한국어 (Korean) Thread!

Hey all, I was just wondering how many of you are studying Korean, or at least interested in the language. I'm studying it right now, and have been since March after on and off study since summer '09. But there is a lot more to learn, and I've been lazy for a few months with it.

So, please tell me your opinions on Korean, and if you're studying it join in too!

Korean is one of the hardest languages in the world alongside Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Eastern/North Eastern European languages like Finnish.

Other than that, it's a very interesting language, but I can't voice an opinion on anything else since I've only met 2 Koreans (South) in person and never been to Korea (North or South).

I was born in South Korea but was adopted by an American family before I was a year old. Needless to say, I know nothing of the language or the culture, and for some reason I never had the urge to find out more.

I might be interested in finding out how much the Korean language and culture differs from Japan, as I have a renewed interest in the latter.

I have a lot of Korean friends that really love their own culture. It's really nice to see it, too. Sometimes I say "hey" to them in Korean, just to be friendly.. but I don't know any of the characters or how to spell it in English characters, either. I don't really know any other words.. but I think it'd be a really fun language to learn.

I'd love to visit Seoul someday.

Edit: Oh yeah.. sometimes I'mjust good at reading body language.. so sometimes when my Korean friends say something, I'll pique in and say something like "Yeah I love the ham sandwiches at the cafeteria, too" and they'll look at me like "._." and say "How did you know what I was saying?" and we'll all have a laugh.

Ahh, I don't let that notion get to me. Korean is sort of hard when you first start, but after that it gets easier (well for me). I'm studying Arabic too (العربية لغة جميلة!) and yeah it's difficult but again it's all about the mindset. ;)

I have a lot of Koreans in my city. One of my best friends is half-Korean, and I have other Korean friends too so I have a lot of people to practice with.

I think there are some similarties between Korean and Japanese. With their obviously being a difference too.

If you ever get over to Japan South korea is no more thanan hour/hour and a half away by plane. :D

One of my korean friends doesn't even care about Korean. I tried to get hm into it, even offered to let him borrow the books that I buy to study Korean, but he didn't want to learn it!
sounds like you have good times with your korean friends...

I'm guessing most people are more interested in Japanese. Hey when you're done learning it come join us Korean learners. Both languages have SOV word order!

I don't see this going anywhere.

Anyway, I have a friend who's "Korean American" (If that's a word), who has been trying to actually learn Korean- and says it's really hard. If someone with a Korean background can't learn it, I'm not trying.

I'm fascinated by Korean culture (specifically North) and I would love to visit Pyongyang some day. Maybe it's the country's seclusion that made it peak my interest.

Fortunate they finally allow people with US passports to visit, but they must personally approve you first before allowing you entry, once you're in there, you can't go anywhere outside your hotel room unless your own tour guide allows you to, and the guide's responsible for taking you somewhere, you can't go on your own.

Basically, if you're not adaptable to new environments or if you're not mature enough to follow directions (unlike some kid who got lashed in Singapore), then enjoy! I wanted to visit the North and the South for some reason.
