it's better to make only three available at the start, and then make others available throughout the hack.
  • Darkness Pokémon - Kay...not sure where you're going with this. Is this like the darkness Pokémon of Colosseum, or what?
  • Chuggaaconroy is a trainer, featuring his entire Fire Red team! (if you don't know who this is, then look him up on youtube, best lets player and Fire Red walkthrough ever) - Okay, that's a...nice, idea. Though I probably wouldn't call him Chuggaconroy, maybe something like Roy, and then have an NPC near him saying that "he's a great trainer!" or something. Idk.
  • More coming soon! - Okay, this doesn't really get people interested - it says that you've got no more ideas/came up with these features on the spot. Just say "and many more," or nothing at all :D.

Crit in italics.

Okay, first question: Which titlescreen is the right one? I'm guessing the first is the one you want to insert, as that Pokémon logo looks like it's raising the palette way over 256, and the second is the one you have inserted. Anyway, that text's gradient doesn't help at all, is hard to read (especially that text in the bottom-left corner of the first screen (I actually can't read it)). It's also been resized improperly in the first screen which looks really tacky - as does the Jirachi, which not only looks bad stretched, but has large white spaces which should be transparent. As for the second screen, well, it's essentially a recolour of the FR titlescreen with some tacky text and a Jirachi sprite thrown in there. I'd probably get a spriter to sprite a larger version of Jirachi for your titlescreen.

Isn't it "Punch-Out!!!"? Anyway, average screens. It doesn't really tell me much about the hack though, does it? Except the fact that the carpet in the second screen is just empty. I doubted it was possible to have too much empty space in a house map, but you've managed to. Bring back that table!
Okay, there're two tile errors at the mountain part going to the right - it's missing two "tops". I'm not really a fan of making the player walk on that mountain tile, or walk down a one-tile-wide path, so this screen doesn't really help I'm afraid. Try to always give the player at the very least two tiles to walk, though generally spaces should be about four tiles wide.
Like I've said, I'd rather have only three choices, and then have all the others available throughout the hack through other means of getting them (sidequests, game corner, trades, etc.).
Okay, it seems a bit odd receiving your Pokédex in a cave, but I'm not sure how you want your hack to go so I guess it's near the beginning of the game anyway. The maps not too great though, there are one-tile-wide paths again and it could do with a bit more detail (craters, sand, water, different rocks, rock smash/strentgh boulders (they don't always need a purpose), etc.).
Text colour would be nice - it's a male talking, so make it blue coloured text.
The entrance doesn't seem to connect to the cave properly though that could be fixed with three simple block edits, though you probably should have noticed that before screenshotting it.
The turquoise palette could be mellowed a little.
This looks more like a Pokécenter to me. You should probably stick with the Mart's tiles and add in the staircase. Also, I don't really think I'd be a happy clerk having to be squashed in like that. Give it more space (though, again, this would look better in the Mart's tiles) and put only one of those statues - and move it out of the way.
I don't know if this is the first dialogue that the characters say, but if not it'd probably nice to put something like "GRUNT: I didn't realize we had visitors!" (yeah, that "that" isn't really needed). The map looks pretty mundane and is symmetrical, which is a big no-no when mapping. Try and make it a bit more curvy etc., and more like an island. Even Game Freak maps aren't this square.
cool story bro.

Anyway, good luck with this hack.

BouncedMr Happy March 20th, 2011 6:07 PM

This looks like a great hack, I will play it just for Chuggaaconroy, but you should incorporate SSoHPKC as a trainer with his team (TrollDrill included!).

I guess I have alot of work to do then! Thanks for the suggestions, but just remember that this is my first hack and it's done in what little free time I have. I will look for someone to create and insert a title screen but it would be nice if you had some suggestions as to who could do that.

...Sorry, SphericalIce, but it's actually not spelled preceeding. The spelling he used, preceding, is correct. The word you were thinking of is proceeding, which is not appropriate here. This would be why the forum applies the little red squiggly spell check line thing to the word 'preceeding' and not to 'preceding'.

If you're going to go to the effort of attempting to point out grammar and spelling errors in someone else's work, please make sure what you are pointing out is actually incorrect, okay? ;)

Well, it sounds nice, but I don't get the point of telling us when you update if you don't put up any screenshots of it. Even a bitmap of the OW sprites your inserting would be nice. As for the images you do have up, I can't really tell much besides where you get stuff like running shoes. Also Ace Trainer grunts for some reason.

That's not a valid excuse, mate. I know you've accepted my crit anyway, but please, please, PLEASE, don't use that as an excuse.

I'm not the greatest at making titlescreens, however in my opinion, I think sticking to pretty much the basics of FireRed's titlescreen (ie the position of the Press Start, the top and bottom bars (not the really thick black ones), the location of the Pokémon: FireRed Version text, etc.) looks best, and more professional. But whatever, do what you like. :D

Okay, I suppose that was kind of stupid of me, however it isn't the forum that provides the spell check, it's certain plugins for certain browsers, and I haven't one. So...I guess that's kind of a "right back at you thing." Anyway, thanks for pointing that out to me. :D

and it's Spherical Ice >:

XD. Nicely played, sir. Nicely played.

I'm not trying to use it as an excuse, I want to make sure that the hack is judged from the standpoint that I am new to hacking, not that I'm a veteran. Anyways, thanks for the suggestions.

This is Kanto in the past; much is different. This lets me have some liberty with what I do.

Okay, I will give you some thoughts about the hack.

The story is good but it's pretty short for hack, so if you make it more long it will be more interesting to play.

And the text on the titlescreen is bad and not going well but the rest of the screenshot is good like the background just wanna say about the colors of the text.
About the feature, it's so good but it looks pretty overused by other hackers, I always seen that on other hacks, so I think add more feature that the other hack doesn't have.

I see I need to update the tread then. Understand that my goal here isn't to have more features than everyone else, but to have a prominent story and quality gameplay. (It doesn't say alpha 1 for nothing!) The story has evolved much since I wrote this months ago so its probably not the best example I could have. It is possible that I will start this hack over on a new rom and just import most of my maps and scripts that are good. Other than that most of them will be redone, the right way.

Thanks

Well guys this hack is pretty much dead. Because of this, I will be giving out all the project files and such to someone who wants to continue the project for me. Please PM me to request this.

Thank you

Well then, no sense in keeping this open.
