New Build

Okay, so I was thinking about building a new rig containing the following:

Case:
Cooler Master CM690 II

MB:
MSI 870A-G54

CPU:
AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition

GPU:
ASUS Radeon HD 6850/6870

HDD:
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 500GB 7200 RPM

RAM:
CORSAIR 4GB DDR3 1333

Optical:
LG 22x CD/DVD Burner

PSU:
SeaSonic S12II 620W

Does this look good? I put it together on newegg for $722.92 (I might be able to lower the price if I can find any combos). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Everything checks out nicely. If you want to play every game on the market, you'd need a better card. If you're not looking to make a gaming computer, then you'll be fine. It wouldn't hurt to get a 750W PSU, though. And you might want to take a look at the Caviar Black HDD if you haven't already. And what OS are you going with? If you're gonna use 7, then 8GB wouldn't hurt.

The heatsink on the Phenom isn't very good, from what I've been told.

[I'm still working on building, so you might want to wait until a more experienced member comments]

Really good choices. I personally find MSI to be poor quality with horrible BIOSs, so consider Asus or Gigabyte instead. If you want to go crossfire at a later date, I would suggest an 880 chipset board and the 750W PSU that Purple suggested, otherwise the current chipset (go with another brand) and PSU are great.

Two considerations. 1TB Drives really aren't much more than 500GBs, plus they usually have bigger caches and are newer (therefore faster). Also, the graphics card really depends on your monitor(s) and what you are playing.

The rest is sweet, but as Purple said, get a cooler for the CPU.

Not a bad build. I agree with others that going with a bigger HDD and more RAM would be better suited for a gaming system (as I'm assuming that this is what you're doing). I'll attach a pdf that I printed from NewEgg with my recommended build. Just let me know what you think, and enjoy! :D

I'm not terribly keen on that build. The board is really old and budget, the graphics card is slower than what he's looking at and the thermal paste is totally unnecessary, because Cooler Master ships decent thermal paste.

The Samsung F3 drives are also a lot quieter than the WD Caviar Blacks. Just go with the 1TB Spinpoint F3. I mean, the performance is slightly better with the Caviar Blacks, but if noise/price are an issue...

That's the only reason I did that build, not sure if he is on a budget. If not, then here's my other suggestion (attached). I also own two 750GB WD CB's, and I've never noticed either making any noise (and I've had them for almost two years, now). I still recommend them.

It's the platter noise. They give off quite the whir. It bothers me, that's for sure. The high-end WDs are reliable, just loud and expensive. It's a well-known fact. Don't even bother with the Greens on the other hand. High fail rates, poor performance and moody as hell in arrays.

lol, way to take that from one extreme to another. It's all about bang-for-buck. That board is probably overkill, as is the Graphics card.

lol, the CM V10. I'm sorry, but it's a gimmick. If you want the best air cooling has to offer, the Noctua NH-D14 (I think) and the Thermalright Silver Arrow are the best. A little huge, though, but the V10 has a similar issue.

Yeah, I'd probably still recommend the other heatsink cooler. I've actually had great luck with the Gemini. I've found that idling, my processor sits a little below 30*C (usually ~28*). I've got a GTX295 in my system now, but looking to possibly going to the GTX580 this spring.

Nah, it's getting pretty old. You're better off with a newer cooler, considering how good they've been getting over the last year or so. Even the CM Hyper 212+ will kick it to the curb, whilst being really cheap. I'm talking 5°C better with only one fan. The Cooler Master V6 is also good, but don't bother with the disappointing V8.

What CPU are you getting those temps on? If it was an i7, I would be impressed. If it was a Phenom, it's nothing special. Need to take ambient into account, too.

If you're up for the price, the 580 is looking like an awesome card, yeah. Lets see what the 6970 brings. :D
